🚨 A heads-up for anyone running #WordPress, #Moodle, #Nextcloud or other PHP-based services.
PHP has confirmed two critical vulnerabilities, both rated 9.2/10. Fixes are scheduled for today, 21 October, at 14:00 UTC.
Prepare to patch PHP, not just your applications. CERT-EU advises considering temporary isolation of public-facing services if prompt patching isn't possible.
It sounds pretty bad. Affected versions are not yet confirmed but I've heard 5.4+

Just been to see The National Emergency Briefing. What a waste of time that was.
I literally already knew everything mentioned in the 50 minute film, and none of it talked about the systemic levers we need to pull to do something about it.
Awareness and 'the facts' isn't enough. Calling for a "primetime emergency briefing" on TV when most people don't watch it is nonsensical.
I left partway through the discussion afterwards as it was just retired people talking about sad little things to make them feel better about themselves and the world.
No-one cares about your award-winning permaculture garden, mate, when water companies are spewing sewage into our rivers.
I couldn't care about your church's bronze, silver, and gold awards for sustainability. What difference does it make?
What a frustrating and depressing experience. And these were the people who are interested in this stuff. We're absolutely fucked.

Emily Segal has coined "tasteslop" for AI-generated work that looks tasteful but is extracted from the social relations that give taste meaning.
I think the same logic runs through education. Literacy-slop is the credential without the community of practice, the qualification without the learning. It satisfies the classifier and nothing else.

@nprofile…x9tq Oh I think teachers are great. I used to be one, as was my dad and my wife (and most of her family). I'm coming at this from a "let's not blame schools for the ills of society" angle 👍

2026-04-03 07:24:52 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…x9tq Indeed, the research shows this because schools are the source of the data.
Schools can play a role, but (as ever) *investing* in poorer areas helps massively.
It's a classic compounding feedback loop. If I'm a young person from an area with no jobs and people out of work, then I've no-one to ask for advice. Why wouldn't I want to just live at home and hang out with my mates?
The problem with schools as the locus of 'advice' for young people is that most teachers don't have much experience of the world outside of formal education.
Anyway, rant over 😉

Every so often, Cory Doctorow explains the way he works and I greedily gobble up the words as either proof that I'm on the right track, or as evidence that I need to rethink my approach.
This time, thankfully, there's more of the former and less of the latter:
"The AI bubble sucks. AI itself is a normal technology:
[...]
It's not "unethical" to scrape the web in order to create and analyze data-sets. That's just "a search engine"
[...]
There's plenty of useful things people can do with AI. There's plenty of useful things people *will* do with AI. AI is bad because it's an economic bubble and a grift, but not because we've created a bunch of utilities that would – under normal circumstances – be called "plug-ins"."

“I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies:
1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
2. Anything that's invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.
3. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things.”

Socrates didn't like things being written down because they were then difficult to refute.
In completely unrelated thinking, I wish journal articles had a comments section.

It's @nprofile…l595's online Christmas party in a few minutes time.
So before breaking out the mince pies and beverages, I've just hit sent on the final draft of a #microcredentials report that I collaborated on with @nprofile…jn7s
Massive shout out to @nprofile…2w88 whose images we used to bring it to life. Huge thanks to him also for producing a sausage-related image for the conclusion at short notice 🤘

"When you invent the ship, you also invent the shipwreck; when you invent the plane, you also invent the plane crash; and when you invent electricity, you invent electrocution. Every technology carries its own negativity, which is invented at the same time as technical progress."

I've been a Spotify Premium subscriber since I sold 99% of my CD collection in 2009. The algorithms they've developed have helped me find music I perhaps wouldn't otherwise have discovered.
They can fuck *right* off, though, if they're going to start promoting Sabrina Carpenter under the guise of 'Smart Shuffle' in my Hardcore Rap Gym playlist.

@npub1ahr…m294 I think we're talking past each other. I'm talking about people thinking it's possible to 'solve' politics itself merely through referendums.

@npub1ahr…m294 Market economies is literally the opposite of a strategic approach to government, though?

How clueless must you be to think that you can 'solve' politics by implementing a series of digital referendums?
Blows my mind 🤯

@npub198t…hasj We're now at Lancaster Uni, staying in the student-style guest rooms ready for the open day here tomorrow. It's also lovely!

Had a glorious day with my son at Loughborough University's open day.
Not only is the campus pretty great, but the VC gave the welcome talk, the Geography department seems high quality and friendly, and the sporting options are top-notch.
