TIL that cabbage is the new “it” vegetable. Very excited to be way ahead of the trend for once! (My ancestral cuisine is basically: “your ingredients are potato, cabbage, sour cream and pork and you must use at least three of those in each dish.”)

So, turns out the seminal psychological treatise “When Prophecy Fails” was a lie. When prophecy failed, the cult members did not double down, and the cult quickly collapsed. Which means decades of sociological thinking are built on a falsehood.

@nprofile…mmvs This was a huge point of controversy just recently in Massachusetts. The state passed a law requiring evidence based techniques be used to teach kids to read. The teachers union fought tooth and nail to allow three-cueing.

If the White House says the masked people were not in fact ICE, then the follow-up question is: “Are you investigating the number of times imposters dressed as ICE have abducted American citizens?” Get that stuff on the record.

Remember, you do not have to go to the biggest protest in the biggest city in your region. Smaller local protests:
1. Allow you to meet your nearby neighbors
2. Are less likely to become flashpoints
3. Are a really GREAT way to hearten other people, because if protests are going on in places other than the big city it means a LOT of people care
(In not-unrelated news, my friend’s elderly, formerly-Republican parents went to a protest in their extremely right-wing small town this week and were chuffed to find hundreds of people joining them!)

This article made me angry for days when I was copyediting it. But I couldn’t talk about it because it hadn’t been published yet. Now I can. And it’s open-access so you can all read it.
Global health institutions allowed COVID-19 vaccinations to be locked up by patents. Moderna showed they could transfer their manufacturing methodologies to factories in places like South Africa. But those factories were forced to send doses to Europe and North America, while most Africans did not get COVID vaccinations.
There is a different model of medication manufacturing and distribution that is used with AUDS retrovirals for equitable distribution. It could have been used for COVID vaccines. But it wasn’t.And the same thing is now happening with Mpox.

I know that comfort foods are supposed to be what you ate as a kid, but I sometimes wonder if there is something genetic about the foods one finds comforting. Give me something with cabbage and dairy (preferably sour cream) and I will instantly find it comforting. But my mom hated both cabbage and sour cream, so I never had that as a kid. (It definitely doesn’t explain why I find shahi paneer or hand-pulled Xi’an noodles comforting, which are things I didn’t have until I was a grownup.) #food

Archiving Gmail - help?
I want to download all of my email from the beginning of my account until 2023 and then wipe it off the Gmail servers. I am not sure how to do this, because every solution I have found so far will synchronize my storage solution to my Gmail acocunt.
With Thunderbird I can go POP to delete all new incoming messages, but that is kind of the opposite of what I am looking for.
Ideas?

OMG. Scratch literally any problem in the US, and you'll find a monopoly underneath. Why were the LA fires so hard to fight? In part because a monopoly has bought the entire fire truck manufacturing industry, doubled the prices of trucks and quadrupled the waiting time for them. 100 of the 180-ish trucks LAFD owns are currently offline. #LAFires

2025-01-13 15:11:11 UTC

History repeats. Centuries ago, we had this thing called "the commons" that was land everyone was allowed to use. Many people think "oh, that's where they grazed cows," but it was much more than that.
For example, Boston Common (stolen from Native Americans, but that's another discussion) was the place rug cleaners went to beat out rugs. It was the place vendors set up market stalls. There was a rope walk at the end of the Common where people made rope (a dirty, nasty job). It supported a lot more than just cattle grazing.
Over time, the use of the commons were restricted. In some places you had to pay a fee to use them (unless you were the elite); in other places, a wealthy person was designated as the owner of the land, and your work went for his benefit. You might get some subsistence-level living out of it, but the point of your work was to enrich the land owner.
Anyway, that sure feels like where the Internet is headed. I am sure someone has written about this at greater length, and much more articulately, than I have.
