Finally watched They Live (1988, dir. John Carpenter) tonight.
00:00 to 30:00 - what a screenplay. How did this get *more* relevant over the last four decades
30:00 to 190:00 - this fight scene is sure...long
190:00 to 200:00 - imagine if they had spent that time developing the characters instead of making them fight each other past any conceivable limit of human endurance
Anyway, pretty good movie

A “small cap stock” is when the CEO wears a little tiny hat. A “large cap stock” is when the CEO is Pharrell. For simplicity, you can invest in an “index fun,” where people point their index fingers at the CEO’s hat and laugh.

Any musicians here that can tell me the time signature of “Wuppertal” by Grandbrothers? Every time I think I’ve got it pinned I listen to it again and think, no, that doesn’t even fit a single bar of the song. Maybe it changes a lot? Maybe it doesn’t have a time signature?

“It’s here to stay” so are steam engines and vinyl records, but we don’t drain the world dry to build them.
“It’s inevitable” so is nuclear war, but we do everything possible to delay it.
“It’s undeniably useful” so is child labor. All exploitation is useful, but that’s not a reason to accept it.
“It’s the future” so were crypto and NFTs, back when investors could be tricked into buying them. Corporate foretelling is always and only a marketing strategy.

if you feel a sense of personal responsibility for the state of the world and tend to blame yourself when bad things happen and continue happening as though you were the gatekeeper of the universe and if you had tried a little harder and yelled a little louder everyone would have come to their senses but since that didn't happen you must have failed and the moral defeat is like a crushing weight all the time,, put your hands in the air

Last week I stayed somewhere that had a Fire TV and my favorite thing about it was when you used the remote to change the volume, it took several seconds (not exaggerating) for the TV to respond, and sometimes it didn’t respond at all, and if you pressed the button again it might decide to respond to both. So it was like a fun lottery to see whether and how much the volume would change, eventually.
Congrats to #Amazon for screwing up the one thing every TV has reliably done for decades

Some games have emotes: stylistic actions or flourishes you can make your character do, like a salute or a jumping jack. Helldivers II has *interactive* emotes, which other players can participate in if they choose. One of these is the “hug” emote, which you have to save up your in-game credits to buy, but then allows you to offer hugs to strangers in a sci-fi universe.
I am at 5+ hugs and counting.
I think the game has guns and stuff too, idk

Someone I love had a first-time seizure recently. I was the only one around. Here are two things I wish I had known:
1. There’s nothing inherently harmful, to the brain or body, about a seizure. (Direct quote from the neurologist.)
2. If someone is having a seizure, the main thing they need is to be laid *on their side* in a safe place.
CDC has more info: https://www.cdc.gov/epilepsy/first-aid-for-seizures/index.html. But if you only remember these two things, you’ll be more prepared than I was.

It’s a toaster? How hard can it be? It needs to apply heat to bread for 1-10 minutes
I should be able to buy a user-repairable toaster that will last me 10+ years for less than $50.
Instead, all toasters are disposable, priced by style and appearance, and (according to reviews) consistently fail to do their one job. OR they cost $200.

Sometimes the gatekeeping is unnecessary; sometimes the respect isn't given when it should be. I'm not saying the system is perfect.
What I'm saying is: when I was 15, I would have loved to have a machine that took my desperately uninformed ideas and spray-painted them with the right vocabulary and structure to make them seem credible. I was constantly frustrated that no one took me seriously.
Such a machine would only have harmed me.
I see a lot of 15-year-old me in the world today.

2026-08-19 16:19:10 UTC

One way to see the norms of a given community—the vocabulary, social behaviors, and body of knowledge participants expect of each other—is as unnecessary gatekeeping. Why not just consider every idea on its merits?
Another way to see it is as proof of professional respect. If you haven't bothered to learn about them, why should they listen to you? That specialized vocabulary shows you've put in some effort; you're not just dropping sophomoric ideas and expecting praise.

Or here it is in a toot:
- Put a couple cloves of minced garlic in a pat of butter (or sub olive oil) over low heat.
- Add some salt, pepper, thyme, and red pepper flakes. Don't let the garlic brown.
- Add a cup of low-sodium chicken broth, some chicken bouillon, and a small handful of diced sun-dried tomatoes. Simmer for a few minutes.
- Add a few glugs of cream and a handful of shredded parmesan. Heat and stir till smooth.
- Serve over rice.

THESIS: The core of good software engineering is learning to operate in a way that limits the impact of mistakes, since mistakes are inevitable.
ANTITHESIS: Guardrails are expensive. You can't prevent all possible mistakes, and trying to do so will frustrate everyone.
SYNTHESIS: Most people are imperfect, not hostile. You can build in a margin of error while also treating your peers as intelligent beings making non-random decisions.

One thing I struggled with during the "public apology letter" era was the sense that there was nothing a celebrity could say that would be accepted by the masses. The apology was never sufficient; it just became further evidence of wrongdoing.
Then I realized I was looking at it backwards. People who face accountability, and their PR/legal teams, are always looking for some magic combination of words that will make the accountability go away.
That combination of words shouldn't exist.

If you don’t know, it’s a great time to learn.
The world is hellbent on shoving unimportant things in front of you and then immediately proving how empty they are. It’s never been so blatant as it is now. You can get a lifetime’s worth of things that don’t matter in a weekend. You can listen for one or two things that do.

I love open-captioned movies but the ones I go to are always half-empty, so for anyone who doesn't know:
CLOSE CAPTIONED means you need to request a special device to see the movie captions. It might attach to your seat. They won't be on the screen.
OPEN CAPTIONED means the captions are on the screen, like when you toggle them on your TV.
Lots of theaters do open captions but only for certain showings. If we all buy tickets to those showings, they'll do more of them.

I told the kids “no candy tonight, you had ice cream at grandma’s” and my first grader said “ok fine I’m going to my room for no reason.” But I’m starting to think, shoot. Maybe she did have a reason

The most frustrating part of consuming a third-party API or library is when they're like "there is no DriveOffRoad method because everyone should stay on the road at all times" and you're like "I understand but the road I need to drive on doesn't connect to this one, please, they pass within 3 inches of each other, just let me cross the gap" and they're like "don't bring the real world into this, driving off road should never be required"

This, by @nprofile…j27p, is hard to swallow but nails something I've been grappling with my whole career:
> Being good at running the business is not optional. The most effective leaders are the ones who are kind, caring humans and skilled business operators. The second most effective leaders are the ones who are crappy humans but skilled business operators. After that comes everyone else.

Someone on Tumblr said when you see a stranger, you should imagine how they’d look to you if you’d been in love with them for 10 or 15 years, and let me tell you, that has altered my brain permanently. The world is a different place.

I grant that 12:00 as a default value is usually midnight, not noon, but the pun is too good to pass up

2026-07-06 19:30:57 UTC

Anoonymous: when a timestamp reads 12:00, not because that's when the event occurred, but because it's a zero value or default and the actual time is unknown.
