In general, so-called property claims give “owners” anti-democratic veto power over public, shared resources, like roads, air, water, security, and more. These sorts of claims can (and do) serve important instrumental purposes in the public interest, but they cannot be assumed as natural entitlements. We should reconsider how a handful of individuals with property can overturn the Democratic will of an entire city.

Does this mean the GOP is becoming the party of the working class and the Democrats the party of the elite? Yes and no. Yes, as far as cultural identification goes, the GOP is sweeping the “working class”. But that may include used car dealers and local real estate moguls who identify with that class despite being well out of its socioeconomic range. Meanwhile urban working class voters who heavily lean Dem basically get no coverage, and urban Dem elites continue falling down the class ladder

2023-08-14 15:33:29 UTC

- reply

My theory is that Trump/GOP attracts a handful of voters in rural, working class communities driven by socio-cultural issues, but lots more people, mostly men, in outer suburbs making well above median income who identify as “working class” culturally. Meanwhile Biden/Democrats mop up the rest: urban working class, some rural working class communities, lots of middle class suburbanites and an overwhelming number of urban elites.

Oh, on a related note, I do think a lot of nominal liberals are emotionally invested in punching left. But I think that’s counterproductive intellectually. A lot of the most vibrant, challenging, and interesting ideas about the social technologies of human thriving are coming from the left, and any intellectual with integrity should hesitate to disregard the recent fruits of the left-intellectual tradition, even if one disagrees with it

What I think my version of engaging with conservatives looks like is actually deepening our conversation with liberal conservatives who identify with the center and center-left, because it’s important for us to strategically know how these thinkers circumscribe the boundaries around pragmatic pro-democracy/anti-domination change under a conservative heuristic.

2023-08-14 15:20:47 UTC

2023-08-14 15:20:35 UTC

I’m often troubled by how the ones most loudly making the argument that “we should all read more conservatives”, like Matt Yglesias, don’t really have a good sense of what being conservative is, the rainbow-like variations in conservatism, the actual depth and richness of conservative philosophies, and even the conservatives right under their nose.

The doux commerce argument only works to the extent that the agents engaging in trade retain ultimate and indivisible sovereignty. Without it (which arguably most nations never really had), we enter into the world of weaponized interdependence, domination and manipulation through trade, and heightened, rather than diminished, risk for war.

2023-08-10 17:48:24 UTC

Thoughtful column by Sandbu here, and makes me think that if universalism is to be a tool for resisting domination, it must be centered around a meaningful discourse around the “equality of dignity” (not as some natural equality, but as something we have chosen to elevate through reflecting on the full scope of humanity’s social past)

Another plausible explanation: some Dems take wholly unpragmatic, unempirical advice about what to do to appeal to “independents”, whom they both identify with and think are pivotal to their electoral chances. Independents are a vague and amorphous category and ideology-bearing group that is easy for right-wing actors to project extremist, radical positions onto while also leveraging the fear that drives so-called “moderate” Dems

FWIW I disagree with Carlton’s “public” vs. “private” framing, as I find it unhelpful for illuminating the core issue. Everything is public at its core, even private enterprise. It is a public choice, therefore, of what functions are deemed private, i.e. exempt from certain forms of public proceduralism. It is absolutely necessary that some activities fall in the realm of permissive liberty, but the question of which is a public and social question, not of any “natural” public-private boundary
