"Netherlands won't participate in 2027 Eurovision Song Contest after all
The Netherlands will not participate in next year’s Eurovision Song Contest after all. The Dutch public broadcaster NPO has decided to withdraw. Insiders told AD that this was due to significant criticism of the decision to participate with Israel while the war still rages in Gaza.
After boycotting last year, AVROTROS, the broadcaster that managed the Dutch participation for years, returned the rights for the Eurovision Song Contest to the NPO. The broadcaster would not be involved in the song contest due to Israel’s continued participation and involvement in the situation in Gaza.
At the end of September, the NPO announced that it had decided that the Netherlands would return to the contest. It intended to structure the participation through an external team of experts, with the option for individual members of broadcasters to contribute.
The announcement was met with fierce opposition. The public broadcasters’ ombudsman received dozens of complaints, and around 400 NPO staff members sent a letter to the broadcaster, urging it to withdraw. They took serious issue with NPO giving more weight to “the desire to participate in an entertainment program” than to the “countless human lives lost” in Gaza.
The NPO was also unable to secure the necessary support for participation. All the Dutch broadcasters informed the NPO that none of their staff would help it with the Eurovision Song Contest, according to AD.
The Eurovision Song Contest will happen in Burgas, Bulgaria, from May 11 to 15 next year. It will still be broadcast on NOS, complete with Dutch-language commentary and a pre-show."

"Will Ousting Netanyahu Change Anything for Palestinians? Diana Buttu on Upcoming Israeli Elections
(video)
Israeli parliamentary elections are being held on Tuesday, the first since Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack and Israel’s subsequent assault on Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is currently embroiled in a corruption scandal in Israel, is up for reelection. On Friday, after two Israeli soldiers were killed at a checkpoint near Hebron, just days before Israeli polls are set to open, Netanyahu announced heavy restrictions on the movement of Palestinians out of the West Bank. Since then, Israeli forces have detained and expelled thousands of Palestinian residents from the area and begun home demolitions to clear the way for future Israeli settlements.
“The reason that they’re doing this is because this entire election is about who is going to be tougher on Palestinians,” says Palestinian human rights lawyer Diana Buttu. “What [Netanyahu is] trying to do in the lead-up to this is say to Israelis that ’I’m the only person who can provide you with security.’ So, while lighting the place on fire, he’s also selling water.” Buttu explains that Netanyahu’s opponents across the Israeli political spectrum are equally punitive toward Palestinians. “The fact that you have all of these parties that are advocating major war crimes and nobody is blinking says something very deep about Israeli society, but also about an international community that has fostered this and that has allowed this to brew for all of these years.”"

"“Hyperscale”: Paris Marx on Excess of Big Tech Data Empires & His Critique of Bernie Sanders’ AI Bill
(video)
We speak with tech journalist Paris Marx about his new book, Hyperscale: The Ambition and Excess of Big Tech’s Data Empires. In the book, Marx exposes the deceptive ways tech companies are taking resources from vulnerable communities in order to build massive AI data centers. “We have seen the tech companies that, back in 2019, 2020, wanted us to see them as climate leaders … completely throw their targets out the window in order to pursue generative AI and this data center buildout,” says Marx. He notes that after failing to connect to electrical grids in the locations where they were building data centers, some AI companies have pivoted to building “on-site gas plants,” further increasing dependency on fossil fuels.
Tech companies “want us to believe” that AI models are “starting to become so powerful that within 10 years they could decide that they want to wipe out humanity or a significant chunk of humanity,” says Marx. “That is a mix of science fiction and delusion … and it is also a very effective way to distract from the real harms that we’re seeing from these generative AI products.”"

About the LLM/AI and open source.
And choices in life.
I tested a Gentoo Linux installation and got stuck at the Grub part and I bailed out for now. DId an OpenBSD installation which went fine. Getting disk encryption to work was easy during installation, unlike a few years ago. Did a NetBSD installation and that didn't go too well but later I found out I missed a step in the installation. A new installation went fine. Then there's ChimeraLinux which I liked when I tried it a long time ago. And I like Haiku though as long as it is a single user (root) OS it is not ready for everything.
https://codeberg.org/ethical-foss/open-slopware#other-operating-systems
I do like the idea of what someone wrote on Mastodon last week : Run a minimal NetBSD installation on the desktop and then keep an off-line version of an old stable Debian handy on another computer.
Now that the USA has destroyed my blog (formely at A/I/NoBlogs) maybe I should get a new blog to write down these things. After all Mastodon is not for blogging or is it ? 😇

"Revealed: German “Anti-Semitism Expert” Driving Crackdown on Palestine Solidarity is Former Israeli Spy
A Munich-based “anti-Semitism expert” organizing political action helping restrict pro-Palestine protests across Germany is a former Israeli spy, MintPress can reveal.
Since October 7, 2023, Guy Katz, professor of international management at Munich University of Applied Sciences, has become one of the leading figures in German politics on the subject of Israel and anti-Semitism. Katz has founded numerous organizations purporting to fight anti-Semitism, spoke in parliament, and worked with police to help them crack down on anti-Israel speech. He is, however, reportedly a former spy for Israeli intelligence outfit, the Mossad—something that is never disclosed in the widespread coverage and amplification he receives in German and international media.

"The Hague Group: South Africa Leads Coalition Against U.S./Israel’s “Unilateral Bullying” of the ICC
(video)
At the United Nations this week, President Trump repeated his attacks on the International Criminal Court and urged other nations to pull out of the global tribunal. The United States earlier this year imposed sanctions on the president of the ICC and a senior prosecutor who was part of the team that issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for crimes against humanity in Gaza, and the Trump administration is reportedly preparing more sanctions against the institution itself. Meanwhile, a coalition of nations has formed to defend international law in solidarity with the people of Palestine under the banner of the Hague Group, which was established last year by Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Honduras, Malaysia, Namibia, Senegal and South Africa.
“It’s an absolute low point for the sacred grounds of the United Nations that President Trump has shown up here and attacked the international legal order,” says Varsha Gandikota, executive secretary of the Hague Group.
We also air remarks from South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola, who spoke earlier this week at the historic Riverside Church in New York City to urge respect for international law."

Bewaking zou mensen doorverwijzen

"‘I survived the Taliban to go to school – now the UK has blocked me from studying at Oxford’
Aisha Khurram has not seen her family in five years after she fled Afghanistan – now she won’t be able to fulfil her dream of studying at Oxford University due to new Home Office rules"
An Afghan human rights activist who was offered a place on a prestigious course at Oxford University has been blocked from entering the UK.
Aisha Khurram, a 27-year-old from Kabul, was awarded a rare place on a masters course in diplomatic studies at the university in May, just two months after the government implemented an “emergency brake” on visas for people coming from Afghanistan, Myanmar, Cameroon and Sudan.
She is one of 15 Afghan people offered places at the University of Oxford this academic year, freedom of information data shows, most of whom will be unable to start their studies after the Home Office reported a high number and proportion of visa-linked asylum claims are linked to the sponsored study route.
Ms Khurram told The Independent that after surviving the Taliban, separating from her family and having to retake her degree, she was heartbroken she couldn’t complete her education at one of the world’s most prestigious institutions not because of her ability – but because she’s Afghan.
“I think for me the most painful part was I actually crossed all the most difficult barriers. I survived [the] Taliban. I survived displacement. I had to rebuild my education and I had to get an offer from one of the most prestigious universities in the world."

(video)
The Montreal City Council is set to debate a controversial motion Monday calling on the Canadian city to suspend all institutional ties with the Israeli government. Avi Lewis, a leading Jewish Canadian politician and head of the progressive New Democratic Party, says it’s a reflection of widespread outrage among Canadians over Israel’s actions across the Middle East.
Pro-Israel forces “are on the defensive now,” says Lewis. “They still capture most of the political class and the mainstream media, but among the majority of people, we want to see our government step up and take a clear moral position against apartheid, against genocide and against the killing of civilians.”"

"Jewish anti-Zionist Tony Greenstein takes the stand in ‘terror’ trial"
Day three of Tony Greenstein’s trial at Kingston Crown Court before Judge Sarah Plaschkes KC saw the defendant take the witness stand. There was significant tension over what evidence the jury was permitted to consider.
Judge orders jury to leave court repeatedly
Tony Greenstein, a 72-year-old Jewish anti-Zionist, Marxist, and atheist from Brighton, faces charges under Section 12(1) of the Terrorism Act 2000 of inviting support for a proscribed organisation, Hamas, following social media posts published on 7 October 2023.
The defence team openly referred to evidence that the Crown and the court had decided the jury should not be allowed to see. The defence cross-examined police on the gap between the size of the original interview transcript and the heavily redacted one shown to the jury. Consequently, the judge ordered the jury to leave the court on several occasions in an attempt to prevent the defence from referring to excluded evidence.
Greenstein stated in evidence that the prosecution had actively resisted admitting his past writings because his decades-long opposition to religious fundamentalism directly undermined the Crown’s allegations.
Tony Greenstein’s heritage
In the morning, under questioning from his defence barrister, Lawrence McNulty, Tony Greenstein laid out his identity and heritage in detail. He told the jury he was raised in an Orthodox Jewish household as the son of a travelling rabbi who stood on the frontline at the 1936 Battle of Cable Street, helping erect barricades in east London to stop Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists from marching.
He testified that his father hated the Conservative Party due to widespread antisemitism in 1930s Britain.
Greenstein explained he went from a childhood within a Zionist family to abandoning Zionism at age 14 or 15, subsequently dedicating decades to socialist, anti-racist, and pro-Palestinian campaigning.
He told the court that Christians can also be Zionists and defined antisemitism by its original nineteenth-century meaning as the hatred of Jews. When asked about his view on religion from the stand, he quoted Marx, describing it as the “opium of the masses”.
There were frequent, sharp interruptions from the bench. When Greenstein described Gaza as a “human prison” and a “cage” where Palestinians were held under siege for 57 years, surviving on polluted water and strictly rationed electricity, Judge Plaschkes halted proceedings.
When the defence touched on the history of Zionism, previous escalations in Gaza, and casualty figures, with Greenstein stating at least 100,000 had died, the judge intervened.
‘That’s the problem with the ruling class’
Warning that the court was not tasked with examining the broader history of the Middle East, the judge directed the defendant to stay focused on the specific indictment. Tony Greenstein retorted from the witness box that:
that’s the problem with the ruling class in this country, they turn a blind eye to genocide.
Judge Plaschkes repeatedly ordered the jury to withdraw to the jury room while parameters of questioning were argued between counsel and the bench, reminding Greenstein that the court was not a political forum.
When proceedings resumed before the jury, the defence examined Greenstein’s public writing record on his website, azvsas.blogspot.com, which spans over 3,500 published articles since 2008 covering Palestine, gay rights, disability, and progressive causes.
The defence presented blog titles and excerpts from historic pieces where Greenstein had explicitly condemned Hamas, including articles titled “The lousy hamas government” (citing The Angry Arab and Israeli newspaper Haaretz) and “Hamas does its best to make Palestinian lives a misery”.
He also referenced a post titled “I support the Palestinians not Israeli created Hamas”, where he argued that divide and rule is a colonial imperial playbook and that Israel funded and armed religious movements to prevent a two-state solution.
Alleged clear distinctions
Giving evidence, Tony Greenstein stated he has consistently argued in over 20 blogs that national liberation movements cannot succeed under religious fundamentalist leadership. He described Hamas as a conservative traditional sect, noting their stance on homosexuality is a social taboo, but not executable like in Saudi Arabia. He pointed out that historical Britain was homophobic and that his father, who lost most of his family in the Holocaust, noted the only good thing Hitler did was kill all the gays.
His commentary on 7 October related to a tactical breach of an impregnable military perimeter after a 17-year blockade, comparing the event to historic Caribbean slave revolts. He testified that he had limited information on the day, but knew there was a breakout and felt it was justified.
He drew a clear distinction between supporting an act of resistance against military occupation and endorsing the organisation carrying it out, comparing it to supporting the French Resistance during the Second World War without endorsing the communists.
Asked directly by McNulty if he did, has, or ever supported Hamas, Greenstein stated he answers no. He said he supports it as part of the resistance, but as an organisation he does not support it. When asked if he would invite anyone to support Hamas as an organisation, he replied: “No, obviously not. It would be absurd.”
Addressing his post stating that Hamas should be congratulated for the breach, Greenstein explained it was a rhetorical figure of speech, adding that if he was the recruitment sergeant they think he is, he would not have started with his criticisms.
When defence counsel asked whether his post was an instruction for ordinary members of the public to contact and congratulate Hamas, Greenstein replied: “No… presuming they have the number, which I don’t.”
Cross examining Tony Greenstein
During cross-examination, prosecutor Kate Temple-Mabe faced the complex task of prosecuting an anti-Zionist Marxist defendant for allegedly promoting an Islamist organisation whose politics he has long opposed.
The Crown stated that it did not allege Tony Greenstein held wholesale or long-term ideological support for Hamas, but argued instead that his words on 7 October constituted an invitation of support in that specific moment for a “Gaza ghetto uprising”.
The prosecution questioned his reach on X and whether he wanted people to share his posts. Greenstein stated he was simply sharing political opinions rather than proselytising, adding that his reach was minimal as he believed his account was shadow-banned among feeds dominated by “lots of Elon Musk-type people ranting about immigrants”.
The prosecution focused on granular linguistic analysis, questioning Greenstein on his specific use of the words “one” and “we” in the tweet stating “whatever ones criticisms of Hamas, we should congratulate them”. Greenstein rejected the assertion that he was inciting followers to endorse a banned organisation, accusing the prosecution of an obsession with Hamas and maintaining he was offering political analysis of an anti-colonial counter-offensive.
The trial continues
The prosecution also cross-examined Tony Greenstein on later commentary from early 2024 involving Peter Tatchell regarding LGBTQ+ rights under Hamas governance. Greenstein argued that criticisms of reactionary social policies should be made at a different time and not weaponised to justify genocide. Greenstein reiterated that his focus during ongoing military actions remained centred on solidarity with the Palestinian people to get food and aid in, and stopping the bombing.
Following the conclusion of cross-examination, the jury was dismissed ahead of tomorrow’s closing speeches.

"‘BarclayS 5’ Palestine activists will not be tried as terrorists
Judge rules that damage caused during protest at bank branch not enough to merit terrorism sentencing

Five activists who broke windows and threw red paint at a Barclays Bank branch in protest over Israel’s genocide in Gaza will not be sentenced as terrorists, a judge has ruled.
Judge Robert Altham told a packed room at Preston Crown Court on Friday that the damage the activists caused with their August 2024 direct-action protest in Burnley was “significant”.
However, Altham said he was “not satisfied” that the damage met the statutory measures of “serious damage” required under the terrorism act.
Visibly relieved, the defendants filed out of the tense courtroom to a gathering of family and friends who cheered and clapped. “Thank God,” one said, hugging a friend.
Brendon O’Hagan, 28, Amanda Kelly, 31, Mohammed Malik, 28, Hmeera Atiqnisar, 31, and Alma Yaniv, 70, were convicted of criminal damage this June over the August 2024 protest which caused £212,805 worth of damage.
In the agreed facts of the case, the prosecution’s lawyers acknowledged that, at the time of the protest, Barclays provided investments and loans to Elbit Systems, Israel’s largest arms firm.
Two months later, it was reported that Barclays had sold all its Elbit shares.
The action was carried out in the name of Palestine Action almost a year before the group was banned under terrorism laws, and before it was illegal to be a member or supporter of the group.
It was only after the trial concluded that the presiding judge, Philip Parry, said he intended to consider whether to apply a “terrorist connection” when sentencing the defendants.
This came after the landmark decision days earlier to sentence four Palestine Action activists convicted of criminal damage as terrorists over their own direct action protest at an Elbit Systems site in Filton near Bristol.
It was the first time in British legal history that direct-action protesters convicted of criminal damage were sentenced as terrorists, a move human rights groups warned was a misuse of counter-terrorism powers.
‘Deep flaws’
Defendants and supporters said they feared the earlier decision had set a dangerous precedent.
If a terrorism connection was applied in their case, they could have faced lengthy prison sentences and treatment as terrorists for decades following their release.
But after the ruling which followed a two-hour hearing, the five activists celebrated with around 200 supporters who beat drums and carryied placards outside. Trucks, buses and cars passed by, honking support.
Addressing the crowd, Atiqnisar said that, while she was relieved by the ruling, she had not sought victory in the courtroom.
“We are not victorious in the court rooms of a state that is protecting and sustaining the most monstrous entity in modern history and its biggest weapons supplier,” she told the crowd.
“We are victorious when we silence the drones before they occupy the skies of Gaza and before they turn Palestinian men, women and children into pieces.”
Ruth Ehrlich, director of external relations at rights group Liberty, welcomed the news, but said the fact that “a terror connection could even be considered highlights deep flaws in the UK’s laws”.
She said the consideration alone is likely to have a chilling effect on people’s willingness to exercise their right to protest and stand up for what they believe in.
“What makes this case all the more shocking is that the jury and defendants were unaware that the terrorism connection could be applied after the verdict had been reached,” she said.
She called for an urgent update to the current definition of terrorism “to enable current and future governments to uphold their duty to safeguard the public, whilst protecting people’s rights and preventing overreach”.
The five are scheduled to be sentenced on 4 September.

"Exclusive: Palestine Action Lawyer Rajiv Menon Breaks Silence on Facing Contempt Charges in U.K.
(video)
A prominent human rights lawyer in the United Kingdom has been charged with criminal contempt for his closing speech in the trial of his client, Charlotte “Lottie” Head, one of four Palestine Action activists who were sentenced as terrorists over their involvement in a 2024 protest and raid on an Israeli weapons factory. Their sentencing marked the first time a British judge issued terrorism sentencing enhancements on people who were not actually convicted of terrorism. An additional 21 currently jailed Palestine Action protesters could face similar sentences, which carry multiyear prison terms.
The charges against Rajiv Menon are similarly unprecedented in British legal history. He is accused of encouraging a jury to acquit Head according to their conscience. Menon denies this accusation and says he was simply informing the jury of a prior legal case. He adds that, along with the U.K. government’s ban on Palestine Action under anti-terrorism laws, the case against him is intended to have a “chilling effect” against pro-Palestine protest, and carries “serious constitutional implications.”"

Boy George defends AI-assisted song amid backlash.
British Singer Boy George declared that he will fire any bandmates who refuse to perform his controversial AI-assisted 'pro-Israel' track, We Will Dance Again, during live shows.
The statement marks the latest escalation in a series of professional fallouts surrounding the single.
Within two weeks of announcing the track, the 65-year-old artist withdrew from playing King Herod in a West End production of Jesus Christ Superstar, parted company with his label manager over a refusal to release it, and fell out with Bandcamp after the platform rejected the song.
The threat to dismiss reluctant band members appears to apply to Culture Club members Roy Hay and Mikey Craig, who have worked with the singer on and off for more than 35 years following the departure of drummer Jon Moss in 2018.
Addressing the controversy on Instagram, Boy George defended his reliance on artificial intelligence during the writing process and rejected objections raised by fellow musicians."

"How complicit media tried to sell a genocide
Nearly three years into the Gaza genocide, many consumers of mainstream media have been left reeling by flawed and one-sided coverage of the horrors meted out by the Israeli army. They have turned elsewhere for vital information.
Two recently published books – The Complicit Lens: US Media Coverage of Israel’s Genocide in Gaza by Robin Andersen and How to Sell a Genocide: The Media’s Complicity in the Destruction of Gaza by Adam H. Johnson – need to be widely read, recommended and referenced.
The two books present unique strengths and perspectives. When taken together, they provide a comprehensive, detailed and devastating critique of the dominant US media landscape. Known variously as the corporate, establishment, mainstream and more recently the legacy media, their heinous coverage of the ongoing US-Israeli genocide in Gaza has exposed far-reaching bias, propaganda and anti-Palestinian racism."

"Palestinian children among those detained by Israel in West Bank raids
Settler violence escalates, with illegal outposts and frequent attacks reported across Ramallah, Hebron and Nablus.
Seven Palestinians, including two children, have been detained by Israeli forces in overnight and predawn raids across the West Bank, according to Palestinian local sources.
,.,..,,.,.,.
Palestinian sources recorded more than 11,000 attacks by Israeli forces and settlers across the West Bank in the first half of this year alone, with Hebron, Ramallah and Nablus the worst affected.
The figures echo recent United Nations warnings – including from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who has said settler violence and forced displacement are accelerating alongside plans to expand and legalise outposts, all of which the UN maintains have no legal validity under international law.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham added his own criticism on Saturday, calling the scale of the humanitarian crisis in Palestine “unacceptable” and saying his government was weighing further measures on Israeli settlements, including possible restrictions on arms exports.
Israeli settlers separately assaulted a Palestinian man and his wife on their own farmland on Saturday."

Random frustration #thoughts
In the last two days I saw a newspaper article with a photo of Elon Musk doing the Nazi salute. And today I was reading some news with the typical "The police said via X".
Is this the new normal ?
Nazi-salute photos in the press ?
Newspaper articles that will only have things like :
- "Politician A said so on X"
- "Meanwhile politician B replied on X"
- "The government announced on X"
- "As the video on X shows"
(This also shows that press is on X daily, which I do not consider to be a very good thing)
Elon Musk appears to radicalize even more, but several mainstream press appears to normalize Twitter further.
Is there no way out ? An emergency exit other than go live in the woods ?

“Cockroach Democracy”: Arundhati Roy on India’s Youth-Led Protest Movement & Modi’s Collapsing Support
(video)
A youth-led protest movement in India is demanding an end to the country’s status quo. Sparked by the leak of national exam questions, tens of thousands of young people have taken to the streets. They are protesting under the banner of the Cockroach Janta (People’s) Party — a new party named to reflect the words of India’s chief justice, who compared unemployed youth to cockroaches and parasites. The movement has only swelled in response to a violent crackdown on protesters. Although the protesters’ initial demands were for the resignation of the country’s education minister, “everything has shifted to directly attacking [Prime Minister Narendra] Modi,” says Indian writer Arundhati Roy, who joins us from New Delhi, the physical center of a movement that first found exponential success online. The erosion of democratic principles under Modi’s right-wing Bharatiya Janata (Indian People’s) Party is being contested on a large scale for the first time, says Roy. “It’s really a generation whose parents and grandparents wore those Modi masks and chanted 'Modi, Modi, Modi,' and got him into power. It is their children now who are saying the emperor has no clothes.”

"‘Gaza Has Ignited a Revolution’: Albanese Addresses Anti-Zionist Jewish Congress
Addressing the Second Jewish Anti-Zionist Congress, Francesca Albanese argued that Palestine has exposed the world’s failures while inspiring global resistance.
Addressing the Second Jewish Anti-Zionist Congress via video link from Palermo on Friday, UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese argued that the genocide in Gaza has evolved into far more than Israel’s war against the Palestinian people.
Instead, she said, it has become the clearest expression of a global political and ideological system that has normalized Palestinian dispossession while exposing the failures of international law, democratic institutions and the post-war international order itself.
The Destruction of Palestinians
Describing Palestine as both “a revealer” and “a mirror,” Albanese urged participants to view the current moment not only through the lens of Israel’s actions but through the responses—or silence—of governments, institutions and societies across the world."

"US greenlights Saudi nuclear enrichment without safeguards: Report
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman previously said he would acquire a bomb if Iran did
The Trump administration has greenlit Saudi Arabia's nuclear enrichment project, but with no safeguards in place to prevent the development of a bomb, CNN reported on Friday.
The draft deal, viewed by the news outlet, showed Washington's support for Riyadh’s civilian nuclear programme is still awaiting President Donald Trump’s signature, despite US-Saudi negotiations concluding in October.
Unnamed officials cited in the story indicated that the documents, which include the mandatory "123 agreement" and safeguards protocols, have not yet been sent to Congress, potentially for fear of bipartisan pushback.
It is unclear how long the president will wait, given Congress is likely to switch hands to a Democratic majority after the November elections, stymying his policy agenda."

Last year, there were fewer explosive attacks in the Randstad and Oost-Brabant. Opinion
"Forget being French president; Marine Le Pen is lucky not to be in prison. Why is she in public life at all?
The far right leader’s career is not the issue: it’s whether a politician with her record has a legitimate right to seek office
For many years, I have observed Marine Le Pen and her party and how they operate in France. I have heard their xenophobic, anti-immigrant rhetoric and felt it contaminate French political life. It is a rhetoric rooted in the history of a party founded by figures from France’s postwar far right. Nothing they do or say surprises me any more. But even by their standards the crime is extraordinary.
A French court of appeal confirmed last week that Le Pen was guilty of a central role in orchestrating a scheme that systematically embezzled public funds for more than a decade. That the investigation also took 10 years may explain the absence of public shock waves, or why the focus has been on Le Pen’s future political moves rather than on her misdeeds. So let’s recap."

The hexagonal floor installation, called Pindakaasvloer (Peanut Butter Floor), is a recreation of a work by Wim T Schippers conceived of in 1962 and first exhibited in 1969.
It is displayed alongside detailed instructions Schippers left behind after his death last month aged 83. They stipulate that curators should apply 15.6kg of non-chunky peanut butter to every square metre of the floor and spread it as “smoothly and monotonously as possible”. The work should not be stood or lied upon and not be approached “with any educational purpose”."

Ingezonden brief Trouw.
"Duitse boeren

State Secretary Annet Bertram (CDA), who is responsible for public transport, applauds the initiative. “It allows children to get acquainted with public transport at a young age. Start them young. And it is good for families on a tight budget.”
Making public transport free for children costs money. In this case, the elderly are footing the bill. The provinces and transport regions have decided to scrap the public transport discount for people over 65, choosing to focus on the “travelers of the future.”

"Free public transport for kids under 11 throughout the Netherlands from next year
From next year, children up to the age of 11 can travel by trams, buses, and metros free of charge throughout the Netherlands, the provinces and transport regions decided. This comes at the expense of the national discount for people over 65, which will disappear, RTL Nieuws reports.
Provinces and transport regions are responsible for the buses, trams, and metros in their area. Children under 3 can already travel for free on all public transport. On trains, children aged 4 to 11 travel for free when accompanied by an adult.
Currently, some regions and cities already offer free public transport for children. In Amsterdam, for example, children can travel for free as part of a temporary arrangement. In The Hague, parents can apply for a free pass for their child. But in other parts of the country, children pay full or a discounted price.
The provinces and transport regions have now decided to implement one uniform scheme for children covering the entire country from 2027."

"Greater Manchester Police found ‘disproportionately’ anti-antifascist
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) used “disproportionate and unnecessary force” in policing anti-racist and antifascist protesters, according to monitoring groups.
The antifascists were there to oppose Britain First marching through Manchester on Saturday 18 April 2026. The new report from Netpol, the Network for Police Monitoring, found that the police consistently used “disproportionate and unnecessary force” against antifascist protesters.
The 42-page report, titled ‘One Day in Manchester: the policing of the antifascist counter-protest against a Britain First demonstration in Manchester, Saturday 18th April 2026‘, launched in Manchester on 7 July."
