I realized that tomorrow marks 1 year from my call for help with Django Commons and wrote a short update on the state of things.

1 year later and there's a proper domain and site up for #Django Commons

I've been pushing for more mentorship in the #Django community for a while. I think an approachable step we can take today is holding more small group meetups.

I'm pretty frustrated by that take. There is still activity on the repository: https://github.com/encode/django-rest-framework/commits/master/

Have folks run into the problem of the parent class of a Model being changed, but the #Django migrations framework doesn't allow you to change the bases?

Woohoo! django-click transitioned over to #Django Commons last week 🥳

Thanks to GaretJax and FlipperPA for pushing that along! 💚

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate! I spent a few hours today collecting some resources for getting started contributing to Django. Let me know what else I'm missing.

Regarding privacy, probably not as much as I should. Though any person who uses a Google service should implicitly know it's not purely private information.
If I valued privacy above all, I would do things differently. There are other things that I must value more than privacy based on my actions though. I haven't gone through an assessment to determine what I value and when. Though I suspect it's my time and community value first.

I disagree that Django running by itself solves these problems. There's a lot that needs to be built out to do what Google Drive supports.

Because it's free, has infrastructure that I can control easily, it's easy for folks to pick up and understand, and it's easy to pull reports on.
It's not something "Django" competes with. It's a SaaS platform that has yet to be created would need to compete with and the immediate gap is pretty big.

I don't think there should be a decision like that. There'd be greater benefit by nudging people to where core conversations are happening. As Jeff said, conferences and foundations should exist in write-only in these other areas. Those messages could be "There's a super interesting discussion on Topic XYZ over on Platform A, here's the <link>"

With Djangonaut Space, I've noticed that applicants are way more likely to have X or LinkedIn accounts than others. The latter part is the part I struggle with. There's a large segment of python and django devs on X. I feel like as that platform is abandoned, we're creating a disconnect / making the divide bigger.

I guess I'm saying things are different for sole maintainers looking for a backstop and true community packages.

2024-10-23 22:06:19 UTC

- reply

For sure. I'm trying to not state things declaratively since I'm one of five.
But in this case of wanting assurances, that would lend itself to leaving them as PyPI owners to allow them to pack up and leave unilaterally (as they do now). Though if they transfer true ownership to the commons (meaning they step away), it feels like the admins should be the owners rather than the next maintainer.

2024-10-23 21:29:55 UTC

- reply

Though in both of your cases, if it's after enough time, it's starts with a conversation. The solo maintainer case might be gnarly if they didn't originally write it.

2024-10-23 21:27:27 UTC

- reply

So we are leaving people as owners in PyPI and on GitHub so they can bail unilaterally in the first few months. Originally I thought to remove PyPI owner rights after the onboarding period. There's a weird balance there.

2024-10-23 20:35:45 UTC

- reply

I think the major unknown in that is the first step. Is there agreement on the package needing to move out. What if it's split? How do we decide that?
The actual transfer steps are pretty easy and listed or docs are linked to.

I really love these lists!
I think there's a fair amount of risk in hiring an ED. I'm not sure it's one of those actions in which, no matter what you do, things move forward. If an ED fails to secure more funding, we're dramatically increasing our expenses.
It'd be great to see someone on the ballot who has experience in bringing an ED to a non profit and onboard them. That would go a long way in reducing that risk.

I've been having thoughts on to facilitate concerns, thoughts and questions from a maintainer to users. Right now, I'm thinking we could solve this partially with a package that injects common news somewhere into your development workflow.
I'd love to hear folks thoughts on this. I suspect many people have had thought about this in the past, so any insights are appreciated.

I just had the best chatGPT experience with the o1-preview. I asked two questions and got the information I needed.
"How do I run a postgresql query that fetches rows that have a time column with the hours of 22, 23, 0, 1, 2, 3". It gave me the idea of extracting the hour and doing an `IN` query.
The follow-up question on that thread was, "Can you write some python code that generates the list of hours between two times, inclusive bounds?" and it generated a function with tests.
