Looking more closely at how your Android phone works can explain why it is so difficult to develop open source alternative operating systems for these devices.

I have the 3AXL and have discovered that many alternative OSes work on this, because a lot of work has been done on that chip by the open source community. It's a great phone to test things out on, because it still works well (unlike the PinePhone, which is too slow for today's standards).

There is a free option (if you scroll further down) too, but the paid version has extras, like a snazzy glossary of terms and comment boxes that Henry interacts with, that make it well worth your while!

Here's a copy of the SN announcement to drop Listed:
As of December 31, 2026, we'll be retiring the Listed platform. For users who have used Listed, we wanted to let you know what this means for you.
- Your posts will remain privately stored in your Standard Notes account, so you'll still be able to access them.
- The website and your blog, including past posts and guestbook, will no longer be publicly accessible.
- The Listed interface, such as blog settings, will be removed from the Standard Notes app.
We launched Listed in 2019 as an experimental feature to give Standard Notes writers a way to publish their work. In recent years, however, the feature has become virtually unused as many other platforms supporting writers have emerged. So we've decided to sunset Listed and stay focused on our founding mission: to build the best privacy-first note-taking app available.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our team at help@standardnotes.com. Thank you for supporting Standard Notes.
Stay secure,
The Standard Notes team

Standard Notes is ending the Listed blogging platform.

I migrated my notes over to Joplin half a year ago and have been running them side-by-side, with a view to switching. I love SN but the feeling is that since Proton took over, it's not going anywhere. I share the disappointment about removing a neat feature like Listed on a paid-for application.

It's good. I did have to re-order the search providers, putting Serper and Linkup as the top two. I see different figures, from mid to high 70% penetration rate to 88% penetration rate of smartphones in EU. That still leaves 12% of EU's population (54 million people) unable to access key services due to age verfication.
If the issue is protecting kids from what social media and other platforms show them, then the pressure should be on those platforms to fix the issue, not on the entire EU population of all ages.

ok, I see. The article I wrote is aimed at people who don't know how to or don't feel familiar with flashing a custom ROM. It's intended as a first step.
About the bootloader, it is my understanding (I could be wrong, I should add!) that if you walk around with an unlocked phone, then someone who finds it and has the know-how could quite easily get into your phone (with your data on it).

2026-04-17 10:38:48 UTC

- reply

I have used those methods too, especially on kids' phones. One issue is that you have to leave the bootloader unlocked with /e/OS, which is not secure. As second is that it's not entirely clear what is or what isn't happening with Google services on /e/OS; not technical enough to understand. My own phone is GrapheneOS atm.

I’m confused as to why Von der Leyen is referring to “an app” (3:05 min) in her Age Verification announcement this week (https://audiovisual.ec.europa.eu/en/stories/M-009975).
I doesn't read like there will be one app for all EU citizens:
“One common set of standards and specifications, many different wallets”
“Every Member State will need to provide its citizens with at least one EUDI wallet.”
“Start building your EU Digital Identity Wallet solutions”
https://ec.europa.eu/digital-building-blocks/sites/spaces/EUDIGITALIDENTITYWALLET/pages/869793973/Technical+Specifications
She (or her writers) should have said “software protocol” or something like that.

I had a conversation with a friend who lives in Australia today. He said that his family members with teenage kids are saying that it’s ‘business as usual’ for Australian teens on social media. They find workarounds that quickly get shared amongst them. I wonder if the Australian government will do an assessment of the impact of their recent ban. It would be cynical if they didn’t.

Google Says Developer Verification Makes Android Safer. Critics Say It Just Makes Android More Closed
https://itsfoss.com/news/android-developer-verification/
“Under the new rules, F-Droid has no workable path forward. Compelling volunteer contributors to register their identities with Google runs against what the platform stands for.
“But claiming those app identifiers on developers’ behalf is equally impossible, since that would give F-Droid a kind of exclusive ownership over apps it has no right to own.
“F-Droid has been clear that if Google goes through this, it effectively ends the project as it currently exists.”

This was written as a complement to @npub12w6…2axu recent blog post about the I-have-nothing-to-hide argument. You can read that here:

Hi Jonah, The story is an effort to give feedback to the community from my perspective about something that isn't quite right. In my last post on PG, I wrote it is a 'take it or leave it' thing. I've currently muted notifications from PG because I do not wish to be drawn into the discussion any further.
