@nprofile…vuvh it is ironic and seeming un-self-aware to disclaim “social warrior” nearness when, c’mon, what is Linux if not a social warrior product?

@nprofile…vuvh are we? There seems to be an implicit assumption that patches come from burning down forests. I’m asking bracketing questions (hopefully in the spirit of Socrates) to try to get to the nut. If a model running on a single machine that’s capable of running on a self-contained battery that’s powered by the sun can generate good bug fixes, it seems fatal to the proposition that accepting AI-produced patches is inherently corrupt.
I have no problem with pointing an accusing finger at the profligate and wanton waste in the pursuit of limitless data centers, btw. That’s orthogonal, I suspect, to whether large language models were used in the detection and correction of software defects.

@nprofile…vuvh I’m not seeing much daylight between what you said no to and what you go on to describe as the issue.

@nprofile…vuvh I’m trying to understand something that seems unspoken here. Is the fundamental issue a premise that AI is evil, therefore anyone who doesn’t reject it is corrupt? I’m seriously just trying to make sure I understand what I’m reading.

@nprofile…wjfe threaten the oligarchs just as Putin did. They like their money, their power, their living-above-the-masses. They fall in line. “I’ll do whatever you want, just leave me alone”.

@nprofile…jpd3 @nprofile…8nj8 @nprofile…5lc3 giving up footholds would be wasting a lot of hard work and requiring that much (at least) again just to get back to parity. Also runs the risk of exposing ops and methods. Every aspect of this announcement is either dumb or outright capitulation.

@nprofile…fv4z he came to talk to a group of us at work not long after Cuckoo’s Egg was published. Wow, could he put away the chocolate milk and Tab! Saw him later at a party. He was typing on a PowerBook. “Whatcha working on, Cliff?” “I’m writing a book about the Hubble. Here, want to write a page?” I did.

@nprofile…48vs the assertion seems predicated on extracting profit. There are many ways to derive value. If you can help people into nice homes without profit, the act of helping can be the value that’s justification for you. Keep in mind that the property may appreciate in value. You can choose whether to let that appreciated value go into your portfolio, or use it to support an even lower rent. Using your resources to get people into decent homes at affordable rates might let them accumulate money to buy their own. And it’s a good way to do good. I guess I’m challenging the ALAB assertion and assumptions.
