Not sure how you can include zombies but expect science based answers. More likely than any of these is widespread famine following human caused factors like war and climate change.

With defence spending, also consider where the money goes. Europe buys a lot of American kit so the money leaves the local economy. The US gov. is subsidising local jobs and creating an industry that can sell abroad. I hope Europe steps up to defend Ukraine but makes sure not to buy American. For a war, cheap stuff at volume may be more effective than the fancy kit anyway.

It depends what you're using a VPN for. If it's for privacy, whichever company controls your exit point to the Internet sees where your traffic goes. A VPN company at least has it's reputation to preserve because privacy is often their selling point. I run wireguard at home and connecting to that protects me from being snooped on when using public WiFi. With a hosted VM to get around TV streaming Geo blocking you'll often be blocked due to the nonresidential IP.

ZFS send tends to send data in bursts, presumably it needs time to prepare. You can handle different datasets in parallel. Also try mbuffer and for a dedicated network link, jumbo frames.
