Wario64 linked because the original is gated. This would be part of the 1600 layoffs coming over a 12 month period. My guess is any studio that's about to ship a game, like Gears of War: E-Day, is going to be targeted most.

I'm glad it's highlighted on Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown in particular, because that was the first game I'd bought from Ubisoft in years, and the extra launcher deterred me from considering buying any of their other games for a long while still. EA still has launchers on older games like It Takes Two and A Way Out and Dragon Age II and Inquisition that create obstacles for LInux compatibility and offline play, but newer titles like Split Fiction and The Veilguard no longer have the extra launcher problem. It's good to see Ubisoft following this trend, and hopefully they can stop standing in the way of their own success.

And posting genuine news about what is going to be one of the biggest gaming events of our lifetimes just gets downvoted here. Come on, people; it's clearly relevant. You don't have to upvote it, but then when people downvote anything they personally dislike, you end up with people who only get their gaming news here saying, "I've never heard of [one of the biggest games of the year]."

Game Pass Ultimate: 15 hours / month
Game Pass Premium: 10 hours / month
Game Pass Essential: 5 hours / month
And if you'll allow me to editorialize, there's a popular enough conspiracy theory that these platforms want to funnel you into cloud gaming for constant subscription revenue. I think the Why We're Making These Changes section is exactly why these services will never be able to deliver that service at a price people are willing to pay. It's expensive to provide this service, and they're making sure they don't lose any money on it by charging at least what it costs to provide.

The official title was such marketing speak that I hope no one blames me for changing it. Seemingly this only means the Xbox app on PC and not stores like Steam.

I mean...how big is that backlog and how much are you playing on the go? There's been no better device for handheld gaming, IMO, though I can see why it isn't tempting at that price.

Whenever Steam makes a controversial decision, Epic always takes the opposite stance, like on NFTs. Unfortunately, not once has Epic done this on something that I felt would be better for me as the consumer. Here's some low-hanging fruit: being able to tell what kind of multiplayer a game has, or how much of a game I get to own with my purchase, is awful on every store, including GOG. Steam has a tag to indicate that a game has LAN multiplayer, but plenty of games have it and don't list it. There is no tag to say, "you can host private servers for this game, whether on LAN or internet". If a store took a stance to answer these kinds of questions for me, that store would fare better in my eyes. But of course Epic won't be the ones to do it; their big cash cow is a live service game that must be run through them.

They did have the wisdom to use Fortnite's proceeds to make something like a Steam competitor that both takes a lot of startup capital and also has the potential to wildly exceed Fortnite's future review, but they did not have the wisdom to make a store that customers would actually want to use for any reason except giveaways.

I mostly lurk here, and I know we've had this discussion come up a number of times since Discord's age verification changes were announced, but I figured this video offers value for the walkthrough and comparative analysis. Like me, the video authors aren't seasoned self-hosters, and I've still got a lot to learn. Stoat and Fluxer both look appealing to me for my needs, but Stoat seemingly needs self-hosted servers to route through their master server (unless I'm missing something stupid) and I replicated the 404 for Fluxer's self-hosting documentation seen in the video, so it's looking like I'm leaning toward a Matrix server of some kind. Hopefully everyone looking for the Discord exit ramp is closer to finding it after this video.

The full article that was hinted at in interviews last week.
> There are likely a few reasons behind this shift. One is that several recent PlayStation games have not sold well on PC.
Interesting...
> But the strategy has been muddled and confused many players. Most PC releases arrived months or years after the games came to PlayStation. The cadence was never consistent, and the announcements appeared to be haphazard. The company also upset PC players by asking them to create PlayStation Network accounts to access many of the games.
I love Horizon: Zero Dawn. I have not played Horizon: Forbidden West. By the time it came to PC, Sony started making PSN logins necessary to even authenticate the game in the first place, which is basically just the worst kind of DRM. They've reverted this policy, but now I don't trust them. They put out a handful of games on GOG where I don't have to trust them, and I'll probably still pick a few of those up one day, but Forbidden West isn't there. Seems to me that they have no idea how badly they screwed up this rollout themselves. Oh, Uncharted 4 didn't do too well on PC? Where are the PC versions of Uncharted 1-3? Where can I play the original God of War trilogy? I'm not buying a PlayStation no matter how many exclusives you lock up there, so I'll just continue to not play your handful of exclusives.
Anyway, that's my two cents.

His full story is forthcoming, but I don't know how that squares with incoming PC ports for Death Stranding 2 and the sequel to Kena. Maybe because they're only Sony published? Exclusivity of a handful of games that I may or may not be interested in still isn't going to make me want a PS5, personally.

To be honest, Epic is doing a good job of tearing down walled gardens in places like mobile, and we'll probably be better off for it. But yeah, they've done a terrible job of competing with Steam.

At this rate, the PS6 will be out by the time this game is ready.

Cancelled because a black man killing the Klan, after all the morons complaining about Yasuke, was going to be too controversial of a video game in our (Americans') "unstable" country.

2025-09-26 18:21:10 UTC

It's true. Reviewers rave about a game, I pick it up and play it, and they're raving about a new one before I've finished that last one. I've got a list of 20+ games that came out this year that I still haven't gotten around to. I might get through 5 of them before the new year. And you know, if wouldn't hurt my ability to play more games if more of them were shorter.

I'll be honest: I think matchmaking is just a better experience for how I like to play FPS games. I never got a sense of "community" from sticking with a given server; I would come to find something like it via Discord years later but not just from frequenting a given game server. My server browser experience was mostly that I'd join a game in a progress, as other people come and go from a game in progress, and I wondered what the point of the match was if the teams weren't even the same at the end of the match as when they began. Most people's default when running a server was to turn player numbers to max and, in Battlefield's case, "tickets" needed to win as well, but just because the numbers are bigger doesn't mean that it's better pacing for a match, for instance. Matchmaking sets the defaults and ensures a pretty consistent experience from start to finish of each match.
This comment from the developer is true, too.
> "Matchmaking servers spin up in seconds (get filled with players), and spin down after the game is over," Sirland wrote in a thread on X last week. "That couple of seconds when servers lose a lot of players mid-game is the only time you can join, which makes it a tricky combination (and full of queuing to join issues).
My preference for the matchmaking experience is reflected across the audience they cater to, and it contributed to an industry focus on matchmaking and the end of server browsers.
But we still need real server browsers.
If we bought a game, we should be able to do what we want with it, including running those max player/max ticket servers that run 24/7 on one map. We should be able to do it without DICE/EA's permission, on our own if we so choose, without salaried staff running master server operations, because one day the revenue this game brings in will not justify the costs to keep it going. We should be able to deal with cheaters by vote kicking them from the server rather than installing increasingly invasive mandatory anti cheat solutions that don't even fully solve the problem anyway, because it's unsolvable.

At this point, I'm convinced that most developers have forgotten how to make a multiplayer game that isn't live service. Larian still remembers, but you'd think some people who make action games would remember too.

You know that personal film project they claimed one of the founders was distracted by? It was a Subnautica film they asked him to make.

How do terms of service give them root level access?
EDIT: For the record, I've been playing through this whole series in the middle of when they rolled out these EULA changes, and I wish them the best of luck in getting root access to my machine, but I promise you they didn't get it via Proton.

Given the things I'd like to see GOG investing in, it sounds irresponsible to buy Times Square ad space, but that's just a gut reaction that's not based on any real numbers.

From Jason Schreier. "The plural of 'anecdote' is not 'data'," but this is some analysis from Schreier seemingly rooted in many anecdotes. The long and short of it is that development on AAA games tend to routinely hit bottlenecks where entire portions of a team are waiting for some other team to unblock them so that they can continue to get work done.
