@npub1vgz…37vz can't answer that, but according to the IMF report the total explicit subsidies worldwide in 2022 (i.e. excluding externalities such as the cost to taxpayers of the impact on the environment and health) was USD1.3 trillion.

UK explicit fossil subsidies for 2022:
Petroleum:
producer subsidy $1.8b
Natural gas:
consumer subsidy $15.7b
producer subsidy $0.9b
Total explicit UK fossil fuel subsidies for 2022: $18.9b

People are often surprised at how recently France stopped using the guillotine for executions (1977) but the US still cooks people to death with the electric chair and I know which I see as more humane.

@npub1mru…3cxz There's also good evidence from a study in Copenhagen that cyclists break the rules a lot less than drivers where there's good cycle infrastructure. A lot of rule-breaking turns out to be where cyclists have to use infrastructure designed for motor vehicles.

@npub1skm…r8tj there is a kerb between. In many cases you would want to add wands, bollards or some additional separator, but they don't seem to be needed in this location.

2023-08-20 19:51:31 UTC

Quality cycle infrastructure:
✅Clear separation between pedestrians, bike riders and motor vehicle drivers
✅Coloured asphalt
✅Wide and straight
✅Priority for bikes crossing side entrances
✅SuDS for drainage
Well done Salford.

Is Starmer being cowardly? Yes, but in the context of a 2019 socialist campaign delivering their worst result since 1935.
Is Davey being weak on Brexit? Yes, but in the context of Swinson fighting to rejoin in 2019 and losing her seat.
Winning is a prerequisite for change

I walked all around Piccadilly Gardens and the Northern Quarter at 7pm last night, then back through NQ at 10pm. Didn't see a single copper on the beat. Has Greater Manchester Police effectively outsourced policing of those areas to private security staff in the pubs and clubs?

2023-08-20 07:14:27 UTC

Yesterday, with two fellow Walk Ride Greater Manchester volunteers, I went on a two-hour bike ride around Manchester and Salford with three Stockport councillors. Cllrs Abell and West (Lib Dem) and Frizell (Green) saw segregated cycleways, SUDs, modal filters, cyclops junctions and more.
Stockport is above average on cycle infrastructure, but not great - and too cautious about reallocating road space. Hopefully this gave the councillors more ideas on what can be achieved.

For all its faults, our world economic system has seen a collapse in the percentage of people living in absolute poverty.
For almost all of human history, nearly everyone lived with the imminent threat of disease, starvation and death.
In 200 years we've reversed that. It's an incredible achievement.
