It's just like, I'm already crippled with anxiety and lack of self esteem, and then almost every single goddarn time shitheads show up and get into a fight with me, or someone takes the worst possible faith interpretation of what I'm saying, and not a single soul of everyone that I've had friendly relations with for years wants to stick up for me.
I know I'm not in the wrong in this nor many of the other cases and I'm so goddarn tired of always being made out to be the only odd one out.

Just recently when I vented about that here, someone was like "maybe it's a you problem then" only for it to turn out that this person had a grudge against me because I didn't want to talk to them about anime on IRC or some shit like that that they then took as offence and brooded with for years.
(seriously I scoured the logs and read every interaction, I have no clue what got them so pissed other than me being indifferent to them about discussing media in a programmer channel)

I haven't gone in a couple weeks because I got tired of being the only woman there every time, and I haven't done actual gamedev in a long while either.
Some of the folks I used to talk most with in the past also hadn't come much anymore or didn't talk to me anymore
so I'm now considering just pulling the plug.
I hate how every goddarn place I go, I end up getting into situations that are so emotionally taxing for me that it just does not make sense anymore to stick around.

So my office workstation is taking an inordinate time to boot and I'm trying to figure out wtf is going on.
systemd-analyze tells me:
Startup finished in 51.414s (firmware) + 8.036s (loader) + 976ms (kernel) + 1min 7.909s (initrd) + 14.737s (userspace) = 2min 23.074s
And that initrd time seems insane. Looking at the systemd-analyze plot, all of the devices take an insane amount of time. I can't figure out why. Any ideas?

Having watched the Challenger doc and thinking about all this LLM policy crap again, this fact about disaster prevention occurs to me:
If you prevent a disaster, most times, nobody will know about it. All we will be able to see are the costs incurred by the caution taken to prevent a potential disaster.
This is especially bad when coupled with capitalism loving to cut "expenses". Because there was no disaster (because of the caution), it leads to a false sense of security.

I'm not sure what you're observing is new? It seems to me like this is how things have always been, and many have already mused on why this insular nature seems so pervasive or whatever.
I personally don't really care, to be honest. I've never been interested in fostering or building the "community," I've just done what I did because I felt like I could help certain things right there in the moment, not out of any other intention.

2026-04-29 15:07:05 UTC

- reply

I'm still invested in Lisp as a technology and the maintenance of my projects. I'm not going to switch away from that pile.
I just have to be real about my involvement with the broader "community". This trend has been going on for many years now-- ceasing to read the IRC channels for the most part, leaving Discords, quitting Reddit, etc.
All of those places have just provided more frustration than benefits for me, and I don't have the youthful chutzpah to still sit around despite that anymore.

2026-04-29 15:01:25 UTC

- reply

And I have to be honest, with my own personal life changes in recent years, I just don't really feel as much of a connection to the lisp "community" anymore as I used to.
In general I feel much less comfortable in places stuffed to the brim with men. Not that I feel like I'm necessarily in danger or anything like that, but I just don't really feel connected is more the point.
I kinda want to spend my very limited social energy and money on other things these days.

2026-04-29 14:58:30 UTC

- reply

Which I'd be fine with, to be honest. I feel like I've more than done my part over the years, and it has been over ten years now that I've been going every single year.
For more than half of that time I've also been significantly involved in the organisational aspects of it: remaking the website, handling the transition to a hybrid online conference, handling the live streaming on-site, and last year doing all the local chair work to host the conference.

2026-04-29 14:52:04 UTC

To be honest after the kinda nonsense that went down at last year's European #Lisp Symposium (#ELS25) with regards to folks touting LLMs, I am.... apprehensive about this year's.
I'm still going, but ... you know. It might be the last one if the vibes for me have turned rancid.

You know, every time I think about how horrendously inefficient larger companies are and how, despite comparatively nobody doing fucking anything, they still make profit while small companies' employees work their ass off and get nothing, I just
Anger isn't really the right way to describe how I feel about that.
Bafflement? A state of overwhelming confusion and injustice?
"Capitalism leads to the most efficient allocation of resources" lmao
Just lol forever that people actually believe this

In mastodon's case it's not the users of the instance that are the issue, but rather that federating means copying all of the media the server touches locally. Even my piss instance with just me on it quickly ate up 50+ gigs of space from all the federated media it mirrored.

In all seriousness though I think 99% of the cost in something like mastodon is image and video hosting. That shit eats data and perf like nothing.

Despite me ostensibly, hypothetically, being forbidden from working, quite a few things happened anyway, so this update is no less beefy than the others!
