Billy’s new single 10,000 Miles channels Willin’ but the trucker has grown increasingly weary of the road and less willing to be separated from his new family with Dallas Alice.
ft. the bass harmonica of Mikey Raphael (of Willie’s band) and the production signature of T Bone Burnett. Looking forward to the full album drop next week.
The video is a tear jerker.

Ngl, I was unaware that Melt the Guns was a 2,051-show bustout last covered by #Phish in 1987 before last night, and I was only vaguely familiar with #XTC until a recent thread by tastemakers @nprofile…a4uw and @nprofile…n5z9 (iirc) sent me on a shallow dive that was just deep enough to spark a connection when the song started, and now like many other Phish-covered artists before, I have a greater appreciation for the original.

@nprofile…n5z9 I'm curious to hear how they sound with the new guitarist. Dave Harrington played a big role in TC 1.0

Herbie Hancock - Thrust (Columbia, 1974)
Long before Victor Glover made history as the first black man to orbit the moon, Herbie piloted a synth-controlled spaceship to extraterrestrial Machu Picchu, propelled by jazz-funk thrusters.

warm blanket doesn't do justice to the feeling of being 10 ft from Medeski's Leslie speaker. A cathartic experience that brought tears to my eyes.
the other guys - Lage, Roeder, Wollesen - weren't bad either

@nprofile…p8cy great list! a couple more of my go-to's:
MMW https://mmwhistory.com/index.html
Billy Strings https://billybase.net/
the latter has deepened my listening/discovery in real time and was sorely missed when it went offline for a bit last year

@nprofile…p8cy perhaps not on the same plane but there's a constellation connecting Flying Lotus to those stars you mentioned. Most literally on You're Dead! (e.g., the sequence Ready err Not - Moment of Hesitation ft. Herbie himself) but I hear common elements on the preceding records too: Until The Quiet Comes and Cosmogramma (named after a mondegreen misheard from his great aunt Alice Coltrane)

I haven't been able to catch much live music this fall but 2026 is shaping up nicely with tickets to:
Taper's Choice / Rich Ruth
Richard Thompson
Julian Lage Quartet (ft. Medeski, Roeder, Wollesen)
(I may also have refundable hotel reservations in vegas just in case the #phish sphere rumors are true and I score tix and can make it work...)

@nprofile…szc4 I suppose the extirpation of natural predators (wolves, mountain lions) along with supplemental food from humans interact to extend the expected lifespan of individuals like Limpy, as long as she avoids disease, vehicles, and hunters. I think bobcats and coyotes are more successful preying on fawns but maybe they could take down an injured adult. Better than starving.

Cyro Baptista has quite the resume. Love Trey but TAB is essentially a footnote among collabs with the likes of John Zorn, Herbie Hancock, Yo-Yo Ma, and many others: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyro_Baptista
Same could be said of Dezron, also overqualified for TAB, but I'm glad Trey recruited him and he gets paid

@nprofile…q5jc @nprofile…szc4 having lived in the south for most of my life (I only briefly escaped, though I don't exactly fit in culturally), in my experience the most reliable demarcation of "The South" is the sweet tea line, i.e., where sweet is the norm, before it fades to unsweet in NoVA, south FL, etc.
I myself don't do the high test sweet anymore but still go for "half and half tea", which is another southernism I suppose.
I'll add collards to the food list, slow cooked with pork and vinegar.

I don't need to hear another jamband cover of reggae, phish included

2025-10-17 13:30:50 UTC

I'm not saying these covers are all *better* than the originals (some are) but they are the definitive versions of the songs for me, i.e., I knew them first and no matter how many times I hear the original, it can't supplant the cover in my psyche. Some are obvious, others date me as a 90s kid. Yours?
Respect - Aretha
All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
Morning Dew - Grateful Dead
Statesboro Blues - Allman Brothers
Hard To Handle - Black Crows (closely followed by GD)
Knocking On Heaven's Door - Guns N' Roses
The Man Who Sold The World - Nirvana
Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley - Phish
Roses Are Free - Phish
(I could include other Phish covers but these stand out)
props to Otis & Dylan for writing 2 songs each
*excluding traditional songs, many of which I associate with Doc Watson, Jerry, and various other translators

leave it to a side project of indie rock musicians to capture the essence of jamband in studio more effectively than jambands whose live prowess is neutralized by studio production and futile attempts at mainstream crossover

been hearing lots of Dead & Co on the SXM GD channel lately (for a few seconds, that is, before I reflexively change the station). No judgement of heads riding into the sunset with Bobby & Mickey live, but does anyone voluntarily listen to D&C recordings when they could hear the real thing? I guess management is pushing sphere tix. #GratefulDead

#bluegrass heads know what's up - David Grier should be way higher on this festival bill. I mean, I enjoy many of the Suwanee regulars, and I'm a sucker for grassy Dead tunes, but c'mon, Grier's in a different class of pickers.

I like Bill Laswell's Dreams Of Freedom (Ambient Translations Of Bob Marley In Dub) more than I probably should. It could have gone so wrong but I think he nailed it, stripping down Bob's songs to their roots, with choice punctuations by the I Threes. https://album.link/us/i/1440912470
Laswell is so prolific and his discog is all over the place. Can anyone recommend other records with similar vibes, produced by Laswell or others? #ambient #dub #BillLaswell (1/2)
