Some of my impressions from #OpenTransport2026: https://volkerkrause.eu/2026/10/17/open-transport-community-conference-2026.html
It's amazing how this community has come together in recent years from various fragmented/local efforts and across roles and organizations. Unsurprisingly we can achieve a lot more when we collaborate.
A bunch of things seen as "normal" today (such as #Transitous) I would have considered entirely out of reach not too long ago. And this is all still just at the beginning.

2026-10-15 06:31:51 UTC

Celebrated 30 years of #KDE with a few people yesterday. Not only were there active contributors who hadn't been born yet when this all started, there were also kids who's parents have met via KDE. It's amazing how multi-generational this has become :)

Off to Bern for #OpenTransport2026! Four days of learning, connecting and collaborating around topics relevant for #Transitous and #KDE Itinerary :)

Joined #BoilingTheOcean 13 for a bit yesterday, we now have the first pieces for XDG Intent discovery for #KDE.

My impressions from #KDE's #Akademy2026 in Graz last week: https://volkerkrause.eu/2026/10/03/kde-akademy-2026.html
Lots of stuff to work on and follow up with :)

#Akademy2026 starts today! At 17:55 I'll talk about how we use continuous delivery (CD) builds for Itinerary, and show a way how we could potentially reduce the entry barrier for contributing to #KDE applications - https://conf.kde.org/event/11/contributions/319/

Yes, KWeather is available for Android, but not in the Play Store I think, only in KDE's F-Droid repositories: https://community.kde.org/Android/F-Droid

Not of Phosh of course, but about a dozen or so of KDE's (mobile) applications are available for Android as well, yes.

2026-09-13 08:28:15 UTC

- reply

That's going to be a lot more work, but yes, I'd like to get that eventually as well.
There's also still some work needed to polish the application and framework side of this, being able to test this on Linux now helps quite a bit well.

2026-09-13 06:31:01 UTC

Support for the xx-cutouts-v1 #Wayland protocol landed in #Qt yesterday, which means Qt's SafeArea API will then also work with Wayland compositors supporting this protocol.
So far only @npub122d…rrm4 implements this on the compositor side, now #KDE apps will have the means to stay away from display cutouts/notches there automatically, reusing all the work we have done for this on the app and framework level for Android already.

There are a few notes from the discussion in https://pad.gnome.org/C6FAHLFkQUSmujkvSGz2tQ?view. WebAuthn is one of the usecases we discussed, in both directions (ie. using an external token but also a Linux phone "being" the external token). We'd eventually want to have a portal API that can support all that, but none of that exists yet at this point.

small self-hosted instances are generally not a problem (and we see a few hundred of those), it's mainly medium-sized public ntfy instances with a few 100 to a few 1000 users (tchncs, adminforge, murena, etc)

Last year we didn't see those problems yet, but the recent heatwaves essentially produced the same amount of notifications in one go as well.

2026-09-10 10:49:43 UTC

Compared to last year we had more than 100x the users on [@foss_public_alert_server](https://floss.social/@foss_public_alert_server ) for this year's national alert test in Germany. And it showed the same bottlenecks we had already seen during the recent heat waves: notification delivery is slowed down and eventually stalls entirely due to about 40% going to push servers that rate limit under such conditions. Mozilla's and #KDE's push servers carried the bulk of the notifications, without hitting limits.

Joined #BoilingTheOcean a bit today, for discussing #NFC and portal APIs (and a small sidetrack on ICAO Doc 9303). Broad agreement on what we want between #GNOME and #KDE, still some research to do on how we best get that from the two and a half or so user space NFC daemons there are.

Nice, I was wondering whether such a bridge exits but hadn't found any, thank you!

Looking at where we are with #NFC for #LinuxMobile in general, and for #KDE applications and #PlasmaMobile in particular: https://www.volkerkrause.eu/2026/08/15/kde-nfc-integration.html
The kernel level seems reasonable, anything in userspace is in a less convincing state unfortunately. Fixing and completing this shouldn't be too hard, but needs a few decisions on the direction.

The back key issue is a known problem in the underlying toolkit, affects only some Android versions apparently, which makes it hard to track down unfortunately.

2026-07-11 07:18:36 UTC

At HTW Berlin in Schöneweide for working on tagging and modelling issues of indoor spaces in #OSM.
Some of this has proven challenging over the past years as it requires to carefully balance easy mapability and maintainability, the needs of 2D, 3D and tactile rendering, graph- and area-based routing, BIM compatibility, and being able to model all accessibility-relevant properties. Let's see if locking people from all those areas in a room for two days helps :)

Interesting analysis, and indeed a perfect topic for @npub13py…9w0z :)
There's a few people in #opentransport:matrix.org looking at this for archiving static and realtime data as well. While the focus there seems to be efficient differential storage, there's probably quite a bit of overlap.
For offline routing there's also experiments using extracts in the MOTIS-internal data format in client apps directly, together with CoMaps.

2026-06-27 10:35:45 UTC

There's nothing standardized I'm aware of, this is all small system vendor specific scripts that pull more or less raw GPS data from an API endpoint on the Wi-Fi network, the same thing that usually backs the map view in onboard portals.

Not sure that's possible, we don't touch the font at all, this is the default Qt gives us. And it would need to be done consistently in all components that provide UI as well. The proper solution is to fix this in Qt.

That's not intended and doesn't affect all devices. It's an old Qt problem that keeps resurfacing since quite some time, unfortunately never on a device where I could actually debug it :(

I'd say this isn't even limited to flights but common to all (long distance) travel. Both multi-criteria routing algorithms and UIs for more manual control (e.g. [@trans_europe_planner](https://fosstodon.org/@trans_europe_planner )) are being looked into to help with that.
Cost/availability is currently tricky to consider given the lack of open data. But e.g. optimizing uninterrupted sleep time on night trains could be possible.
Either way, the first step is getting the basic schedule data in, all the above builds on top of that.

2026-04-26 08:58:21 UTC

Experimenting with adding international flights to @npub1c64…jwxh. Performance seems to hold up and we indeed get working multi-modal door-to-door routing from e.g. Brussels to Tokyo.
There's a few issues with the router cheating around minimum transfer times that need to be sorted out before this could be deployed though.

From the way to #FOSDEM here's what happened around #KDE Itinerary in the past two months: https://volkerkrause.eu/2025/01/31/kde-itinerary-december-january-2025.html - A redesigned timeline UI and #Transitous completing the migration to #MOTIS v2, to just name two things.

2025-01-18 11:33:19 UTC

Going to #FOSDEM 2025: there will be a #KDE stand, a talk to celebrate #Transitous' first birthday and @npub1ra6…xx6e and I will present [@foss_public_alert_server](https://floss.social/@foss_public_alert_server ) - https://volkerkrause.eu/2025/01/18/kde-fosdem-2025-preview.html

Some notes and impressions from attending #38C3: https://volkerkrause.eu/2025/01/04/kde-38c3-impressions.html
As a direct result of that a few changes have already landed in #KDE Itinerary's travel document extractor towards decoding FCB v3 ticket barcodes as used by e.g. Trenitalia.

2024-12-30 11:12:17 UTC

Today @npub1ra6…xx6e and I will talk about free and open infrastructure for receiving emergency and weather alerts (aka [@foss_public_alert_server](https://floss.social/@foss_public_alert_server )) at #38C3, 16:40 on stage HUFF - https://events.ccc.de/congress/2024/hub/en/event/wie-man-auch-mit-foss-katastrophen-warnungen-bekommt/
Live stream should be at https://streaming.media.ccc.de/38c3/huff

Spontaneous #KDE sprint in @npub1rcz…uu2f's kitchen yesterday. Last time we did that it started the work on the per-trip timeline view of Itinerary. This time a lot of effort had to go into damage control due to the rumored imminent shutdown of Deutsche Bahn's Hafas API endpoint that much of the FOSS public transport tooling depends on.

New trip map view, per-trip statistics, Android platform integration improvements and preparations for #Transitous moving to #MOTIS v2 - the past two month around #KDE Itinerary: https://volkerkrause.eu/2024/11/30/kde-itinerary-october-november-2024.html

Another direct result of #Akademy2024: Progress on building #KDE Frameworks and apps statically, should help with making Android APKs more compact and removes an obstacle for exploring iOS support - https://volkerkrause.eu/2024/10/18/kf6-static-builds.html

2024-10-12 08:14:31 UTC

Some recent improvements on the Android platform integration of #KDE applications, in large parts a direct result of #Akademy2024 - https://volkerkrause.eu/2024/10/12/kde-android-news-oct-2024.html

2024-10-03 08:59:43 UTC

New per-trip timeline view, extended public transport location search, new transport icons, new website, increased public transport data coverage and many more improvements: it's been a busy two months for #KDE Itinerary again - https://volkerkrause.eu/2024/10/03/kde-itinerary-august-september-2024.html

2024-09-20 08:23:31 UTC

At #matrixConf today and tomorrow.
Conference number 4 and conference day 10 this month.

2024-09-14 06:44:46 UTC

Barely back from #KDE #Akademy2024 and already off to the #Nextcloud conference.
Managed to write down some Akademy impressions inbetween though: https://volkerkrause.eu/2024/09/14/kde-akademy-2024.html

2024-09-04 10:39:31 UTC

Here we go, on the way to Würzburg for #Qt Contributor Summit and #KDE #Akademy2024!

2024-08-31 07:59:10 UTC

Very much looking forward to #KDE #Akademy2024! I'll speak about KDE's CI/CD infrastructure together with Ben, @npub1c7k…xune and Julius as well as about the #OSM venue indoor maps in our conference companion app - https://volkerkrause.eu/2024/08/31/kde-getting-ready-for-akademy-2024.html

2024-08-11 11:32:42 UTC

Changed #KDE Itinerary to use a new API for Deutsche Bahn coach layouts after the previously used one disappeared. At least we got a small benefit out of that, quantities for vehicle features such as bike and wheelchair spaces.
