No mater how famous or wealthy, this is what every Black person, and especially Black women and children, can expect from the healthcare system anywhere in the US.
A New Mexico jury awarded the family of Star Trek icon Nichelle Nichols $13 million in a wrongful death lawsuit against the Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City, New Mexico.
An expert informed jury ruled the hospital provided substandard care, failed to properly diagnose a treatable heart condition, and then discharging her hours before her death in 2022.
News media are already attempting to softpedal the story. Don't let them!

For my parents generation, people born during the 1930s, mass consumption of music and other arts became the norm.
Instead of playing music being social being something that unites us, the consumption of music and art became an identity marker, a signal of status, of wealth.
And since the stories about music and the arts are written for mass consumption, they only focus on famous people, their hubris, betrayals, and their tragedies.
From cradle to grave, we have been trained as commodified people, taught the pseudo-science of Social Darwinism as self-evident human nature.
The isolation of relentless competition for status and wealth now defines many relationships, and so define arts.
For thousands of years most art was folk art, that was its purpose, its function; it was already naturally “democratized”.

Stop Believing the Lie
Liberal white America has perfected the art of emotional manipulation ― making Black people believe that votes, yard signs, and slogans equal solidarity.
They Don’t.
+ Solidarity is showing up when it’s messy.
+ Solidarity is demanding justice when it’s unpopular.
+ Solidarity is protecting Black life even when it risks white comfort.
When it comes to racism, liberal white people and conservative white people are on the same team.
One just smiles while stabbing you in the back.
The other does it with a snarl.

The only thing stranger, is that these same people profess to be Christian of deep conviction, apparently oblivious of this contradiction of values.

Scientific Racism, Eugenics, literally believing non-Europeans were a different species, has a long history and thrived with government funding for centuries. By 1921, California's eugenics program accounted for 80% of sterilizations nationwide, didn't end until 1979. The pseudo-science of eugenics permeates medical education and practice, influence law, policing, and adjudication to this day.

Because of how society is deliberately structured, everything in their lives tells them they are normal.
It is a mindset promoted by law, social custom, and billions $USD in mass commercialism that so deeply reflects whiteness that even the slightest intrusion of not white triggers a reaction in tens of millions of people within hours.
Worse, the white Oligarchy money that flowed into Blaxploitation entertainment has engendered the same ethnocentrism mirroring whites, and promotes Black ethnicity as a monoculture virtually erasing cultural diversity within the African Diaspora in the USA and beyond.

In 2001, after building my own electric scooter for riding from my home in Over-the-Rhine to my office at Fifth Third Bank Tower, providing endless amusement for the neighborhood and fellow employees, I set to work on adapting diesel-electric freight train technology to an advanced series hybrid, diesel-electric semi-tractor trailer truck with a cooperative franchise converting existing trucks.
Over the past 20+ years, I've repeatedly tried having calm, rational discussions about this concept, and every single time been absolutely excoriated by Cis white man children of the EV community.
In fact, every single project of mine based on proven, evidentiary science has been attacked in every DIY community I've ever tried joining.

Agreed. It so lacked imagination they even recycled elements from the Fifth Element (Blue Diva Plavalaguna), repeatedly within this one pseudo-film made up of cobbled together ideas intended for a series.

Section 31 was a Deep Space 9 plot device used to dramatically critique the morality of such organizations (in fiction and real life), and the price paid to justify them.
To aggrandize it with a big budget-wasted production not only shows a total misunderstanding of the source material, but ignorance of the larger Star Trek fan culture where most believe in and seek a better future for us all.

Cool. Something I've tried to open thought and discussion on, is the real-world impact of so much formerly public infrastructure, services, resources have been actually or virtually privatized it effectively means Universal Basic Income as often proposed becomes another massive, stealth transfer of wealth into the hands of the oligarch class creating the problem.
Hand-in-glove with a reformed model would be the overturning of Citizens United, severing the connection between that same Oligarch class, their political and corporate proxies, remediating the damaged to our once liberal, pluralistic democracy.
We should marry civil liberty with civic responsibility, the benefits of taxation felt on a visceral level by treating citizenship no differently than military reserve members, but instead we study and practice peace, simultaneously serving their families, friends, communities, while being free to pursue career and or lifelong education.
Oh yes, and paid time off to vote.

As someone at the intersection of several deliberately marginalized communities, my needs demand I keep trying to seek out and work to build relationships.
That is difficult when the socially acceptable default is anti-Blackness, but the Black community I would turn to for support widely regards LGBTQ identity as separate from authentic Black identity, is spoken of as being demonic in nature, and a product of colonization.
Though not exclusive to Black and Brown communities, anti-Trans rhetoric and violence is escalating, yet instead of being unity in social and economic solidarity, we are more divided by race and neoliberal class competition than ever.
The last time I attended an outing of "Gay and Lesbian" seniors, the group enthusiastically defended Trump's tariffs and spoke of people who don't conform to CisHet cultural norms as the problem, not the anti-LGBTQ Christian Nationalists now in power.

Not long after, I started trying to convince people that the CD-ROM would soon be the future of low-cost software and media distribution.
My lawyer fired me as a client because of that; angrily stating it was hubris bordering on delusion for me to believe I knew anything of the kind.

Last night I rode my bike a couple of miles to the grocery. Halfway there I noticed a young college age white girl following me. At a light I turned to look at her and she bolted, turned around and rode off.
When I came out of the grocery the same girl rode up and apparently assumed I didn't recognize her.
White people who act that crazy have almost gotten me killed before, so I smiled, spoke politely, and let her play out her little Karen drama of being so sly and superior as she politely insulted me.
This kind of thing has become routine here in the #SFBA with it mostly being women, though twice this year I've had white men follow and interrogate me, photographing my registration number, absolutely certain my bike must be stolen.
I've searched high and low across these 50 states and sadly the best I've been able to do minding my own damn business is to trigger people enough to act crazy but not enough to get murdered, at least so far.

My science fair project in 1969 was solar-powered electrolysis for desalination and hydrogen to power high-pass turbines for heavy transport aircraft. I abandoned the concept despite my success after more study of real-world engineering and economics.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.
A higher seat at the table of an unjust system, diversity among the ruling class, is not progress, it is a bribe!
Assimilating, adopting colonial definitions of success based on a permanent underclass, becoming a colonizer ourselves, is not freedom.
To succeed under an oppressive regime does not logically mean the system of oppression promoted and defended by law, custom, and commercial interests, magically no longer exists.

My cover of “Darkness Begins” theme by John Carpenter • Alan Howarth
“Prince of Darkness” (1987)

It's that time of year when darkness takes on a special meaning, and for those of a certain age and temperament, there are some fond but chilling memories of John Carpenter's apocalyptic trilogy of films.
I've used a blend of modern sampled acoustic wavetable and classic analog synthesizer, in this homage to the 1987 film “Prince of Darkness”, and the “Darkness Begins” theme

When I was very young, I saw Alfred Hitchcock's film "The Birds" at a matinée.
I had nightmares about it for years, and yet, I can't help watching it this time of year.

This is me a decade after the picture of me with the blond, burgundy, and dark blue Mohawk, playing live with one of my childhood mentors, the late James "Pigmeat" Jarrett on piano (me with the 1970 Gibson Les Paul Custom).
That was only a few years before he died and left my world smaller and colder. That is the problem, there was no culture for me to go back to and find others who shared music like him and all the others I have lost in the years since.

The picture was taken by the Enquirer Magazine from outside Arnold's Bar, the oldest continuously operating in Cincinnati, Ohio.
At the time, it was owned by another of my friends and mentors, Jim Tarbell, who owned the famous Ludlow Garage, one of the music venues I hung out in during the early 1970s.

This same year I home built an Intel 286-based PC running DR DOS with the GEM GUI and started a desktop publishing business using Ventura Publisher 3.0. To keep costs low, I used Freedom of Press, a software RIP with Postscript emulation with output to an HP Laserjet hacked with a VisualEdge card that doubled its stock 300 dpi resolution.
I let my customers assume I was just taking orders and delivering their jobs because nobody believed a young Black kid had those computer skills, and also couldn't let them know I wasn't using a Mac because they were also brainwashed into believing only Apple hardware and software was capable of the quality work I produced.
I had to sell the business after SBA/SCORE told me desktop publishing wasn't a service or a product. The two white female UC students who took it over were supported by and approved for a business loan using the business plan I wrote by the same people who had already rejected it.

If this were a pregnant white woman, there would be a firestorm of outrage coast to coast, even if she was armed and threatened the life of a police officer.
But an unarmed, pregnant Black woman only "suspected" of a petty thief, and posing no threat is put down like a dangerous animal.
This is not a few bad apples, or a police problem, it's the manufactured culture of #whiteness and the state-sponsored racial class system that cultivates and defends it.

There is a reason Google's motto is no longer: Don't Be Evil.
From science, to art, politics, to religion, there is no arena of human endeavor where incentives of wealth and power encourage people to be more honest and objective.
Of these, the disciplines that suffer most from the disincentive of capitalism, greed, and ambition are education and science at every level.
