It's good to sit and watch the bees. (I didn't get video, sorry.) #Bees #bloomscrolling

This is just to say that my friend @nprofile…eez4 is brilliant and this short story about developing laser eyes is SUPER RELATABLE. #SFF #scifi #disability #accessibility

@nprofile…5876 heh. The pandemic started and everything changed and I wasn't in academia then, so it was a poster, and not a poster in the academic sense. 😅😅😅
I can dig up images of it, though! And we did make a bilingual (Chinese/English) version of it. The posters didn't include the context of what the story was about, though -- that's just something I learned from talking with my friends who read it in the original (Classical Chinese) language.

Thank you for this paper, @nprofile…5876 !
Side tangent, but a few years ago, friends & I wrote up a timeline of Chinese scifi. The earliest was a ~400 BCE story about a wooden automaton presented to the emperor that was powered by yin/yang principles. He insisted it be dismantled in his presence to prove there wasn't a man inside. People have been fascinated by tech possibilities for a long time! (You obv know that, but you might not know of this particular story.)

Oooooh, not only is this a superb essay from @nprofile…ugpy , but it can be paired with Monroe Price's "Market for loyalty" theory -- really brings forward the notes of blood in the machine. Amazing stuff, well done, Cory!!

Juuuust in case.... if you're in Somerville or Medford, MAMAS can try to connect you with someone donating their air conditioner to be redistributed to community members in need? Just in case this is helpful in response to your complaint. 😅

I'm trying to keep up with my reading (for classes & fun) via audiobooks. Audible being an Amazon company is more and more upsetting for me b/c I’m trying to stop giving Amazon any $.
Things I like about Audible are huge selection, ability to buy books for ~$11/book, app that always works. Can folks on Fedi suggest an alternative that doesn’t involve me (a non-coder) trying to kludge my own book server or something (a thing I can’t do)? #askfedi #books #bookstodon

@nprofile…5uqu @nprofile…pu46 I've had a couple of productive conversations with professors and classmates about inaccurate responses and how important it is to me that I not boost the signal of AI slop. It's been harder w/classmates and professors who are younger, though. And it was *really* challenging when I discovered 2 classmates were feeding our group project into chatGPT for their contribution -- that convo ended in me being shut out, unfortunately. So, uh, I have maybe a 10% success rate? 😢

I think that, if you aren't trans, you might not be aware of how awful things in the US have been lately. You might be aware *that* things are not great, but not aware of the extent.
So if you're not trans, you might benefit from reading this truly horrifying assessment of the Trump admin policies toward trans people who are powerless to escape, aka prisoners: https://transitics.substack.com/p/the-trump-administration-admits-to
(If you're trans, you are probably plenty aware and this will only worsen your nightmares. You can skip this.)

There are just some numbers that I avoid having in my stuff. Like, I know what N*zis are and I avoid owning 88 of anything (even in a computer game) because of them.
Is this neurospicy or is it common? I can no longer tell how weird I am. 😅

Wowwwwwww. Public transit in Somerville is still so fucked that Google maps legit suggests taking a bus from Somernova (on Somerville Ave) out to ARLINGTON and then back out again in order to go to Taco Loco in East Somerville. O.o #SomervilleMA #SomerPoli #transit #bus #publictransit

In case this is helpful to share again:
Some friends and I put together an info sheet on worm composting. Still seems to me to be the best way to compost items that the worms will take (esp paper). It doesn't require transportation elsewhere, and the nutrients go back into the garden when the worms are done processing items.

Also, if someone reading this happens to live near me, I'm happy to set you up with a kit.

I've been taking pics of seedlings in our mutual aid garden and labeling them in our signal chat so that folks know what we might want to keep versus what's okay to weed out. Thought it might also make a short but useful thread.
First up, marigolds. I can never tell whether a marigold seedling is one of the ginormous ones or petite, but it's always identifiable as some kind of marigold once it's got its first true leaves (as opposed to cotyledon leaves).

I'm so tired of reading something my government has done and immediately bursting into tears because of how bad and wrong and evil it is. 😭 I don't want to grow callous, but these exhausting crying bursts are also exhausting.

Woah. Woah.
Japan investigated the murder of Shinzo Abe and discovered that the killer was completely correct in accusing Abe of ruining his family's fortunes and his life?? So now Japan is dismantling the church and ordering restitution to families impacted? WOAH! #Japan #politics #judiciary

@nprofile…cg79 wowwwww. I wonder what the public justification is for "let's have a smaller tariff against China than against our neighboring allies."
I don't wonder enough to dig into it because it sounds like madness, to be clear, but I do idly wonder. :P
