Here's my favourite snap of the two fantails from today
(The black morph seems to have a tasty snack in is beak, while the other one has a fluffy bum!)

I'm on Spark Prepaid, and somehow have accrued loads of rollover stuff too, and then get bazillions of text messages from them telling me such and such is:
1) Going to renew
2) Has been renewed
3) Something or rather is expiring
4) Doubleups for 1 + 2 at different intervals
Meh! As long as it all keeps working and I don't get double charged a month...

Can someone tell me what the negative consequences could be from enshrining in law words to the following effect:
"Companies are required to ensure staff (employee and/or contract) and customer wellbeing over shareholder interests (including but not limited to profit/dividend sharing)"

Had a very nice (if windy) walk around the Botanic Gardens today!
It's probably the first time I've headed in lugging bird lens too (for obvious reasons today). My setup for such treks is much too awkward right now though!
Off the back of this outing:
* Unfortunately, I didn't see or manage to take any snaps of the Very Important Bird (Falcon). Who knows... maybe it was standing right above me in a few places, and I didn't see it! (More likely, it was sleeping / hanging out high up in some random corner)
* I also still haven't had any sightings of any of those quail that people keep talking about! (Heck, I even saw that a pair of influencers filming a travel vlog managed to spot them! Jeez...)
* Annoyingly, didn't capture any of the silveryes I heard, and/or didn't get a good clear shot of any of the 5-6 bellbirds overhead at various points!
* What I *did* get:
- 1x goldfinch
- Loads of sparrows
- A few black scaup
- Blackbird throwing bark / mulch
- 1x blurry bellbird butt
- 1-3 fantails (one at a time)
- 1 welcome swallow (at close range, nice shots, singing away)
- 1 chaffinch
- Loads of ducks -> Paradise, Normal, and Mallard.
- Ducklings! (Wow, they have a "boost" mode where they can "sprint" a meter in under a second!!!)
- A few more Canadian geese
* I did also finally find the Ruru Sculpture, along with an interesting "wood-imitation, stone-scultpure" forming a massive vertical frame (which nicely framed up the Ruru... IDK how long that's been there for, but it's the first time in my life I've ever seen it)
These are off the side of the Avon to your left, when entering from the Riccarton Ave carpark (crossing the riven, then turning right onto the path along the river parallel to the where the carpark is) - they are the exit just before the shortcut to the winter-pond gardens.

A few weeks / months ago, I saw a swan in the Avon near the Oxford Terrace / Strip area. Went down to try to get clearer snaps of it, wondering why some lady kept poking it with a stick and kicking it away or whatever
Turns out a cluster of eels was being fed by a bunch of kids, and she was err... "teaching" them to respect them or something, while keeping that stick to presumably separate the kids and eels should anything go wrong I guess
First time I had ever seen them so close to the water surface, fins out, just rippling away there on the surface!

Could you err... offload some of this "buraracracy navigation work" to the kid as an enrichment activity, so that his tablet time is at least a bit more productive?
Or is that the type of stuff he'd just start railing against as something you're "forcing" him to do?

Woah... it seems the temperature has suddenly dropped steeply outside! Was 19C when I last checked, and now reporting 12C 😱
EDIT: Now down to 10C a few minutes later! 🥶

2026-07-11 21:43:10 UTC

The birds are loudly chittering and chattering! Must be from their joy that the sun is out and temperatures slowly warming up again
(When I woke up on the middle of the night, it was -3 outside, and -1.4 inside the glasshouse! 🥶)

Whenever I hear that jingle, I wonder why they are advertising some org called:
"C. P. S."
What else has an acronym like that while maybe sounding like they could do with a cheery jingle?
1) Child Protection Services,
or at a stretch:
2) C??? Pharmacy Service
(Or an even longer wildcard, some reboot of the old Long John Silver / LJS fish and chip chain, that my intermediate school deputy principal used to be a hands on franchisee of in our nearby mall... for several years before I then ran into him at school!!!)
Which IIRC strangely somewhat go with the 2nd line (???):

What? Since when did the Chc Libraries start charging people to loan out the CD's and DVD's?
They certainly didn't back in the day when that was the main way for me to get hold of recordings of the pieces I was working on... back during high school, which is admittedly over 20 years ago now 😜
In any case, it's good to see that these charges have been dropped now!

Is getting a second standard one, then just cutting it into two an option perhaps?
* Yes, it does sound barbaric to do that, but would somewhat solve a "too big" problem... Plus, you'd then have a spare for whenever the main one is getting washed, assuming both survive the cutting and edge locking / rsealing
* Hopefully also your kid doesn't then decide that only the original "too large" one is still the only righteous solution

I'll add one more "don't do" to your list:
Responding to, or giving the time of day to anyone who puts hand-written paper notes on your car. Especially when they've added *multiple* notes.
Been there, done that 😬
Though it would be OK in that instance as it was the work carpark, and most people working there are generally really decent people. I forgot however, that randoms can and do have access to the carpark too! Lesson learned!

PSA: Firefox users with SSD's (i.e. most FF users these days I'd imagine) may want to check on the "sessionstore.interval" setting - apparently it currently triggers a whole lot of IO every 15 seconds!!!
https://www.partitionwizard.com/partitionmanager/firefox-is-eating-your-ssd.html
I found this discussion as I've recently been noticing my computer having quite a lot of periodic disk IO activity while idling, and got curious. (Was thinking it was the VM's instead, but no... it was Firefox. What it was doing?! No idea! But whatever it is, it cannot be good IMO!)

Broccoli, pak choy, and spring onion = Easy peasy. Do with those what you usually will, i.e.:
* Spring Onion - Use as garnish on dishes (e.g. esp steamed fish / tofu, with soy sauce + maybe with some ginger), OR mix in with grated potato + beaten egg + fry to make small fritters
* Broccoli - Steam + serve with oyster sauce / garlic salt, by itself or mixed with steamed carrots / cauliflower.
OR, stir fry with beef strips (marinated with soy sauce) + garlic... or chicken...
* Pak Choy - Serve alongside other stuff
All the rest:
I have no words. I never have any interest in those, and have nothing to use them for.

Some vague ideas (probably
* 1) Get him used to just being in the space when it is powered off + won't be going anywhere
* 2) Then to the sounds + lights of the car, again, not moving, doors open and able to leave at any time
* 3) One of those VR things

AFAIK, the bigger thing you may want to check I'd think is how much more life the battery has in it.
The last thing you want is to get it as a cheap car, but then battery dies in a year or two, then requires the same or more to replace the battery to make it usable again

Oh dear... that does sound like a handful to have to manage all by yourself at once 😥
You probably know this, but in cases like this, my typical approach is divide an conquer:
1) Rank them by "when does it absolutely have to be done by". Hopefully the answer is not "all of them by tomorrow"
2) For each day's tasks, rank them by urgency + importance. I.e. "Must" vs "Should" vs "Could"
3) Where possible, tackle just the "must" ones first, and let the "should" slip if necessary
Rinse and repeat.

Yay, just got out of today's meetings marathon to find that Mastodon NZ is back up! Well done to everyone involved in getting the migration done!
It had been a bit of an eventful morning here too:
* The neighbour got in a landscaping contractor in to chop down their Mimosa Tree this morning... 😥
* Yes it had been getting a bit big, and today's cleanup got rid of the big gnarly old man's beard beside it 😊
* BUT, now my silvereyes have one less tree to gather on now! It was one of the few trees left they could sit and play on nearby, making it even less likely they come here now 😥
* Even worse: That lovely flowering cactus I posted about a few months ago is all gone now! (Had hoped to maybe catch them before they dumped them when I headed out, but they had already disposed of all the green waste by then!) Such a shame! 😭

It can drop the temperature by about 2 degrees over 3 hours. With the ice blocks in.
Did that for most of last summer, but when sitting in a north facing room packed with hot-running electric equipment, that was still hellish (I.e. needed 10-20 minute "heat breaks").
But yeah, if "the committee" do not approve my heatpump for this unit (Note: neighbour next door is on that, and will be the most affected one), this place is unusable over summer 😬

Ugh! I hate "PU" fake leather! 🤬
The bloody stuff always ends up flaking after a few years, then it completely goes and gets everywhere!
Turns out the school doll that mum got from her HS classmates also used that crap on its fake leather shoes, and it is now doing its classic flaking act, without having been subject to the horrors of being in contact with me (aka office chairs or headphones)

We have... a sighting! 😂
Quick snap off back of camera. Proper pics later

Was disappointed to not see any hint of any back in January (?) this year.
IIRC, someone mentioned the council may have had someone remove them. Hopefully they've back though
(I certainly don't care if they're technically an "introduced weed")

What my bottlebrush currently outside my home office window looks like 😍
Well... what would *usually* be my home office window at this time of the year, but not this year as it's still an active building site, which is also keeping the silvereyes away... totally sucks as the bush is looking the best it's been for over a decade! 😭
(Oh, and the smaller red one I got from Oderings too a few years ago is also in bloom right beside this)

WTF?! 😧
So it turns out pretty much all the new buildings that went up around the time I attended Burnside High are pretty much all quake prone (*according to the new standard), with 2 of those blocks in the process of being demolished! 🤯
Then again, what is the demolition of 2-3 blocks, when they've completely razed + rebuilt my Primary + Intermediate as well... 🙄

Happens all the time. It's just that often you only get it as accents / hints on the edges of fluffy clouds...

Search for "Bunnings platform trolley"
Was originally mainly planning on using it to move / hold my desktop tower (with all the cables still plugged in)... but it seemed easier than trying to lug the various cabinets around.
(And yes, for that it is good. There is the small matter of still having to get the things airborne enough to get on the trolley, hence back + legs are screaming in exhaustion again ATM 😅)

2024-11-06 07:38:14 UTC

Glad I've mostly been too busy today to spend much time looking at social media.
Have spent last few hours frantically decamping but heavy furniture out of my room. The 4 wheeled trolley cart was an AWESOME purchase decision! Just need a better way of getting things up on to it to have less lifting next time...
Totally buggered now 😅

Apparently it's generally "grass pollen" - from all the references I've seen just now
(Metservice and so forth seem to refer to a pollen count source that I can't seem to dig up today)

2024-11-05 06:09:29 UTC

WTF was that?! Just got home from a short outing to find 3-5 silvereyes flitting between the butchered tree and the now exposed bottlebrush!
Actively exploring, jumping around, and loving it it seems 🤯

Street Art in New Brighton today
Overall, while the area is still really run down and in a sad state, but the quality + number of new street art, and an open-air community music-lesson all gave off a promising vibe that was less depressing than my on last few visits

Bugger... there's a guy on other side of our office space who reportedly is "coming off the tail end" of some illness he got from his kid (who apparently projectile vomited in bed) 😬

2024-10-30 00:52:51 UTC

I'm not sure if my hearing has gotten way worse, my phone's ear-speaker is dying, or people have terrible mics on their phones.
But over the past few weeks, I've been having a really hard time trying to hear what people are saying when they call me 😬
Something says it's a mix of all 3 but, probably mostly due to the phone's ear-speaker getting clogged up with gunk, making it not work as well.

Does look very wisteria like, esp since I've seen some in flower now
Surprisingly, my aunt reacted in horror to the mention of them - apparently they may be as hard to get rid of as they grape vines / creepers that we spent YEARS trying to get rid of (i.e. vast underground root networks, fast growth, destructive + persistent suckers)

Almost ended up accidentally adopting a cat tonight 😹
"Char Siu" cat was waiting at the gate for us just now it seems. Came up for chin rubs, then promptly dashed in for tour of our garden before going flopsy on the lawn (I.e. loaf with flat + straight tail, outstretched (?) paws)
Didn't budge while we left the gate open
By the time we got to the door, it had followed us there!
If I had been any clumsier/ slower getting in the house, we'd now have a new furry resident I suspect! 😹

Turned back around to the sight of this! Really tall red beams, and a whole cloud of yellow green color below 🤯
EDIT: Was cued in to it by like a really bright white stripe that went from horizon straight up. Thought it might be "Steve" like, but no, it was a whole cloud of red!
