Ah, Stewart Lee:
“The real worry for Farage will be if those discrediting stories [about Binface] don’t appear. Because then it will mean that his paymasters have decided, not unreasonably, that he’s a lame duck who has backed himself into a corner, discrediting their project as a whole, by putting himself in a position, entirely of his own making, where, in the words of Rachel Reeves, he has to spend his summer arguing with a bin.”

“I regret very, very deeply indeed carrying on that association with him for far longer than I should have done.”
But that’s the whole point, sunshine. You perhaps couldn’t help having been introduced to him, but you didn’t have to turn him into your “best pal”. And do best pals really not have an inkling as to what each other are up to?

Theodore Roosevelt’s daughter, Alice, once said of her father that “he wants to be the bride at every wedding, the corpse at every funeral, and the baby at every christening.” But the line fits Trump even better. As long as there is attention to be had, you can bet he’ll find a way to make himself the center of it and make sport of self-aggrandizement, regardless of who, or what, he may trample over on his march.

I’ve spent a significant part of my professional life in the satellite industry, and in recent years I’ve been increasingly troubled by the explosion in development and deployment of large constellations of small satellites in low earth orbit (LEO). This excellent (long read) article sets out all the reasons why, especially the effects on launch capacity, frequency spectrum regulation, and avoidance of physical and electronic interference.

“Internal messages seen by The Post suggest that US embassies and the State Department are encouraging countries to make way for US satellite internet services like Starlink. The messages don’t promise lower tariffs in exchange for adopting Starlink, but ‘they do indicate that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has increasingly instructed officials to push for regulatory approvals for Musk’s satellite firm.’”

Apparently, Rachel Reeves is seeking a “deeper, more mature relationship” between Britain and the EU.
But what could be shallower and less mature than sticking doggedly to the red lines of no customs union, no single market, and no freedom of movement - not even a youth mobility scheme, which would be to the clear advantage of all parties?

There's been a lot of talk in recent times of politicians wrapping themselves in the Union Flag, but Tory thicko Victoria Atkins really has taken it to the limit.

“There is no time to waste: achieving sufficient alignment to have a meaningful impact on GDP could take years. Starmer must start both negotiations with the EU and an honest conversation with voters about what’s required now.”
How often must it be said, before Starmer gets it? We need the customs union and single market. Yesterday.

And in spite of everything pointed out by the OBR and a Treasury minister FFS, a government spokesperson still says “This government will ... make Brexit work for the British people” (an impossible task), and “there will be no return to the single market, customs union or freedom of movement.”
I despair.
Starmer needs a good slap. Might bring him to his senses.

This account of the birth of the Nebiolo Forma typeface makes me wonder that after the ‘design by committee’ approach, the Italian foundry managed to turn out something as good as it was.
