"Last week, New York City announced a groundbreaking $131.5 million settlement with DoorDash. The largest such resolution in city history, the case involved over 260,000 workers who were paid late and in some cases not paid at all.
It also raises the question: If these underpayments happened in New York City, where DoorDash knew it was under scrutiny, what’s happening to gig workers everywhere else when no one is watching?"

Oh yay.
The student "athletes" are back a week earlier than the rest of this college students. The athletic fields are just below our apartment building.
So now I get to listen to adolescent male primates grunting and howling. And of course, ruining a perfectly peaceful day with whatever it is they call music in order to get their already out of control hormones revved up.
These are 95% over-privileged white boys, the privilege leaks out and leaves a greasy mess everywhere they go. Recently, I've noticed they've tried to appropriate Maori Haka. Shall I say, it does not go over well. It also makes me want to run down the hill and shoot every single one of them who participate. There are reasons I don't have weapons.
It's funny how young women who are talented athletes, absolutely do not need to grunt, howl, or play obscene offensive music that generally entail some kind of violence and rape.
Yes, I'm a bit grumpy about it all. Rant over.

July 10, 1983 was a Sunday. My husband, Stephen, got up early to meet friends for a day of scuba diving and left the Sunday comics on the side of the bed for me.
I had a lazy morning and then drove into Cambridge to do a few hours of work on a software project I was managing. I was listening to a Irish radio show that played music and storytellers and I was weepy. Irish storytellers are so good.
I was planning to have dinner with friends nearby and got a phone call from them to let me know that one of our coworkers had been in a car accident driving from Boston down to Yale and was in a coma. So I left work early and headed over to their apartment to wait for news.
The phone rang around 5:30 and Peter went into the back room to answer. When he came back out he was pale and Susan and I both asked, is it Mia?
No, he said it's Stephen. Where is he, I asked, I'll go get him. No, he said you don't understand, there was an accident and Stephen died while scuba diving.
It felt like time stopped for me and I was offered a choice - I could lose it or I could deal with it. I chose to deal with it and time started again. I didn't realize that it was not a one-time but a lifelong choice.
July 12, 1983 was his funeral, four months after our wedding day.
You just never know what's around the corner, so don't hesitate to love.

Is "I regret that" an apology?
Actually a good article on how views of #autism are shifting.
"In fact, he said, his own research showed that autistic people tend to differ in cognitive empathy (interpreting facial expressions and language) but not affective empathy (the internal response to others’ feelings). “Once they know that someone is upset, it upsets them and they want to do something about it,” he said. “There’s a kind of myth that autistic people lack empathy.”

Sadie and I just had a very strange experience on our evening walk. We live in a ruralish smallish town with lots of wooded areas, ponds, and rivers.
There was a deer on the other side of a hedge that we walk along in the evening. We often see deer and we give each other plenty of space. Sadie rarely barks at them anymore.
It started following us, walking along just like we were walking along, in the same direction. Then when we got to the end of the hedge it came around and stood about 5 feet away from us, really close.
It stared at us. We stared at it. It took a few steps closer and I backed me and Sadie up a few steps. Sadie barked a little but it didn't seem bothered at all.
Then it started to stamp its a little front hoofs which can mean it might attack. So we went across the street to the other side and it started to follow us across the street until a car came along.
But it didn't go away. The driver rolled down his window and said do you want me to chase it away towards the woods with the car? I said no thank you we'll just go in a different direction. So we went off a different way and the deer did not follow.
It was very very strange. It looked like it was curious about Sadie. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sent to my senators this morning:
It is past time for the senate democrats to retire Schumer from his post as leader. He is at best, ineffective and at worst, complicit. It has been true for years. I would be delighted to see Elizabeth Warren as leader in the senate. She has a strong moral stance and a passion that Schumer lacks, entirely. His latest bow to Trump regarding ICE funding is absolutely unacceptable. Schumer must - finally! - go. I hope you will lead this effort.

The ICE List Wiki is a public, verifiable record of immigration enforcement activity in the United States.
It documents incidents, agencies, individuals, facilities, vehicles, and legal authorities involved in enforcement operations. Entries are structured, sourced, and timestamped to support verification, cross-referencing, and long-term analysis.

Brilliant to quote Thucydides at the beginning of his speech since most of the US administration won't have a clue and their ignorance will humiliate them.
"...Let me be direct. We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition.
Over the past two decades, a series of crises in finance, health, energy and geopolitics have laid bare the risks of extreme global integration. But more recently, great powers have begun using economic integration as weapons, tariffs as leverage, financial infrastructure as coercion, supply chains as vulnerabilities to be exploited..."

@nprofile…x9tq The situation is indeed very grave however a civil war, an organized civil war, is unlikely.
* We are spread out both geographically and in terms of common, binding values.
* We are heavily sedated both medically and recreationally.
* Finally, the people who are out on the streets are - for the most part - dedicated to some form of the principles of non-violence. We are not committed to, nor do we take pleasure in, vicious acts of violence and control - unlike ICE and those who hold and loose their leashes.
Of course, I don't have a crystal ball 🔮 to see the future and how this will ultimately play out. I have my hopes for a positive outcome but in the meantime there's a lot of suffering.

"When someone works for less pay than she can live on—when, for example, she goes hungry so that you can eat more cheaply and conveniently—then she has made a great sacrifice for you, she has made you a gift of some part of her abilities, her health, and her life.
The “working poor,” as they are approvingly termed, are in fact the major philanthropists of our society. They neglect their own children so that the children of others will be cared for; they live in substandard housing so that other homes will be shiny and perfect; they endure privation so that inflation will be low and stock prices high. To be a member of the working poor is to be an anonymous donor, a nameless benefactor, to everyone else."

A powerful piece from author Elizabeth Bear:
"... You don’t have to be miserable or suffer to create art; but you do have to be honest, and honesty is terrifying. And sometimes to make magic you need to go it alone and be who you are meant to be, and let the magic lead.
So here we are: the solstice. The rebirth.
The time when we decide who we are and who we are going to be for the next cycle. It’s winter here; it may be summer where you are. But something is shifting. And we have work to do and truths to tell, no matter how much it aches ..."

Perseverance by Margaret J. Wheatley
I'm a little low on spoons today, so I'll give you a link to a good write up about the book ...
... and a quote from Margaret.
"... Throughout human existence, there have always been people willing to step forward to struggle valiantly in the hope that they might reverse the downward course of events. Some succeeded, some did not. As we face our own time, it’s good to remember that we’re only the most recent humans who have struggled to change things ... This is how the world always changes. Everyday people not waiting for someone else to fix things or come to their rescue, but simply stepping forward, working together, figuring out how to make things better. Now it’s our turn."

@nprofile…kvnh I think there's a real difference between dreaming of doing work that's fulfilling to our individual nature and doing work on behalf of the community, whether it's a community of one (take out the trash) or community of many (clean the public toilets).
English is limited in how we describe the things that we do: labor, work, job. It's all been co-opted by a capitalist attitude towards how we choose to "spend" our time.
If we really wanna create an entirely different kind of culture/society we also need to reclaim our words.

@nprofile…xzjz I am so sorry, I know how frightening that can be. I'm settled in Massachusetts for the time being and I have to say that his attitude is not that uncommon here. Sadie and I are often rushed or attacked by other dogs. I've lived all over the country and this is the only place it's happened.

@nprofile…xzjz my friend had a nice small herd of ducks and even though they had a nice safe barn, the fox and coyotes still found a way. No more raising ducks for them.

We had rain and slush and ice and snow falling from the sky yesterday. I took this photo on our final walk last night.

The only downside to the #snow for me, right now, is that most of it will happen overnight in the dark where I can’t enjoy it as it falls from the heavy clouds.

I will be honest. As a member of the first generation of people with Jewish heritage born after the Holocaust, I’ve been expecting something like what’s happening in the US and around the world. Call it fascism, call it authoritarianism, call it nazism, call it white supremacy, call it what you will. We see it and we recognize it.
Even as a young child I saw those black and white movie reels of the emaciated children, women, and men as they were physically freed from the concentration camps - but never freed in mind or spirit. I saw images of the trophies collected by the people of Germany and Austria and Poland - bones, clothing made from the skin of the murdered, images of bulldozers pushing aside the mounds of the murdered.
As I grew older, I learned that the Jews were not the only people oppressed with torture and genocide. And even older now I see the Jews engaged in oppression and genocide of others - and I am horrified by the evil that humans are willing to engage in and sometimes even delight in.
I expected evil. I expected competent evil. I expected banal evil. I did not expect buffoons.
And yet here we are, about to go under the thumb of the most horrifying buffoons - beyond imagination.
I know it seems trite - but I am so offended that democracy is being taken down by a bunch of greedy, immature, clowns.
I don’t really know where to go with this. I’m horrified every single day as I observe the political realm, not just in the US but around the world. I don’t know what to tell you other than find the people with whom you share love and hold them close. Do what you can to resist in the ways that are most suitable for you.
A quote from Martha Wells: “it made her wonder how many of histories favorite heroes were just incompetent suicides”
We don’t have to be heroes. Stay alive as long as you can to enjoy the beauty that life will always offer you if you are willing to see it, even in the worst of times.

I've been following the posts on #sewing for a while now and am thinking more seriously about starting myself - what would folks recommend for a beginner who hasn't sewn since high school home ec in the 1970s? I'm thinking simple - skirts, summer tunics, easy repairs.

@nprofile…fa5p Every time you choose to use the acronym doge, you are giving free advertising to musk’s crypto and you are legitimizing this travesty.
As Sherilynn Ifill says in her newsletter today: “Musk and Ramaswamy are leading at best a “project on government accountability.” … It is not a “Department” which is a legal term for federal agencies.“

The wonderful woman who helps me with housework has an autistic teenage daughter. This girl is trying so hard to navigate a very confusing world. The mom is supportive while the public school is actively not supportive.
I know I feel so supported by the adult community on here - does anyone know of safe online autistic communities for teens?

@nprofile…znff Once upon a time there was a little puppy named Sadie. She was a rumbly tumbly puppy. She lived in the desert with her rumbly tumbly sisters and her rumbly tumbly brothers. Every day they would play their rumbly tumbly games and every night they would snuggle up with their rumbly tumbly mama.
One day, rumbly tumbly Sadie wandered far far away from her rumbly tumbly sisters and brothers. She became lost and very sad. She followed many people here and there but nobody paid any attention until one day, a human scooped her up and took her home.
Sadie never saw her rumbly tumbly sisters or brothers again but she had lots of love and lots of friends and is now a happy, grown-up puppy.
(sometimes, when #SunshineSadie has a difficult time falling asleep at night I tell her this story and sing her a lullaby)

#SunshineSadie was so uncomfortable that I took her to the vet. 2 1/2 hours and $215 plus antibiotics and painkillers and 10 days of quarantine. And my mom will wake up in the hospital tomorrow morning for her 87th birthday. I hope this is not a preview of 2025.

Another dog attack on Sadie at the park. The other dog was clamped onto her ear and Sadie was screaming and the dog’s owner was kicking Sadie. I really hate people sometimes.

I have been involved with the tech industry since the early 1980s - first as an employee and always as a user. It was fun and interesting and opened so many doors to me. Now, I avoid it as much as I can and choose carefully - weeding my tech garden aggressively.
“…The average person’s experience with technology is one so aggressive and violative that I believe it leaves billions of people with a consistent low-grade trauma. We seem, as a society, capable of understanding that social media can hurt us, unsettle us, or make us feel crazed and angry, but I think it’s time to accept that the rest of the tech ecosystem undermines our wellbeing in an equally-insidious way. And most people don’t know it’s happening, because everybody has accepted deeply shitty conditions for the last ten years…”

Wise words from #KellyHayes
“… People are furious and heartbroken, and they know they have been wronged.
“Some are working themselves to death, laboring through illness or amid the deterioration of their joints or spinal discs, because they can’t afford to stop.
“Some pay insurance rates they can barely afford and still receive astronomical medical bills.
“Many have watched their loved ones suffer and die needlessly or while in unnecessary pain.
“Still more are constantly struggling to get the basic tests and medications they need to maintain their health.
“They know that people like themselves are dying when they could be saved. If they are not suffering today, they know that they could be tomorrow–that they could be struck by chronic pain or a chronic illness that would render them surplus and disposable in a billionaire’s world.
“The working class is marked for violence, as corporate policies and algorithms decide if our bodies are worthy of maintenance–or if we should simply be left to die …”

@nprofile…8ewh Yes, I’ve read all of starhawk’s books - I don’t think I’ve read the fifth sacred thing and at least a decade. It’s probably considered one of the very first solarpunk books, even before solarpunk was a titled thing.
The sequel, city of refuge, is also really worth reading to complete the storyline. I don’t think I’m much enjoyed the prequel, walking to Mercury, at least it didn’t stick in my mind enough to have any memory of it.
Magic plus science is very much based on the authors belief systems and practice.
I’ve been thinking about reading them again, thanks for the nudge.
