Honestly, you know what? The appearance of this connector isn't what makes me cringe. It is the thought of the teachers at my old job somehow managing to bend like 5 of the VGA pins in the connector because they'd have it upside down and just jam it into the slot, thinking it'd magically align. I cannot imagine that this cable would last more than 5 seconds in their hands

hey postgres people, do you know of any way i can look through WAL to make sure everything's okay? I am paranoid after watching an instance implode due to corrupted WAL that kept growing and infecting pg_dump backups

2026-07-25 20:07:02 UTC

In light of one of our users breaking the instance I'll do a story time.
I've broken it a couple of times. Way back in the day Amelia would look at instance logs via docker attach. I remember one time just blindly ctrl-c'ing it and exploding the entire instance. Once there was a problem with the amd64 runners for the current (at that time) Sharkey release. I found that it worked fine for arm64, and I thought "Oh, we have some pretty beefy server CPUs. What if I just ran it through an arm emulator? Nobody would notice, right?". The instance exploded to 100% CPU and memory usage; I was yelled at by the other administrators of the instance & our server provider.
In both cases, I felt a pit in my stomach, but now looking back, they were fairly minor disruptions. I doubt anyone actually remembers the instance being down for ~5-10 minutes during those two events.

"safe" and "secure" ai (think llms) is the equivalent of clean coal imo. In order to actually facilitate that, you need to do a bunch of work that ends up being far more of a burden than just doing the original work yourself. Just like how 100% "clean coal" would end up consuming the same, if not more energy than you'd ever get out of the coal itself.
