@nprofile…saev it's an incredible book that I happened across in high school while looking for more Martin Gardner type stuff. Definitely part of what fueled a desire to be a math major at uni.
I immediately wanted to put a computer to work extending some of the research described therein; instead I settled for buying and building a couple of the simpler burrs, but 30 years on they're still prized possessions.
(The author is still with us at 95! That's a lovely thing to know.)

@nprofile…ulpn all that said— of course I have a way to export my data out of LB for later import somewhere else if the time comes.
Sure would be nice if the Fediverse was capable of a data export to reinstantiate an account on a another server— what's your exit strategy there?

2025-03-07 01:11:52 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ulpn I like my chances of Letterboxd specifically continuing to keep its users happy across acquisitions and changes in the marketplace; Flickr is a pretty reasonable example that I look to.
There's absolutely no point in me running my own site on my own domain and expecting to reap the same benefits as a Letterboxd account.
NeoDB (and, sigh, Mastodon) have already let me down; the fediverse is not delivering on the hype in a substantial way and I don't see a path forward for it.

2025-03-06 21:34:03 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ulpn I've been supporting Letterboxd and the Fediverse for about the same period of time and I have to say I'm a LOT more confident in LB sticking around than almost any Mastodon server, and I know exactly how to get all my data back out of it.
What danger do you see LB being in, specifically?

@nprofile…3j2d yeah, ok. I prefer requiring folks to *use* the access, not just log in to keep the account unlocked, but that's also beside the point.
It feels like there's a better way to incentivize keeping the account active, but we live in a world where certain people are convinced that mindless auto-logout and auto-lock policies are acceptable.
My favorite: aa.com will end your flight search session after 15 minutes. I don't think I've ever taken less than 15 days to find the flight I want.

2025-02-02 03:07:23 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…3j2d calendar alerting defaults are nonsense.
unless I am very careful, the night before a big trip when I am trying to get sleep so I can be on time for my flight I'm invariably woken by an urgent alert at 5 minutes before midnight reminding me that tomorrow is a public or company holiday or whatever.

@nprofile…uv7p let's be real, it's also pretty out there to carve even dead revered leaders' faces into a mountainside.
Interestingly, apparently Rep Matt Salmon once proposed adding Reagan to Rushmore back in 1999; some news reports say it got debated in the Congress but I haven't found a record of that yet.

@nprofile…6k5u i think this is the roguelike experience — it's why I quit Dead Cells after a few days. I've talked tactics with a coworker who's very nearly completely finished the game, so while there's a healthy amount of luck involved there *are* tactics and strategies to make winning possible.

@nprofile…myje I was similarly engaged by this and found that even sums of cubes that don't start at 1 don't seem to be able to evaluate to 2026, eg.
I made a list of numbers that are a large sum of cubes minus a smaller one with a generous limit on the max cube; for the first time I think I may have stumbled on a sequence not in oeis!

@nprofile…6m2n @nprofile…4mn6 I refuse to use noclobber on principle --- one day I'll forget to set it and clobber something important --- but I *do* use >, >> and >| with specificity when I want to create, append or replace the file I'm directing to.
So far that's worked well for about 20 years. I don't think I'd have been lucky setting noclobber each time I redirect output.

@nprofile…3j2d I hate being a reply guy, but something else relevant to your larger point occurred to me: Australia got rid of its 1c and 2c coinage in the early 90s with, honestly, absolutely minimal fuss.
It's sad to not see a frill-necked lizard or a feathertail glider in my change anymore, but that's about it. Compare and contrast with any attempt to ditch the penny, or switch from dollar bills to Susan B Anthony coins.

@nprofile…3j2d I mean, that's the tails side of the coin, they make new versions regularly but the heads side basically never changes until the monarch does, except to the more true to life (though if were Elizabeth I'd have prevailed on the Aussie mint to keep the original profile) just like US money.
Basically this is no different than US state quarters except more whimsical.
