Also? Made it to my local advance poll yesterday afternoon. It was pretty busy - the line went just out the door - but the patient poll workers had people in and out in under half an hour. The process has more steps than a line dance. A poll worker must prepare each of your 10 individual colour coded ballots while you watch, carefully folding and initialing each one. Then you have to go to a booth, unfold ten tiny ballots, and mark each one, and then fold it up again. Then you have to slip each coloured ballot into the right colour coded ballot box - a bit tricky since the peach ballot and the pink ballot look a lot alike, as do the white ballot and the greyish ballot.
And when it’s all done? Each ballot must be counted by hand - because while governments and corporations are using AI for everything, the AB govt suddenly doesn’t trust computers to count binary yes/no ballots - something computers do exceptionally well!

Tuesday evening, I appeared on CTV’s political talk show, Alberta Prime Time, to discuss some of the “reasoning” - if it can be called that - behind Alberta’s referendum(s). Here’s that conversation. https://youtu.be/tu96ZynJE0c?si=WHD6FlylY0fJd-8p #ableg #abpoli #Alberta #notothenine #cdnpoli

Alberta doesn’t have an immigration crisis - but it surely faces an economic crisis, if the government succeeds in chasing immigrants and investors away with its racist referendum questions. In the Senate last night, I rose to denounce the scapegoating of migrants, to tell some hard truths, and to laud the economic and social value of newcomers to Alberta, especially for rural renewal. I hope you will share and boost my remarks so that more people can hear them before they vote. https://youtu.be/to7o-4rwHKQ?si=wPe22Rknr7kgu5n4 #cdnpoli #ableg #abpoli #Alberta #Canada #SenateofCanada #immigration

I am really disturbed at the way the Senate is being “pressured” to pass complex, important and deeply flawed legislation without proper study and debate. Bill C-16 is just the latest example. Under the cover of protecting victims, the government is rolling back important constitutional protections. Few people have noticed. The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that access to MAID, medical assistance in dying, is a constitutional right. Federal law has enshrined that right. Yet here in Alberta, Danielle Smitj has passed legislation that effectively annuls that right, and with very little public attention or push back. It’s outrageous. But think about that. A measly 40 million Canadians buy more American exports than do a billion people in China or India. Trump keeps shrieking that Canadians don’t buy as many American goods as Americans buy Canadian goods. That’s true. That’s because your population is ten times larger than ours. You buy more stuff, because you have 400 million people and we have 40 million. We actually buy MORE American goods than any other country in the world! More than China. More than Japan. More than Mexico. Or at least, we did. Our own buying habits are shifting now.

Now, if you hate free market competition and capitalism, then by all means, block or impede Canadian goods from entering US markets. Your prices will go up, and the quality and variety of goods you can buy will go down. No, Canadians will not pay the tariffs. Your importers will. And they will, naturally and reasonably, pass those higher prices onto American consumers. Tariffs aren’t a toll Canadian producers pay. They are a tax YOU pay. A regressive tax at that. #Trump #tariffs #Canada

For all my American followers - let me unpack Trump’s subsidy lie. No, the US government is not paying subsidies to Canada. Instead, private American companies are choosing to buy Canadian products. Please stop. This is not a joke to us. And your “cute” imperialist conceit that you should conquer us just to solve your own internal crisis is deeply insulting. Signed, a really truly Canadian senator struggling hard not to use unparliamentary language.

Ontario exports the most, but Quebec, Manitoba, British Columbia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador also supply American markets. We have a continentally integrated electrical grid - which makes tremendous sense if you are long term allies with free trade and integrated economies and supply chains. If. #Canada

Trump’s “announcement” this morning that he intends to double tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50%, shut down Canada’s auto industry and declare a state of emergency in northern states facing higher Canadian electricity prices, is chilling. I’m old enough to remember when in Edmonton we ate a whole lot of raisins and prunes and canned pears in the winter. So yes, we take our options for granted. But it’s pretty nice to be able to buy rambutans from Thailand in February!

Trying to find groceries made or grown in Canada can be an adventure. And trying to find non-American “warm weather” produce can be an even bigger challenge. If you can buy at a farmers market or direct from a farmer, you obviously know the provenance of your food. But I’ve also had fun - and success - visiting stores like T&T and HMart, as well as Edmonton independents like Spinelli’s Italian Centre, Lucky 97 and 99 Supermarket. #tariffs #yeg #Edmonton #yegfood #elbowsupcanada

I have always been a bit suspicious of flag waving and performative displays of patriotism. I don’t think I’ve ever celebrated Flag Day before. And the way far right Covid conspiracy-mongers hijacked our maple leaf made me queasy. Part of this is a protest against Zuckerberg’s craven sell out to Trump and bro culture. And some of it is just a protest against American technocracy, writ large. But mostly, I’m just tired of needing a bleach wash for my eyes. I had curated a wonderful community of 12,000 fans, and I’ll miss them. I hope some will follow me here. But tonight, I’m feeling a mix of regret and relief, as this era comes to an end, thanks to entropy and enshitification.

Tonight, I sent my public Facebook page into hibernation. I am leaving up as an archive of my work in the Senate and my work as a journalist. But I no longer find it fun or useful to post there - and my algorithm sends me is a never ending stream of racist, transphobic and smutty posts. That - plus the standard chronic abuse from trolls, which had always been there - and I’m done. Tomorrow I delete my Senate Instagram account too. Ah well. It was fun while it lasted. #Meta #Facebook

One of the reasons I left the bird site two years ago wasn’t political at all. I just got tired of people insulting my personal appearance. It was unrelenting and I am a bit embarrassed to admit how much it upset me, no matter how hard I tried to laugh it off. I’ve been on Mastodon more than two years now without someone making a joke about my being fat/ugly. Alas. That streak was broken this week. And I was struck by how much it bothered me! I’ve been spoiled by Mastodon’s culture of civility.

A full listing of US products that will be subject to countervailing tariffs. If patriotism isn’t sufficient incentive to buy Canadian, economics may be. There is no doubt these reprisal tariffs will hurt Canadian consumers. But Trump’s unprovoked economic attack requires some kind of response. And I think Canadians are grimly determined. Even if we have to give up orange juice and California wines. https://www.canada.ca/en/department-finance/news/2025/02/list-of-products-from-the-united-states-subject-to-25-per-cent-tariffs-effective-february-4-2025.html

Tonight, as a Canadian, as an Albertan - and, incidentally as a once-proud graduate of Stanford University - I stand with my country. With our farmers. Our energy workers. Our auto workers. Our forestry workers. All our exporters. And all our consumers. This is going to hurt our economy in ways we can’t yet imagine. But I believe we will hold fast and hold strong.

I will never forget that this is what Americans voted for. Not by accident. Not for the lolz. Not as a protest. On purpose. And yes. I know “not all Americans.” I know that many Americans on this site, in particular, opposed him. But not nearly enough of you. You have declared economic war on us, your most loyal ally and trading partner. You have torn up trade treaties and a century of friendship over a lie. There is virtually no fentanyl coming over the Canadian border. And very few migrants.

Interesting. The Senate recently did a big update on our Microsoft computers. When the dust settled, it came up with a new configuration that pushed MS News at us. Primarily FOX News and some very "bro" centric lifestyle sites. All pro-Trump all the time. With the help of my staff, I was able to resent my configurations to Canada, and get CP and CBC instead. But. The Microsoft default was right wing news sites, sports, and pictures of women with big boobs. (No thanks , I've already got some.)

I am terrible at making latkes. Indeed, pancakes of any sort defeat me. I blame my (only diagnosed by me) ADHD. This is a hard week for Alberta’s trans community & for the parents of trans teens, who’ve just been robbed of the right to make medical decisions for their own children. When Merv Leitch and Peter Lougheed created the notwithstanding clause, they couldn't have imagined a Canada where premiers could invoke the clause without political or moral hazard.
