Once Paraguay wanted to take a side in a conflict in Uruguay and they ended up declaring war against Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. It was a stupid move, but anyway, after the Triple Alliance took Paraguay’s capital, Uruguay and Argentina’s armies went back home, but Brazil decided it wouldn’t stop until it killed Paraguay’s leader who had fled… in the pursuit we ended up killing 70% of their population (almost all the men) while burning down villages, destroying crops, killing cattle, raping women… but you don't learn much of that in Brazilian history books hehe

Brazilian here. We had several major conflicts where armies from different states fought each other, tried to take the government, or proclaim independence. We call it all rebellions, it helps sell to ourselves the idea that we are peaceful people with a peaceful history.
