🆕 Seven of nine Planetary Boundaries are now transgressed and all seven are at their highest recorded levels of transgression: The Planetary Health Check 2026 finds mounting pressure across Earth’s interconnected life-support systems. Record ocean heat, droughts, floods, wildfires and extreme heat are signs of an Earth system under increasing strain.

🆕 Climate change threatens Europe’s whole food system: extreme heat, droughts and floods damage crops and fisheries, then ripple through storage, processing, transport and trade. Southern Europe is particularly exposed, with recurrent droughts and declining spring‑to‑summer precipitation, a new study shows.

Increasingly hot, dry and windy conditions could substantially extend the area affected by wildfires across Europe, according to a new study led by PIK's Maik Billing with contributions from @npub1v0x…4p4m.

Even limiting global warming to between 1.6 and 1.8C would require far stronger policies to reduce fossil fuel emissions than those currently adopted by governments - which would otherwise allow the world to heat by at least 2.7°C, says PIK Director Johan Rockström at #COP30. 👇

The road (back) to Paris: The world is likely to exceed 1.5°C of global warming within the next decade, yet science shows that returning below this threshold by the end of the century remains physically possible. In a new statement, PIK scientists Ottmar #Edenhofer, Johan Rockström, Gunnar Luderer and Elmar Kriegler assess where global climate action stands and outline science-based pathways to return global warming to safe limits. 🆕 Scientists have established a comprehensive, data-based framework of food system boundaries, translating the nine planetary boundaries into the food sector. The new PIK study shows that current food production and consumption already transgress all nine boundaries. It underscores the need for transformation toward sustainable food systems.
