Dangit, I should have starred those replies on alternative microkernels; I am not finding them now when I search. ;(

2026-10-27 02:51:45 UTC

I haven't mentioned it, yet David Lee Hoffman's "estate" in Lagunitas has, after years and years and millions in attorney fees; apparently been sentenced to some form of eviction?
Maybe there's hope? I don't know:
https://www.marinij.com/2026/09/26/last-gasp-for-last-resort-complex-in-lagunitas/
If you have no idea who David Lee Hoffman is; apparently he helped get 普洱茶「pu-erhcha」aka pu-erh tea, sanctioned for sale in the USA. Oh sure, doubtlessly others were importing such things previously via various smuggling methodologies (e.g. Omei [a Chinese restaurant, now gone] in Santa Cruz, California used to apparently use their furniture importing business to smuggle in Szechuan peppercorns [during the time when those too, were illegal]). If I recollect some retelling of the tale, border agents suspected the "brick" or "cake" forms of the fermented tea as posturing for other illicit herbs?
I have been to the "estate" in Lagunitas and it is lovely.
Apparently the whole ordeal started because of some nosy NIMBY making a report that perhaps some of the buildings on Hoffman's property were not "up to code"; and thus the gradual, protracted, legal disputes began.
As far as I have heard, some of Hoffman's tea, as they have aged in his myriad structures, have taken on characteristics which have led to folks in China, paying a premium price for his aged teas.
All of that subtly and nuance, is lost of legally fixated uncultured sorts.
It is deeply distressing, and a sign of the times in which we find ourselves. The courts turn a blind eye to billionaires and their largess, yet seem to have no end of animosity to leverage against a little guy with a tea business.
It's been some months since I have visited Hoffman's Tea Museum in Lagunitas (separate from the property in question) so I haven't heard the most recent situation from the source, yet when I saw such headlines in my mobile "phone" news apps? That was: not a good sign. ;(
Being focused on more primordial forms of enjoyment than electronic distractions, it probably comes as little surprise that some of his related websites may through TLS certificate errors (as in: they are plaintext HTTP):
e.g. http://www.thephoenixcollection.com/ or http://thelastresortlagunitas.org/david-lee-hoffman/ the pictures of Hoffman there are much younger than he is now; yet despite increased in age, his disposition is pleasant and his knowledge on tea and travels, vast.
Should you have an opportunity, he has been the sort for whom I am grateful to have known. For my part at least, the initial introduction was largely thanks to Oshan Cook (fellow teajay; indeed, the first individual I know who used that phrase) of Om Shan Tea (after he had a falling out with the late Master Wong of Medicine Buddha, he began sourcing teas predominantly from Hoffman and the Phoenix Collection. Other places, such as Wu Wei Tea Temple, in Fairfax, California, also feature a tea menu largely derived from the Phoenix Collection.)
Many things come and go, yet the Hoffman "estate" as it has been phrased? I think should have stayed. The NIMBYs? In Marin in particular? Are awful. No doubt most are presumably more familiar with Marin NIMBYs being why BART does not extend into the North Bay; yet this tale is tragic and a failing in a completely different dynamic.

All this #solarpunk discourse has me wondering:
Is there solarpostpunk? solardeathrock? solarindustrial? solarpostindustrial? solarEBM? solardarkwave? solargoth (that in particular seems almost as if it would be an oxymoron in terms of sensibilities and pale complexions)? solaraggrotech? solarterrorEBM? etc.

I didn't mention this sooner (so the October 16th opportunity is passed, sorry); however for spooky season (via @nprofile…5wu6's Bandcamp subscription mailing list):
"DJ Bat's Rare Halloween Vinyl Nights!
Join me on October 16th and 30th at https://kick.com/djbat or https://twitch.tv/xorcist_official as I go through tons of my rare Halloween vinyl collection for vintage spooky ear-treats!
What you see here is the real rare discs that I just put through ultrasonic cleaning yet even those may fill the night with creepy hiss and howling pops so be prepared for anything! I'll also be bringing out a lot of haunted soundtracks, bizarre spooky discs, and anything else just to help creep the night out. After a couple of hours, things may become visually even more entertaining so stop by each night at 7pm Pacific Time and lets get our haunt on!
Since I have probably over 30 hours worth of material in records alone, expect each night to be unique in and of itself!
Bat"
I saw some of the mid October stream and it was incredible!

There seem to be signs that Ombra Festival will next occur in 2027?
Which is just as well, as I doubt I could have afforded to attend were it to occur in December 2026, as much as I enjoyed myself (at least, until I got food poisoning Saturday night) last year and would want to revisit it.
Meanwhile, I think I may have figured out whatever the industrial festival was that someone I know from Santa Cruz told me about in Ōsaka, Japan. If I am not mistaken, its next occurrence is in April, 2027. Tickets appear: to be sold out already.
This is "good" insomuch as I now hopefully have more time to earn money to pay off my debts and save up for such adventures? Also, the second job wherein it is mostly volunteer run and I am only one of two paid employees (yet they have only budget for one paid employee, thus between the two of us, we cannot work more than 40 hours a week) has a recent change insomuch as the other paid employee is moving out of state. Implying, perhaps I can achieve a 40 hour work week with some imminent possibility?
Ergo, potentially more income; which is lamentably, still necessary given my financial strife.

2026-10-26 22:13:45 UTC

All this talk of grids (smart or otherwise) and the mass media fixation datacenters in recent years with the A"I" bubble, has had me thinking though; like so SF recently put a 45 moratorium on building new datacenters or expanding them (e.g. https://www.sf.gov/news-supervisor-walton-to-introduce-moratorium-on-ai-data-centers-in-san-francisco).
Yet, I don't think a new datacenter has been built in SF in decades?
@nprofile…3c8d can probably correct me if I am wrong; since we talked about this very sort of subject, many years ago. Yet I think a lot of that (datacenters not being built out for decades in SF) had to do with: paucity of power.
San Francisco's fog has a nickname, Karl. Solar isn't likely to be particularly practical. Maybe, you could do some tidal wave power generation? Yet, at scale? And not offend the environmentalists? Or the cargo ships bringing things into the port of Oakland? GLWT.
Not to mention, SF is small. As it is, many of the houses are built with no stand offs, shared walls with your neighbors (it's awful, really; particularly given how expensive housing is in SF and how horridly devastating the fires were after the 1906 earthquake).
Where would you even put such a modern monstrosity as the sorts of datacenters being built out in other realms?
I think maybe one of the 365 Main (now probably Digital Realty Trust) in Oakland was one of the last "new" datacenters built in the region? Which: was a really long time ago, and also: part of Alameda County, not under San Francisco's jurisdiction anyway. I guess Oakland, also passed a 45 day moratorium this month (e.g. https://oaklandside.org/2026/10/07/oakland-data-center-moratorium-approved/) and that is impacting one potential data center build out: Behring Companies, 20,000 sqft facility.
I don't know if you know much about data centers; yet 20,000 sqft is tiny.
The Porn Palace (former home to CyberNet Entertainment Media, before they moved into the San Francisco Armory) was 60,000 square feet. The SF Armory? Closer to 200,000 to 300,000 square feet. Moreover, we didn't have datacenter stuff in those locations; we had fiber from those locations: run to the datacenters where we had such gear racked. (Really, one of my improvements when I started at the Porn Palace in 2007 was to take a "stack" of servers they had piled on top of each other, and rack mounted them. "Amateur hour" would be an understatement. Their previous sysadmin was also moonlighting some contract gigs and had configured their 20 some odd web servers to be RAID0 [which has a multiplicative rate of failure for every disk added, which was happening about once a week, to give himself an excuse to "gotta drive to the datacenter to rebuild a RAID array on a webserver" wherein he would go to his other contract employers or something I guess?)
So to me, the whole "SF bans datacenters" seems as if it is performative politics?
Last time I had badge access to the "largest peering point in California" it was SV1, which is in Silly Con Valley, not SF. Moreover, there are other datacenters closer to that locale on municipal power such as SVP (Silicon Valley Power); which after the whole Enron price gouging ordeal decades ago, is a safer stance for power hungry needs anyway.
I guess, maybe it may make some folks feel good in Oakland or SF that there are month and a half moratoriums on datacenter build outs and expansions, yet I really don't think Oakland or SF are the heart of where those problems are anyway. The forests were long since cut down here already. ;(
The divide between the rich and the poor, continues to widen; datacenters are less vital than housing (California is supposedly at least 3 million units short of what is needed to adequately house its current populace). The big tech broligarchs have mostly taken all the marbles long ago.
Heck, remember when Google (back in their "don't be evil" hah! Long before convicted monopoly Alphabet Inc. era) ran its first two hosting providers out of business, because they were charging by rack space, not power draw and Google was cramming something like 4 shitty motherboards onto one piece of particle board with a single power supply (not good for fault tolerance, yet definitely cheap and dense) to maximize their rack space allotments? Running a hosting provider out of business?! Friggin bonkers.
It's not the dot bomb era anymore; whatever we are contending with presently, seems, in many ways: worse.

Procrastinating isn't really the correct term? However, it's a Monday and I finally submitted a Pull Request to update MacPorts' LMDB to the 1.0.x realms, specifically 1.0.3 here:
https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/pull/36056
GitHub Continuous Integration checks passed OK!
It's up to someone else to merge it (and I sincerely hope that all is well; since I added a notes-append asking users to test newer versions with a link to Trac with diffs; as well as posted to the macports-dev mailing list months ago to see if anyone encountered any issues with the newer versions and I haven't received a single complaint.).
fingers crossed

That'll teach me to go to sleep early, wake up early and fail to look closely at my calendar.
I do work today.
Just, not at 8am!
My shift isn't until 16:00.
Hahahahahahaha, ah well. I guess I could have stayed up later? Or slept in more? I already spent > 70+ minutes on the commute into the "office" how shall I burn the next 8ish hours until my shift actually begins?
Well, for starters, I submitted a Pull Request to update MacPorts' Got (Game of Trees) to 0.130.1 -portable here:
https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/pull/36049
One of the GitHub Continuous Integration checks passed OK. The other one? Is queued.
Hopefully it will go smoothly?
Regardless, it's up to someone else with commit access to merge it.

"YouTubers break the iPhone Duo, but stores aren't seeing broken displays" seems to sum up a lot about what is wrong in the world of Thneeds and capitalism currently.
Like the dumb fuck deejay who broke a laptop (deliberately) during some set as a stunt.
You aren't Jimmy Hendrix.
I fix things.
Seeing wanton unnecessary destruction of material objects, distresses me.
I can (and often do) find better homes for such things than publicity seeking shitheads destroying possessions of the privileged for likes and views.
It also pisses me off when people have broken into my cars and stolen things. Sure, I backup my data, so stealing my laptops is more annoying and expensive than anything.
However, I've given away something like 20 laptops to others over the decades.
Don't steal from me. I am already overly generous.
Assholes.

2026-10-26 01:13:43 UTC

At a laundromat, estimating when I will be back in front of a laptop.
I'm guessing I won't get around to updating MacPorts' Got (Game of Trees) until I'm at my other job tomorrow (2026-10-26 Pacific morning sometime).
Sun has not yet set entirely in Oakland, l am looking forward to seeing the full moon.
No, I don't have any fun full moon party plans or whatever. If anything, maybe I can try to fall asleep early? I typically set my alarm for quarter to 5am on days when I am working the first shift at my other job to give me sufficient time to wake up, have breakfast, etc. before hopping on BART and I am still often arriving later than anticipated. ;(

2026-10-26 00:22:03 UTC

Huh, undeadly.org throwin 500 errors.
In unrelated news: libressl-devel 4.4.0 PR for MacPorts was merged.
Noticed that another MacPorts' contributor created something called dockhand to ease maintainers updates. Finally had a spare moment to look it over, coauthored by clod (my pejorative vernacular for the Claude LLM A"I"). Thanks, but not thanks I guess?

Kind of annoyed I discovered yesterday from one of the UICC emails that Irish classes started again in late September.
Which, is what the instructor had suggested at the conclusion of the last class.
Yet I've been reading the UICC emails and only saw the class announcement link in yesterday's after October is almost over?
C'est la vie.
I registered for the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) in December, so maybe better to focus my polyglot nature on 日本語 for the next while anyway I suppose?

2026-10-24 06:30:11 UTC

Stoked to see an old familiar face at SFO and catch up for a little while this evening!
Made it to Great American Music Hall, alas, missed Zanias' performance! Gratefully, she was vending at her merch table and graciously signed some vinyl and CDs for me!
Apparently it's part of a multi day festival (Substance) and day 1 was yesterday? Though I attended a Substance in SoCal some years ago and also saw A Split Second (one of the performers yesterday) in recent years as well, so not too much FOMO.
Kontravoid was performing while I left the venue z and again, I've seen such performances multiple times (most recently at AMP Festival in 2025) so while I'm sorry to miss the TR/ST deejay set? BART pumpkin and work tomorrow take precedence.

2026-10-24 06:29:49 UTC

2026-10-24 00:36:08 UTC

Awesome. So I am working two shifts today; and a friend's flight lands at SFO around 20:00, when my second shift ends.
Friend has a ticket to a sold out show at Bottom of the Hill (and I just read an article claiming that the owners, who were going to close the venue, apparently sold it to someone who will keep it going, yay!).
Meanwhile, I see in my spam an email of a show at GAMH (Great American Music Hall) and Zanias, whose deejay set I missed at Ombra Festival last December due to getting food poisoning, is apparently performing! That show: starts at 18:30. ;( Doors: 18:00. Hopefully, Zanias goes on later in the evening? I missed some of her set at Cruel World in 2024. ;( Meanwhile: I have seen Kontravoid, more than once. Same for TR/ST (though apparently tonight it is a TR/ST deejay set? Not sure I have seen a TR/ST deejay set.) Less sure about the other performers tbh.
The notification email? In my spam folder. From: yesterday!
Hopefully GAMH emails will no longer be sent to the spam folder?
Also observed: Pixel Grip (who opened for Peaches earlier this year at The Midway and IMHO, upstaged Peaches!) are performing at GAMH on the 28th! May have to check that out.
How this will coincide with my work schedules and other obligations and sleep "schedule" (more accurately: sleep deprivation) remain to be seen.
Today is feeling very much like a mad dash, and I have an annual work meeting for one of my jobs tomorrow morning and Sunday there will be a meeting after work too at my other job.
Never a dull moment?

2026-10-24 00:20:25 UTC

For good measure, I also submitted a Pull Request to update MacPorts' libressl-devel to 4.4.0 (was previously 4.4.0rc1) here:
https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/pull/35916
It's up to someone else with commit access to merge it.
I also submitted a story to undeadly.org; though I will leave it up to one of the other editors to double check it for any errors I may have inadvertently introduced and publish it.

2026-10-23 18:48:49 UTC

I submitted a Pull Request to update MacPorts' LibreSSL to 4.4.0 here:
https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/pull/35895
GitHub Continuous Checks are running.
Hopefully they'll pass OK?
If so, it's up to someone else with commit access to merge it.
This release contains the following Security Fix:
Security fix: Removed eMudhra emSign ECC Root CA - G3 from cert.pem
because of weak keys of some subordinate CAs. For purposes of
interoperability, uncompromised intermediates were added.
Upgrade note: Reinstalls no longer overwrite cert.pem, so this may
need a manual merge if your package manager does not take care of
this. 'CN=emSign ECC Root CA - G3' should not appear in cert.pem.
Among others, e.g.
Security and reliability fixes
Fix parsing issues in X.509 name constraints URI host parsing.Handle IPv6 literals correctly and don't allow specially crafted
userinfo to bypass host checks.
Limit size of buffered DTLS handshake messages to avoid overlylarge memory consumption on small handshake message fragments.
Fix an OCSP responder authorization bypass for clients usingtls_config_ocsp_require_stapling(), of which only OpenBSD nc(1)
and ftp(1) are known when they're used with the "muststaple" key
word.

Leave that as a variant, or FLAVOR, for the sysadmins to turn on if needed.
Thank you, that is all.

2026-10-20 21:32:55 UTC

I had plans for the day after the snac Pull Request submission (which was merged, yay! Thanks Herby Gillot).
I don't know if I am fighting off a food coma, or what, yet my energy levels which were already rather low, plummeted.
Will I complete the other things I had planned, before the end of my shift? Seems: dubious.
At least I was proactive at work and marked some books for next week's lesson since whomever volunteered yesterday didn't!

2026-10-20 02:14:40 UTC

Huh, did a reply I write just vanish into the ether? ;(
Now that I look, it was in response to a reply in an earlier thread yet I don't see my thread entry there either.
sigh
NNTP and tin (or hey, trn if that was your jamm) seemed simpler and more reliable, decades ago.

2026-10-20 01:56:05 UTC

I submitted a Pull Request to update MacPorts' Got (Game of Trees) to the -portable 0.130 here:
https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/pull/35701
It has been merged!
I didn't finish my MacPorts' update to snac yet, because the Makefile patch broke and I've been scampering around all day with a rental car more or less putting all the vinyl I purchased from the Kishi Bashi, AMP Festival, and Denver Wax Trax into storage.
I sincerely need to overhaul my storage unit with much better vinyl storage and that requires time and money, neither of which I seem to have in abundance, just the opposite. ;(
I'll hopefully have more opportunity to fix the Makefile patch for MacPorts' snac tomorrow? I'm currently doing laundry (no more clean clothes and I did laundry while I was in Montreal too! I travel lightly, yet that means I don't have an enormous wardrobe either and due to attempting to air dry my clothes to maximize their longevity? I may be wearing the same outfit I am presently wearing for another day or two.)
I'm exceedingly grateful that rueda posted a Got release announcement to undeadly.org at least! I was planning on that yet, clearly have been burning the candle at all ends as it were.

2026-10-17 19:36:09 UTC

I'm not ignoring the Game of Trees (Got) release. I am currently in Denver. I flew out late Thursday (landing early Friday) to see the Colorado Symphony performing Friday night, notably: some compositions by Joe Hisaishi (best known for soundtracks to Studio Ghibli films) which were commissioned by the symphony.
Lamentably, I received an email Wednesday morning that Joe Hisaishi would not be conducting. Instead, Deanna Tham handled that role in his absence.
The performance was wonderful! I had a seat in the parquet, which is about as close to being in an orchestra, without actually being in an orchestra! If anything, the stage lights bled over somewhat and it was rather warm as a result! I also met up with a highschool friend and his wife for dinner beforehand at some vegan restaurant called Somebody People (apparently deriving inspiration from David Bowie).
I didn't bring a laptop. Maybe I will be in front of one tomorrow? Probably Monday or Tuesday are more likely. I'll update Got and snac for MacPorts after I have equipment more appropriate than this terrible touch screen device.
Next week: I do have a ticket for "Hisaishi conducts Hisaishi" at the SF Symphony. Presumably he will actually be in attendance and I am guessing the compositions will be more familiar as well from what I saw of clips of him conducting at the Hollywood Bowl.
I am pretty sure he has never toured the USA before? He's also in his 70s and the other two nights in SF were already sold out when I purchased my ticket back in July.
Maybe that wasn't the wisest use of the frequent flyer miles I inherited after my mother passed away? Nonetheless I enjoyed myself!
I also splurged at a Wax Trax Records location in the old Stanley airplane company factory (which has been turned into a mall of sorts). I hadn't visited Denver since 2019 and while I first ventured into Wax Trax circa 1995? They now have FOUR locations in Denver! I didn't visit the other three.
I did visit both locations of Mile High DJ Supply (the one in Boulder it turns out is basically just there to make it more convenient for UC Boulder students to return rental gear I guess?) and had a great conversation with their gear wizard Drew (sp?) who also works as a stage manager and teaches DJ classes. The location in Arvada had something similar to DJ QBert's Octagon (though, not octagonal) to facilitate skratch deejays jammin together! Probably more QBert skratch records on display than I've seen at Q*Bert's new space in Burlingame (or the previous space: ThudRumble in San Mateo). It was also Mile High DJ Supply's 11 year anniversary! I purchased a Grandmaster Flash action figure (I had seen pictures of them online yet never saw one in person until yesterday) and a Viper Kittenz fader (the wild style on the packaging was just too cool!).
Now at DEN with a little more than an hour before my flight back to SFO starts boarding.
Anyway, my apologies to any MacPorts' users who may be waiting on updated versions of snac and Got. I'll rectify that within the new couple of days.

2026-10-09 15:57:22 UTC

Wednesday awake around 6am, worked two shifts, dropped off some excess material objects I didn't have time to put in my storage unit at job 1 with a coworker. Returned rental car, got some dinner, went to SFO, flight to YUL left around 23:32.
Landed in Montreal around 8am Thursday, couldn't check into the hotel until 16:00.
Discovered, much to my dismay: O-Taku Manga Lounge which I enjoyed last year? Has since closed!
Still found ways to fill the day (and my belly) before checking into the hotel. Shaved, realized I needed some things (such as a towel, which I decided, against my Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy better judgment not to pack) did some errands, napped for less than an hour, showered, went to AMP Festival pre party at Cabaret Berlin arriving not too much after the 22:00 start time.
I got to the bar for a sparkling water and Nicky, one of the bartenders asks me: "are you a ninja?" Which I have heard many times, along with: "are you a samurai?" And no, I am also not part of the tax collector caste of the shogunate of centuries past feudal Japan. It turned out, Nicky is Japanese Canadian and we have a wonderful conversation about the history of ethnicities and politics (did you know that the Canadians also interned Japanese Canadians during WWII? I did not! I had assumed that was an idiotic move only of the USA.) Turns out, Nicky is also a musician and in addition to being a percussionist does cymbol repairs (check it: https://trashgoblincymbals.com/index.html)
Being exhausted, I am not really up for dancing (despite being a deejay it really takes some marvelous music to make me move anyway) though I certainly enjoyed the tunes being spun and the eye candy of some dressed (or in various states of undress) to the nines.
Around 00:23 my friend from REcon last year who VJed at AMP last year and will be deejayin as LVX on Sunday shows up, introduces me to some folks, and other AMP Festival organizers, had some more good conversations and heard some more delightful dark tunes. Still very exhausted, a second sparkling water does help with hydration yet not sleep deprivation. The pre party goes until 03:00?
I couldn't keep up and walked back to my humble hotel around 01:30.
I think I only slept for around six hours? Still some rest is better than none!
Not sure how the rest of my morning and afternoon will go. Definitely more vegan food in Montreal, maybe I will manage a nap? Yet I'm looking forward to day 1 of AMP Festival which starts at 18:00, it's not quite noon.
Thankfully I have some time to be a little more leisurely without lugging everything with me at the moment!
Lost my GraphGear 1000 sometime last night (I was writing with it at Cabaret Berlin). Annoyingly, it was the 60th anniversary edition one in black. So, maybe I can find another mechanical pencil at some stationary store? Probably not that one. ;(
Hopefully something else decent?

2026-10-07 20:17:46 UTC

In less code nerdy news, I have seen a lot of concerts recently!
Thursday night: I saw Joshua Kit Clayton + David Zicarelli at Indexical in Santa Cruz. A little more details about that: https://www.indexical.org/events/2026-10-01-joshua-kit-clayton-david-zicarelli essentially, both have worked for Cycling '74 (Zicarelli is one of the founders) which are known for musical/performance software Max/MSP. David's performance was using a new patch developed to, well I will probably do an awful job at summarizing the description given that evening, yet essentially it takes elements of samples and song structures and similar to what a deejay might do, arranges them in an auditory pleasing manner. Indexical recently upgraded their sound system to a Meyer Sound Laboratories 7.1 speaker set up I guess? David put all the channels to good use in a very surround dynamic in that intimately small space. Joshua was a little less new patch performance and in addition to his laptop, also had some sort of control surface (sorta of like an Akai MPC? I dunno. It had buttons that were glowing touch screens and knobs) and even a video game controller! Reminiscent of the Autechre performance at Regency Ballroom last year, he asked for the venue lights to be turned off and encouraged the audience to close their eyes. He also made mention of the Ghost Ship fire and some of the lives lost therein (I think I knew at least five or six individuals who died in that tragedy) and encouraged those who knew to think about such loved ones' passing as it had been inspirational for him in that composition. Before and afterwards, the small crowd was lively and conversant and I even met a fellow visiting from Barcelona who was familiar with the Mira and Ombra Festivals which I had attended last year. Though, given that I had work early the next day? I couldn't justify sticking around to shoot the breeze and left shortly after the performance concluded.
Friday night: Snarky Puppy at The Paramount in Oakland. I am, unabashedly, a big fan of Skinny Puppy, yet last year at REcon someone asked me if I was familiar with Snarky Puppy? I was not. I am now! Friday night was a 10 person ensemble at a show put on by SF Jazz, though given that I was a somewhat accomplished jazz trumpet player once upon a time? It takes a lot to impress me. Vari (aka Varijashree Venugopal) was the opener and performed in a trio and to my ears at least? Was much more enjoyable! Bangalore jazzy amalgam with some scat (the vocal kind, not the scatological sort) and flutes and other instrumentation. I purchased the Vari CD at the merch table, yet left all the Snarky Puppy merch alone.
Saturday night: I saw Hiromi (jazz pianist) perform at SF Jazz in San Francisco accompanied by her friend and tap dancer Kazunori "Kaz" Kumagai. Really enjoyable set, the crowd gave two standing ovations! (the second one, after their encore)
Later Saturday night, I saw Kreayshawn at @nprofile…zaad There are some pictures of her performance here: https://www.dnalounge.com/gallery/2026/10-03/ Her set was, short and sweet, largely the same material she performed at Mosswood Meltdown last summer in Oakland. However, she also included a newer tune, "Biscuit" (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrtvL0zdS5A). Afterwards, I chatted with her deejay TOOPOOR (https://www.too-poor.com/) briefly who was good humored and seemed hella chill. Later online researchin her further I discovered she actually produces some darkwave/goth (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DmnWkGV6y4)
Last night (Tuesday) I saw Kishi Bashi at the Rio Theater in Santa Cruz.
The opener Geographer? I had never heard of before, yet put on a really enjoyable 40 minute set! I ended up basically buying every CD and vinyl release he had for sale at his merch table afterwards and he graciously signed them for me. If I had to attempt to describe his music, it reminded me a little of The Polish Ambassador? He played alto sax, and guitar and some sort of MIDI/OSC controller or drum machine and has some backing synths (the last of which had some qualities which reminded me almost of the chip tunes of the SEGA Master System game Govellius with legendary if obscure, COMPILE composers Masatomo Miyamoto and Takeshi Santo contributing to its score?)
Kishi Bashi, I was mostly familiar with from "I am the Antichrist To You" as introduced to me via @nprofile…5wu6 (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_dGqLzOnhA) however, rather than that symphonic ensemble? Last night the performance was as a quartet, comprised of:
Grant Richards (originally from Milpitas and apparently an old college classmates of Kaoru Dill-Ishibashi, synths, vocoder, also during the acoustic encore I think maybe played like a melodica? Not that I had a good view, since they kinda went into the middle of the crowd and I was on the edges as I tend to prefer, yet that is what it sounded like to my ears.)
Josiah Wolf (drummer, originally from Cincinnati apparently).
Mike "Tall Tall Tree" Savino (originally from Long Island, New York I guess? On electric bass and banjo. When he played banjo, at times he also played it with a bow like a violin/fiddle and percussively with a drum stick? At one point he even played the banjo like an electric guitar, whoa!)
Kaoru Dill-Ishibashi (otherwise known as Kishi Bashi, apparently originally from the East Coast, now lives in Santa Cruz with his wife and hence why they chose to kick off their tour at the Rio Theater. In addition to playing violin/fiddle, he strummed some guitars [electric and acoustic] and seemed to be using a looper).
The performance started as the four piece jam band, though after maybe an hour and change, Kishi Bashi did some solo performances, including "I am the Antichrist To You" using a looper and violin to layer his individual instrumentation into something approximating a symphony! Really impressive. Later, as Kishi Bashi phrased it, he "got the band back together" and the other members returned to the stage. When they performed an encore, all the lights of the venue were turned off and they went into the crowd and encouraged the audience to use their cell phone lights while they serenaded everyone with a couple of acoustic tunes. I think they took the stage around 21:00 and they concluded at around 22:58! With maybe only a 5 minute stage exit around 22:48? I suppose the three band members got around 20-30 minutes of recuperation time while Kishi Bashi performed solo.
Oh, I should probably add, there were a couple of mascots which graced the stage too. ハニー(bunny) aka "honey bunny" who mostly danced around, though at one moment also played a small drum set (definitely not a mascot drummer of aplomb such as the renowned にゃんごすたー aka Nyango Star e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UYgORr5Qhg yet still fun in its own way). The other mascot was a worse for wearing looking, Mr. Steak (as Kishi Bashi jokingly observed: "what, we can't find any white gaffer tape!?") and there was some dancing as well as a brief video retrospect of the full life Mr. Steak has apparently led off stage.
Apparently in a few weeks' time Kishi Bashi will perform at the Fillmore in San Francisco! I heard that Geographer will be on the tour at least through the Denver show (which will be at some venue known as the Gothic Theater? The name alone intrigues me.).
Meanwhile, I am working two shifts today and then will take a flight to Montreal late tonight (landing tomorrow morning) for AMP Festival, year two! I was not planning on attending (when I looked into airfare after the dates and tickets were announced many months ago, I observed that all flights were a least a few hundred dollars more in USD than my travel expenses were last year, "thanks" to Trump invading Iran and spiking oil prices, globally. I had more or less given up all hope, when I remembered last week that I inherited some frequent flyer miles when my mom passed away in 2020. I have never been a frequent flyer and it was a bit of a thing to set up an account for her bankers to transfer such things to me, yet they had just been sitting unused for years. Admittedly, I do now wonder if prices in mileage would have been "cheaper" if I had remembered such things months ago? Regardless, it only cost me around $60 USD in booking fees out of pocket [well and many tens of thousands of frequent flyer miles]. I am not looking forward to a flight with the timing such as it is, and a middle of the row seat no less! Not to mention I do not think I will be able to check into my hotel until the afternoon, so I will be wandering around Montreal for many hours presumably tomorrow.) I fly back on the 13th, which means I will miss King Mala at The Independent (she performs on the 12th, yet when I looked into a return flight in order to catch that show [since I had already purchased a ticket some time ago] it would have burned through significantly more frequent flyer miles. Hopefully, King Mala will tour again and sooner than later? Though I guess she is promoting a debut album this tour? I dunno!)
Lamentably: I miss Author and Punisher at Neck of the Woods as I was feeling pretty out of it that night; and since I saw him perform last Fall? I was maybe less concerned with FOMO? Similarly, I had seen Chelsea Wolfe perform not too long ago, so while I was annoyed I paid for a VIP admission to her show only to miss it due to a fever? I think I'll survive. I remain most annoyed that I was too under the weather after Chillits to attend The Tear Garden performance. I had been looking forward to that one for a while.
Meanwhile, when I was in LA: Thoom was great! Bassvictim, despite being the headliner? I dunno, the levels seemed: off, and way too loud? Some of the openers were OK, though I would have to look up more about them to describe them by name, so I will omit that for now. Brooke Candy at DNA Lounge was a lot of fun, grateful I finally saw her perform live (I was planning to see her on Thursday in Los Angeles the night after the Thoom show, yet that show was postponed until December, and the DNA Lounge show appeared on calendar in the interim, so it was not as if I ended up missing much? Well, other than an opportunity to see Sleep at The Catalyst in Santa Cruz that night, which may have been cool. Though apparently some of the surviving members of The Beastie Boys and their kids performed a show at The Catalyst relatively recently that was awesome? I read about it in The Good Times and overheard some others talking about it at the Kishi Bashi show last night.)
I'm not sure what to expect from AMP Festival this year, most of the performers I do not think I have heard before. Last year was excellent and Montreal is neat and I am really looking forward to escaping the USA, even if it will only be briefly, not even a week, of away time.

(I am less certain what to do about the sandboxing support removal mentioned by @nprofile…sak5 believe it or not, I kinda despise Apple and macOS; yet I figure down streaming things for others since I am doing it myself is hopefully beneficial? If I am going to have to get more into the internals of a proprietary for-profit OS from a company that has trillions [plural] in its market cap? I kinda feel as if they may actually be able to afford to employ folks to do this stuff and I am less certain I want to be among them? Particularly given that supposedly in recent years, Apple has become subsumed to some degree by Unit 8200 [e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vc-iH5GEPJ8&t=480s] like the politics and optics of all that are, awful [Unit 8200 are Israeli spies, essentially]; and probably also a big part of why the new Apple Watch is Big Brother "always listening" as just one example of how the company professing to be privacy focused, in practice: is more like 1984's double-speak in 2026. If you can, I would sincerely encourage you to use OpenSSH on OpenBSD!)

I tried to go too far with updating MacPorts' signify to sync it with upstream's 1.64 release (e.g. https://cvsweb.openbsd.org/src/usr.bin/signify?sort=File) there is some breakage and stupid me pushed to the wrong branch (I created a new branch locally, yet apparently forgot to check it out as I sometimes do, being an error prone human, so the push with the breakage went to the master branch, which I then reverted sigh all up there on GitHub for the world to see).
Meanwhile, there have been some changes upstream which aren't simply resolved by removing the sha2.c file from the Makefile; so it's going to take more effort to rectify and my second shift for the day is over in fewer than 30 minutes, so I don't think that is going to happen!
Could have been worse? At least I didn't tag a new release from the botched push? Still embarrassing to have things which should have stayed as a local screw up, get synced to a publicly viewable repo, particularly with security critical code.
This workflow, I sincerely despise. I doubt I will ever be OK with GitHub. Git is bad enough and in this particular instance as I am also working with CVS it's just kind of staggering when I think back to the decades and decades of coding I have done and how many problems are tripping over the version control tools, instead of actually coding.

I submitted a Pull Request to update MacPorts' libtorrent to 0.16.22 here:
https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/pull/34531
GitHub Continuous Integration checks passed OK!
It's up to someone else with commit access to merge it.
As with the lesson learned with 0.16.20, I will wait until this Pull Request is merged before submitting a Pull Request for rtorrent to 0.16.22 (I have that diff prepared and tested locally already) so that the necessary library is updated prior to the tool which depends upon the library!
Release notes for rtorrent 0.16.22 can be found here:
https://github.com/rakshasa/rtorrent/releases/tag/v0.16.22
You'll note "gzip.h: fix build with Clang <17 by @aeiouaeiouaeiouaeiouaeiouaeiou" which was submitted via another MacPorts contributor after my previous Pull Requests were merged, fixing builds on older versions of OS X. The Port Health is looking a LOT better:
https://ports.macports.org/port/libtorrent/details/
For libtorrent at least.
For rtorrent? Still room for improvement (essentially everything older than Big Sur appeals to be failing on the buildbots): https://ports.macports.org/port/rtorrent/details/
I thought about adding myself as a maintainer; yet in keeping in alignment with the "not taking on more responsibilities until I am no longer homeless" I think maybe, I will just keep a watchful eye and update as I see changes, rather than shoulder more burden for the time being? I'm 3 days behind upstream, that's still better than a lot of professional paid developers who have homes seem to manage.

I bought a ticket to see Feed Me at The Midway in SF tonight. (9pm to 2am?)
I also woke up at quarter to 5am to get to work, am close to my second shift ending, am hungry and more than that: tired.
I am thinking: I probably will not go to the concert. Hopefully I can eat something decent, and maybe fall asleep kinda early?
I have work tomorrow (also two shifts) and Sunday (also two shifts, more precisely: two different jobs on the same day) and just probably over scheduled myself for the first half of September's calendar.
I somehow, seem to be falling deeper into debt, am more exhausted than ever, yet at least Chillits will be happening in mid September. Maybe that will be an OK respite? I dunno. (Also, being gone roughly from September 9th through September 14th to give myself sufficient time before and afterwards, also means more gaps in my work schedule, which means less income, because: fewer shifts on calendar)
The whole homeless, nomadic, overworked, underpaid thing is so tiresome. Some claim that "basic income" is how we "solve" these problems? Seems, to me: as if you don't solve problems of a fundamentally flawed construct (money) by making up new ways to allocate money. You instead should: eliminate the fundamentally flawed construct.
In unrelated news: I thoroughly enjoyed last night's final class for Black August thanks to Dr. Hodari Davis.
I have so many books to add to my stack of unread books which I want to read! Yet he gave some great overviews, scraping the surface of the sorts of history that wasn't taught in US history.

2026-08-28 18:54:00 UTC

Meanwhile, Meta settles for $17 billion (apparently $12 billion over 10 years plus an additional $5 billion if YouTube, TikTok, etc. also implement some things?).
Zuckerberg's empires purportedly generate approximately $200 billion a year in revenue with approximately $60 billion in profit!
$17 billion? Over 10 years?
C'mon. That's just an "operating expense" write off.
They should have gone for the throat, don't let this rot stick around. Apparently some are fighting Facebook/Meta/etc. independent of this settlement? I can only hope that they don't take such small amounts of "hush" money.
Predictable for the USA and its so-called "justice" system. No justice, just money changing hands.

/me wonders if Brian Calvert, perhaps best known for his "Canada for President" videos, has a Canadian response to the POTUS renaming "Lake Ontario" to "Lake America". Alas, no "Lake Alberta" renaming of "Lake Michigan" has transpired by the looks of things, yet there is this video "BREAKING: Scientists discover a cure for Billionaires."

So, how are the "fake smarts" (aka artificial "intelligence") realms going? We haven't hit another so-called "A'I' Winter" yet?
Too bad.
Just think of how much worse things will get with regards to global climate change with more datacenters and more HVACs, cooling GPUs and servers, instead of y'know, living organisms. How many more glacier flash flood catastrophes will it take human kind to wake up I wonder?
In particular, I find it dumb founding that the A"I"bros seem hyper fixated on how many lines of code their agentic crapware generates.
I mean sure, you could be some code golf, size coder, demo scene extraordinaire! Commited to Kolmogorov complexity reduction in your sleep! Big O type notation in college courses, was remedial to some after all.
Or, you could realize that even STEVE BALLMER of Micro$oft notoriety, the non-technical guy, knew that IBM's "culture" of measuring productivity in KLOCs (thousands of Lines of Code) was absolute bullshit.
e.g.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHI7RTKhlz0
(when was that recorded? I do not know)
Which is to say, a guy who retired in 2014 who still has an estimated net worth of $130 billion and was by all accounts, not the smartest of the Micro$oft sorts back in the day?
Was still, not as stupid as the "fake smarts" shitwits of 2026.
I have no idea what it will convince the 20,000 or so actively involved in making things worse for all life on Earth, that what they are doing is, not good.
"The Bun Rust rewrite involved translating 535,496 lines of Zig code, resulting in a pull request with a ~1,009,000-line diff and approximately 1.78 to 1.8 million lines of Rust code written or rewritten."
Do you use Bun? I would probably avoid bullshit like that at all costs.

I submitted a Pull Request to update MacPorts' chrony to 4.9 here:
https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/pull/34290
1 of 3 GitHub Continuous Integration checks passed (the other two are queued, hopefully they'll run smoothly; though since one was OK already, that is a good sign at least!).
From the release notes: https://chrony-project.org/news.html it seems as if a lot of the new features? Are actually supporting OpenBSD!
So, that isn't really a big deal for MacPorts' users, though maybe OpenBSD users will think that chrony is worth checking out? Admittedly, the OpenBSD project already has OpenNTPD, though chrony: supports PTP too.
Observational curiosity: 4.9 was released, apparently exactly a year after 4.8 was released (August 27th). I am guessing maybe that was intentional?

I remember seeing 9 to 5 at a drive-in movie theater as a child.
I enjoyed the movie!
Admittedly, seeing it again as an adult, ground down relentlessly by wage slavery under capitalism? The vengeance fantasies against a horrible boss? Hold up, surprisingly well.
What is apparently dumbfounding: the movie was released on BluRay, yet only 3000 copies were manufactured? No 4K UHD release. Meanwhile, listings on eBay for the BluRay, not even new and sealed, are like $300+.
Y'know another movie that seems, overdue for a re-release? Idiocracy. It never got a home release beyond DVD.

Apropos of nothing, I looked at the schedule for EuroBSD and it looks great!
I already bought a ticket to attend Chillits (tbh, I was surprised they reached out to me since I poured tea there like, a decade ago?) and schedules conflict.
Plans can change! Though, it is unlikely mine will; particularly with anything involving flights since I guess jet fuel prices are up 75% since the current administration invaded Iran. ;(
I'll keep my eyes peeled for the proceedings!

2026-08-24 20:35:11 UTC

I forgot to mention, the other day, I also submitted a Pull Request to update MacPorts' rocksdb to 11.8.1:
https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/pull/34198
It's up to someone else with commit access to merge it.
The listed maintainer? Appears to be a maintainer for over 1400 MacPorts!? WHOA!
I can't see how that wouldn't lead to burn out?
Certainly, I understand why rocksdb hadn't been updated within MacPorts in over a year.
Anyway, it wasn't really something I use, so much as there was someone (zOnk) on libera.chat's lobsters IRC channel who was asking for folks to test hlquery (some search engine, implemented in C++). Despite grimacing at the CMake dependency, and the installation notes mentioning Homebrew? I decided to look into building it locally.
I was not successful, however in doing so learned that rocksdb is one of hlquery's dependencies, and observed that MacPorts already had a Portfile for rocksdb, yet it was out of date, so maybe rev bumping it would help?
It didn't help. At least, not with building hlquery locally.
However, maybe rev bumping it would be helpful for other MacPorts' users?
I then seemed to get a lot of unsolicited "advice" about how I could just use Docker from a user with a nickname of Lore; who seemed: to completely miss the ball when it comes to porting software in the first place?
Yes, I acknowledge that Docker makes some things "easier" (and predecessors such as FreeBSD's jails, despite being named horribly) have lower overhead than VMs (where even something such as FreeBSD's bhyve with PCI pass through still dings maybe a 9% performance hit? Way better than the industry average of 40% performance penalties with most VMs, still: not good. IMHO, a lot of the present day waste of clockcycles, RAM, etc. is due to unnecessary layers of abstraction becoming popularized by the so-called "DevOps" movement and those things are fundamentally: antipode to good ops practices for prod.)
TL;DR after some extremely annoying back and forth about how "worksforme" with Docker, is completely not what actually porting software is about? I guess that was too distressing for some in the IRC channel to observe, so they elevated to ops as if to pose a threat and asked me (and Lore) to take a break.
That IRC channel? Has also had at least one user accuse me of being an LLM?
I don't know why it seems so "toxic" to use a term that seems overused by younger generations; yet there it is.
I sort of question the entire idea of a "community" which is ROM unless you get an invite? Why not keep it private, only to those who have been invited? It's unsettling for lack of a better description.
At least one of the prominent individuals within the lobsters (the site, not the IRC channel) is someone who basically ridiculed me out of their IRC channel when I seemed dumbfounded that their project's private SSH keys were shared on GitHub. That person, went on to get if I recall correctly: hundreds of millions of dollars in VC funding for something else, and that project, with the private SSH keys stored on GitHub, by that author's own admission, is apparently now abandon ware.
I do understand debts and poverty, most of this human incarnation seems beset with financial maladies the likes of which stress me out more than I can easily put into words.
Yet those who get hundreds of millions in VC investment? I doubt I'll ever understand. Maybe it's for the best?
Meanwhile, striving to be compassionate and understand where others are coming from, often leaves me feeling at a loss.

Some recent headlines seem to be psyched on how seL4 completed its formal proofs on AArch64 (aka 64bit ARM CPUs, such as Apple Silicon) e.g. https://lists.sel4.systems/hyperkitty/list/announce@sel4.systems/thread/ZL6HYXH3PKI6XUVKMPTLIPKQMWJW7N7M/
Me? I am more excited to see someone ported seL4 to @treehouse.systems/@bunnie's Dabao Baochip1x Evaulation board recently! e.g. https://github.com/vk2seb/bao1x-seL4
I saw there was some discourse on "Hacker" News about such potential (e.g. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47383087), and created an account (hadn't I done that, years ago? I don't remember anymore) to reply to someone asking if it was possible to run seL4 on such hardware, and I guess I can't?! Probably some anti-necro thread "feature" that ignores the reality that much of the Internet occurs in an extremely asynchronous manner (e.g. https://xkcd.com/979/). Ah well, hopefully there is some way that themk will figure it out? I do not see a way to message that individual.
So much for attempting to use the Internet to facilitate collaboration in 2026! (I think Doug Engelbart, if he were still alive, would be dismayed by such anti-patterns.)

Buying things online in the early 1990s was, I mean, I did it. Commerce has never been my primary interest with online explorations.
I bought a used Amiga 2000 from one of the users of VisionSoft (a CNET BBS where I was a volunteer coSysOp in the 408 in the early 1990s; though we did have some UseNet groups and UUCP email as well). We chatted (it had a real time multi-line chat similar to IRC), used the BBS email to figure out where to mail a check ($150ish or so to Ohio I think?), and voilà: a computer showed up at my parents' place some time later!
I bought a used Amiga 1200 on comp.sys.amiga.marketplace a while later (the Amiga 2000 was damaged when shipped from CA to MN for college unfortunately; especially since I spent several hundred more dollars on a used HDD, disk controller, 1084S monitor, extra RAM, a fatter Agnus, etc.) for a little more than $400? I emailed the guy, mailed him a check, eventually he mailed me that system.
One of my friends, would sell used video games via email. Even did group CC bids/auctions, before eBay. Some of the prices he sold PCエンジン「enjin」(Super)CD-ROM² titles for was astounding!
I still remember the first time I purchased a Compact Disc via telnet on cdnow.com, plaintext Credit Card number processing! ;) Snog's "Lies Incorporated" an anti-capitalist techno/electro album from Australia's David Thrussell (e.g. https://www.discogs.com/master/21022-Snog-Lies-Inc). I suppose, maybe I could have tracked it down via a mail order catalogue music vendor such as Digital Underground, Cafe Soundz or Isolation Tank? (I certainly ordered a lot of other post-industrial albums from those three before they set up websites and such).
Admittedly, a lot of that was before 1995. I dug it!
In many ways, it had a lot more going for it than the surveillance capitalistic hellscapes encountered all over the place now.
It was a little weird, going from California, with a 14.4 modem, to a small liberal arts college in rural Minnesota, which had a 56K leased line for their entire campus (of 1500 or so students)!
I was assigned to be a "Junior Sysadmin" as my student job paying minimum wage, only to be told that: I could not take the job by one of their staff (who never even graduated college) because I was not a "Junior" or Senior and that such jobs were reserved for upperclassmen (as if I "picked" the student job which I had been assigned?). ;(
Similarly, I was told that I could not use the SGIs (which were supposedly also reserved for "upperclassmen") even though one of the reasons I went to that school is because they had just renovated their MathCS department and they had SGIs. (For years earlier, I had volunteered my skills at nps.navy.mil and often coded on the Sun Microsystems and SGI workstations they had in various labs there). Needless to say, Minnesota and I did not get along well. ;( I dropped out mid way through my second year.
Ironically, I did end up getting a student job my second trimester as a "Divisional Computing Consultant" providing IT services to Faculty members. Thankfully a self described dyke upperclassman (who lent me issues of "Hothead Paisan: Homicidal Lesbian Terrorist" comics) in my dorm, caught wind that I was "good with computers" after one of her dorm mates apparently walked into my room, horrified that I had my Amiga 2000 open (I was trying to diagnose its faults with a multi-meter to figure out how it got damaged and if I could repair it, even though she was the sort to think that anyone opening her Macintosh was doing something like open heart surgery I guess?). The two women who headed the Divisional Computing Consultant student jobs were a lesbian couple who were pretty chill, all things considered! I still ended up getting enhanced privileges on their (Open)VMS, Netware, etc. systems and such for allocating quotas, though that didn't grant me access to the SGIs, still. ;(
I remember posting to their NOTES (a threaded message board for VMS, which supposedly inspired NNTP readers such as trn and tin) information on how to tag UseNet messages, concatenate them, decode them from base64, and derive the binaries. And the faculty head of the MathCS NeXT(Step) lab offered me a student job with him. Though by then? I already had elevate privileges on just about everything computer campus I was allowed to access and had accounts in the NeXT(Step) lab(s) too and didn't really want more responsibilities for the same shit pay, particularly already having interacted with enough people on campus to know who the jerkfaces were and that one of them, was also a student job employed person in that lab. Not as bad as the rude person who denied me the job I was assigned, but ungh. There was more bad than good at that place.
Maybe, it was a sign of how much worse things would become online in the ensuing years?
It used to be: you had to have a clue to even get online.
IMHO, maybe shipping operating systems with TCP/IP stacks enabled by default? Was a mistake.

Alas, that post I boosted regarding Enterasys passphrase stuff?
I was previously a Network Security Specialist at a place that had a BUNCH of Cabletron (later known as Enterasys) gear though nothing is coming to the top of my head as far as what they need for passphrase recovery/reset. ;(
20 years ago (2006) is when I was terminated from that employer too; I know some of their gear (at least the Cabletron vintage kit) could be "factory reset" which would put it into a default state, yet what those defaults were, escapes me (though maybe not some documentation online somewhere still, perhaps?) at the moment.
If memory serves, by the time Cabletron had become Enterasys, they were deep into the realms of pioneering what would later get more broadly standardized as 802.1X so they were a bit ahead of the curve in some realms, but that isn't really particularly helpful for what was being asked about either. ;(
Meanwhile, as I skimmed RFC10024, I realized I am on a first name basis with at least one individual who is named in the RFC only by last name, first initial.
What a strange time to be alive.

This reminds of some discourse I was privileged to listen to at toorcon long ago when @nprofile…8chz was giving his hardware hacking workshop (think pre-production Chumby era, circa 2006).
Paraphrasing:
Student in the class: "what if someone takes your schematics and starts manufacturing clones and sells them at a lower cost than you?"
bunnie: "If someone, takes my designs, and finds a way to get them to market for less than I can? I'll use them as a supplier!"
It was heartening, like observing a mental equivalent of the martial arts adage "bend like a blade of grass, don't break like a brittle branch" response, seemed as bunnie had already thought about such things and was unperturbed, dare I suggest, maybe even excited that others' might want to build upon his work and find optimizations he had not implemented!
Alas, what we really learn from Raytheon and Lockheed Martin's fears? Are: they are not actually interested in innovations nor the state of the art (which presumably, goes without saying for any companies fixated on weapons manufacturing) and are instead preoccupied with profit margins for their shareholders.
The mercenary industrial complex is, fundamentally, more about greed than anything else, and those at the top, punching down and ruining (or terminating) the lives of others with abandon in their relentless pursuits for money and power regardless of the so-called "collateral damage" encountered in their machinations.
Given that the USA and the Ukraine are also actively engaged in war, there are doubtlessly other messages and misinformation being conveyed, particularly around the repeated narratives related to USA's munitions supplies. So I would recommend an idiomatic "grain of salt" when it comes to such news stories to varying degrees.
Nonetheless, I think many more might benefit from bunnie's wisdom when it comes to concerns about manufacturing cost optimizations; which can be generalized and applied well outside of the sphere of weaponry.

NetApp's CIFS implementation was also fantastic, for its time. Admittedly, I haven't administered any NetApp systems since 2006?
However, even back then, at a "Windows shop" type company? They did not trust Micro$oft for SMB and that was the norm. NetApp's CIFS was way more reliable.

As an aside, there is (Open)ZFS on macOS:
https://openzfsonosx.org/
It isn't officially support by Apple (of course).
However, Apple did, formerly, have folks working on ZFS for OS X. I had dinner with one of them, long ago. He was the cousin of a friend of mine. Over our meal I mentioned MoAB (Month of Apple Bugs) which some other colleagues were behind. My friend, later confided in me that I apparently terrified his cousin. ;(
AFAIK, Apple's ZFS team was disbanded and their efforts were regrouped and they ended up shipping APFS.

As an aside, since you mentioned Real Dolls? The guy who created the Real Doll company (Mike Saenz, e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Saenz) was also behind the first comic drawn via computer (SHATTER, using a 1980s Macintosh black and white 1-bit pixel art, later colored by hand I think?) and I seem to recall was also behind Virtual Valerie (one of the first "adult" video games on CD-ROM). Pretty sure he sold off the Real Doll company long ago.
I couldn't seem to figure out what he may be up to these days the last time I went looking he seemed to have vanished.
Presumably he cashed out and decided to sip piña coladas on some private island and avoid being online in the dystopian "future" he helped co-found? Like MySpace Tom (who seems to have gone cold in online realms circa 2014?), surveillance capitalism pioneer in selling users' data for hundreds of millions!
Though, I guess compared to the sorts of rich tech broligarchs who can't seem to ever be content with their millions (billions? Trillions?!) and continue to torment us with new "inventions" such as Mark "sucks they're Borg" Zuckerberg and fElon Musk? Maybe, we should be thankful occasionally the Mike Saenz and Tom Andersons of the world, decide to stop doing more damage actively?

https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/pull/33980
GitHub's Continuous Integration checks passed OK.
It's up to someone else to merge it.
No one ever replied to my email to macports-dev re: 1.0.0.
I also see, there's a 0.9.36 release which was tagged around the same time as 1.0.1, so if folks do encounter issues (despite my efforts at being proactive, no one apparently cared enough to chime in to my inquiry?) maybe there is an alternative to submit if such things are experienced!

So, since I am logged into the FediVerse due to having updated some code, I may as well share a life update of sorts?
Unlike the month of June, where I only took one day off of work? I took five consecutive days off of work (beginning July 31st, returning to work on August 5th) and saw my friend (and his wife and kids) visiting from Japan twice! (Once in Aptos, the second time closer to San Diego).
I also attended Hard Summer, well, at least day one? As it turned out three of the performers I was interested in seeing: Charlotte de Witte (the primary reason I bought a ticket since that was her only California performance I could find), Interplanetary Criminal and 行松陽介「yukimatsu yōsuke」stylised as: ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U were all scheduled to perform at the same time (20:45-22:00) on three different stages! So, I started with ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U, who began kinda noisy which I was diggin, but the set sorta drifted into some softer stuff and it was time to mosey on to the Interplanetary Criminal stage, and after a couple of tunes, again, hoofed it to the "Harder" stage and listened to probably around 45 minutes of Charlotte de Witte's set?
Hard Summer on the whole: was too sunny, too hot and too much house music for my tastes? Lots of eye candy in very little attire (though just as many folks showing too much skin I would have preferred to have seen less of probably)? The way they funneled everyone in and out of particular exits made getting there and back from where I parked my car: an ordeal. For reference: Charlotte de Witte's set was over punctually at 22:00, however I probably didn't reach the rental car until 00:00?
Sunday, I slept in, ate a decent vegan brunch, decided to enjoy some air conditioning of a movie theater, then went to dinner at an impressively good (if expensive) vegan Italian restaurant. By then? It was around 20:00 and the sun was starting to set and while I could have maybe caught Boys Noize set on day 2? I didn't want to deal with the headache of parking and walking miles again, only to be turned around to walk back not much later.
Not to mention: Friday night? I met up with a friend and saw Black Moth Super Rainbow, and that show was maybe the most impressive thing all weekend? The VJ Kevin Jackson, really made fantastic realtime VFX to complement the trippy audio. And well, there was the possibility of driving further South from LA to San Diego on Monday to meet up with my friend visiting from Japan a second time (since he was visiting his brother's family) so I didn't want to completely drain my already still very exhausted self on Sunday?
Monday was OK! Drive down to San Diego was thankfully mostly uneventful, had some OK vegan sopes at a Mexican spot, met up with my friend for around an hour, then tried some other vegan food (most of it for the road trip back North) before beginning my drive back to the Bay Area.
I stopped about half way through at a cheap motel, got some rest, did some laundry before returning the rental car and on Wednesday? Returned to work!
I also bought a ticket to the DMC Championship at The Midway in SF on Saturday, though since I had my alarm set before 5am for work? Found that I was way too exhausted by the time I was done with my Saturday shift. I BARTed back to the East Bay, had some lunch, ended up taking a nap and doing laundry again before calling it a night (and then awake again early for work Sunday morning!).
At least I have see DJ Bitesize spin on other occasions, so while it would have been fun to see her and doubtlessly some other local turntablists I know at the DMC Championship event yesterday? I am glad I got more rest as I still feel very tired. I'm now at my second job and internally debating if I can really burn the candle at both ends given how I barely made it to job number 2 in time given the commute and timing and cramming in some lunch and grocery shopping beforehand (since if I didn't? Most markets are going to be closed once I am done with this shift).
No doubt I am omitting a lot of other details?
Tangerine Dream show is next week! I also bought a ticket for Feed Me later in August and Emancipator in early December.
There are some other shows in September and October the details of which I am still figuring out, tickets have been purchased for most of what I am planning to attend, I think? Maybe not everything, yet.

I have, not been on the Fediverse much.
So, uh, hi!
2nd job is progressing. I got a raise! (already? Admittedly, I never learned how much I was originally earning). Apparently I am not grossing $23.50 an hour! For reference, assuming a 40 hour work week, in the SF Bay Area, IIRC you had to gross more than $27/hour to not be below the poverty line? That was admittedly, years ago, when I last remember such things.
Moreover: I am not working 40 hours a week. The employer, only has a budget for one paid employee, and there are two; so between the two of us? Maybe I may work 20 hours a week? Last month: I had one day without work (and still was getting texted from work ;-/). However, the other paid employee, was off for a couple of weeks, so there was ONE WEEK in June, where I actually worked a complete 40 hours! Whoa.
At least: I am not at risk of being overworked, as I have been at so many of my past employers where I was kept on call, 24x7, for years?
There are some music things I am looking forward to coming up:
David J (of Bauhaus, Love & Rockets) will be deejayin in Santa Cruz on Friday at The Catalyst at an event called: Spark in the Dark.
Bassnectar and Dead Prez in San Jose on Saturday.
Hard Summer August 1st and 2nd (I am mostly going to see Charlotte de Witte since that is her only performance in California; maybe some of others will be OK too? I hate tiered SoCal "festivals" so I am not super optimistic, yet hopefully will have an OK time?).
Tangerine Dream in mid August.
The Tear Garden in September.
Chelsea Wolfe, also in September.
Maybe Sabaton in November? I need to figure out how to buy tickets, because their California shows are vended by Ticketmaster/LiveNation which want to "verify" me with a phone # yet stopped considering my VoIP number that I have used for decades, a real #.
Probably lots of other shows.
Saw deadmau5 on the 4th of July, but, meh.

IMHO, DynamicLand's "cummunal computing" is the coolest thing I have probably encountered in decades:
https://dynamicland.org/
The YouTube video intro is kind of a useful overview I guess? I was blessed to visit their earlier location in Oakland and WOW!
I haven't encountered their newer location in Berkeley yet. Someday hopefully!
There's something about being in physical proximity to your co-creators, that is absolutely transcendent. Not to disparage open source and such, yet it can feel very abstract and distant and impersonal.
And unfortunately, very often predated upon by those who are not active participants within a core community (e.g. Amazon, Alphabet Inc., FB/Meta/IG, etc.: all use Linux yet: where are Jeff Bezos or Mark Zuckerberg's code contributions? [no, I do not want Sapling, since I was personally friends with the author of mercurial, and knew him well enough to know he turned down job offers from some of the "Big Tech" companies, so why the fuck would I want to use Meta's fork?])

Wait, what is the newest dirt with Bandcamp?
It saddens me, that their old office in Oakland aren't even vacant anymore.
It sickened me that Epic bought them, presumably in what more or less amounted to a pissing match with Apple, only to sell them off to Songtradr, which more or less fired all the remaining original Bandcamp employees (who were trying to unionize IIRC, too little, too late I guess).
TL;DR, to me at least: Bandcamp was gutted years ago.
I think Mirlo is trying to be a newer saner alternative? I dunno, I pitched in financially to some fundraiser years ago; though as a nerd, when I looked at their codebase, I kinda turned up my nose a little bit; it seems as if maybe in the ensuing years they're starting to get a little bit of traction?
Yet: I am not up on whatever the "current" is with Bandcamp. Near as I can discern, it's basically operating from the bones that were built by people who have long since been fired, and the musicians using it, probably are all none the wiser, since they're mostly musicians, not nerds like me.

I haven't explored much in the way of varying graphite in a while, yet spent a lot of money experimenting and have determined, at least among Pentel: I really dig their Graphgear 1000 metallic mechanical pencils; relative to their other plastic things; it has a tactile feel with some nice knurling that pleases my fingers.
I've observed some other mechanical pencils which have fascinating mechanisms to I guess rotate the graphite to facilitate more even wear? I have not gone down that rabbit hole yet. So many choices, so little financial wherewithall.
Nonetheless, thanks for sharing your finds! In particular, I have been desiring a better eraser; I'll give that Staedler-Mars a go!

My favorite were HuCards for the PCエンジン「enjin」which was also the first console with a CD-ROM attachment (and those are darned decent too, even decades later).
There are folks, in more recent years who have made ODE (Optical Disk Emulator) hardware to replace the failing moving parts CD-ROM drives; some have added additional functionality such as RGB output and whatnot. It's glorious!
I still have a sinking suspicion that some of those HuCards may have been rewritable, somehow? Mostly because I once owned some prototypes which had different games on them, than what the outer labels suggested. Those were purchased from a friend, who was friends with the son of someone who worked for NEC, so their provenance was not sus (aka they were not bootlegs) though the methodology of how that media may have been rewritten, was definitely not public knowledge; even in decades of dev circles and warez scenes, I have not heard so much as a peep.

Similarly: I appreciate case insensitive filesystems as a user; yet as a coder and sysadmin, please: give me that case sensitivity.
Moreover as a polyglot who reads and writes in orthographic systems which are not alphabetical at all, the kneejerk "reaction" by some security wonks to insist on ASCII as a way to "mitigate" homograph attacks is all kinds of awful and I do not have sufficient screams for how upset it makes me feel when I encounter that level of dumbing down.

2.0 was released with the Amiga 3000, so June 1990 I think?
Yes, Amiga Workbench had preemptive multi-tasking as they tended to describe in that era. The provenance for Amiga Workbench/OS was TRIPOS Trivial Portable Operating System) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRIPOS) dating back to 1976 with its first release in 1978.
Given that you're a dog lover, I think you might also get a kick out of Jay Miner's dog Mitchy's paw print being included in the designers' autographs imprinted in the plastic of the Amiga 1000 (inner case, as an easter egg) as can be seen here: https://dfarq.homeip.net/jay-miner-atari-and-amiga-computer-designer/ Other Hi-Toro/Amiga designers (e.g. Dave Needle) also spoke highly of Mitchy's influence on the Amiga's design. ^_^
Some, erroneously decry the Amiga's "lack of MMU" as why it failed. The Amiga 3000, shipped with an MC68030, which had an MMU. Amiga UNIX (which ran on the extremely rare Amiga 3000UX), AFAIK, used the MMU? If I had to guess, had Commodore not declared bankruptcy in 1994, they would have augmented future versions of Amiga Workbench to make use of such hardware since Amiga 4000s were known to ship with MC68030s, MC68040s and even MC68060s, all of which had MMUs.

Indeed, a release Safari does not exhibit such issues.
I do dev work too; for example:
/usr/bin/openssl version
LibreSSL 3.3.6
(released: March 15th, 2022)
Whereas:
/opt/local/bin/openssl version
LibreSSL 4.3.2
(released May 25th, 2026; and I updated the MacPort for that the same day, since I am one of the MacPorts' maintainers of libressl [and libressl-devel]).
For years now, I've mostly observed my Feedback to Apple, go ignored. It's not as if they weren't made aware of the issues I encountered with the 243 Safari Technology Preview release; but they certainly didn't seem to integrate any meaningful fix with 244. I updated the Feedback. Given their past history of ignoring me? I am guessing they'll keep doing so. If they keep ignoring me? Fine. If that makes it into the next Safari release though? It's on them, not me. Maybe, someone is better at rattling their cage than I have ever been. Hopefully!

Preach.
I've also encountered a text entering latency issue with Safari Technology preview release 243, where I will be typing and then SECONDS will pass, with no text input. Not buffered either, just key strokes are completely ignored.
I filed Feedback.
I thought maybe it was fixed in Release 244 (WebKit 22625.1.17.19.1)? Yet exploring that more and encountering the same bug this morning, confirmed it's still there. So friggin annoying.
Good thing I have other browsers!

A lot of early spammers would harvest SMTP addresses from NNTP posts. ;-/
Subsequently, a lot of NNTP clients, stopped sharing SMTP addresses as a mitigation.
Idiotically, years later some blogging software dev with more readers than sense (Joel on Software probably? I no longer remember; think the sorts of dumb it.sh who advocate for "fizzbuzz" in interviews [which is the sort of programming problem elementary school students with a grasp of BASIC would have surpassed in childhood]) decided to advocate for using "email addresses as a login" and that anti-pattern became extremely prevalent in subsequent years, even though it was after there were multi, ongoing, even commercial efforts in anti-spam. It's almost as if: popular bloggers maybe don't have a clue? Or maybe: they were in cahoots with spammers? (Then again, I also remember when dip it.sh Daring Fireball blogger asserted that Johnny Cache's bug found in Apple's WiFi stack was hogwash, which incited MoAB [Month of Apple Bugs] by security researchers, in retaliation to what stupidity it was to fanboi so hard for Apple unnecessarily. I guess the Daring Fireball individual missed the reality that Johnny Cache graduated with a Masters from the CISR [Computer Information Security Research] program at nps.edu [previously: nps.navy.mil] aka the Naval Postgraduate School, where reverse engineer wizards such as Chris Eagle were among the instructors, and really had nothing to prove, nor lie about.)
Admittedly, I mostly stopped using NNTP/Usenet back in the days when Netcom moved it off of local "spool" and the latency (over dial up) seemed excessive.
Last I checked, commercial NNTP providers with extremely long retention policies seemed to be favored by some warez sorts utilizing NZBs (the professed "defense" relative to p2p is that: by only leeching from a commercial NNTP provider, there was less liability as an individual was not sharing warez with others in a p2p torrent/swarm/etc.? I dunno, I am not a lawyer and the idea of paying for an NNTP provider just to get access to a lot of alt.binaries.* hierarchy seemed like it wasn't my cup of tea.)

It was observed around April of last year that Apple switched out rsync for OpenRsync in macOS Sequoia:
https://derflounder.wordpress.com/2025/04/06/rsync-replaced-with-openrsync-on-macos-sequoia/
However, as others have mentioned elsewhere, Apple seems to be conspicuously absent when it comes to donors listed with the OpenBSD Foundation.
Michael Stapelberg did a blog write up recently exploring some vulnerabilities in rsync and contrasted that with his own rsync alternative implemented in Golang, and had some kind words to write about OpenRsync as well: https://michael.stapelberg.ch/posts/2026-05-24-minimal-memory-safe-go-rsync-vulns/
So that may address some trust related concerns with regards to security; yet none of that touched upon the LLM stuff vis-à-vis rsync either.
I'm curious if Apple has received error reports via their Feedback? Since presumably, Apple now have one of the larger deployments of having shipped an alternative. Alas, Apple are rather tight lipped when it comes to outsiders. ;-/
There is at least this as far as Apple's fork of OpenRsync: https://github.com/apple-oss-distributions/rsync
Yet I don't even see a single closed Pull Request on that repo; so whatever changes are being made, do not seem as if they are reflective of a larger community of contributors.

On Thursday I was reminded to provide an invoice to the person who writes my checks at the end of the month.
Even though, some months ago I was told by the Board that they were just going to give me a monthly stipend and I wouldn't need to invoice anymore.
I mean, whatever, it's not my call, right?
Anyway, I made an invoice.
My monthly stipend: $450.
My hours as invoiced for the month of May: $550.
It's kind of amazing how I always seem to get short changed when others want to change the way I am paid, innit?
Maybe, someday, people will pay me more? I doubt it.
I remember once, not long after getting hired by an employer, I received a check and it was INSANELY high! I talked with our Accounting Department (just one person, really). Turned out:
She accidentally paid me the hiring bonus which should have gone to the person who referred me.
So, that over payment, was reversed, and the person who referred me, presumably received the hiring bonus I was erroneously paid.
All's well that ends well?
No.
I was divorced, yet also paying child support and needed to report any changes in salary/etc. as a result when they received that pay stub?
They thought I was lying to them about how much I was being paid.
It took all sorts of inordinate amounts of additional BS submitted to the courts, to unfuck that mess.
Otherwise, my child support payments would have been adjusted to something even worse, possibly more than what I was grossing.
So y'know, someday: it would be awesome if everyone and everything decided that it was OK for me to have money and not be in debt, poor and homeless, instead of what I actually struggle with constantly. ;(
That day? Isn't today!
I doubt it will occur as long as I remain in this human incarnation, everyone seems to punch down with abandon and somehow expect me to give them more.

Yeah, Google got rid of their cache a many years ago and with it one of the fundamentally useful features they had (since archive.org doesn't scrape with as much frequency as Google's crawlers).
As if to torment individuals such as I, who remembered when it was actually not a complete steaming pile of it.sh, Google kept the cached link for a very long time though; it just: wouldn't link to anything anymore. Impressively idiotic! ;-/

Meanwhile, the OS X Leopard OpenSSH 10.3p1 issues related to PAM (which I think was heavily reworked relatively recently) seems as if they may be able to be worked around by disabling PAM and passphrase authentication and just using SSH keys?
https://trac.macports.org/ticket/73757#comment:8
I still haven't dredged up any of my OS X Leopard vintage laptops to recreate let alone remediate these issues, though I am heartened that maybe someone figured out a workaround.
(Honestly, having contended with various issues related to PAM and passphrases: I kinda think using public/private SSH keypairs is maybe, a saner way to go anyway?)

Interesting question! Alas, I do not have an answer.
I have predominantly studied (albeit, formally though not to the level of ordination) Daoist and Buddhist magic (and mysticism) which is rather underrepresented in the West and probably entirely absent from DnD?
Admittedly, I never got deeply into DnD and my days of playing JPRGs more or less ceased after the SNES era (once upon a time I made some minor contributions to a ROM hack translation of one of the Famicom Final Fantasy games which hadn't at received an official release domestically back then and was really into that series, but FFVII upset me to no end and I pretty much gave up on that franchise and everything related to it ever since).
There are some pop culture explorations of such themes, e.g. SpellCaster for the SEGA Master System and Mystic Defender for the SEGA Genesis, both derived from the manga 孔雀王「Kujaku Ō」"Peacock King" which essentially focus on a protagonist who is a Buddhist monk who specializes in exorcism and devil hunting. There are some live action films too (though I am less familiar with them).
Having written as much, such rites and rituals are often interwoven with religious traditions (there are religious sects of Daoism, also rather underrepresented in the west). Another pop culture reference that comes to mind in cinema in more recent years was the 2024 Korean film 파묘「Pamyo」(known in the USA as: Exhuma) which explores shamanism, burial rites and rituals, exorcism of a ghost, etc.
If you are into 武俠「wǔxiá」films, there are some pretty incredible CGI embellished scenes of such systems of magic in more recent years too.
So, that probably doesn't answer your question?
Regardless, such things, while often mystical and religious in nature, are completely removed from stage magic; and seem rather distinct from contemporary concepts of "chaos" magick. Though, in the latter in particular, I think there may be some overlapping reliance on egregores and sigils, within my limited understanding which seem to remind me a lot of some talisman methodologies from older mystical/religious traditions as well.

That isn't to say that LibreWolf is without issues.
For example, on macOS? They don't sign their binaries, which means that it runs afoul of GateKeeper and their instructions for working around this are basically: "use Homebrew".
Homebrew: has spyware (aka telemetry) by default. So, not really a good look if you are supposedly doing privacy hardening?
You can, use xattr and work around that.
It would be great it the LibreWolf devs would figure out how to actually sign their binaries though.
Nonetheless, there was some recent YouTube person who was like, "Imma compare five different 'privacy' focused browsers and see how they compare with tcpdump."
LibreWolf was the only one not "phoning home" or some other BS. Brave, DuckDuckGo browser, etc. all those other "privacy" focused browsers? Were making tcpdump go crazy.
Like, that is the minimum bar and most don't even pass that. ;(
The Tor Browser Bundle exists for reasons, and unfortunately, we still live in a world where probably everything on the web if not online, should be accessed over Tor. Worse: because we live in the world of surveillance capitalism spyware and databrokers by default? A lot of things break when attempting to access them via Tor.
So, workarounds remain necessary.
LibreWolf, is at least making an effort at one of those workarounds.
Most? Are paying lip service or worse: outright lying and users are being duped.
LibreWolf still has a lot of room for improvement. Yet at least it seems as if their efforts are not a complete disaster? Having OpenBSD folks kick the tires more with a port, will doubtlessly help more encounter and presumably remediate some other glaring issues.

Thankfully, there are alternatives to rsync!
e.g. https://openrsync.org (also see: https://github.com/kristapsdz/openrsync) in the last year or so, Apple decided to replace rsync in macOS with OpenRsync. I created a Portfile for MacPorts, but closed that Pull Request recently for other reasons (and will probably get back to it eventually if Kristaps tags a new release. I get the impression maybe some feathers were ruffled since it seems as if perhaps Apple utilized Klara Systems under commission to do some of the porting work instead of remunerating the lead dev? I dunno. I am speculating, so take all that with a grain of salt; I could be completely wrong.)
There's also https://github.com/gokrazy/rsync (written in Golang) and the author recently did an exploration of how it (and OpenRsync) were immune to some vulns found in rsync in this blog post: https://michael.stapelberg.ch/posts/2026-05-24-minimal-memory-safe-go-rsync-vulns/
OFC, there are way different alternatives, such as Unison (https://www.cis.upenn.edu/~bcpierce/unison/ and https://github.com/bcpierce00/unison) or if you are using something with OpenZFS as your filesystem, you can benefit from zfs send and receive for synchronization at the block level.
I'm old enough that I still consider ZMODEM's ability to resume a file transfer, pretty awesome. ;)

Pet cat named cat5?! Seems as if you found a pretty excellent hosting provider based on that alone. =^.^=
Companies, treating people fairly would be something!
I have heard that once upon a time, people unionized and fought (and some maybe even died?) for a 40 hour work week. Once in my career, I was part of a union! Only once though. ;-/ That job did not last long, mostly because my then wife decided that she didn't like San Luis Obispo some months after we had moved there, and wanted to move back to Santa Cruz. Crazy me, I prioritized family and loved ones above jobs, so I quit and moved back to Santa Cruz to be with my wife and children.
Yet, ever so briefly? It was kind of awesome to be a union employee (at the time I was working for the County Office of Education in San Luis Obispo). My boss, if he saw me at my desk and it was 17:01? Would say things like: "go home! We aren't paying you to be here. There will always be more work tomorrow!" Pretty decent guy! A rarity among managers whom I have had.

2026-05-27 01:12:59 UTC

I did receive a text from previously mentioned new coworker if I wanted to work tomorrow morning.
I suppose; I could schedule that?
Yet: I already submitted my time sheet and my manager (for lack of a better description) I guess passed that up the chain yesterday; and it has my hours until the end of the month (for reasons that make little sense to me, but probably make more sense to the reality that the treasurer is a volunteer and acting on their own schedule even if it seems to be prophesying rather than based on past occurrences).
Anyway, I texted back that I would be willing to work if necessary, but didn't want to cause additional strife and that was 5+ hours ago and I haven't seen a reply.
So for now: I think I am going to enjoy a day "off"? Most of June I am scheduled 7 days a week.

Nearby and cheap are both excellent qualities. ALSO HAS A PET CAT?! I do not have sufficient words of awesomeness. Curiosity piqued!
I don't even remember the last time I had badge access to a DC anywhere, maybe around 2016? I have been somewhere beyond alt.sysadmin.recovery BOFH levels of burnout for a while.
Yet, once upon a time? I was one of five sysadmins in the ops group as Sauce Labs, which (again, at the time) ran the cross browser development/CI/CD infrastructure for the likes of "Fortune 1" (which, again, at the time, was Walmart: boo). We had more than 40 racks of gear spread across 2 DCs in Silly Con Valley (including SV1, which was the largest peering point in California at the time) and we were looking to establish another POP somewhere in the EU (probably, Amsterdam? Though I was chatting with someone in Frankfurt who had 100GbE cross connects in Frankfurt that seemed chill enough he was hanging at a hackerspace I helped co-found in SF; so probably good peeps?). Alas, when I was terminated, I was also told that I was their "highest paid person on the team" and they weren't open to a pay cut for me to keep my job (so much for my hopes to get out of debt and homelessness! Things which: seem to persist, still.). Admittedly, what I was paid, relative to others? I think was a pittance? Not as bad as some employers (I recently did some calculations of a previous employer and realized that once they put me back on call 24x7 despite that being a stipulation to not happen as part of my hiring agreement, that they were paying me below the minimum hourly wage: by a fractional penny. The bastards!).
I started a second job last Monday. It has some other weird complications such as: not only can I not work more than 8 hours a day (good, I am still burnt out from being on call 24x7 for YEARS). I also: cannot work more than 40 hours a week, keeping the schedule of a fellow employee in mind (the two of us I guess are the only paid employees out of a swath of volunteers, and they have only allocated funds for a 40 hour work week for one, and there are two of us) making for all sorts of logistical challenges that are the sorts of things that make me wonder: I am now 50. I was forced to work (unpaid) as a minor. Will I ever, before I die: find a job that pays a livable wage with no more than a 40 hour work week?
I was wondering that before starting the second job, but the strange permutations that capitalistic paradigms seem to invent to provide me with new challenges I had never before imagined, seems: boundless! Not the sort of infinities I would be into contemplating, so much as the ones I am beset with against my will!
C'est la vie!
No data center! Though, I do have a badge. It is a very different sort of badge. One that seems: largely superfluous, yet required a lot of criminal background check stuff. Thankfully, also not a police badge nor CBP nor ICE badge. There are badges and then there are badges and this is just a pretty run of the mill not particularly useful to anything beyond the systems of domination and control in which I find myself subsumed because of others' paranoia I guess level of badge.
Also: no pet cat. ;(

There was an article written recently about an rsync rewrite in Golang not being vulnerable to some vulnerabilities found in rsync.
The author went the extra mile and had some kind words to write about OpenBSD's OpenRsync as well:
https://michael.stapelberg.ch/posts/2026-05-24-minimal-memory-safe-go-rsync-vulns/#openrsync
Ironically, I saw this not long after closing a Pull Request to submit an OpenRync port to MacPorts: https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/pull/28096
Not that I don't still have an interest in such things, but it seems as if there are some other things going on (if I observed things correctly, it seems as if Apple maybe commissioned Klara Systems to port OpenRsync to macOS (e.g. https://github.com/KlaraSystems/openrsync)? Yet, it didn't seem as if they did so in a very collaborative spirit with the lead developer Kristaps Dzonsons?). Moreover, I didn't want to just leave that dangling when other MacPorts contributors were side-eyeing the PR as being left open for so long.

/me looks over a job for "Offensive Security Engineer" from the company that used some LLMs to break Apple's MIE (Memory Integrity Enforcement) built upon ARM's Enhanced Memory Tagging Extension (EMTE).
1. I do not have a degree in engineering, so I do not want "Engineer" in a job title.
2. $500 USD/year fun allowance, $300/year Internet and data allowance, $300/year book allowance
OK, maybe I want to have too much fun, but that can presumably come out of pocket, I don't need (and probably do not want) my employer to pay for fun.
$300/year for Internet? Seems: low. That shitty GM/Chevrolet car I had with 4G LTE WiFi "Unlimited" was $25/month or $300 a year. I guess, if you buy a Rivian (base price: $58,000ish USD for the R2 which is not yet for sale, or $70,000+ for R1 variants) you can get Connect+ (5G WiFi) for $15/month or $12/month effectively if you pay for a year up front, so "yay"?
Fuck that noise. It's 2026. I don't want shite wireless Internet as a primary uplink. Give me FIBER! 10Gbps from sonic.net is something like $40/month which is about as cheap as it gets in the SF Bæ Area, that's $480/year before taxes/etc. I don't know what init7.net charges, but they offer 25Gbps fiber for a reasonable price too.
If you're trying to hire world class red team types, posing threats to multi-trillion dollar valuated companies?
$300/year for Internet? C'mon.
I probably spend a lot more per year than that on books too. Sadly: I rarely find myself reading much these days. I'm also, not exactly buying rare or obscure books (well sometimes things that are out of print) but more often: I preorder autographed copies (to support the authors as much as possible). It's cheaper than buying signed first editions after they have been published, but it still probably exceeds $300/year.
"Business class traveling" I guess maybe that is a perk? I do not travel a lot via plane and I am 50 and have only once in my life flown business class (an unexpected upgrade thanks to my mom while I was en route back from 23c3 using her frequent flyer miles I guess?) it was nice insomuch as: I could fully recline and so I slept the whole flight back basically. Is that something I would want to do with much frequency? No. If the job is remote? Please, let me stay remote. I do not want to fly all over the place. Give me more $ for a fast uplink, srsly.

IMHO, the current glut of A"I" BS (having considered myself a "survivor" of at least one previous so-called "A'I' Winter") is just the rich cycling their wealth among other rich folks.
According to awfully one sided "documentary": "The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist" there are only approximately 20,000 people actively working on A"I".
It was further conjectured within that terrible piece of film making that there are maybe, at most, 200 people working on preventing malicious abuses of A"I".
So of humans on Earth: we have (roughly): 2000 billionaires.
20,000 doing whatever they can to milk that half a TRILLION dollars that the current POTUS ear marked for A"I" research.
Maybe 200 individuals actively engaged in preventing disaster when that bubble pops? (Those 200 or so are presumably being paid? The "documentary" did not go into details, really about anything, it was such a puff piece. Sinister spin doctoring.)
At recent count there are supposedly 8.3 billion humans on Earth at the moment?
It is daunting to dwell on how few are impacting so many, so horribly.

I am not a lawyer.
However, from a legal perspective, theft of physical objects is tried in criminal courts, whereas something such as software piracy, is tried in civil courts.
So, morality notwithstanding there are legal distinctions as well. Piracy/copying intellectual property/biting a rhyme/plagiarism/etc. and stealing/theft/robbery/etc. have never been, and foreseeably: will never be synonymous.
Personally? I consider morality a higher bar that far too few pass.
For example: in many states within the USA, capital punishment is still sanctioned, thus it is legal.
Meanwhile: murder is unequivocally immoral.
Murder is prohibited by many ethical belief systems entirely and explicitly e.g. "Thou shalt not kill."
Albeit, even there poetic license may yield some exemptions. e.g. The Egyptian Lover's "Killin it":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcbSQnIvE7o
(Also see: UNIX like operating systems' use of the command "kill" in relation to shell based job control [complemented by shell commands such as: ^z, jobs, bg, fg, etc.])
Another problematic area in the USA: slavery is still sanctioned by the loophole intentionally left in the 13th Amendment with: "except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted" IMHO, slavery is intrinsically immoral. Yet here we are in 2026, with for-profit prisons, ICE "detention" camps and myriad maladies, still.

Having now tested LMDB_1.0.0-branch per the request for testing (https://mastodon.social/@hyc/116616354177923882) I was at first thrown for a loop when running make and encountering:
"ld: unknown options: -soname
clang: error: linker command failed with exit code 1 (use -v to see invocation)
make: *** [liblmdb.so.1.0] Error 1"
Thankfully, reading the Makefile revealed the following:
VERSION_OPT = -Wl,-soname,$(SOVER)
For MacOSX:#VERSION_OPT = -Wl,-current_version,$(VEREXT)
So, swapping which VERSION_OPT (I am testing on macOS 26.5 Tahoe at the moment) was commented out rectified that!
It has me wondering about: "For MacOSX" I think Apple officially refers to their OS as: "macOS" now? The nomenclature of "OS X" styled branding was deprecated circa 2016 with the release of macOS Sierra.
That is the most inconsequential nitpick though. Regardless, thanks again for the mirror! And well, of course, all the rest of the source code and efforts in improving and maintaining it!

LOL.
Admittedly, Alan Kay had some words to say about Dijkstra, e.g.
"Arrogance in computer science is measured in nano-Dijkstras"
(excerpt from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KivesLMncs&t=16s)
Given that Alan Kay (in his own words): "I made up the term 'object-oriented', and I can tell you I did not have C++ in mind," one might wonder:
What did Alan Kay have in mind?
I'm more or less certain, he had Sketchpad in mind:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=495nCzxM9PI
Alan Kay was a student of Ivan Sutherland's. IIRC, part of Alan Kay's graduate studies, was effectively porting Sketchpad to different hardware than what Ivan Sutherland had used in his own doctoral thesis work.
In the video with Sketchpad, Alan Kay's comment at around the 2 minute 8 second mark is:
"Now Sketchpad is also, I believe the first true object oriented programming system, because what we see here is actually is making a dynamic instance of that master drawing that was just done. He called them 'masters' nowadays we call them 'classes' because of Simula."
The TL;DR is: object-oriented programming, in the words of the individual who coined the term:
Seems to have originated in Boston, Massachusetts and Sutherland himself was from Nebraska. Admittedly, Kay was also from Massachusetts, though when he was a student of Sutherland's, it was in Utah (origin of the infamous Utah teapot) was in relation to the graphical objects manipulated (using a light pen, predecessor to the computer mouse) on screen.
Maybe, because I am from California and was born within close proximity to Xerox PARC? I never cared much for Dijkstra's takes on computer science. I found it awfully damning that Dijkstra seemed to write most of his notes almost illegibly with paper and pen(cil) rather than electronically and in machine readable formats. Dijkstra seemed to be from the transitional period when computing, was still largely performed by humans known as computers; rather than machines which subsumed the nomenclature thanks in no small part due to transistors. Maybe, if being generous, we can attribute the concept of a semaphore to Dijkstra? Though I am more or less certain, such things existed in railroads prior to Dijkstra repurposing that nomenclature within computer science.
Also: "GOTO considered harmful" can fsck all the way off. A GOTO is more or less synonymous to a JMP in asm, or an a href in HTML, such constructs exist in many languages and there is fundamentally nothing wrong with them whatsoever.
