Powerful piece by V (formerly #EveEnsler )!
We are seeing the rise of #psychopatriarchy everywhere
Psychopatriarchy is jet fuel to #racism, #colonialism, #imperialism and #capitalism
by V (formerly Eve Ensler)
Wed 28 Oct 2026
"For those of us who have spent our lives trying to dismantle this endlessly destructive paradigm of #patriarchy, it has become increasingly clear in recent months that something more terrifying is afoot.
"The wheels are off the cart. We are in the midst of a chaotic, demented acceleration of the most violent and cruel aspects of this system which has evolved into what I am calling Psychopatriarchy.
"Psychopatriarchy is a reaction, a backlash against the progress we have made on all fronts: #WomensRights, #CivilRights, #ImmigrantRights, #WorkersRights, #TransRights etc.
"It has birthed an #authoritarian #fascist reality, poisoning our social and psychological environment with terrorizing violence, cruelty and precarity.
"It has consolidated the #BillionaireClass who are driven by the mindset summed up in the slogan 'move fast and break things.' Or, one might say, grab things, rape things.
"Psychopatriarchy is found in the 120 people who own more money than half the population on earth, in the systems of oppression, surveillance and violence which become more and more sophisticated and widespread, in the few mainly #WhiteMen with extreme wealth and power who are now merged with the government and own the systems of communication, #AI, police or #StateMilitias like #ICE."

Hey, so one of my dear friends broke his back while working on someone's roof. His household needs some help. These folks help EVERYONE they know and have built a sustainable homestead on their family land, and have gatherings for those who love #MotherEarth! Matt is a good human and has helped so many... Please share and donate if you can!
"My husband Matt fell from some staging while working on a roof. He broke his back (L1) and needs to be in a full back brace until it heals. He's a #stonemason and will be unable to work for at least a few months. He's also a singer and misses being onstage. He needs assistance covering his medical bills and living expenses through the winter. Your contribution of any size is very much appreciated. "

New Data Shows Native #Homelessness in #KingCounty Three Times Higher Than Previous Count
Following an earlier Point-In-Time count, new data shows Native people account for 15 percent of unsheltered individuals in King County, Washington.
by Nika Bartoo-Smith, Underscore Native News + ICT October 16, 2026
"A new report released shows that there are more than three times as many unsheltered #AmericanIndians and #AlaskaNatives in King County in Washington state than what a previous government agency report showed.
"The University of Washington, the Urban Indian Health Institute, and the Chief Seattle Club teamed up to do their own research and correct the data that came from King County Homeless Authority in June.
" 'We unfortunately see this flaw in research all the time. We call this #DataGenocide,' #AbigailEchoHawk, a citizen of the #PawneeNation of #Oklahoma, said in a press release. “People who identify as American Indian or Alaska Native in combination with another race are too often erased from data that is used to inform policy and funding. We know this is a problem, yet we see it over and over again.'
"The report found that American Indians and Alaska Natives make up 15 percent of unsheltered individuals in the county despite accounting for only 1-2 percent of the total population (that’s using alone and in combination data from the 2020 Census numbers).
"The initial #PointInTime count from the housing authority showed only 4.2 percent of #unsheltered individuals self-identifying as American Indian, Alaska Native or Indigenous.
"In July, leadership at both #ChiefSeattleClub , a Native-led housing organization, and the #SeattleIndianHealthBoard estimated that number was likely closer to 15 percent, but the undercount highlighted ongoing flaws in data collection, as previously reported by #UnderscoreNativeNews + #ICT. "

‘Pure arrogance’: anger in #Finland as #Google illegally fells 250,000 #trees for #datacentre
Company ordered to stop work at two sites in country, which has found itself at forefront of tech firms’ latest push
Miranda Bryant in Muhos and Otanmäki
Thu 22 Oct 2026
"Behind a wire fence lies a vast gaping wound of earth. Before Google’s arrival a few months ago, an estimated quarter of a million trees occupied the 330 hectares (815 acres) of forest near the town of #Muhos in rural northern Finland. Now they are all gone.
"After the tech company illegally stripped the entire area to build a datacentre – taking even the #TopSoil with it – all that remains is a vast expanse of mud indented with the trail marks of machinery, puddles and mounds of earth, roots and branches. Residents say that brown water flowing off the site is going into a stream that feeds the #OulujokiRiver.
" 'It doesn’t end. It goes on and on,” says Mari Annala, an ecologist from the Finnish Association for #NatureConservation ( #SLL ), looking at drone footage of the former forest from the perimeter."

Fall Into #Begathon | October 22–29
Keep #CommunityRadio alive and thriving. Support #WMPG 's Fall Begathon!
"Free speech has deep roots, and here at WMPG, those roots run deep. For more than 53 years, WMPG has been a place where we support local artists, make space for different perspectives, and craft shows around real human interaction. That kind of radio doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because listeners like you keep it going. So this Begathon, help keep WMPG’s roots deep. Help keep the radio human.
"WMPG has been turning up the volume on community, creativity, and connection—bringing you music you won’t hear anywhere else, voices you won’t find anywhere else, and stories that make you stop and listen. And here’s the thing: WMPG only exists because you’re listening. You are the reason independent, community-powered radio continues to fill the airwaves in Portland, throughout Southern Maine, and around the world.
"Now it’s time to keep the signal strong. During Fall Begathon, October 22–28, we’re going for $55,000 to help power the people, programs, music, and equipment that make WMPG uniquely WMPG."

#Brazil #Protesters Accuse #Meta of #ElectionInterference
Hundreds of Brazilians protested against alleged Meta interference in the presidential runoff, accusing the company of restricting Lula’s campaign content while boosting Flávio Bolsonaro’s. The Superior Electoral Court has given Meta 24 hours to demonstrate compliance with orders requiring equal treatment of both campaigns.
October 20, 2026
"Hundreds of #Brazilians protested outside Meta’s #SãoPaulo offices on Monday, accusing the technology giant of restricting the reach of President Luiz Inácio #Lula da Silva’s campaign while boosting far-right candidate #FlávioBolsonaro, six days before the presidential runoff. The demonstration coincided with a court order giving Meta 24 hours to prove it was treating both campaigns equally.
"The protest on Faria Lima Avenue called for an end to what demonstrators described as the suppression of progressive political content. Organizers also demanded transparency in content moderation algorithms, protections for activists and journalists, and compensation for damage to public debate.
"The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) imposed the 24-hour deadline amid mounting scrutiny of Meta’s handling of the campaigns. The dispute intensified after internal messages emerged in which company employees acknowledged that Lula’s account had faced restrictions compared with #Bolsonaro ’s. The messages indicated that Lula’s #Instagram posts could not be promoted for nearly 24 hours between Oct. 9 and 10."

#LockheedMartin Showered #SusanCollins With Cash as F-35 Program Hit Turbulence
By Noah Hurowitz, 10/15/2026
Excerpt: "From May 1 to June 30, 2023, employees and top executives from Lockheed Martin donated $59,500 to Collins’s campaign committee. The donations were outliers during that period: Collins was among the largest recipients of Lockheed cash; the company was her largest single donor over those two months; and it was the largest spending blitz on Collins by Lockheed compared to the same period in other years.
"The effort appeared to pay off for Lockheed. In July 2023, less than two months after the release of the Government Accountability Office report, Collins voted in favor of appropriating funds to purchase 83 new F-35 jets. Later that year, when the final version of the military budget was signed into law, Collins celebrated the economic boon she said it would bring to the state of Maine."

#Brazil’s #Lula challenges #Meta at electoral court for alleged #algorithmic #bias and #AI restrictions
By MAURICIO SAVARESE
Updated 6:41 PM EDT, October 15, 2026
Excerpt: "Gean Ferreira and Evelyn Santos, both lawyers of the Lula campaign, said in a statement that Meta’s content delivery is selective against the incumbent and favorable to Bolsonaro, an ally of U.S. President Donald Trump.
" 'On one hand, content from candidate #LuizInácioLulaDaSilva and his supporters faces delivery restrictions, without any justification or transparency,' the lawyers said. 'On the other hand, profiles acting as political operatives for the opposing side ... receive a disproportionate and artificial reach, garnering more views even than global celebrities.'
"Lula’s campaign wants Brazil’s top electoral court to order an immediate end to the content restrictions and pressure Meta to make up for the lost traction by doubling its reach to rectify the harm inflicted.
"On Oct. 11, as Lula’s voters started complaining about their use of Meta tools, the big tech company told the electoral court it rejects accusations of being skewed to Bolsonaro. The company admitted it has faced technical glitches that affect accounts beyond Brazil. It also said it acts in full compliance with Brazil’s electoral regulations and is committed to providing equal platform access for all political parties."

Excerpt: "When small American communities say no to big data centers, they often find tech companies won’t take no for an answer.
"That’s what happened in the tiny #Michigan #farming community of #SalineTownship last year, when the township board chose not to make 575 acres of #farmland available for industrial use. The developer responded with a lawsuit.
"Faced with an expensive legal battle and uncertain odds in court, civic leaders in the community of fewer than 3,000 residents felt they had little choice but to settle the lawsuit and make way for a $43 billion project by Oracle and OpenAI.
" 'None of us up here wanted this thing,' township Trustee Dean Marion said at the time. 'We still hate it.'
"Many residents were furious, concerned the project would change Saline’s rural character and distressed about the loss of the township’s control over its own future. But their elected representatives said they saw little recourse.
“ 'We were read the facts of what could happen. This township does not have the money to fight these big companies,' Marion said. 'We were dealt the cards we were dealt, and we felt our hands were tied.'
"Similar battles have played out in various ways across the country as #datacenters have proliferated and #ArtificialIntelligence has boomed. Because data centers need lots of land and electricity, and the new hyperscale AI data centers need much more of each, they often target #rural communities. Local officials are often overwhelmed and outmatched.
"Reporters in newsrooms across five states teamed up to examine the tactics developers are using to overcome growing local opposition in small-town America.
"We found:
• Soft targets. Increasingly, data centers find themselves unwelcome in small communities. But they have found ways to capitalize on zoning rules that date back decades or move into places like rural #Alabama, where there are no zoning rules at all and no mechanism for local residents to constrain the industry.
• Tempting payouts. Developers are experimenting with new and bolder tactics to win support in small towns. One developer offered $10,000 to every household in a #Pennsylvania township to overcome local opposition.
• Legal pressure. When blocked, developers will use #LegalThreats and lawsuits to try to force the door open. That’s what happened in at least four communities in #NewJersey, where developers are suing after local governments moved to exclude them.
• Unusual secrecy. Data center developers rely on #secrecy to hide their intention, leaving local officials in places like rural Michigan’s #LenoxTownship to bear the brunt of public outrage and anger. Elsewhere in Michigan, officials say nondisclosure agreements are preventing them from telling their own citizens what data centers have planned in their communities. In another case, a small city sued The Oregonian newspaper in an unsuccessful effort to keep details of #Google ’s water use secret.
" 'It doesn’t have to be this way. The companies could come in a very straightforward way, build in as much as they can to alleviate the public concerns,' said Janet McCabe, an Indiana University professor and former environmental regulator at state and federal agencies.
"Unlike traditional development deals, which residents often embrace, she said tech companies seem to prioritize their own interests over those of the places where they operate.
" 'It’s often not the case that business comes in,' McCabe said, 'and wants to approach communities that way.' "

[Thread] So, back in 2024, the city of #SanfordME cleared out a #HomelessEncampment in a wooded area near an abandoned mill. Since Sanford has NO #HomelessShelters (not even a #WarmingCenter), folks had no choice but to take up shelter in the nearby abandoned mill building. And, of course, there was a fire, though some of it was still standing. Despite repeated sweeps, folks kept coming back to the mill building (though now the city has closed off the street). And Sanford still has NO shelters or options for their #unhoused residents!
'They don't care': Sanford to dismantle homeless camp as residents face uncertain future
by WGME Staff, Mon, June 17, 2024
SANFORD (WGME) -- "Sanford city leaders say a homeless encampment at Heritage Crossing is a health hazard and they plan to dismantle it on Monday.
"But many of the 60 to 80 people living there, in tents and cars, say it's the only home they've got.
"They say the city has done nothing to help them.
" 'Trying to get #housing help is a joke because there is none. Why isn't the city doing something for us? Why do I have to live in my car like this? The city doesn't care. They don't care about any of us. We’re considered bad people, I guess,' said Roberta Doherty, a Sanford native who is living out a car.
"Sanford City Manager Steve Buck says case managers have been offering services and space at local shelters [OUT OF TOWN] to people living here. But he says many campers are unwilling to take them up on their offers.
" 'There is capacity to meet the anticipated needs for rehabilitative and shelter services provided individuals will accept the offer of services. It's not necessarily that there are 30 apartments waiting [BULLSHIT! THEY HAVEN'T EVEN BEEN BUILT], but there's shelter services that is not a tent in the woods,' Buck said.
"Those 30 apartments he's referring to are plans by the Sanford Housing Authority to build a new 30-unit apartment building with support services exclusively for people experiencing homelessness. [STILL WAITING...]"

The island where locals say #datacentres are taking their water
Muhammad Islahuddin, #Batam, and
Kelly Ng, #Singapore
" 'Water! Water!' the crowd shouted as it stormed a compound with data centres, armed with empty plastic bottles and jerry cans.
"There were about 300 of them, all residents on the Indonesian island of #Batam, and they were furious that the taps at home had run dry, while the data centres in the new #NongsaDigitalPark seemed to have enough water to protect their machines from overheating.
" 'Not a single drop has come through our taps for the last three months... Our water supply had been reliable until the data centres came,' Dewi Susanti, one of the protesters, told the BBC.
"People in her village, #BakauSerip , were now depending on tanker trucks that dispensed 'dirty, cloudy and smelly' water, she said.
"Batam's water utility told the BBC it was working to improve supply, but did not comment on whether the disruption was linked to demand from the data centres."

#Dawnland
“The question about #IndigenousPeoples and #NorthAmericans is the fundamental question of this land. Maybe all the fractiles in creation since the arrival of #Columbus have finally accumulated enough power to create the #TruthAndReconciliation Commission.” —gkisedtanamoogk
Synopsis

Reconnecting With Native Plants And First Foods At #Seattle’s #DaybreakStar
Program volunteers care for #tule, #camas and #salmonberries, other traditional flora.
by Brian Bull, Underscore Native News October 6, 2026
Excerpt: "Native empowerment has been the theme of Daybreak since it was founded by #activists in the early 1970s. Led by #BernieWhitebear , a large group occupied the decommissioned #FortLawton military installation as part of a larger, coordinated movement to #reoccupy spaces once inhabited by #NativePeople before #colonization. The occupation ultimately led to the creation of the Daybreak Star facility, which broke ground in 1976 and opened a year later as a cultural center with social and education services for the local Indigenous population. Whitebear served as director of the United Indians of All Tribes Foundation in the center until 2000 when he died from colon cancer."

#Audubon - 11 Native Shrubs to Make Your Yard a Wonderland for Birds
From plantings tips to which bird species they attract, get to know some of our most common shrubs found across North America.
By Georgia Good
Published September 24, 2026
"Sure, trees and flowers are great, but tucked between them is another plant just as crucial for birds and worthy of your yard space: The humble and life-giving shrub.
"But what exactly is a shrub? Shrubs are perennial plants with multiple woody stems instead of single trunk. And yes, shrubs and bushes are the same (though 'shrub' is the more formal, botanical term). Their spring blooms offer nectar to hummingbirds and other pollinators; their berries fuel birds through long winters and migrations. Shrubs host insects that feed chicks, and they provide vital shelter year-round. Many nesting and resting birds prefer them to open tree canopies—their dense, tangled thickets protect them from heavy winds, snow, and rain, and from predators like raptors and cats.
"By growing native shrubs, you can offer critical food and shelter to migrating, breeding, and wintering birds—a powerful antidote to habitat loss. That 'native' label matters, too: Birds aren’t adapted to non-native plants, which often can’t support the protein-rich insects that they rely on. And non-native fruits are like fast food for birds. High in simple sugars and low in healthy fats, they’re often empty calories, a dangerous diet for a growing bird, or one flying across the hemisphere.
"To find the best shrubs for your neighborhood birds, use Audubon’s #NativePlant Database. And to create a rich, diverse habitat, complete with perches, shelter, and food, try balancing shrubs with larger trees—and watch your yard come alive with berries, flowers, and wildlife. A sanctuary for birds, and perhaps for you, as well."

Colorful #RainbowChard
By Molly Watson
Updated on September 16, 2019
"Rainbow chard kicks Swiss chard up a level in both looks and flavor. Those in the know are aware that "rainbow chard" isn't an actual varietal of chard, but simply a mix of white-stemmed Swiss chard, red chard, and golden chard. When those three power players come together, they pack in a lot of flavor. As a result, rainbow chard has the intense mineral edge of #SwissChard, the earthy sweetness of red chard, and the wonderfully mild nutty flavor of golden chard. "

Scientists discover 180,000 #GiantTortoises on one #Seychelles island
Free-roaming #Aldabra population far exceeds human population of Seychelles after decades-long recovery programme
8 October 2026
Excerpts: "A survey of the world’s largest free-roaming giant tortoise population has discovered that the once #EndangeredSpecies is thriving.
"A population of Aldabra giant tortoises lives on an island in Seychelles called #Aldabra Atoll.
"The most recent survey, led by #SeychellesIslandsFoundation (SIF) and the University of Exeter, revealed there were approximately 180,000 tortoises living on the island. This is the highest figure ever recorded for the species and far exceeds the human population of Seychelles.
"The new figure was obtained by a team who analysed five years of tortoise counts between 2018 and 2022. It is the first update since a widely cited figure of 100,000 tortoises from the late 1990s.
Aldabra Atoll is one of only two places in the world where giant tortoises are found in the wild, with a much smaller population living in the #Galápagos.
Dr Frauke Fleischer-Dogley, the CEO of SIF, said: 'More than 180,000 giant tortoises roaming freely on our atoll is proof of what long-term commitment to #conservation can achieve. This is wonderful news for Seychelles, for the world, and for everyone who has worked to protect Aldabra.'
[...]
" 'These results are great news for the tortoises and testament to the fantastic work done in the field,' said Dr Dave Hudson, a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Exeter’s Cornwall campus.
" 'But it’s important to remember that the numbers provide a baseline – not an endpoint.
" 'Hopefully we have provided the conservation managers the evidence they need to track future change and act early as the tortoises face increasing pressures from #ClimateChange , drought and #InvasiveSpecies.”

#ICE Agent at #NYC Shooting Has History of Alleged Violence and Illegal Arrests
#BrendenCuni, an ICE supervisor, has been accused of excessive force and tackling a pregnant woman to the ground. Several of his arrests were later found to be unlawful in federal court.
Dhruv Malhotra, Oct 9, 2026
"An Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent on the scene of a shooting in upper Manhattan on Thursday has repeatedly been accused in federal court of unlawful arrests and using force during arrests in New York and Minneapolis, a WIRED investigation finds.
"On Thursday afternoon, ICE agents shot a man, identified by city authorities as #OscarBelgal, in Manhattan’s Marble Hill neighborhood, near the Bronx. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said agents surrounded the man’s car, in which a 5-year-old child was sitting, before firing multiple rounds—as many as seven, witnesses told local media. Belgal, the New York Police Department said, was hospitalized after reportedly being shot in the neck. The child appeared unharmed.
"Footage from the scene shows a man in a high-visibility yellow construction vest brandishing a modified AR-15-style rifle with a pistol grip, sling, and holographic sights. That man, according to court documents, social media posts, and publicly available personal information reviewed by WIRED, is Brenden Cuni—an ICE supervisor with the agency’s National Fugitive Operations team who has been involved in several arrests in the New York City region and Minneapolis during Operation Metro Surge last winter."

So, back when I worked as a student Reference Assistant at the Uni library, #Wikipedia was pretty new, and I remember the Librarians debating on whether or not to recommend it as a source (and also one of my history teachers). My argument was, if I could go to the source and verify the information, I should be able to include it as a cited reference. The Librarians agreed and allowed it (as did my teacher).
However, apparently, 90% of folks who use #GoogleAI (or other #AI tools), DO NOT go to the source and verify the information. Well, damn! That's a big problem! The few times I've used AI to look up, I ALWAYS go to the source!

Mass #quarantine issued in #Russia after unexplained death of #plague researcher
Unconfirmed reports have suggested there was a laboratory accident.
Beth Mole – Oct 5, 2026
Excerpt: "Roughly 200 people are under medical observation, several hospitals are under quarantine, and dozens are in isolation in Russia following the unexplained death of an infectious disease researcher at the #Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute of Siberia, in the town of Shelekhov, according to early reports of the situation on Sunday and Monday.
"Researcher Darya Shipilova reportedly died last week from pneumonia of 'unknown' cause, according to Rospotrebnadzor, a Russian public health agency.
"Unconfirmed information regarding her death has swirled. Some reports have claimed she accidentally broke a test tube containing the plague pathogen, #YersiniaPestis , on September 25. She subsequently fell ill, was admitted to a hospital September 29 with severe pneumonia and died overnight between October 1 and October 2. The head of the Russian region that neighbors Irkutsk, Alexey Tsydenov, initially reported that she had died of plague but later altered his statement to say she 'possibly' died of the disease."

#BreakingNews - Violent Arrests Underway at #Lochiel #TreeSit: #GrandmotherCottonwood Cut Down -- '#NoBorderWall'
The Last Remaining Grandmother Cottonwood Cut Down Just Now after Violent Arrests at NO Border Wall Tree Sit in Lochiel
By #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews, Oct. 5, 2026
#LochielAZ -- "After violent arrests at the tree sit in Lochiel this morning, the last remaining grandmother cottonwood was cut down. Screams could be heard during violent arrests around the tree that many have come to love. #Oodham women joined in the dramatic #protests, standing in front of massive #BorderWall construction trucks.
"Laiken Jordahl said, 'Just horrible footage of #DHS contractors toppling the last of four #AncientCottonwoods to build double border walls across the #SanRafaelValley. The wall cuts through the key remaining #WildlifeCorridor for #endangered #jaguars between Arizona and #Sonora, where human border crossings are seldom seen.'
" 'A #ProtestCamp had occupied and protected this tree for more than 60 days, halting construction. The camp was raided and campers were arrested this morning."
" 'This wall will effectively lock the remaining jaguars in the U.S. into solitary confinement, while permanently marring one of the last remaining #WildPlaces along the Arizona border.'
"Screams can be heard as a woman is attacked and thrown to the ground in a violent raid on the Lochiel tree sit at the border, east of #NogalesAZ.
" 'You're stepping on her!'
" 'There's barbed wire there!'
" 'Come now! US #BorderPatrol illegal and violently invaded camp. Multiple violent arrests. Camp standing strong against genocide and tyranny,' was the alert from #TierraLibre, #NoBorders this morning."

‘Small, flowering islands’: German city reveals how nature thrives when neighbours care for street tree beds
Published: September 21, 2026
Excerpt: "As towns and cities grow, #biodiversity is being squeezed into ever smaller spaces while people experience a progressive loss of everyday contact with nature. Street tree beds – and the practice of caring for them – offer cities a way to counter urban biodiversity loss while enriching people’s connection with nature in their neighbourhoods.
Our research shows that citizen stewardship of street tree beds can boost species richness and diversity in urban areas."

#Datacenter ’s request for diesel generators sparks criticism
By Claudia Levens, USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect//April 23, 2026
#PortWashington, #Wisconsin — Neighbors of Port Washington’s $15 billion #AIDatacenter and advocacy groups are voicing public health and #environmental concerns about plans for backup #DieselGenerators at the site under review by Wisconsin regulators.
"They’re also asking Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources for a more robust analysis of the entire project, but especially of the diesel generators, after the agency signaled it’s likely to approve air quality permits for them.
"The data center’s developer and operator, Vantage, submitted permitting requests to the DNR for 45 diesel-fired backup generators that would provide a combined 87 megawatts during grid failures, according to applications submitted in August and September of 2025, shortly after officials in the City of #PortWashingtonWI signed a development agreement.
"Construction on the #datacenter is well underway, and it will soon house #OpenAI and #Oracle, which will leverage the site to advance #Artificialntelligence.
"Diesel generators are pickup-truck-sized power sources, often used as emergency energy backstops for when the grid fails, especially at large commercial and industrial facilities that run around the clock. More frequently, that includes #HyperscaleDatacenters . Wisconsin is a hub for diesel generator manufacturing and distribution; it’s the home of several industry players, such as #Generac Power Systems.
"But diesel generators also produce #pollutant byproducts known to affect the environment and cause or exacerbate health problems, especially when several of them are used in full force, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
"Those concerns were at the center of an April 14 virtual public hearing held by the DNR as part of its review of Vantage’s request.
"Dozens spoke at the hearing, including neighbors of the site, environmental advocates and public health experts, and even more submitted written comments. In total, almost 550 people spoke or sent comments to the DNR.
"Almost all urged the DNR to more thoroughly review the plans and reconsider a preliminary determination issued Feb. 26, which states the generators’ emissions would not surpass state and federal air quality standards. Collectively, they criticized the DNR’s review, emphasized health concerns and asked for reasonable safeguards to protect neighbors.
"The DNR is expected to issue a final determination on the roughly $11,000 permit within the next several weeks.
" #Environmental advocates say DNR’s policies for backup generator reviews obfuscate public health risks
"One of diesel generators’ pollutants at the center of concern for neighbors and environmental advocates is #NitrogenOxide. In excess, #NitrogenOxides can cause or exacerbate respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, according to the EPA. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified #DieselExhaust, which includes nitrogen oxides, as a Group 1 #carcinogen since 2012.
"Nitrogen oxide emissions react with sunlight to form #ozone and the reddish-brown #haze of #smog in the air, as well as with water to contribute to #AcidRain conditions, according to the #EPA .
"National air quality standards set two upper limits for nitrogen oxide concentration: one established in 1971 that averages the pollutant over a year, and another established in 2010 that examines the pollutant over a one-hour period.
"The DNR did analyze potential nitrogen oxide from #Vantage ’s proposed generators averaged over one year. The agency concluded that emissions would fall below one-year limits established by National Ambient Air Quality Standards, according to the DNR’s preliminary determination.
"That analysis derives from proposed limits on the amount of fuel Vantage would use, roughly 324,000 gallons each year, per the DNR’s preliminary determination. However, it’s worth noting federal regulations do not place any limits on diesel generator use during emergencies."

#CentralPark Was Her Home and Her Studio. She Was Killed There.
#FrancisLeeRogers painted birds in the park, her home for decades. She was found dead on Sunday, beaten and stabbed, shaking a community of friends and collectors of her art.
By Corey Kilgannon and Chelsia Rose Marcius
Sept. 29, 2026
"Francis Lee Rogers was a fixture in Central Park’s Ramble, a wooded area that is popular with birders.
"She spent her days painting the Ramble’s birds and kept her homemade network of feeders filled with seed, as legions of bird lovers walked by hoping to catch a glimpse of warblers and sparrows.
"For years, Ms. Rogers, who was #homeless, brushed off concerns about the perils of a woman in her 60s — or anyone, for that matter — spending nights in and around the Ramble as she largely had for decades.

Oregon Police Are Charging a Local News Outlet $2.5M for Records About One Cop
A Eugene-based publication requested records about a cop accused of misconduct. The city slapped it with a prohibitive fee.
By Lauren Harper, October 1, 2026
Excerpt: "How much does it cost to get more information about a cop who punched someone in the face?
"If you guessed anything lower than $2.5 million, you’d be wrong — at least according to the city of Eugene, Oregon.
In August, the local news outlet #DoubleSidedMedia filed a public records request for records about police officer #JustinPeckels, which focused on potential misconduct between 2018 and 2026. Peckels has been the subject of community complaints, including for punching a resident in the face during a traffic stop, making the records vital for oversight and their release clearly in the public interest.
"The city’s response is beyond belief. In its response to the request on Monday, the Eugene Police Department claimed searching for records and processing the request would take at least 44,816 hours of staff time and cost approximately $2,484,599.04. (A separate request by the outlet for similar records concerning a former police officer, Eric Klinko, was met with a comparatively modest estimate of $195,869.52, for a grand total of nearly $2.7 million for both requests.)"

#Mamdani wants to turn #LowerManhattan government offices into nearly 4,000 apartments
Story by Allaire Conte, September 30, 2026
" #NewYorkCity is moving ahead with a plan to replace an aging government office building in Lower Manhattan with nearly 4,000 apartments—a project that could nearly double the number of permanently affordable homes built in the neighborhood over the past decade.
"Mayor #ZohranMamdani announced on Sept. 22 that the city had begun public review for the redevelopment of 100 Gold St., a city-owned site that currently houses the Department of Housing Preservation and Development and other municipal agencies.
"The winning proposal, from GFP Real Estate, would also replace an existing older-adult center, create roughly 40,000 square feet of public-realm improvements, and add a 40,000-square-foot publicly accessible fitness center.
" 'Where better to deliver thousands of new homes than the former site of our City's housing agency?' Leila Bozorg, deputy mayor for housing and planning, said. 'The redevelopment of 100 Gold will be a major step forward in creating the housing New Yorkers need—including permanently affordable, rent-stabilized homes—in addition to new community space, with no funding from the City.'
"That last piece is central to how the project works.
"Rather than committing city capital to the development, the project will use a cross-subsidy model, with its roughly 3,000 market-rate apartments helping support approximately 1,000 permanently affordable units."

Hmmm... Bulkhead root cellar? That could work!
Storing Your Harvest Without a Root Cellar
"Now that you have grown and harvested beautiful fresh vegetables from your garden, how will you store them? Not everyone has access to a root cellar. Here are other ways to store your harvest to keep your homegrown fruits and vegetables ready to eat through the winter months!
In our great-grandmother’s day, most houses had a root cellar or a cold storage room somewhere in the house. Today’s modern houses don’t include that feature and pride themselves on having warm, dry, finished basements instead of cold, damp cellars with dirt floors (for a good reason!).
#RootCellar Alternatives
First, find a cool, dry place in your house:
- Does any room in your house stay below 60°F but above freezing?
- Do you have a closet on an outside wall?
- Can you section off the coolest corner of the cellar or attic?
- Do you have an unheated mudroom or entry?
- How about using picnic coolers or a clean metal garbage can with insulation in an unheated garage or shed?
My parents used their bulkhead for cold storage. It had easy access from inside and outside, and the wide steps made handy shelves. My parents could open the bulkhead door occasionally to add fresh air, but the warmer cellar air kept things from freezing on extra-cold nights.
How to Store Different Vegetables
Different fruits and vegetables need different temperatures and humidity levels for successful storage. There are four basic groups..."

Not sure about the tire one (they eventually degrade and pollute), but some interesting ideas. I wonder if burying a metal cooler would be better than an old freezer (because of refrigerants).
25 DIY Root Cellar Plans & Ideas to Keep Your Harvest Fresh Without Refrigerators
By Jennifer Poindexter
"Have you ever stopped to think about what people did long before refrigeration? I’ve already touched the subject on how to live without refrigeration, but have you ever really stopped and thought what life would be like without it?
Well, one way was with the help of root cellars.
The great news is that they are still around today.
So today I wanted to bring you different root cellar options. If you are someone interested in going off-grid, you might find some inspiration here. And if you aren’t interested in giving up your refrigerator, then hopefully this will be of interest to you for extra food storage."

Well, I'm nearly out of the commercial deodorant I've been using. That means I have several containers to fill up with some #DIYDeodorant! YES! (And I won't be using Tea Tree or Lavender essential oil, but Sandalwood instead.)
DIY Natural Deodorant…That Actually Works!

"Ingredients in Homemade Deodorant:
- Unrefined coconut oil – Coconut oil contains fatty acids, like lauric acid, which are known for their antibacterial benefits. It can help reduce the odor-causing bacteria in your arm pits, leaving you refreshed and smelling clean.
- Unrefined shea butter – Also super antibacterial and non-comedogenic so it won’t clog your pores. It also adds moisture to the formula.
- Arrowroot powder/flour – A highly absorbent powder to help wick up extra sweat. Effectively acts as an antiperspirant. You can replace with tapioca starch if that’s all you can find.
- Baking soda -super effective at fighting body odor and also soaks up sweat. Note: baking soda can be a potential skin irritant so feel free to add less to the formula and work your way up.
- Lavender essential oil – this is primarily for scent so you can replace with a different essential oil if you prefer or omit for unscented.
- Grapefruit essential oil – same as lavender in that you can replace with a different essential oil if you prefer a different scent or omit for fragrance free.
- Tea tree essential oil (optional)* – tea tree is antibacterial and a super effective odor-buster."

Our Homelands are Not for Sale: #Neskantaga #FirstNation Condemns #Canada 's Ring of Fire Investment Pitch
Ontario
As Prime Minister Carney courts global investors in Toronto, Canada is marketing mineral exploration in Treaty No. 9 while governments advance the roads needed to open the Ring of Fire without Neskantaga’s consent.
14 September 2026, 9:26pm EDT
Source: #NeskantagaFirstNation
#TorontoON - "Today, as Prime Minister #MarkCarney welcomes some of the world’s largest #investors to the Canada Investment Summit, Neskantaga First Nation is putting the Prime Minister, participating corporations and every investor in the room on notice: our homelands are not Canada’s to sell.
"The federal government’s investment prospectus lists #JunoCorp as an investment opportunity based on its extensive mineral claims in the #RingOfFire . It promotes the company’s fully funded $20-million exploration program, its gold and critical-mineral discoveries and its search for investors prepared to commit capital for more than a decade.
"Neskantaga wants the investors here in #Toronto today to know: Neskantaga will be meeting the #MiningIndustry on the land when the time comes. There is no certainty for Ring of Fire investments as long as our people are alive. We will defend our home and waters.
"Canada is presenting #ContestedLands in Treaty No. 9 as a long-term investment opportunity while Ontario accelerates construction of the Webequie Supply Road, the Marten Falls Community Access Road and the southern roads needed to reach the proposed Northern Road Link. These roads are being advanced before the Ring of Fire Regional Assessment is complete and without Neskantaga’s free, prior and informed consent.
The summit exposes what Neskantaga has said all along: these roads are not simply community-access projects. Together, they are the industrial corridor governments and mining companies need to open the so-called Ring of Fire to large-scale extraction. Canada and Ontario are using public money, regulatory approvals and political promotion to manufacture the appearance that this development is inevitable and to make it more attractive to private capital."

YIKES! Nothing in the news about this, however, this breach may have affected #CreditUnions !
#TruStage #Cyberattack Recovery Efforts and #Consumer Impact
Aug 26, 2026
"TruStage has been working to restore its operations following a cyberattack that occurred six weeks ago, affecting a significant portion of its technology infrastructure.
This attack has disrupted services across its credit union members and consumers, leading to issues like delayed insurance payments, inaccessible retirement funds, and complexities in processing life insurance claims. According to TruStage's Outage Tracker, core services such as GAP and mechanical-repair claims, premium payments, and annuity transactions remain impacted. The company is urging credit unions to continue gathering claims-related documentation for follow-up once systems are fully restored.
Consumer Concerns Amid Disruptions
Consumers have expressed frustration over these ongoing disruptions. Platforms like Reddit and Trustpilot are flooded with reports from individuals struggling to process life insurance claims, some of which have yet to be resolved, putting families in financial strain. Delays in claims for #FuneralExpenses and #DisabilityBenefits amplify the concerns of those affected. #CreditUnions, operating under these circumstances, face their own reputational challenges as they address member inquiries without direct control over the recovery process.
TruStage Recovery Efforts & Assurance
Despite the hurdles, TruStage assures stakeholders that recovery efforts are progressing. Chief Administrative Officer Greg Holman communicated that service operations are improving, with resumed call center operations and the reinstatement of monthly ACH consumer billing. Efforts to restore #retirement and wealth management services have seen most plan participants regaining access to their funds. Notably, no annuity or retirement plan assets were compromised."

Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous #WarProfiteers
The #mockumentary #LordsOfWar shows how #Pentagon money gets funneled into $20-million-plus paydays for #weapons company #CEOs — and their lavish lifestyles.
Ben Freeman, September 24 2026
"For the first time, the Pentagon budget topped $1 trillion, and private contractors now receive more than half of all the tax dollars flowing to the Pentagon.
"Few have profited from this privatization of the U.S. military more than the CEOs of Pentagon contractors.
"While these companies often advertise their work as supporting the troops, the fact is that many service members live in appalling housing conditions, while #MilitaryIndustrial contractors’ profits soar and their CEOs live in luxury.
"The lavish lifestyles of these CEOs is laid bare in the new mockumentary 'Lords of War,' co-produced by the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft and #TheIntercept, that lampoons an industry held aloft by hundreds of billions of public funds every year.
" 'Lords of War' connects exorbitant Pentagon spending to the luxury enjoyed by the CEOs of its top contractors. As the film notes, #LockheedMartin is regularly the largest recipient of Pentagon contracts, raking in $75 billion in revenue in 2025 — more than 72 percent of which came from the U.S. government.
"As 'Lords of War' 's faux real estate aficionado explains, Lockheed’s CEOs have used their $20-million-plus compensation packages to buy #Luxury RealEstate from the D.C. suburbs to the shores of Miami."

So, the only way to clean up an industrial site in a sensitive environmental area is ( #FerodoSite ) to build a datacenter? Ummm... Makes perfect sense!
'Terrifying' 101-acre #datacentre plans would be 'heartbreaking', campaigners warn
Liam Evans, BBC Wales, September 22, 2026
"A proposed data centre spanning 101 acres would have a 'heartbreaking' effect on the landscape and #wildlife, campaigners have warned.
"Developers want to build the new centre between #Caernarfon and #YFelinheli in #Gwynedd , saying it could create more than 900 jobs during construction and a further 200 permanent roles.
"But nearly 15,000 people signed a petition in opposition to the plans, with local campaigners saying the proposed development was too big and would lead to #NoisePollution and ruin the landscape.
"A spokesperson for #CanolfanDdataMenai said it would 'transform and revitalise the long-derelict' site and offer significant employment, with plans currently out for public consultation.
"Data centres are buildings full of powerful computers used to run digital services, from online banking to movie streaming.
"The UK government classifies them as critical national infrastructure and, according to recent Senedd research, 'most jobs in the UK' are now reliant on them.
"Planning documents show the proposed centre would include five main buildings for storing data with the highest of them standing at 30m (98ft).
"But campaigners have raised concerns about water usage, the effect on the environment and how many jobs would go to local residents.
"More than 100 people attended a public meeting on Saturday with many raising concerns.
"Among those opposing the plans is Emyr Davies, whose house lies not far from where the boundary of the site would be, should it be approved.
" 'Visually it would have a massive effect, not just for us here in Caernarfon but also in #Anglesey, and it would change the views of #Snowdonia forevermore,' he said."

Misled’ and ‘Strung Along’ by Trump, Financial Pain of Farmers Grows as Costs Continue to Skyrocket
“I think a lot of people expected that maybe the war would wrap up and the prices would go down some... then it just skyrocketed,” said one farmer of the cost of diesel.
Brad Reed
Sep 18, 2026
Excerpt: "Farmers across the US are speaking up about their struggles as President Donald Trump’s #IllegalWar with Iran and #TradeWar with Canada are taking a hammer to their finances.
"In an interview with CBS News published Thursday, North Carolina farmer Matt Bell revealed that 'I have never worried and stressed like I have the last year,' thanks to the soaring costs of fuel, fertilizer, and farm equipment, all of which have gotten more expensive thanks to Trump’s policies.
" 'The fertilizer, fuel, chemicals, seed, parts—you know, the whole nine yards,' said Bell, 'everything that we touch has gone up.'
"Bell, who voted for Trump, said he feels 'misled' and 'strung along' when it comes to the president’s rationale for attacking Iran without congressional authorization in February."

#SeaDragon populations decimated in ‘mind-blowing’ mass mortality event caused by #SouthAustralian #AlgalBloom
Thousands of #SeaDragons, #pipefishes and #seahorses have washed up along state’s coastline according to analysis of #CitizenScientist records
Petra Stock
Sat 19 Sep 2026
Excerpt: "Stefan Andrews, a marine biologist and co-founder of the Great Southern Reef Foundation, said the scale of the mortalities was 'mind blowing', especially for animals like sea dragons, which were rare to see and found in only a handful of locations along the coast.
More than 800 species have been affected in Australia’s first bloom of #KareniaCristata, a rare and toxic type of algae deadly to marine life.
"Surveys and reports were beginning to put numbers on the devastating toll, such as the catastrophic decline in #GiantCuttlefish this year, research made possible through the contributions of #CitizenScientists and divers.
" 'We saw so many people just step up and do their bit to report observations,' he said. 'Sometimes mortalities that wash up on the beach could have disappeared in a matter of hours. So to have all of this data and information that scientists can analyse deeply is so useful to get an understanding of what’s going on.' "

"Watson's view is that such examples highlight the need to change not just how we build, but the way in which we imagine the relationship between #nature and #infrastructure."
by Ben Dreith | 28 May 2026
Excerpt: "Ancient building technologies should inform the way we manage today's increased risk of flooding and drought, author and designer Julia Watson tells #Dezeen in this interview.
"Australian-born and trained as a landscape architect, Watson has spent the last two decades investigating traditional techniques for mitigating #infrastructure 's impact on the #environment.
"She argues the pursuit has only become more relevant with the proliferation of urban environments and the rapid growth of AI-related infrastructure – happening against a backdrop of increasing dangers posed by #ClimateChange ."

So, when I was a #Vegan, I didn't judge those who ate meat. Instead, I cooked for them and won them over. Now that I can't be vegan, I eat meat respectfully -- as always. Life feeds on life! #Plants and #fungi have feelings too! We should realize that whatever we consume from #Nature were/are alive and treat them as such! (Lab-grown stuff is probably alive too, but that's a whole other can of worms!) I've eaten insects, plants, milk from animals I've milked, flesh of those I've hunted or fished... I've grown soybeans, made my own tofu from scratch (not easy and takes a LOT of soybeans). Food is life. And life feeds on life. Whatever the form, it's best to be conscious of the sources, and what sacrifices were made to feed us. (Including insects, soil microbes, etc).

Scientists Warn of Emissions Risks from the Surge in #Satellites
With hundreds of satellites launched each year and tens of thousands more planned, scientists are increasingly concerned about an emerging problem: emissions from the fuels burned in launches and from the pollutants released when satellites and rocket stages flame out on reentry.
By Jon Gertner • December 2, 2025
Excerpt: "More recently, however, scientists have become alarmed by two other potential problems: the emissions from #RocketFuels, and the emissions from satellites and #RocketStages that mostly ablate (that is, burn up) on reentry. 'Both of these processes are producing #pollutants that are being injected into just about every layer of the atmosphere,' explains Eloise Marais, an atmospheric scientist at University College London, who compiles emissions data on launches and reentries.
"As Marais told me, it’s crucial to understand that #Starlink ’s satellites, as well as those of other commercial ventures, don’t stay up indefinitely. With a lifetime usefulness of about five years, they are regularly deorbited and replaced by others. The new satellite business thus has a cyclical quality: launch; deploy; deorbit; destroy. And then repeat.
"The cycle suggests we are using Earth’s mesosphere and stratosphere — the layers above the surface-hugging troposphere — as an incinerator dump for space machinery. Or as Jonathan MacDowell puts it: 'We are now in this regime where we are doing something new to the atmosphere that hasn’t been done before.' MacDowell and some of his colleagues seem to agree that we don’t yet understand how — or how much — the reentries and launches will alter the air. As a result, we’re unsure what the impacts may be to Earth’s weather, climate, and (ultimately) its inhabitants."

#HongKong 's #Tiananmen activists sentenced to up to seven years in prison
by Koh Ewe, September 11, 2026
"Three Hong Kong activists who organised annual vigils commemorating Beijing's 1989 crackdown on #TiananmenSquare protests have been handed prison sentences of up to seven years.
"Two of the defendants - Lee Cheuk-yan, 69, and Chow Hang-tung, 41 - were convicted last month of inciting others to subvert state power, under the city's controversial national security law.
"A third defendant, Albert Ho, 74, had pleaded guilty in January.
"For years, Hong Kong was one of the only places in Chinese territory where people could hold gatherings to mark the Tiananmen Square crackdown - a topic that is highly sensitive and heavily censored in mainland #China.
"These gatherings were banned by Hong Kong's authorities in 2020, citing Covid-19 policies, but never resumed. That same year, the national security law, which makes illegal a wider range of dissenting acts, officially came into force.
Authorities say the law is necessary to maintain stability, but critics argue it has eroded Hong Kong's autonomy and created a climate of fear.
"Lee, Chow and Ho were charged in 2021. They faced up to 10 years in prison after their conviction.
"On Friday, the court sentenced Lee to seven years in prison, while Chow was handed seven years and three months. Ho, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced to five years in prison.
"According to a court summary in August, Lee and Chow had 'incited other persons to organise, plan, commit or participate in acts by unlawful means with a view to subverting the state power', according to a summary on Friday.
"Chow told the court in May the law itself was on trial.
"Speaking to the BBC before her arrest in 2022, Chow said she was 'prepared to be arrested' and 'willing to pay the price for fighting for democracy'."

A #Michigan #NuclearPlant shut down for good is being switched back on for #AI power
Story by Everett Sloane, September 6, 2026
"A nuclear plant on the shore of Lake Michigan that shut down for good four years ago is now weeks or months away from producing electricity again, in what would be the first time in American history a retired commercial reactor has been brought back online. #Palisades #Nuclear Generating Station, in #CovertTownship, Michigan, ceased operating in 2022 after Entergy concluded it no longer made economic sense to keep running. Its new owner, #HoltecInternational, is now racing to restart it, betting that the same wave of electricity demand from artificial intelligence #datacenters reshaping the U.S. power grid can justify resurrecting a plant that was, until recently, on a path toward permanent teardown. The attempt is being closely watched across the utility industry because more than a dozen other reactors were permanently retired nationwide over the past decade, and each one is a potential candidate for the same kind of revival if Palisades proves it can be done safely and on budget."

#Solarpunk #Lagos - #ObohMoses
5 August 2026
"Oboh Moses is a Black digital illustrator who has been passionate about art since he was seven years old. In 2021, his work was selected for the American Illustration 40th anniversary annual award book. He lives and works in Lagos, #Nigeria.
This illustration depicts a lively neighborhood in Lagos, Nigeria, reimagined as a thriving solar-powered community. The scene captures an ordinary residential area transformed through the widespread adoption of #renewable energy, offering a glimpse of a future where clean, #sustainable power is part of everyday life.
At first glance, we see numerous solar panels installed on nearly every rooftop, children play football and run freely in the open spaces, residents gather on balconies and verandas to chat with neighbors, watch the activity below, or simply enjoying the day. reinforcing the close-knit nature of the community.
Beyond capturing daily life, this artwork tells the story of an energy transition. It shows how solar power can strengthen local communities by providing reliable electricity, reducing dependence on #FossilFuels and unstable grid power, lowering energy costs, and improving everyday life. Overall, the illustration celebrates a future where clean, renewable energy is accessible to everyone."

"I see the bad moon risin'
I see trouble on the way
I see earthquakes and lightnin'
I see bad times today
Don't go around tonight
Well, it's bound to take your life
There's a bad moon on the rise
I hear hurricanes a-blowin'
I know the end is comin' soon
I fear rivers overflowin'
I hear the voice of rage and ruin
Don't go around tonight
Well, it's bound to take your life
There's a bad moon on the rise
Alright
Hope you got your things together
Hope you are quite prepared to die
Looks like we're in for nasty weather
One eye is taken for an eye
Well, don't go around tonight
Well, it's bound to take your life
There's a bad moon on the rise

🎵 "Black hole star, there you are..." 🎶
Astronomers discover a brand-new type of astrophysical object: A black hole star
The mashup of a black hole and an enormous star has never been seen before and could explain the mysterious little red dots often found in deep-space images.
Jennifer Chu | MIT News
Publication Date: August 12, 2026
"Astronomers at MIT and elsewhere have spotted an extremely bright red spot in the early universe. The object resembles an enormous star, spanning the size of our solar system. But it also is putting out 100 billion times more energy than any known star can physically produce. In fact, such energies are closer to what a black hole might generate.
"The curious combination suggests that the red spot is an entirely new type of astrophysical source. The astronomers are calling it a 'black hole star.'
"In a paper appearing today in the journal Nature, the team presents their analysis of the new object, which they discovered using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The telescope spotted the bright red dot in the very early universe, just a few hundred million years after the Big Bang.
"The scientists conclude that the most likely explanation for the strange red dot is that it is a mashup of a black hole and a star — a combination that has never been observed until now. The object is likely a hugely dense cloud of gas, powered not by standard nuclear fusion, but by a central black hole."

‘ #Palestine Is Being Erased Before Our Eyes’: 100 Former French, British Diplomats Say End Weapons Sales, Trade With Israel
The abuses by the Israeli government and military are “a stain on the conscience of humanity, requiring the #UK and #France to act.”
Jon Queally, Aug 23, 2026
"While critics of the French and British governments say they are doing too little to confront the crimes and #HumanRights violations of #Israel against the #PalestinianPeople, about 100 former diplomats of the two nations penned an open letter published over the weekend agreeing that much stronger actions must be taken to end the atrocities taking place in both the Gaza Strip and the Occupied West Bank.
Published in Le Monde on Saturday, the joint op-ed by the former UK and French ambassadors and foreign diplomats argues that because their two nations 'played a decisive role in the shaping of the Middle East,' it is incumbent upon them to 'make common cause over the region’s fundamental faultline: equal rights for Israelis and #Palestinians' — a dynamic grossly lacking as Palestinians are starved and bombed in #Gaza, with their rights endlessly under assault in the #WestBank.
According to the letter:
- In Gaza, two million Palestinians are kettled into 30% of their devastated land, hungry, lacking medicine and housing. Over 1,200 Palestinians have been killed since the so-called 'ceasefire' of October 2025. In #EastJerusalem and the rest of the #WestBank, Palestinian house demolitions and rampant settler violence— with the connivance of the Israeli army and police—amount to ethnic cleansing. Palestine is being erased before our eyes.
- This policy of occupation and destruction extends to #Lebanon — where many villages have been razed — and Syria. It is a stain on the conscience of humanity, requiring the UK and France to act."

#UK, #Canada and #Australia condemn #Israel for refusing criminal probe into #AidWorker killings in #Gaza
Tinshui Yeung, 8/21/ 2026
"The UK, Canada and Australia have described as 'shameful' Israel's decision not to launch a criminal investigation into strikes on a #WorldCentralKitchen (#WCK) convoy in Gaza in 2024, which killed seven humanitarian workers.
"The victims were three British nationals, a Pole, an Australian, a Canadian and a dual US-Canadian citizen.
"A joint statement by the three foreign ministries said: 'The victims of this incident and their families deserve justice and accountability, and we will continue to seek answers on their behalf.'
"Earlier, Israel's ambassador to Australia, Hillel Newman, defended the decision, saying 'there was no criminal intention" and therefore "no criminal responsibility'.
"The statement said that on 1 April 2024, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) fired on the WCK convoy as it was delivering food to civilians in Gaza.
" 'In the more than two years since, we have been pressing for Israel to swiftly and thoroughly consider the case and hold those responsible to account,' it said.
"The three countries said the fact that Israel's announcement came on #WorldHumanitarianDay, 'while the world honoured the courage and sacrifice of humanitarians, was particularly egregious'.
"It also said the WCK attack was only 'one of countless incidents in Gaza where there has been no accountability', as Gaza remains 'the deadliest place to deliver aid', with 186 humanitarian workers killed in 2025.
"It urged Israel to comply with its obligations under international #humanitarian law and do more to ensure that humanitarian staff can carry out their work safely."

The #Mediterranean just achieved what experts called “statistically impossible”—here’s how it happened
August 20, 2026
"Water temperatures in the #MediterraneanSea are making even the most seasoned beachgoer do a double take. At the surface, temperatures have broken the 30°C mark (that’s 86°F for those reading in Fahrenheit) along the French coast and down past Spain—numbers more likely to top the charts at peak summer, not early summer. On average, the water hits its warmest point around August 18, typically about 26.1°C (79°F). But this year?
"Average sea surface temperatures for June 2025 have ranged from 3°C to 6°C (about 5 to 11°F) hotter than the norm for the period 1982–2023. These are the kinds of scorchers folks in the region usually brace for well after Bastille Day—if ever."

Well damn! Something has been nibbling on the vegetable plants at the #CommunityGarden. TBH, I think a deer figured out how to jump over the electric fence (though I did find the fence open a couple of times this month, so that could have just put out the "welcome mat"). I recall finding what looked like deer tracks near the pumpkin patch, where the green pumpkins on the outer edge all had huge chunks taken out of them.
In my plot, my mammoth sunflower was de-leaved pretty high up (deer), as well as some squash and bean plants. Luckily, they don't like my flowers, or the Nightshades, and seem to have left my plot neighbor's corn alone... For now...
I think we need a real fence around the garden. Sigh...

BREAKING NEWS🚨 - Press release from the #CenterForBiologicalDiversity
#Trump Moves to Kill #RoadlessRule in Biggest Assault on #ForestProtections in U.S. History
For Immediate Release, August 18, 2026
WASHINGTON — The Trump administration today proposed scrapping the country’s most significant tool for protecting national forests, a move that would open nearly 45 million acres of wild, unfragmented forest across 37 states to road construction, logging and other development.
“Trump is pushing for the largest evisceration of public lands protection in American history and against what Americans want,” said Randi Spivak, public lands policy director at the Center for Biological Diversity. “These are some of the last truly wild forests left in the country, places that shelter endangered wildlife and protect our drinking water. Once you start bulldozing roads for commercial logging and industrial development, there’s no getting them back. Americans love their public lands and want them protected. We’re going to fight like hell to safeguard these wild places for future generations.”
Today’s announcement from the U.S. Agriculture Department will be followed by Wednesday’s release of the draft environmental analysis, giving the public until Sept. 21 to comment on the proposed Roadless Rule recission.
Here are statements from the Center’s regional experts on risks to roadless forests and wildlife across the country:
Northern #Rockies
“Roadless forests are lifelines for grizzly bears and Canada lynx across the northern Rockies,” said Kristine Akland, Northern Rockies director. “Grizzlies need these areas to den and raise cubs and lynx populations are already declining as mature forest habitat disappears. Building roads and allowing logging in these wild areas would make an already difficult situation for these species even worse. People across the region know how vital these intact forests are for wildlife, clean water and recreation, and they overwhelmingly oppose dismantling the Roadless Rule.”
#Alaska
“We’ll fight Trump’s monstrous proposal to gut the Roadless Rule, which would be disastrous for the Tongass,” said Cooper Freeman, Alaska program director. “Punching roads through 9 million acres of intact temperate rainforest would destroy world-class salmon streams. It would open the door for corporations to clearcut irreplaceable, centuries-old Sitka spruce for export overseas. Alaska’s wild places deserve better.”
Southwest
“Roadless forests are where wildlife live,” said Taylor McKinnon, Southwest director. “They’re home to jaguars, Mexican spotted owls, and ocelots, some of the most iconic animals on the continent. Plowing roads into their habitat will bring human-caused wildfires and disturbances that they don’t need and can’t afford. We’ve fought for years to protect the forests and animals of the Southwest and there’s no way we’re giving up now.”
#Southeast
"Roadless areas protect the most beloved and endangered species in the Southeast,” said Will Harlan, Southeast program director. “The South Mills River harbors the country’s strongest hellbender population. Snowbird and Tusquitee Bald shelter endangered Carolina northern flying squirrels, gray bats and longsolid mussel. These forests sustain local economies, protect iconic recreation spots like the Appalachian Trail and safeguard drinking water for millions of people in Charlotte, Atlanta and beyond. Handing them over to loggers and construction crews isn’t sound policy, it’s a tragedy."
Why we need the Roadless Rule:
- Forests free of roads and logging provide crucial and connected habitat for animals and plants, protecting them from noise, pollution and other human-caused harms.
- The forests at risk — from Oregon to North Carolina — are home to scores of threatened and endangered species, including American wolverines, Canada lynx, grizzly bears and northern spotted owls. Rescinding the Roadless Rule would not only push these species closer to extinction but threaten countless others, including Alexander Archipelago wolves and Queen Charlotte goshawks.
- More than 370,000 miles of roads already fragment U.S. national forests, with a maintenance backlog in the billions of dollars. Most wildfires are human caused and occur near roads, with a decades-long, nationwide study finding human-caused wildfires are four times more likely in areas with roads than in roadless forests.
- National forests are the headwaters of many of the country’s major rivers and the largest source of municipal water supplies, serving more than 60 million people in 33 states. The Roadless Rule protects rivers and streams from roads, a major source of water pollution because of erosion and sediment.
