Most people who worked on the atom bomb and other heinous tools of destruction would later say they didn't know what they were building. That always smelled like bullshit to me until I started working on microservices.

2026-08-12 21:17:28 UTC

This is a nice personal take, but what it lacks IMO is that it leads to bad user outcomes. The video just below this post touches on it a peripherally using AWS as a example. But to me that's central.
If it wears you down and the software is higher quality that's one thing but now you've boiled an ocean for f'king nothing *and* you feel like shit at the end of the day.

Yet Another Toxic Effect of mandatory llm workflows is even when you have juniors they learn nothing.
If the slop came from a junior's brain it means they grappled with the problem and took a huge step forward in learning.
You work with that person to cut it down to something small and clean, the next time around they get better, everyone's a winner.
Now, zippo, nothing. Praise doesn't make sense and review is a farce.

There's still this long running myth that Haskell is slow to compile because of fancy types.
Haskell _is_ slow to compile but that's because it generates gigabytes of IR.
Don't believe me? Monitor your tmp folder during a compile cycle.
Still don't believe me? Have GHC do a dry run.
This has unfortunately lead to a ton of languages that proclaim fast compile times because of "simple" types which is at best a correlation when the real lesson is to keep generated code as tight as possible.

If the goal was really productivity CI times were there the whole time, same with compile times, ability to e2e test locally & a host of other things where devs sit & twiddle their thumbs for significant chunks of their day.
Addressing even 1 or 2 of these would add hundreds of thousands to the bottom line not just in saved cloud costs but actual increased velocity. Not to mention the org wide morale boost because honestly that sounds like a fun place to work.
The goal was never productivity.

This may or may not apply to Cloudflare but I've had the pleasure of debugging a couple of outages caused by 'unsafePerformIO' and 'read' in my time as a Haskell dev.
Not on the same scale as Cloudflare but the single biggest obstacle to getting up and running was a complete lack of stack traces. A fix that took seconds needed hours of frantic Debug.Trace + extremely slow build/deploy cycles.
IMO the root problem was a crappy runtime debugging environment not the use of footgun functions.

I find myself nodding along to articles like this because they make good points about programming environment bloat, and then the author throws out an insane number like Doom Emacs takes up 500MBs and "consumes many MBs of RAM".
