Random question (bc everyone seems to say it one way and maybe I’m just weird?):
How do you pronounce “poetry”?

#WritersCoffeeClub Oct 26 - How did you develop your voice?
I work my voice to fit the work, finding what feels right for this particular story that has its own tone, atmosphere, themes, MC…
It can be especially fun with 1st person narration, where the character telling the story may seem/be different from who they are/were within the story.
I’ve been writing for decades, but I’m always learning. Who knows, one day perhaps I’ll look back and see a singular voice. Hindsight, 20/20, etc.

One thing I truly loathed in my webdev days and later when simply managing our own CMS websites: suddenly having to drop everything and run security updates on several sites and/or servers. Core, modules, plugins, themes … The stress! The unexpected problems!
Finally it’d get done … until the next time. It never ends.
A few years ago, for my own health and sanity I migrated what we had to static sites and never looked back.
My heart goes out to everyone caught in today’s AARRRGGGH!

The fedi has always felt impermanent to me. I joined a few instances in 2017, loved it. Took a year or so away. Returned to 3 instances shut down, 1 unmaintained, & my acct on 1 deleted (for inactivity?). All that activity, friends, follows gone
1 remaining orig acct was on a great instance that later shut down
Some impermanence was self inflicted though. Some time ago I activated auto-delete on my less popular posts here. IDK why, just it made sense at the time. I regret that now
That’s all

#WritersCoffeeClub Sep 11 - What's a part of your process you'd give free advertising to?
Scrivener is my word processor: lightweight editor; ability to shuffle parts around; easy-to-manage styles. (It’s not great for exchanging drafts with an editor; I tolerate Word for that. Nor do I use it to compile publishing formats.)

As a publisher, one app I treasure is Sigil, a free open source ePub code editor, and its community-developed plugins.

“coding has never really been a big problem. The places where there are problems are in like testing. How do you know that this piece of software actually does what you need it to do? That's a really really difficult problem… everything I've seen about AI tools just is that they just make hard problem worse” https://kolektiva.social/@firstprimate/117221880538219180

#ScribesAndMakers 7 Is there a work of art that you didn't like at first but came to appreciate once you understood it better?
When The Fifth Element came out, I was used to different SF movies, I was expecting this one to be like those. And in many ways it was. And at the time, I laughed at Chris Tucker’s performance but kinda felt it didn’t fit. I was so wrong.
Chris Tucker’s Ruby Rhod is my favorite part of the movie.

In a scene today, MC unexpectedly rage screamed at the alien with sharp teeth and prehensile tongue, and writing it felt oddly cathartic. Still reflecting on that. (It wasn’t cathartic for her, but oh that’s coming, that’s what the whole story is about.)

19y ago today I joined Twitter and spent months fascinated by how the feed went by faster than you could keep up, so unlike forums, blogs, LJ etc. For years it was great, weird, informative, newsy, though horrible at times…
Over time “actually” culture became gotcha culture. Trolling fed by bots grew dominant. I blocked & blocked (eventually >100k accounts). Not fun. I posted less, then stopped, then disabled my account, then just deleted it in disgust
But those early years bring fond memories

The ghost couldn’t knock so it waited for the children dressed as goblins, vampires, witches and politicians to ring the bell. The door opened. “Trick or treat!”
“So adorable!” said a lady in skeleton makeup. As she gave them candy, the ghost stepped inside and was greeted by other ghosts.
“Thank you!” said the children. The door closed. The lady sat down and looked her phone. The ghosts gathered ’round and watched the news scroll by and cried and cried and cried.
