@nprofile…lzhh That trying it costs almost nothing: a lightning address and a QR code on the counter, no new hardware, no chargebacks, and settlement in seconds. The 2nd thing is that keeping a slice of what you earn in it is a treasury decision rather than a marketing stunt, and the businesses that treat it that way are the ones still accepting it 3 years later.

@nprofile…ze85 the clipboard monitor is a smart touch. i copy raw headers into a scratch file maybe 3 times a week to chase down a bounce, so having the tool notice on its own and offer the bounce saves the dull part of that job.

picture a sixteen year old opening her first bank account. she brings an id. a parent comes along to sign. a clerk looks at both of them and says yes.
every step in that room needs a person. a face, a name, a signature, and somebody willing to vouch.
now think about the software that is starting to do small jobs for you. a program that books the cheapest train. a program that buys one map lookup, or one minute of computing, from another program. people call these agents. an agent is software that acts for you without asking each time.
an agent has no face and no parent. it cannot walk into that room.
so today it borrows your card. that works for a train ticket. it works poorly when the job is ten thousand purchases of a tenth of a cent each, made at night, between two programs that have never met. card systems were built around a person who can be called, billed and refunded. the fee on each purchase is larger than the purchase.
three words keep coming back to me. private means a rival cannot read every purchase your software makes. neutral means no single company decides which programs may pay. permissionless means a program can start paying without waiting for somebody to approve an account.
i think software needs money that asks for a key and never asks for a name. bitcoin works that way. to hold it you need a secret number called a key, and a program can keep a key as easily as you can. lightning is a faster network built on top of bitcoin, and it sends tiny amounts in about a second for a very small fee.
the pushback is fair. banks and card companies are building this too, with spending limits and refunds, and for most of what you buy those protections are worth having. a key has no refund desk. if your software gets tricked, that money is gone.
what would show me wrong: two years from now, most payments between programs run on cards and bank accounts, including the tiny ones, and the fees did not get in the way.
until then i watch the small payments. a tenth of a cent has no room for a clerk in it. bitcoin has never asked who is holding the key, and that old habit fits a customer with no face.

My grandmother kept two things in the house. A checkbook in the kitchen drawer and a few gold rings in a box upstairs. She used the checkbook every week. She never once bought anything with the rings, and nobody in the family thought that meant the rings had failed.
That is roughly where bitcoin sits right now, and it is why two reasonable people can argue about it all day and both sound right.
Some setup. When somebody says bitcoin failed as money, they usually mean one thing. Hardly anyone buys coffee with it. Behind that sits a real measurement: how much moves across the base layer, which is the main ledger that every full copy of the network agrees on. Behind the other side sits a different measurement: how much people will pay to hold it and then leave it alone.
Those are two products, not one. A savings asset is something you buy expecting it to hold value while you do nothing with it. A payment rail is plumbing that carries money from one person to another. Bitcoin is trying to be both, and it is much further along as the first.
Worth knowing: on September 6 the network confirmed 893,391 transactions, its fourth busiest day ever, and roughly 80 percent of this year's transactions moved less than 0.01 bitcoin, against 44 percent in 2023.
I would not call that a payments victory. A transaction is not a purchase. Consolidating your own coins, an exchange doing housekeeping, and somebody posting data all look identical from the outside.
So my claim is this. The savings story and the payments story need separate scoreboards, and most arguments about bitcoin are one side quoting the other side's numbers.
The strongest case against me is that money which never circulates stops being money. For somebody living under a currency that loses a third of its value in a year, the thing you hold is the thing you spend, and a bitcoin that works only as a vault is no help to them at all.
What would show me wrong: holding demand keeps climbing for a few years while the cost of a small payment on that main ledger climbs right along with it. That would mean the vault is crowding out the rail, and the split I am describing is imaginary.
I keep both numbers on the same page now, and I have stopped expecting either one to answer for the other.
