Anyone got any experience around registered trademarks for open source projects and would be willing to give me a little advice on defending one, without me having to get lawyers involved?

probably right, tbh, it's almost certainly not *really* due to the test framework. I'm sure it's entirely possible to write awful test suites in both.
It's maybe that the RSpec style is a generally neater in how it's presented and documented, which makes a difference when learning what a good test looks like and nudges people that way.
Or maybe I'm just too used to my own testing style. Probably that one, tbh 🤷‍♂️

2026-09-29 15:46:38 UTC

After two days of fiddling around getting @npub1pam…c0c5 tests working, I maintain my position that `minitest` is a goddamn mess and that `rspec` is superior by far.

With the Rails 8.2 release (probably) imminent, work is about to ramp up on @npub1pam…c0c5, the fork we've been laying the groundwork for.
If you want to reduce the impact of the "weird guys" on Rails, Ruby and OSS in general, we need your help!
This is ESPECIALLY true if you're a member of a community marginalized by the far-right rhetoric that comes from Rails' founder. This fork can't be led by the usual white male voices (e.g. me), we need *much* more diverse leadership.

I mean, find me a single American tech organisation that *isn’t* full of right wing libertarians.
That’s the secret lurking in open source - it’s actually a weird combo of gun-toting anti-government survivalists and radical progressives* who have managed for years to share some similar goals because politics wasn’t mentioned. But then software ate the world; software *is* politics, and vice versa.

This morning in #Amiko, the community #RailsFork:
1. 138 people now in the Matrix space at https://matrix.to/#/#amiko:matrix.org
2. We've had success in running some **major** #Rails apps on experimental forked versions of both `rails` and `railties`, and at running our equivalent of `rails new`.
3. We're building community governance using Sociocracy: https://sociocracy30.org/
4. Work progresses on website, brand, and determining a non-placeholder name
This *is* happening, and we need YOU!

Some updates and stats for #Amiko (#Rails fork):
~650 boosts for the “this is happening” post. That’s *huge* numbers for the Fediverse, in my experience.
98 people in the matrix space as of right now. Should break 100 shortly.
Code exploration has started, we’re working out how to do this.
If you run a podcast or tech news blog, I’m happy to talk to you about all this, DM me.
We need your help, *especially* if you’ve ever been involved in Rails internals.

"Voters have a choice between decency or division, Starmer to tell Labour conference"
Maybe he could try pursuing a bit less division and more decency then?

In the original No2ID days, I didn't used to be opposed to having a secure identity proof signed by govt, I was just opposed to the centralisation and databases.
But now, with the spectre of fascism rising, I see that even a distributed proof-of-entitlement ID without any central servers would be a vector for abuse and exclusion.
So, yeah, I've changed my mind on that one. I wasn't paranoid enough.

So far though, my experience has been that there are many more negative responses than positive. Maybe the Ruby community isn’t the place I thought it was, and MINASWAN was always a lie. That makes me sad. 😢

Ooh, woken up to a few angry PRs this morning on https://github.com/Plan-Vert/open-letter.
Looks like it’s pissing off the right people, given their comments. Nice thing about doing this on GitHub is that they’re all out there in public.

quite right, it’s long overdue that the entire community ostracised DHH before Ruby becomes a nazi bar.
I’m collecting signatures on this open letter, perhaps you’d like to add yours or share onwards? https://github.com/Floppy/plan-vert-letter

Calling all #Ruby on #Rails users, I eagerly await your PR signatures on this open letter to the Rails Core team, in which we call for a hard fork and adoption of a proper Code of Conduct, away from #DHH.

#Rails folks, here's an open letter asking the Rails Core to cut ties with DHH and hard fork Rails to a new project with proper governance.
You can sign with a pull request. Let's show that there's demand for this, and that the community won't appease racists.

(boosts and cross-posts to other places are appreciated!)

I doubt this will go anywhere, but...

2025-09-16 11:23:55 UTC

I have *no* time to do this, but serious question, who would actually be up for using or helping with a community-driven hard fork of #Rails? I doubt the #RailsFoundation will do anything, TBH. Can we show some willing? Boosts welcome for wide community input.

ooh, yes, I remember seeing this! It’s for @npub1wfk…zv38, so yeah.
While we’re in the area, do you know of any fedi system that does secure sharing between actors on different servers? Say someone bought a model from one Manyfold server, could access be granted to their federated identity somehow? Does anyone do that?

Is there an open standard out there for payment provider integration? Like OAuth for stripe/paypal/etc
