This October I’m writing a series of articles about the history of witches and wizards in Cornwall. In this article I explore the profession of the Pellar and share some of the charms and spells they used.

#FediCoven Within the context of your practice, who are your ancestors?
The ones who came before who come forward to share their wisdom. Family ancestry is not my sole focus. I'm childless by choice. The lineage through blood will end with me, but there are other connections we can make.

There are few arts as ancient as the role of the storyteller. Words committed to memory for the purpose of keeping the old tales alive, to educate and, of course, to entertain.
In Cornwall, these people are called the droll tellers.

FediCoven Q6: What relationship do you have with the moon and its phases, and how does that show up in your craft?
I like to meditate and tap into the rhythm of the lunar cycle (as well as the solar cycle and my own monthly cycle). Outward/active went waxing, inward/introvet when waning.
I’ve been researching mermaids and they’re depicted with a comb and mirror. But I was reading a suggestion the circular mirror is in fact a moon as it governs the tides. Now I want to meditate on this theory.

@nprofile…cm0q if you’re looking to lose weight, diet is the best way to go about it. Scientists have shown we burn the same number of calories in a desk job as we would if we were hunter-gatherers in Tanzania. Yes, exercise is great for building strength, muscle mass and mental health, but diet is key for weight loss.
I’m not a fan of gyms and it’s a sensory mess and full of people sat looking at their phones and hogging machines. Much prefer walking/running and body weight exercises.

@nprofile…cm0q I hate Duolingo with a passion because it’s such a rubbish way of learning and so US-centric. I popped on it to see how much Spanish I could remember and the only sports it translates were Basketball, Baseball, and American Football, and all the food options were American junk food (or rice and beans for the Mexicans).
I wonder if there are any good podcasts as I was listening to one for learning Cornish and that was more useful (I can grumble it’s too hot and order a pint).

Strange is the power of fictional storytelling in that the public outcry deemed we’re not allow to destroy the empty grave of a fictitious character of a species from fictitious folklore. But we’re absolutely fine to dig up real graves containing the remains of real people.

#ScribesAndMakers What book are you currently reading, or have you finished most recently?
Most recent: Tom Holt - Who’s Afraid of Beowulf? - a burial ship full of Vikings wake from a centuries long sleep and continue their quest to defeat a sorcerer king - very funny, dated to the ‘80s.
Current: MW Craven - The Puppet Show - award winning crime novel. A serial killer burning people alive in Cumbrian stone circles. 60 pages in and it’ll be a DNF because it’s badly written and full of cliches.

#WritersCoffeeClub Is there something you want to write, but don't think you yet have the skill?
A historical fiction trilogy on the life of Æthelflæd (although I’d be keen to continue it with an alternative history where she is the first monarch of England).
Unless I kidnap Michael Wood, I don’t think I have the knowledge to do the history justice.

If there was a character who didn’t require a prequel to delve into their backstory, it’s Ebenezer Scrooge.
But it seems we’re getting a prequel film anyway. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Which other characters don’t need a prequel film but Hollywood will probably milk and make one?

Being unemployed and seemingly unemployable despite skills and experience doesn’t help either.

I never understood the gamification of reading. You read to be informed, educated, enlightened, entertained, to empathise, to laugh and/or cry.
Gamification takes the focus away from the subject being read and hones it instead on the page numbers, the number of books read and the speed. It causes anxiety in the reader if they're not hitting their intended target, or gives them something to boast about if they do.
Books are meant to be savoured. Not binged like ultra-processed food.

#WritersCoffeeClub What is the greatest pleasure of your writerly life?
I’m never bored or alone. There is always an idea or a character wittering on even when I’m idle. I can shut myself away and not see or speak to anyone or do anything, but mentally, I’m with a host of characters going off on wild adventures.

2026-06-09 17:08:38 UTC

Person punches another person.

#ScribesAndMakers What's something you consider creative that other people might not?
I remind myself to see the creativity in the mundane. The idle doodles while on hold. My choice of outfit and hairstyle. How I phrase an email. The savoury experience of cooking a meal from scratch.
Influencers like to big up about being creative every single day. My alternative suggestion is we rediscover and reconnect with the mundane, daily creativity we have become numb to.

@nprofile…n2fr I see a lot of people coming to this conclusion. I think in some instances you could take the basic premises of a story and transfer it into a number of different genres. But that is up to the writer. My present WIP had a few potential routes it could have gone, but ultimately I went with what I was drawn to. Equally, I've read novels with a great premise and felt disappointed by the direction chosen by the writer. But that's because we're all different.

@nprofile…srdh look at the etymology of real place names. They tend to translate to “Dave’s farm” or “The church on the hill”. It’s basic say what you see.
Derby - village of the deer
York - wild boar town
Exeter - fortress on the river Exe
Manchester - breast town (seriously)
Depending on the fantasy story, I either keep it simple and say what I see: ‘Dave’s fortress’ or I make up words for basic landmarks to give a sense of history and language: ‘Davesburgh”.

2026-05-07 05:40:41 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers When did you think of the idea for your current project? Do you remember how it came about?
It was during the long process of getting my hearing checked out on the NHS because I had some midrange hearing loss. I played a writing prompt on bluesky which sparked the question: what would the relationship between a siren and a deaf person be like?
The idea incubated, and I ended up deciding to set it in 19th century Cornwall using local sea folklore rather than Greek.

I have had experiences where the questioner cannot believe I chose not to have children, and they try and get me to reveal what gynaecological issue I am keeping secret which is causing my infertility! I had that happen at a party, and this person wanted me to tell everyone there because she said I could trust them all. I just repeated I didn’t want children when I really should have called the lot of them out and left. 🙄

@nprofile…n93w I appreciative stories where romantic couplings do not result in biological children. This is why I prefer writing/reading about deep friendships, platonic relationships and found family because they're more relatable and rewarding for me.

#ScribesAndMakers What's something you've learned in recent research?
My current WIP is set in Cornwall in the 1830s. As one main character has brown skin, I went and researched the non-white communities which could be found in the county at the time.
I discovered stories of stowaways on ships from the Americas escaping slavery making their home in Cornwall. But my favourite is Joseph Antonio Emidy, a slave and later Royal Navy fiddler who became a celebrated violinist in Cornwall.

@nprofile…n93w I don’t see the point in detailed descriptions unless the plot requires it. I have an image of the character in my head, but I would rather let the reader imagine them however they wish to. I don’t want to accidentally include stereotypes either such as beauty = goodness.

2026-04-09 10:08:32 UTC

Favourite way to introduce a character's appearance.
In a way that:
- tells the reader something about the character's personality
- tells the reader something about the personality of the POV character who's describing them
- invokes an emotional response in the reader (ie do they feel settled/wary about this character)
- is relevant to the plot
I do light touch descriptions when it comes to appearances and let the read flesh the rest out.

#ScribesAndMakers How do you answer if someone asks you what you do? Is your answer different in person than it is online?
First, people rarely talk to me.
Second, it almost always refers to work that I’m paid for rather than work that I love. This is also usually followed with, ‘Do you have children?’
Being unemployed and childless means I’m generally perceived as a freak.

It is a time of balance and renewal. Of running hares and newly hatched life.
The hare is a symbol of the moon, for the hare has a gestation period of 28 days. The Cosmic Egg is an ancient myth where all life began. Cakes have been baked for thousands of years with crosses upon them, representing the four quarters of the moon and offered to the moon goddesses.

When UK weather presenters say, ‘It’s generally going to be a dry day.’ They actually mean, ‘It’s going to rain in N.I, Scotland, Wales, and Cornwall.’

@nprofile…ayk9 if you ask me, a lot of romantic songs are full of relationship red flags.
And then there are songs which people misinterpret as love songs. Like Sting’s ‘Every Breath You Take.’

@nprofile…zshf if only we had snow where I live. But I have lichen growing over rocks which make fantastic map shapes.
Failing that (ie when I want to stay indoors where it’s warm and dry) I make maps from tea leaves.

@nprofile…mwjf Got to love Kate Bush.
I waste tempted to play one of her weirder lyrics, like, ‘Bang! There goes another kanga on the bonnet of the van.’ But I’m rereading Wuthering Heights so this song is my ear worm until I finish it.

#ScribesAndMakers Share a single line from a song you like. Ask people to identify the song.
You had a temper like my jealousy,
Too hot, too greedy.

They fell the venerable oak at midnight, claiming a wedge as a souvenir. Back inside, they await the public outcry, scrolling between the news and social media.
One checks their photos recording their deed, and flinches.
A shadowy group of women stand within the fallen branches.
‘They hanged witches in that tree,’ smirks his accomplice.
He swipes. The women move closer, staring into the lens.
A noise makes him turn. He photographs the empty space, and stares at the screen.

This week’s #SundayLit prompt is a little different.
I’d like you to share a short story (max. 100ish words). You have free rein on the content, but for those who require a prompt to get going, it is “Winter night”.
I’ll also post discussion Qs on the theme of short stories during Sunday under the #SundayLitQ tag.
I look forward to reading your work!

#WritersCoffeeClub What’s a no-longer popular trend in writing you’d like to see make a comeback?
Omniscient POV. It’s a style I see more in classical works. I do like first and close third POV, but it is nice to not be stuck in a character’s brain and body all the time.
And novels which open with good prose that sets the mood and character which draws you in rather than a big, loud hooky hook.

@nprofile…m8jv some newspaper research yesterday had me finding stuff from anti vaxers in the late 19th century. We haven’t changed much.

@nprofile…m8jv I tell anyone that uses it that they need to ask it questions on a subject they know deeply to see how flawed it is.

I was dipping into historical newspapers for book research, but I came across this article just below the one I researched about an anti-vaxer from 1876 in Devon.
The anti-vaxer was forced to pay a fine because he refused to vaccinate his child. The usual arguments of complications is at the heart, but additionally, reasoning back then is there was a concern the vaccination would impart the nature of the cow into the child.

3rd person subjective omniscient is certainly doable and enjoyable (Dune springs to mind), but the writer needs to avoid slipping into individual character voices and stick to the anonymous narrative voice to avoid the head jumping sensation.

#SundayLit Prompt: Games
What were once means to practice for warfare have turned into sporting games played by royalty and rich lords. The game they play is basically fantasy polo.
However, war looms and the king's sport has now gone back to its roots.
Dag, who is a foreigner in this land, doesn't understand this switching of war into games.
What do you think?
