We actually have a design now specifically to track user's UX/UI feedback, complaints, and suggestions: https://gitlab.gnome.org/Teams/GIMP/Design/gimp-ux/-/work_items
We also highlight UX/UI work done in our news updates, to encourage more designers to get involved. But I'll admit it's an uphill climb to convince people that we care about this. I think we're making progress though!

A very cool thing - not done by me, though I helped a bit in review.
Ryan McDonald implemented non-destructive text transforms! You can now apply standard 2D transforms (scale, rotate, etc) and still edit the text afterwards. Now all our vector-type layers can be transformed non-destructively!
Now I need to update a few of our vector export plug-ins like SVG and PDF to support exporting text with transforms. :)

We do (https://gitlab.gnome.org/Teams/GIMP/Design/gimp-ux/-/work_items), and they're great!
But coming up with the initial one is always tricky for me. I want to give them something halfway coherent to review. :)
The shape tool right now is fairly basic - I think they just want it to have all the Inkscape features, haha!

Heh!
I've been working on a shape tool which has been fun, and now I'm at the "design a UI" phase which I dread.
(Most of the feedback has been "Make it look like Inkscape!", of course)

Congrats on all the work thus far!
I actually find UI development to be quite stressful, so I think our ideas of "breaks" are a bit different. :)

And I understand that design work is not the same as patching code or incrementally adding features.
However, to attract people willing to do larger reviews and redesign work, we need to show them that their work actually matters, is valued, and will be implemented. Promoting the "small" work both improves GIMP right now, and demonstrates that putting in the time/effort for the big stuff is worthwhile. Still work to do there, but we're making progress I think.

We have in fact created a dedicated site for people to report UX issues, provide feedback, and discuss solutions that we then implement as we're able: https://gitlab.gnome.org/Teams/GIMP/Design/gimp-ux/-/work_items
We also now have a dedicated "UX/UI Improvements" section in our release post to promote this effort and highlight work by designers.
I won't say it's perfect, but I think we're gradually convincing people we want to improve in that area, and welcome their help.

I'm not sure what "lose" means here. We don't sell GIMP so there's no money lost, and if someone has already decided they don't like the interface, then it's great that they have an option that works better for them (as they already do with Affinity, Krita, etc).

Latest Shape Tool updates:
It's now multi-layer aware when drawing destructively. You can select multiple layers/masks/channels and draw the same shape on each one all at once.
There's now a Spiral shape type!
The GUI is starting to take shape (ha!). It still needs review and feedback by designers, but it's looking more organized and less like I slapped it together as I added features. :)

2026-10-07 03:53:42 UTC

More progress on the shape tool. Now you can draw polygons and stars - with the power of MATH!
There's also an option to change the stroke width, though I realize the label is currently missing. Easy to fix as I keep working on this.

I started developing a Shape tool WIP earlier this year, but paused it when a new contributor expressed interest in developing it.
Since that never materialized, I decided to update my in-progress code with some new things I've learned since - like how to show a preview on the canvas as you drag to move the shape!
Still plenty to do to get it ready to use, but it's beginning to look like an actual feature now. :)

With help and test images from @npub1l4n…0dd6, we now have a functional [Camera RAW import] fallback plug-in as a dev branch!
Right now it just imports the image with some default values. We'll see if it makes sense to provide some GUI options on import (though again, this is just a fallback - using the existing #darktable, #rawtherapee, or #ART plug-ins would be better for more control!)

2026-09-20 18:49:34 UTC

I've started tinkering with libraw to potentially add a native "fallback" Camera RAW importer for GIMP. We'll still strongly encourage using the #darktable, #rawtherapee, and #ART plug-ins for more powerful editing, but this potential feature will allow for quick-and-dirty edits if need be.
For those who use Camera RAW, would there be any import options you'd expect/want when opening a Camera RAW image via the fallback plug-in?

Yeah, it's always possible. Just yesterday someone spammed several GIMP merge requests (and apparently a bunch of GNOME apps as well) with AI-generated merge requests.
GNOME apparently deleted their entire GitLab account in response. I'd never seen a merge request completely completely disappear before!

Hi! Can you share what commit in GIMP is AI-generated? We have an actual policy not to accept those (which is shown whenever someone makes a merge request), so if one snuck in we're happy to look at it.
Also, there is a port of XSane for GIMP 3. https://yingtongli.me/git/gimp-xsanecli
There's a discussion about it here: https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-Gimp-3-x-scanner-xsane-plugin-is-now-available

As a follow-up to https://fosstodon.org/@CmykStudent/117032759794405478, the stroke/fill properties for PSD vector layers are now imported as well!
(I actually discovered a small bug in our public API while working on this, so fixing that was a bonus)

Yep, I learned about the Y position flip during testing - I was a bit surprised that Inkscape operated in Quadrent I. :)
Do you find some people prefer older versions of Inkscape? We have users who stick with GIMP 2.10 and even 2.8 because of certain changes, so if that's the case with Inkscape, at least it'll help them.
Good luck with eSVG! I'll be interested in learning more about that and hopefully adding support in GIMP's SVG export.

2026-08-07 10:26:43 UTC

A screenshot from :inkscape: #Inkscape this time! I'm updating our SVG export to include guides if you select the "Inkscape SVG" option, so those will be carried over if you reopen the project for further editing.
The Inkscape <sodipodi:namedview> tag has attributes for several other features shared by GIMP and Inkscape, so I'm hoping to expand this further!

More PSD compatibility work - adding support for importing vector layers. Step 1 was loading the paths for the layers (which are stored separately from the image-level paths we already loaded). That code's now merged.
Next will be reading in the vector stroke/fill settings from the descriptors, which is now possible after Jacob Boerema's work.
It'll also be the first use of the public vector layer API for imports, so hopefully it'll be a good reference for plug-in developers too!

2026-07-14 17:35:42 UTC

Jacob Boerema's work on PSD Descriptors is the gift that keeps on giving. Thanks to it, I was able to add initial support for importing PSD text as editable text layers!
This was first requested in issue report 94, back in 2004(!). It's also marked as a "Newcomer" issue, which it decidely was *not* before Jacob's work on Descriptors.
There's still plenty to improve, but I think this update will be really helpful for people working with PSDs.

Recently I've been transcribing interviews with free software artists that @npub1wvm…5rdg conducted years ago.
It's really cool to hear about artistic workflows and how people are using GIMP as part of theirs. It's also neat to hear about it being used with other libre software such as Inkscape, Scribus, Krita, MyPaint, and Blender!

2026-07-04 16:10:35 UTC

I've restarted work on implementing vector masks in GIMP (which I began towards the end of 3.2's development).
As part of the updates, the layer mask invert option now works and cuts out anything *inside* the path area.
You can also use non-destructive filters on layer masks, which allows you to smooth out the edges a bit.
Still some work to do, but it's coming along nicely. :)

2026-07-02 18:25:51 UTC

I did a quick test implementation of adding horizontal docks to GIMP's layout. The code itself was very simple. The necessary UI/UX work, not so much. :)
Something I might explore further a little later in 3.3's development cycle (unless someone else is interested in doing it of course!)

2026-06-25 12:18:34 UTC

I'd been planning to add import support for :krita: Krita's KPL palettes for a while, ever since we added export support in GIMP 3.2.
I finally did it, and it turned out to be very similar to our Swatchbooker code (both formats are zipped XML files). Hopefully this'll make it easier for people who use both programs to share settings in-between them!

This time it's not my work - but someone implementing one of *my* feature requests!
When I worked on porting GIMP to the v2 MyPaint Brush API, I didn't implement the optional Spectral Blending feature. If turned on, the blending mimicks "real world" pigment mixing - so for instance, painting yellow on blue creates a green color around the edges instead of grey-ish yellow.
I posted a feature request, and a new contributor took me up on it. See the video for a quick demo of how it works!

I believe it already has - we have some active design volunteers who have really contributed to implementing better UX going forward and pointing out existing improvements.
There's some "bigger" design work going on too which we hope to implement as it is finalized, but a lot of papercut UX issues (and larger) are being corrected already. :)

We're trying to change that - we now have a UX design site where we track UX issues, request user feedback, and try to make more thoughtful design decisions after discussion and testing.
If you're interested in contributing your thoughts (or just want to see the reported issues thus far), more information is here: https://gitlab.gnome.org/Teams/GIMP/Design/gimp-ux/-/work_items
We're also starting to document design decisions for future review: https://testing.developer.gimp.org/core/specifications/

I came across a #TheCuttingRoomFloor article about a game asset in the Nintendo 3DS Camera being edited in GIMP (https://tcrf.net/Nintendo_3DS_Camera#Test_Photo).
Really cool!
...Except that we don't have native support for MPO images...
Seeking to correct this travesty, I tracked down a third party 2.0 plug-in that may have been used for the editing and ported it to GIMP 3.2. :)
There's more sophisticated approaches that use APP2 markers, but their work is a good starting point for import support.

Another project I didn't quite get finished for GIMP 3.2 was non-destructive filters on layer masks.
The limit itself was easily removed - the challenge was making a good interface for editing filters on both the layer and its mask.
My first version used tabs, but [@aka_reju](https://mastodon.social/@aka_reju ) suggested I show both groups of filters on the same screen. The video shows a demo of how this works. Once I get it finished and update the merge request, we'll see what people think of it!

Went back to my local NDE Gradient filter branch and actually got it working! Previously you could toggle the visibility of gradient filters, now they're fully editable.
We got a number of requests for the Gradient tool to be non-desturctive, so I'm glad that that's pretty close to happening now!

I'm currently working on the less exciting parts of CMYK mode (changing all the layer mode internals to stop assuming everything is RGBA), so not a lot of visuals to share at the moment.
We did recently merge import support for Paintshop Pro adjustment layers though! They're converted in layer groups with NDE filters placed on them. It's based on in-progress work to do the same for PSD imports. More work to do of course, but it's another neat import support improvement!

I've put together a test AppImage for work-in-progress CMYK mode in GIMP. If you're interested in trying it out, you can get it here: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/merge_requests/2379#note_2750929
While it's functional, note this is very much a "help me start finding the bugs and unimplemented areas to work on" kind of thing, not a "this is 100% ready for production!!!" :)

2026-04-26 17:50:34 UTC

GTK is increasingly moving away from icons in the menubar, and when we finished the port to GTK3 we lost them in GIMP as well.
This was a controversial change - some people prefer the cleaner interface, while others (like myself) find the icons helpful for identification.
Fortunately, I finally figured out how to restore the icons! It still needs some clean-up to remove the excess spacine, but it works. I submitted it for review and discussion, so we'll see what's decided.

More in-progress file format support!
I've had the source code for the CinePaint Cineon and DPX import plug-in sitting in my TODO folder for a while. Finally took some time to port them to GIMP 3 (which is kind of funny since CinePaint was a fork of GIMP!)
The original plug-ins only supported 10bit precision, which is a bit limited. I hacked in 16bit support for DPX, but more work needs to be done before it's ready to merge. Still, it's cool to be able to load movie frames in GIMP. :)

*Very* early work, but proof-of-concept for a #GIMP shape tool. :)
I plan to add an option for merging the shape down immediately (destructive workflow) as well as fill/stroke settings in the tool itself.
I also think we'll need to add a way to save & load shapes like we do with brushes (default shapes + custom ones you want to add).
We'll see what people think once I have something ready for a draft merge request.

In our April Fool's post I joked about implementing a 1-bit color mode, so it's fitting the first new file format import support I'd work on would be 1-bit as well!
MacPaint was released in 1984 on the first Macintosh PC. As you can see, it was black and white only - a neat historical format. The plug-in still needs some polish and error-handling, but it works well on my test images so far.

We dropped 32bit Windows support in GIMP 3.2.2. Unfortunately, this meant also losing our 32bit-only TWAIN scanner plug-in.
Since the release, there've been several user reports asking where the scanning feature went. I decided to dive into the 64bit Windows Image Acquistion (WIA) API to see if I could make a new scanning plug-in.
After some struggles dealing with the sparse documentation, I finally have a proof of concept! Hopefully we can get it polished up and restore scanning on Windows.

I've started a small experiment to see how difficult it would be to port our file chooser dialogues to "native" versions (GtkFileChooserNative). This would mean you'd get your OS specific one when opening/saving a file, rather than the current GIMP default.
So far, I can see that most of our dialogues can be trivally ported (like the QBist plug-in, screenshot from Bruno Lopes).
Unfortunately, the main image export dialogue will require a full UI redesign. More to do after GIMP 3.2!

While non-destructive filters are a cool addition to GIMP, they're also somewhat confusing for people use to the 2.10.
We included a "Merge Filter" option to merge down filters, but we found it was often overlooked.
@npub16cx…jfpd came up with a redesign where we added an icon toggle next to the OK button. I put together a prototype to test the UX experience. Feel free to try out the AppImage and let us know what you think!

We ended up adding a small new feature while doing bugfixes for vector layers in GIMP 3.2.

I think it's pretty neat!

Ah! The color issue is because our DDS plug-in uses BGRA colors while bc7enc_rdo expects RGBA. Fixing that corrects the colors, though there's still other issues to review.

2025-12-21 20:31:51 UTC

I'm tinkering with incorporating Richard Geldreich's bc7enc_rdo library in GIMP's DDS plug-in. This would allow us to export DDS BC7 textures (BC7 import support was added in 3.0).
Screenshots shows the first attempt. Obviously work remains to be done, but it didn't crash like I expected the first time I ran it, so I'm pretty happy!

While reading the PSD specification, I saw that GIMP already has code to support importing several types of Adjustment Layers.
I did a quick test with connecting the Threshold, Posterize, and Invert code to our PSD plug-in, and it seemed to work well!
Hue/Saturation, Levels, and Curves should also be easy enough to add support for, since we already support PSD presets for those filters.

The concept of a "maskable adjustment layer" came up in conversation - where you can selectively mask an NDE filter on the layers below.
I realized that after @npub1wvm…5rdg 's work on making passthrough layer groups cover the full group render, we basically have this already. With a minor code tweak I'll be submitted soon, you can recreate maskable adjustment layers right in GIMP!

A WIP UI for non-destructive filters applied to layer masks. This is the tricky part - the actual implementation code was pretty simple. :)
I'm not sure if the switcher should always appear, even if the mask (or layer) has no filters, or only if both the layer and mask have active filters. Feedback appreciated!

One last "big" feature I'm trying to finish before the 3.2 release candidate deadline - vector masks!
The essential functionality is there, as can be seen below. I just need to clean it up and generalize the path tool's vector code to also respond to vector masks.

A minor UX-related draft, based on https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issues/13377 and some discussions I've seen.
This makes the image tab bar sensitive to drag-n-drop operations, and creates a new image when you drag one over on it. More testing needs to be done to make sure it doesn't cause conflicts elsewhere in GIMP, but it seems like a nice little quality of life update.

This is a bit different - it's a screenshot of #Inkscape !
I'm currently working on vector PDF export in #GIMP and the best way to test is to see if I can open and edit them in Inkscape. So far, so good!
(Definitely need to get better at vector art so I can make prettier screenshots)

I've put together an AppImage with the latest version of the SVG export WIP. You're welcome to try it out and see what you think.
You can get it by going to "View exposed Artifacts", clicking on "Linux Appimage", then following the links down until you get to the actual .appImage file.

Progress continues on SVG export! Now it exports layer groups and some initial text layers (font-size only for now).
I've got an initial GUI with options - next step is to enable saving raster layers as embedded base64 encoded images. I also want to give the option to link raster layers, but one step at a time.
(My secondary goal is to make sure the SVG output is correct so I don't create new bug reports for @npub1wg8…q6l7 in #Inkscape !)

More than likely yes. The color profile tells printers how to interpret the CMYK channels - if it's not in the file, then yes, it's likely to be considered "broken".
If the specification actually says that you have to have an associated profile to export a CMYK TIFF, we could perhaps lock the option (as we do with CMYK JPEGXL export).

As a test of our new vector layer public API, I've started work on an SVG export plug-in in #GIMP https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/merge_requests/2469
My hope is this will be helpful to people who want to export their projects for further work in dedicated vector graphics editors like #inkscape !
Feel free to share if there are any export options you think we should add (the immediate one is how to handle raster layers - ignore, embed, or link are the current options we're thinking)

2025-08-22 17:36:04 UTC

We recently merged an initial version of vector layers in #GIMP ! Very happy that we were able to update Hendrik Boom's 2006 project and finally get it across the finish line. :)
There's still plenty of UI/UX work to be done but I'm curious - what are some good "next steps" for vector layers in a raster editor?
I assume vector layer masks would be helpful, along with the long-requested shape tool.

Fair! The most important thing is that you can accomplish your tasks - whether with 2.10 or 3.0.
I haven't come across most of the bugs you mention, so I'll look into it. The "disappearing brush" might be due to a filtering bug - if so, it's fixed in source and should be available in the next release. Our co-maintainer is doing a lot of post-3.0 code clean-up and review, so hopefully that will capture more problems you mentioned.

Hi again! Any specific areas we should look at to fix?
There are a lot of workflows possible in GIMP, and it's easy to miss how some are affected (for instance, pasting as a new layer versus as a floating selection seems to have been a very polarizing change).

Compatibility is really important - we want to make sure no one loses data.
A fun example of this is that one of the original Google logos was made in GIMP in 1998, and it still opens in GIMP 3 just fine: https://www.google.com/logos/google5.xcf :)

Is anyone familiar with Meng+Scott Allen Burns upsampling?
I'm working on implementing spectral/pigment blending for GIMP's MyPaint brushes (now that we've ported to the version 2 brushes).
I'm trying to learn more about the theory behind the blending, and according to https://discuss.pixls.us/t/mypaint-2-0-alpha-released-with-spectral-pigment-brush-layer-mode/11086, they used a modified "Meng+Scott Allen Burns upsampling" algorithm.
I assume there's some research paper that discusses it, but I haven't had much luck yet finding a specific one by Meng & Burns.

It may be that if you change the setting to Add but GIMP crashes, the setting isn't being saved on exit. If you open GIMP, switch the setting, close and reopen, is Add retained?
As for crashes, please feel free to report the stacktrace on our bug tracker if you haven't already: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/activity
We're trying to fix them all, but some are difficult to reproduce without more info (like, some bugs only affect Flatpak, others only on macOS, etc).

Hi! Hmm - is it reseting to subtract mode each time you restart GIMP or when you switch tools? I haven't been able to replicate so far, but I'll look into it.
By chance, if you hold Shift while in Subtract mode, does it switch you back to Add mode?

An early example of creating vector layers via Python scripting in #GIMP. In addition to giving access to plug-in developers, we'll eventually use this to load SVGs as vectors (and load vector layers from formats that support them like PSD and PSP)!
There's still a lot of work to be done, both in the public API and internally, but progress continues.

A small side project, creating a plug-in that loads Seattle Filmworks images.
Seattle Filmworks was a film digitization company - you'd send them your film, and they'd send you back floppy disks with .sfw files and proprietary viewer. The images were mangled JPEGs, with increasingly complex changes as time went on.
The in-progress plug-in supports the first two versions of the file format, which are the most common.

I've been using a modified #Rawtherapee plug-in to load Camera RAW images in #ART (#anotherrawtherapee) and then edit them in #GIMP for my photography class.
I finally cleaned the code up and submitted it for the next development release. So hopefully soon, you'll be able to use ART in addition to the existing #darktable and RawTherapee RAW loaders! :)

A while back, a developer named Steve Williams contributed a working draft for a JPEG 2000 export plug-in for #GIMP (it suited their needs, but needed some work to be more general)
I took some time to finish polishing it, and now you can export 8 and 16bpc JPEG 2000 images, both as JP2 containers and J2K codestreams. However! I'm not sure what export options are relevant to include in the export dialogue.
If you use JPEG 2000, I'd appreciate any suggestions of what controls to add!

More progress on the vector layer code for #GIMP 3.2 in the last few days. Accessing the Fill/Stroke settings is now faster by double-clicking the preview, and you can switch the path used to create the shape live!
Another important thing is that the transform tools affect the path directly. Before, if you moved the layer rather than the path, it would snap back to the path's position when edited - now they move together.
Still a lot to do, both code and UX wise, but we're getting there!

I've been working on better integrating layer effects with the undo/redo history in #GIMP. Currently you can undo/redo adding, removing, and reordering filters.
This WIP connects editing filters as well, so you can revert back to previous layer effect settings. This should also help prevent surprises when Ctrl + Z removes the filter entirely rather than just reverting to a previous edit!

A #GIMP WIP inspired by a @npub1fw7…dva0 LibreArts article.
It's a Total Ink Coverage display filter! A simple algorithm that shows how much CMYK ink is being used in a particular part of the image. This is useful to knwo for printing, as different paper has different ink limits.
I want to integrate it with the soft-proofing pop-over as well, but this is a nice start.

For what it's worth, this issue was discussed during a team meet-up in the last few years: https://developer.gimp.org/conferences/wilberweek/2023-amsterdam/#gimp-renaming
It's one of the many things that developers want to come back to, after we recover from the 3.0 release.

2025-02-27 00:32:11 UTC

As we reach the finish line for the 3.0 release, I thought I'd post an older (pre-Color Space Invasion) test of a full CMYK mode in @npub1jxd…txs3. It's near the top of my TODO list to work on once the dust settles from the final 3.0 release, especially with all the color space improvements for anyRGB!

Hi! In fact, we have a merge request for vector layers (which would enable a shape tool). It's been worked on by several people, and we're hoping to finish it for the next release after 3.0.

There was a report from a few years ago about not being able to open Google Drive images in #GIMP. The assumption was that there were issues with accessing volatile files on a cloud platform.
The problem turned out to be much simpler - Google Drive returns an ID rather than the actual file name, so our auto-detect function couldn't match the image extension! :)
Thanks to help from Khalid Abu Shawarib, we now use the display-name which works for all files!

GIMP 3.0 will now support loading DDS images with BC7 compression! Thanks to Jacob Boerema for his help and the image testing framework he developed to check for regressions.
(I didn't realize it until we closed the issue, but @npub1fw7…dva0 was the one who originally requested this support a few years ago!)

In between working on bug fixes for GIMP 3.0, I've been trying to learn DDS's BC7 format since a lot of people have requested support for it.
Fortunately there's good documentation and reference implementations! This is my first version - obviously not 100% right, but I think I'm on the right path.

Thanks to @npub1wvm…5rdg's new filter API, we can now import legacy Color Overlay layer styles in PSDs!

@npub1wvm…5rdg is developing a new API that lets you apply NDE filters in #GIMP plug-ins, for the 3.0 RC2 release.
While testing the branch, I made a quick edit to the PSD import plug-in, and verified we'll be able to load Photoshop layer styles!
This is a work in progress (and I think matching the GEGL filter properties with PSD Layer styles will take some work), but it's encouraging. :)

GitLab's been down on-and-off recently, which has slowed work on pushing bugfixes for #GIMP 3.0RC2.
In the mean time, I've been tinkering on my Dreamcast PowerVR texture import plug-in. It'll likely be my first image format submission after the final 3.0 release. :)

Does anyone know where I could find good sample images for .pvr files? These are texture image files primarily used for SEGA Dreamcast games.
I'm working on an import/export plug-in in-between bugfixes for 3.0. I have a few samples, but more would be great - there's a lot of internal types like indexed and bumpmap PVRs.

Cool! I actually helped add Amiga ILBM support to #GIMP in the development version: https://www.gimp.org/news/2023/07/09/gimp-2-99-16-released/#new-image-format-supports-pam-qoi-amiga-iffilbm-dcx
We're in feature freeze as we get ready to release 3.0, but after that I plan on adding more features to our Amiga plug-in. I'd also be interested in adding support for the brush format if you could share some sample files (the issue tracker is here: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issues/6161)
