I keep seeing sources that I used to trust like the Syntax podcast and the Changelog Newsletter talk about OpenClaw in superlatives, while the YouTube channel Low Level explains how most popular OpenClaw skills are straight up malware and nobody should install this on any machine with any personal data.
Do we all live in the same reality? I'm confused.

💯 this. My desk was way too tall for years. I finally bought a new desk, the smallest standing desk from Flexispot. At the lowest setting, the desk is the right height for me. That's absolutely ridiculous - I had to buy the smallest desk possible for it to fit me, and I am of an average height for a woman in Germany. How are the smaller 50% of women supposed to find the right desk?!

My hand pain... disappeared?! 🥳
I don't know who needs to hear this, but apparently your hand is supposed to be floating when using a computer mouse, also a vertical one. Don't put your hand on the desk. Move your whole arm, not just the wrist. I learned this a month ago, at age 31, and this one simple adjustment made my hand pain go away.

People need to select text to copy-paste and share the content with others, to put it through a translator tool, to make notes for later, to search for more details on a topic... so in general I would advise limiting button content to the bare necessary minimum.

I have another detail for you - text selection. Selecting text and click side-effects usually conflict. Selecting text with a mouse consists of "mouse down, drag, mouse up" events. After "mouse up", a click event triggers. If you're trying to select text on something that has behavior on click, you will trigger that behavior even if you didn't want to.
For this reason, by default, buttons have text selection disabled (user-select: none). But being able to select text is important.

So we're talking about something like this https://codepen.io/angelikatyborska/pen/jENmyWy ?
From the top of my head, there are 2 big practical problems with this code:
1. With VoiceOver on Safari, it is not possible to reach the link in any way. The usual shortcut that allows you to navigate "into" an element doesn't work on buttons. The "links" rotor also does not detect that link.
2. Event bubbling. A click event on the anchor triggers a click event on the button.

2024-12-18 18:06:25 UTC

Negatives: I failed to be able to do a single full unassisted pull up this year, I can do like 80% of one. I blame the machine I train on because it doesn't have a full ROM. It ends with my forehead at the bar level, not my chin... I should switch to assisting with bands.
My overhead press progress is pathetic. It definitely suffered due to my focus on pull-ups and lower back pain issues, but still. One extra rep per year? Is it even worth doing?

2024-12-18 18:03:37 UTC

- reply

Positives: I'm happy with my quad and lat gains. My lats definitely grew because for the first time in my life, I had to buy a new coat because it was too tights on my back, not stomach 😊. It took me a lot of effort to progress from 110kg to 120kg on the leg press. Unfortunately +10 is the smallest weight increase on my machine, and being able to bring the weight in motion with 120kg was a challenge.

2024-12-18 18:02:44 UTC

- reply

Body weight: fluctuated +/-2kg, in the end no change.
Extra context: those are only the exercises that I've been consistently doing and also tracking for the whole year. I switched my main chest exercise midyear and started tracking a few more exercises, incl. abs. I do an upper/lower split. I do progression by increasing the number of reps until I hit 12 reps, then I lower the reps and increase the weight.

Hip thrust machine:
8 x 45kg -> 10 x 52kg
Leg press:
8 x 90kg -> 8 x 120kg
Assisted pull-up, neutral grip (lower weight assist = better):
8 x 28kg -> 8 x 14kg
Standing barbell overhead press:
7 x 25kg -> 8 x 25kg
Wide grip pull-down:
10 x 32kg -> 8 x 37kg
Lying dumbbell triceps extensions:

I posted the article now (https://mas.to/@angelikatyborska/113469551491268724) but just as a TL;DR: If you define webpack as a dev dependency, then you are forced to install all of your dev dependencies (testing frameworks, linters, formatters) just to do a production build.

2024-11-12 10:39:11 UTC

I wrote my thoughts on how to decide what's a regular dependency and what's a dev dependency in a JavaScript app (not library). It's surprisingly unclear... https://angelika.me/2024/11/11/dependencies-vs-dev-dependencies-javascript-apps/

Linting and formatting for sure, but also maybe HMR and a dev server is a dev dependency, IF they are not tied to the build tools in any way? I'm not sure.
TBH, I have never been in a project/team that had a clear definition of dev dependencies. I've been winging it, and the only times I had to think about it for a second was when the build process was failing because the build Docker image set NODE_ENV to production.

2024-11-10 14:44:37 UTC

I found two conflicting examples from popular FE setups: Create React App puts "react-scripts" as a regular dependency, white Vite React template puts Vite as a dev dependency 🤷‍♀️

2024-11-10 14:37:05 UTC

- reply

That's my husband's opinion too. My opinion is: dev dependencies are dependencies that you don't need for any of your Node.js scripts that run with NODE_ENV=production. Which would qualify your build tools as regular dependencies, not dev deps. I chose this definition because it allows you to leverage the dependency split to limit how many dependencies get installed on the system where you create the production build.

2024-11-10 14:32:42 UTC

Imagine you're building a static website using Node.js and Webpack. Webpack will generate a few static HTML, CSS, and JS files that you will later copy over to some web server running nginx.
Is Webpack a dev dependency or a regular dependency?

2024-11-10 14:22:55 UTC

I wanted to write a blog post about how to define the line between dev dependencies and regular dependencies in a JavaScript app (not library). I did some research and thought I have a good idea for how to define dev dependencies. I told it to my husband, and he hit me with an alternative definition that I haven't even considered 🤣. Which only confirms my suspicion that as an industry, we also don't have a clear agreement on what dev dependencies are.

I'm proud to report I read the whole thing 🫡 I'm not much of a reader so finishing a book is an achievement for me.
Very good read, I learned some new information, but was also very happy to confirm a lot of my existing knowledge.

I've been working as a dev on employment contracts for small companies for 8 years and I was always the only one who wrote any blog posts. I would guess that literally 99% of professional web developers do not publish any content online. At least nothing long form, maybe they post forum messages and SO answers.
