If you've read/heard in media that Ukraine-Russia war starts to turn in Ukraine's favor, it actually might be true, at least to some degree.
I 'm seeing unprecedented levels of hacking attempts on my server coming from Russia and Belarus IPs - mainly failed attempts to SMTP AUTH due to bots crashing on attempts to perform CRAM-MD5 and attempts to exploit WordPress/PHP vulnerabilities. Since my server isn't some high-profile one, this means they're trying to hack as many boxes as possible. That in turn means desperation.

@nprofile…hs8h For 1541/1541-II? AFAIK only 6502.

@nprofile…hs8h True, 6502 CPU in 1541(-II) didn't need to share memory bus with VIC-II chip. Also - it was slightly higher clocked.

I love the recent sensationalist "news" of C64 disk drive (actually it was compatible with more than just that, but let's leave that aside for now) is "powerful enough to be a computer". Guys, that's not news. It has the same CPU as Commodore 64 and had 16KB of ROM and 2KB of RAM and its ROM (firmware) had means for programming the RAM using the serial bus it used.
And they even made it bit-bang the video signal in the "Freespin" demo:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zprSxCMlECA
So yeah, it WAS a computer from very beginning.

@nprofile…lptk @nprofile…zsct In Vista they actually fixed many long-standing design issues, like the chaining of clipboard monitoring which could bring down several seemingly unrelated apps when one hangs (fixed this in Vista with new API that notified apps "asynchronously", without any chaining between apps using clipboard).

I'm waiting for social media outrage stemming from the fact that hammer absolutely wrecks the fork when it comes to driving nails.
Seriously, everyone raving about very basic chess program easily beating some overgrown statistic-based phrase completion service should read how LLMs work and stop spreading sensationalist BS. Like, as ASAP as possible.

@nprofile…avnq The "FAITH" game (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1179080/FAITH_The_Unholy_Trinity/) makes strong use of this. And it excellently fits the game somehow.

@nprofile…f0k8 cool! Asking because I'm thinking about posting more ai-gen pics and using #aiart-friendly instance for that instead the one I'm on. And since I love tinkering with this thing I'll be probably posting more than just pics.

If we trust whatever info is floating around about #DeepSeek, then this is classical example of what happens when "brute force" is no longer an option. This is what made 8-bit and 16-bit demoscene so beautiful too - those guys were producing graphical and sound effects deemed impossible on the machines of that era. Such is DeepSeek - it's better than ChatGPT at fraction of the cost sustained by OpenAI - something also deemed impossible.
And that probably wouldn't happen if China wasn't banned from most powerful AI chips in the first place.

In a typical for Chinese communists fashion, they want to ban muricans fleeing off soon-to-be-banned Tiktok into their RedNote platform, because they're afraid that muricans will influence Chinese citizens.
This only proves that Tiktok ban should be worldwide, not limited just to US.

@nprofile…5zd4 no, this depends on electrical activity on either side. Since Commodore drives are self-contained, when they are idle they don't do much electrical interference that could pass on to your speakers through your machine.

To those who maintain their own (small, private) #mastodon instances - how difficult it is to maintain? What hurdles you have to go through to keep it running reliably?

@npub1k74…dmux back in the day, photoshop skills were rare and things weren't as simple as today. Same goes with AI image generators - it takes skills to produce quality, photorealistic image that has little to no evidence of being AI generated. Instead of being scared of that tech, acknowledge its existence and apply common internet content rule - distrust anything you haven't seen in real life.

@npub1k74…dmux That was the case before AI stormed the market. Postprocessing was prevalent - sometimes subtle, sometimes less subtle. There's a lot of non-AI pics that started as photographs, yet they aren't real.
