The reason why I haven't visited much at conferences is that during COVID I realized that I just don't enjoy them that much. And over the years they've become more and more like marketing events.
However, I do listen interesting presentations and read the slides. I probably get more out of them this way as I have some focus issues. I can be in a presentatio motivated to focus on listening the talk and after 20 minutes I just wake realizing that I have not paid attention to anything :-) Can't help it. Hallway discussions are cool tho.

We need probably sooner or later better instructions for dealing with LLM assisted patches.
E.g., what to do if the fix itself is alright but commit messages have a continuous trend of being quite bad. I.e. you clearly can observe the patch being pure LLM dump but possibly still a legit fix for critical bug.
This quite defacto dilemma situation. At least for me. We need a more detailed guide on LLMs.
I don't this was the purpose of a patch being LLM assisted because there is zero involvement by the so called author. It's also a risk for kernel because author's own sanity check is our first layer of protection against malicious changes. I make mistakes too and it is now only up to me to explain the patch to myself and acking based on that, making me in a way both reviewer and the actual virtual author in a way.

Bonsai 2 27B with 256k context running on RTX 4090 24 GiB, and hosted by Puu OS.
Puu OS also has preconfigured Qwen 3.8 27B, which fits easily to DGX Spark.
LLM models, when you actually host them, require their own (manual) shoehorning in order to fly nicely in the environment, and there is no exact template for this. Thus, I focus on one all-arounder model with two different quantizations in the base installation of Puu OS. For those that don't know this Bonsai 2 27B is a ternary quantization of Qwen 3.8 27B.
This is a personal achievement for me despite not being a huge achievement overall as I could never imagine I could have a something with a decent context size with the hardware that I have at hand.
I purposely want to do a small AI assisted contribution with this to kernel when I have a chance :-)

This how I backup now with Restic.
I have restic-env:
# vim:ft=sh
export AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY=$(pass net/mega.nz/s4/secret)
export AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID=$(pass net/mega.nz/s4/access)
export RESTIC_PASSWORD_COMMAND="pass net/mega.nz/restic/$1"
export RESTIC_REPOSITORY="s3:s3.eu-amsterdam-2.megas4.com/$1"
Then for each system I have own bucket, which I manage as follows:
Backup: restic backup --files-from ~/MEGA/Restic/jarkko-kan-01.local.txt
Restore: restic --target / 4de0c63f.
Note that restore is done relative to the system root i.e., they are full system backups.
I use these more like long-term preserved content, audio plugin presets and stuff like that rather than e.g., config files (for those I rather use Git).

Truecolor vim9 colorschemes that come with Vim 9.2:
- retrobox
- habamax
- lunaperche
- quiet
- sorbet
- zaibatsu
- wildcharm.
I have these written down as I've started with any possible dev tool to pick themes from the built-in, and I've stopped downloding 3rd party themes.
The quantitative gain is the reduced risk to become a victim of a supply chain attack.
I would like note also that limitations accelerate creativity and brain likes variation I woud like to think :-)

There’s an AI startup in my hometown of Tampere called GitHits. I see their product’s value and a glimpse of actually “doing better for the ecosystem” overall. I got in touch with them because I had one very specific use case in mind.
While at Intel, it was underlined that even copy-pasting code from Stack Overflow is something you should not be doing, given the unknown source of origin. It got really delivered for me through annual trainings, and as a consequence have never copy-pasted anything from there :-)
Where I see GitHits as useful is on the legal/licensing side of software IP i.e., tracking and documenting known sources and providing better legal and licensing feedback.
For instance, even a “permissive” license might require attribution despite allowing unrestricted use otherwise. Having these details screened is crucial software when it has actual IP value.
I believe doing the legally right thing with IP almost unconditionally also improves the legitimate use of open source.

Model-Control-Protocol (MCP) is in the literal sense of the word same as if Python replaced modules with daemons and function calls with a request-response-protocol sitting behind either TCP or UDS socket.
It only exist because Claude Code is exceptionally bad.

A hardware ecosystem, which is based on majority of semiconductors going into data centers cannot sustain itself forever. To add more stress, it's for the most part debt based eocsystem.
This is a slowly but steadily lurking existential problem e.g., to companies like Apple.
I mean if person like me, who has no debt, has steady income and even savings and whose daughter is an adult, starts to think that "hmm... maybe I postpone buying Switch 2 for some time", it is an inevitable problem. Extrapolate from that.

@nprofile…r9vg I don't think there is a country in the world who has the kind of innovation ecosystem for quickly building new types of disposable drone, drone boats and whatnot. And it's quite rare actually that US wants weapon manufacturers to expand to their soil, or at least it is quite uncommon.

@nprofile…r9vg drone program, and the turnover time of its R&D and data analysis and collection. I'd really like to know how the drones tell each other who they are and how the whole "machine identity" works overall in that platform.
Russia will loose because they are 2-3 generations behind in the R&D cycle of drones. As long as Ukraine can maintain their agility. I believe they can and will win the whole war. I believe Ukraine has a strong chance to get borders back to 2013, which is IMHO only acceptable end game.
Ukraine has e.g., established drone factories to US in some states, and they are already consulting in other crisis territories. Letting Russia to win is like.... impossible. They would win also the drone tech race.
Other than drones, here is this one military expert guy "Jason Jay Smart" who I like to watch from YouTube. That's about it :-) Things started to really accelerate circa late February while in US ICE was being productive and shooting US citizens.

2026-07-22 00:37:54 UTC

If AI is here to stay, what open source community needs to do is to conquer the tools. That's how *we* retain control and govern the ecosystem.
That's one of the reasons why I do so much digging in the local AI space.
When it comes to AI policies, and especially Linux kernel, I just follow the lead and I'm happy that I don't have make the unpopular decisions. [I don't think there actually is a popular position when it comes to AI, so what would you decide if you were Linus? Not a position to envy for TBH.]
My fighting ground is building tools that are convenient and elegant enough that they naturally grow the user base and build up politics-free governance for everyone.

2026-06-27 15:09:55 UTC

I've never even really considered using AI for writing kernel patches.
We could go through the usual reasons, like simply congitive abilities to be a gatekeeper for anything but there are also cost-benefit measures that simply make using AI a bad investment in this particular area of expertise.
Writing the code takes about 1-5% of the all time spent on a kernel patch. It is still really important meditation time too, as then you can go through your plan/strategy slowly and make sure every brick is in the right place. I notice tons issues while writing code even if the overall plan is solid as **** (... and this is why BTW spec-driven agent loop development is complete and uttermost nonsense).
By cutting that 1-5% there is at least no financial at all, and the drawback is a constant ffux of kernel bugs because of *mistakes*, not unexpected conditions. Even if it was 0,1% that a frontier LLM generates a kernel bug, it is 0,1% too much. And even if I can human-check and test it (which I would, it is not at all the same than the quality time spent browsing the kernel tree :-)

2026-05-26 22:45:09 UTC

Have not thought about this before but it has been not been very ergonomic to have both QEMU's and tmux prefix key mapped to CTRL-A, so I mapped tmux to CTRL-Q.

Memory safety is somewhat relative. My very early C version of the tracker has segfaulted maybe 1-2 times. Rust had much more memory instability.
Why C version is more stable:
1. If there is a segafault in a C program, for user space program, the full disclosure of the bug takes me like less than 20 minutes, with or without symbols. The binary is simple and as per code generated C is the most WYSIWYG language ever.
2. I can go absolutely sick in QA torture of the executable. There's so many ways you can bomb a C binary and trace everything in eBPF detail if you want, you can symbolic execute it with clang-tidy, Valgrind it etc.
I.e. while there are no federated laws the net result is still favorable for C at least in this project. I'm glad I started this rewrite :-)

Awesome, it went through first time. Finally had time to actually enable secure boot with sbctl.
Here’s what I did:
Enabled secure boot in custom mode (i.e., not standard mode) from BIOS settings.
Erased all keys. This triggers so called “setup mode” for the next boot.
Typed bunch of random commands :-)
I did the script couple of weeks ago but did not have time to test it live (until now).
