There's another PHP vulnerability out. They're saying it's only a thing if you have a web app that's configured "weirdly."
If you're on linux and you don't think you have PHP installed, you should check.
That's not meant to be fear mongering about PHP. I don't have an issue with PHP generally. However, you shouldn't have server software running on your computer unless you're doing it on purpose. If you are doing it on purpose, you have to keep track of vulnerabilities.

Having to write in such a way that no one has any notable familial relationships in my adult works is a pain in the ass
I really want to write something recontextualizing the story of the Garden of Eden but there's no where I can publish it :blobcatgiggle:

Alright, Gratsi, I wasn't going to drink your wine anyway but, now that you've repeatedly forced me to watch an "A.I." generated ad for your shitty wine, I'm sharing that information with my friends.
Do you have so little care for your own product that you genuinely don't mind how the "A.I." presented it? It's more than usually dull and lifeless. The box of the wine looks utterly generic. The character looks and sounds as unexcited as a human could possibly be. And there's nothing in the ad that would justify the use of the faux Pixar animation art style.
Even if I wasn't opposed to "A.I." art, this ad is a screaming cry for "don't waste your money on us!"

He enabled fascism
In the case of Lindsey Graham, he didn't enable fascism. He helped implement it. The reason you don't want to say "he helped implement fascism" is because you don't want to acknowledge that what we have right now (and have had since longer than Trump started his second term) is fascism.
Not because you're trying not to speak ill of the dead.

Waterfox added Qwant as its default search engine as a way to gain revenue. I've never used Qwant before today. They (quant) have some cookie settings you can't turn off and which I consider unacceptable.
So I've set Waterfox to nuke cookies on exit (which I do for most of my browsers anyway).
I have a fool proof search engine test which fails on most search engines. It worked on Qwant. So I guess that's a search engine worth considering if you can deal with the cookie shit. (I'm not publicly describing the test because, if the search engines know about it, they can carve out an exception to their nonsense to make themselves look like they have a functional search engine. And then I'd have to find a new test which would be very annoying.)

The POTS network (old school landlines before they got fucked with) have what amounts to a battery backup. By law. That means that no matter what shenanigans your local power company got up to, you could rely on phones working as long as your line to your exchange was working.
A lot of people relied on that for things like medical devices that required the certainty that they could always dial out.
Phone companies have been actively moving people off of POTS to IP based phones. For most people, their internet goes out when their power does. If you've got fiber and a UPS, your situation may be different. Because I have that combo, my main computer doesn't lose internet when the power goes out. However, back when I had copper based internet, my internet went down just like everyone else's.
Point being that because the government hasn't regulated internet the same way, people can't rely on internet phone lines the same way they were able to rely on POTS. Stuff like that is precisely why the phone companies want people off of POTS.
Now, carriers like Spectrum are specifically advertising that their service stays up when the power goes out.
They're selling us back a service we used to get by law.

I'm still pretty mixed about Draft2Digital because of their recent actions. However, I haven't migrated away from them yet. I'll still be participating in the Summer/Winter sale in July.
All of my Midge Hollerin and Ash Hollerin stories will be 50% off or more during the month of July. With the caveat that I will probably have at least one story publish in July and I don't know whether that will be discounted yet.
Please do take advantage of the sale. Please review my stories wherever you find them (if you've actually read the story!). Share them with friends. Don't feel conflicted about the D2D issues on my behalf.

There are certain technologies where everyone involved in it assumes that anyone learning it already knows like 90% of what they need to and thus the basics, intermediates, and pretty much anything else are wholly unnecessary.
Somewhat akin to ...

Anyway. Don't do that with new drivers or your fancy technology thing either.

Rust’s behavior with regards to its RFC on an LLM policy has caused me to lose trust in the #Rust organization.
The actual policy could have been worse in terms of its content. However, as Athena has shown, it also could have been better and more concise.
The issue I’m calling out here isn’t the proposed policy. It’s how they’ve handled the RFC. The handling itself has at least the appearance of ethical issues.
Preemptively forbidding salient comments shows they know the issues and are refusing to allow anyone to address it. Shutting down the RFC for comments (the C part of RFC) when “too many” people object to this restriction cements the ethical issues with their behavior.

@nprofile…lqnd Joplin 3.6.11. It's still Markdown but it hides all of the actual code of that unless you tell it to cut that out. #Joplin changed a setting without asking me ... a setting that kind of ruined its usefulness to me. If you want Joplin in WYSIWYG mode, that already exists and you can just do it. Making a fake WYSIWYG mode and forcing everyone on it is totally unnecessary.
But it told me about it and gave me an easy way to disable the bad thing they'd done that didn't require me to step out of my workflow. So it could be worse. By a lot. Not naming names on that one.

@nprofile…qvan If publishing to Amazon or the other big sellers, yes. Underwear and bras are generally disallowed. Anything that suggests the clothes are being take off or implies that the model isn’t wearing clothes also isn’t going to go well.
Occasionally, Amazon and others will let some slip through but it’s not a risk to take lightly.

#Draft2Digital lately announced that they were partnering with #Bookshop to allow authors to publish there as well. They were pretty vague about that but authors quickly found out that #erotica need not apply.
After an outcry, Draft2Digital announced that the restriction against erotica was “temporary” until they could put in “additional safeguards”.
Due to crappy behavior and a lack of transparency, it’s hard to know how to take this announcement.

Alright. So. A few things.
The right time to give me a choice in whether or not unasked 'AI' 'features' were shoved down my throat was before you did the shoving
Making everyone refer to obscure guides that involve bypassing scare warnings in order to turn those features off is phenomenally bad user experience
The unasked for, unwanted 'AI' features you've been shoving down our throats behave — from a user perspective — similar to cryptojacking in that their computer suddenly performs very poorly without transparency to the user about why or a choice about turning it off (again, the wrong time to ask is after you've already done the bad thing)
I am not signing up for yet another god damn thing just so I can tell you so

At one point, the best place to get information on web comics and indie bands was Wikipedia. People who deeply cared about those topics (and probably other niche topics) managed to keep those pages running while finding journalistic sources to make sure their pages were in compliance with Wikipedia's rules.
Then one day, an Administrator got a bug up their ass and decided to recommend all of those pages for deletion because they weren't "notable" enough.
Their coup succeeded and the majority of that stuff was expelled from Wikipedia.
So, to the extent that stuff exists, it's now on fan wikis. Many of which are hosted on fandom.com. Which was founded by Jimmy Wales, that guy who's always begging you for money.
Now, I don't know that there's a connection between what the administrator did and Jimmy's shit with Fandom.com.
It stinks like hell, though.
Even if Jimmy hadn't been a founder for fandom.com, I still wouldn't donate to Jimmy after his organization betrayed so many Wikipedia editors who cared about those pages enough to create and maintain them.
Or, as I usually put it, "I'm not paying you money to delete something I was reading last week, Jimmy."

As a point of clarification, blocks on Fediverse may not be as private as you’re expecting. Soma malicious actors have built tools to notify them when they or their server are blocked at least at an instance level. I’m not 100% clear whether that applies to personal blocks.
In my opinion, if someone is using a software to identify people or instances that have blocked them in order to harass those who have blocked them … that should be a Fediblock situation.
I bring this up because of the ICE / Bluesky block situation. I’m seeing some posts here that have me concerned that people here may have overestimated the privacy of Fediverse blocks. Arguably, Fediverse is still better on this point. There’s no public list of all blocks anyone can get to any time. They’re not particularly private though.

2026-01-14 18:29:22 UTC

I really hate to say this bluntly but I'm going to say it. I will not boost your stuff if you're using "AI" art in the cover or in the promotional material.
There's a lot of other people who won't either.
I would rather see the cringiest possible clip art than see hot "AI" garbage. I'd rather see the same five public domain photos off of Pixabay and Unsplash again and again than see "AI" garbage.
We don't want LLMs fucking with the writers' side of things. Don't use generated images to fuck with the artists' side of things.

Every year, folks rightly remind each other not to donate to the Salvation Army because they are a hate group who have likely contributed to deaths. (Phrased this way very intentionally.)
However, they are also a high control group. I’m not prepared to state whether they are or are not what we generally consider a cult but they certainly are a high control group.
Having a high control group run services that help the vulnerable is dangerous and rife for abuse not only of group members but, critically, those who need those services.

The closure of one of the last sources of real journalism in this country bodes very ill. Leaving important shit like this in the hands of large corporations has bitten us in the ass yet again.

Hey, folks. I know not everyone is down for DMs. I actually am available for DMs ... with caveats.
Caveats:
Flirty, probably ok (provided you are at least 30; I'm solidly in my mid-40s). Jumping straight to horny behavior ... almost certainly not ok.
Don't be hostile.
Don't expect an immediate response. In fact, you might not get one at all depending on the context.
That last bit is true regardless of the post visibility. :blobcatgiggle:
Not really a personal rule but something you should be aware of: Due to the nature of the fediverse, DMs aren't truly private. At minimum, the admin of all directly involved servers could read them.

That poll was going around asking how many bookmarks you have on Fediverse. I've talked before about how mine are out of control and I want a way to index / preserve the toots in there and unbookmark the majority.
But I didn't know how many I actually had.
It turns out the number was 1621. After several failed attempts to make a reasonable shell script to unbookmark a pile of them, I'm running a sequence of unbookmarks (using toot rather than anything I've programmed myself). This doesn't solve the indexing need but it will get some of my bookmarks out. :blobcatgiggle:
While I'm only doing about two unbookmarks a minute, I'm still conscious that this may have an impact on my server so I'm not going to be on this account for the length of this batch (about an hour).
I'll borderline be AFK because I've got some things to do but you can reach me at @nprofile…06dr or @nprofile…mjl3 .

Paramount is advertising their streaming service more heavily than they have in my memory. Which is kind of odd when you consider all the (presumably) expensive shows they've been running without that heavy advertisement since CBS All Access and Star Trek: Discovery were making their debuts. I'd like to imagine this is because they're getting trounced for repeated and very bad decisions.
Paramount has always been allergic to sound financial decisions. What they're doing now is not merely a continuation of that. Re-creating their news organization as an extremist Right Wing Weasel entity and inserting pro-Trump propaganda pieces as "PSAs" at the end of their streaming shows should be more than enough for you to cancel your streaming service with them.
If you don't have Paramount, don't get it. If you have Paramount, cancel.

This week has been a bit of a shitshow for me so I haven't used up the veggies I bought last week. I combined four smallish zucchini, a large red onion, and a pack of white mushrooms with the other concepts in this recipe to make some roasted veggies. This is roughly half of my pile. The other half is in the air fryer at the moment.

Frustrating that an underappreciated Netflix original I was talking about just two weeks ago is now the target of an outrage merchant's attempt to remove queer content from Netflix.
You can learn more about the campaign in Jessie Gender's video. If you have Netflix, please check out Dead End: Paranormal Park. The feeling is a bit like a more focused Gravity Falls for an audience skewing slightly older than Gravity Falls. It's a genuinely good show and it's an outrage that they didn't get season 3.
You can also support Dead End: Paranormal Park's creator, Hamish Steele, through things they have in their online store available on their website, HamishSteele.co.uk.

This is a #FediHired post. I have 20 years of experience managing, maintaining, implementing, and migrating knowledge bases for client-facing audiences, first and second level teams, and third level teams and strategic teams. My experience includes doing handovers from project teams to first and second level teams. I have extensive experience in minimizing the effort required from project teams in order to complete a successful handover.
I have several years of experience as a team lead for general IT service desks and help desks with out-sourced and in-sourced team members, often both at the same time. I have experience as manager in identity services, authorization provisioning, and identity platform. My experience in these areas includes the successful implementation of a new authorization provisioning platform, management of a third party vendor who performed tasks related to the same, and coordination with large numbers of technical teams inside the company.
I've run big teams. I've run small teams. My focus in both was balancing the needs of the organization with the needs of our client bases, while ensuring compliance with multinational regulations. Happy, engaged, and supported employees and contractors are key to running an efficient support organization.
I have extensive experience in end user support of these topics and management of technicians who are providing support for the same:
Windows
Mac OS
Office applications (including but not limited to Microsoft Office products)
Design suites including but not limited to Adobe and Affinity products
In-house and legacy applications
Mobile operating systems including iOS
I have platform management (implementation, maintenance, and administration) experience with several wiki and knowledge base technologies including but not limited to MediaWiki, Atlassian Confluence, DokuWiki, and SharePoint. This involves performing tasks and configuration on Windows Server and Ubuntu Server, use of Active Directory to manage users and groups. This also involves installation and configuration of Apache, NGINX, cache implementations, and prerequisite technology including but not limited to MySQL.
I have extensive experience implementing solutions in Python.
I'm currently a semester away from completing my Bachelor of Science Information Technology Management program.

Ever wonder what those blue light topped poles are in plazas and other places? Yeah, turns out they’re pretty bad. https://youtu.be/Pp9MwZkHiMQ
They’re a way to enable warrant free tracking and surveillance of your movements and they are likely playing a key role in ICE’s illegal kidnapping campaign.
Note: I don’t endorse Benn’s final statement directed at law enforcement. All law enforcement agencies in the U.S. flow from racist origins. They cannot be reformed to resolve their issues. They can only be removed and replaced by a wholly new, democratic means of performing actually meaningful services for the people.

#ScribesAndMakers June 20: What fictional character do you most closely identify with and why?
Kathy H from Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go. I actually rather hope people will read it so I don't want to talk to much about why. She's someone who lives a sheltered life to begin with and gradually comes to understand what's really going on in the world she lives in.

I've been holding these questions for a few days knowing this Talk To Me Day was coming up. :blobcatgiggle: In your June 10 #WordWeavers post, you said you were "on a one-woman crusade to bring back multi-POVs and omniscient POVs to genre fiction." I love multi-POV and 3rd person myself but I haven't messed with omnicient narrators, preferring to hew 3rd person close perspective.
Do you draw any inspiration on 3rd person omniscient? (Frank Herbert is the one I feel like most of us have had some exposure to.)
Do you have a system for making a large cast of POV characters organized?

I'm not ranking my babies. :blobcatgiggle: Of the ones I've published, I'd say Don't Get Seduced By A Fairy! is the 'best.'
It stands alone despite being in a setting that I'm writing other stories in. It tells a really sweet story I'm very proud of. And it manages to do that despite some really annoying problems caused by Amazon. And I can write more stories in that setting because I don't have a central character whose extremely vanilla kinks are dodgy to publish on Amazon when the characters are queer.

Nicole (the human) works for the same university she got her degree from. (One of the fantasy elements of Dryadis is that you can make a comfortable living doing important work for the public benefit.)
Paige (the vampire) works for at least one restaurant and one coffee shop. The vampires and werewolves in her area have a kind of housing and resources co-op. The money she brings in is appreciated but she works a lot harder than she has a strong need to ... for reasons best explored on the page.

#WritersCoffeeClub June 2: Do you write linearly? Why or why not?
Semi-linearly. I'll leave placeholders for some partial scenes to come back to later. Sometimes I'll work on two or three chapters in parallel. I tend not to go very far out of order. I write out of order in a focused area because it works for me. I don't go further afield because it tends to result in larger rewrites and possibility continuity errors.

Tell us about an epiphany that changed your writing.
I grew up in a very restrictive version of Christianity. It wasn't directly IBLP but it was very similar. Every type of sexual feeling or impulse is a sin and deeply shameful until you are married and then it's only allowed between you and your spouse but it's as shameful not to be wildly horny for your spouse.
No one escapes this kind of indoctrination without some ... unhealthiness of some kind. Some people are harmed by their inability to turn on something they had been told to suppress all their lives. Others can't suppress and feel deep, continual guilt about their sexuality and sensuality. I was in the latter camp. (And those two are not the only ways, just the only ways I'm talking about today.)
The epiphany didn't come all at once or immediately undo all the guilt and shame I felt. I suspect I've still got things to work through and I probably always will. The epiphany is that I am not some special monster for having sexuality and sensuality. Reading smut isn't some great sin. Writing it isn't some great sin.
The kind of extremism I've spoken about here isn't unique to Christianity nor is it universal in Christianity. It is fully possible to be a Christian and not be repressive, repressed, or repressing. No longer being a believer myself (of that anyway), I'm probably not the best person to help you on that journey.
Being Asexual or Aromantic is also on the normal spectrum of human sexuality. While we all probably need some kind of help with something, you're not broken or in need of fixing if you don't experience sexual or romantic attraction.

Tonight, starting sometime between 6-7PM EDT (UTC-4), I'll be live tooting Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country from @nprofile…4aqe . This is the first Star Trek movie that I saw in the movie theater. It's also the reason Star Trek fans argue about what color Klingon blood is.
This is the last of the Nicholas Meyer directed Trek films but not the end of his involvement in Star Trek.
The movie is inspired by a Leonard Nimoy idea about tying the end of the U.S.-Russian cold war to Star Trek, a nuance I was far too young to have noticed when I was ... probably ten years old?
In addition to our normal cast, Kim Cattrall joins as Lt. Valeris, one of my favorite Vulcan characters in franchise history. Christopher Plummer plays Chang. David Warner returns but plays Chancellor Gorkon rather than St. John Talbot.
Star Trek alums Brock Peters, René Auberjonois, and Michael Dorn also make appearances.

The one that someone caught was the CMYK on the paint palette. CMYK (means Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and blacK; also known as "Four Color") is the process used in most professional color printing other than brand colors printed officially. It's the print version of RGB.
While the knitting needles crossed behind the yarn ball isn't an uncommon illustration, I intentionally drew it that way as my version of a Skull and Crossbones style pirate flag. More for the DIY than an endorsement of digital piracy. Pay your artists for their art, please! :blobcatpirate:
The blue notebook is modelled after a specific model of blue notebook I've owned twice (in blue; I've owned other versions in other colors). One was tragically left somewhere and not returned despite the offer of money on return. The notebook is a little bigger than a 3x5 notebook and had more normal paper in it than a 3x5 notebook. The lost-and-not-returned notebook had all my project notes for a project I lost enthusiasm for when my notebook wasn't returned. I still think about the fact that the notebook was never returned.
The DSLR wasn't drawn off of it but it was inspired by a camera my roommate and I bought for video projects. We didn't buy it because it was white but it is white and has a much smaller lens than I'm used to.
The ladder stitch is commonly used in closing puppets and stuffed animals. The Easter Egg is the color. I gave it a green color similar to Kermit who I had a stuffed animal of when I was pretty young.
The specific version of the Starfleet combadge I drew was made for the finale of The Next Generation for a future that didn't end up taking place because Jean Luc solved the problem that Q tricked him into causing. I believe the same prop was used in the DS9 episode The Visitor and the Voyager episode Endgame. However, as far as I know, anything past DS9 and Voyager that looks similar is a new prop. All occurances I'm aware of the original props come from hypothetical futures which are destroyed by the actions of the characters in the episode. It's kind of silly as an Easter Egg but it's a detail I like.
Every hand tool is drawn from a lefty perspective even though I would use those tools right handed (despite probably being a lefty myself). People familiar with paint palettes might be confused by that statement but, if I painted left handed, that is the position I'd hold the palette in with my right hand. :blobcatgiggle:

@nprofile…mexe For complicated reasons, it's not easy for me to see the mural at the same time I'm typing this. If I recall correctly, the top tool is a wave rake and the one just below it is a pick. Both are used in picking locks although using the rake isn't really considered picking.
There's an Easter Egg that's true for all of the hand tools on the mural that applies to the picks themselves too but that part's pretty silly.
