Forgot to post this in the moment, but at around 11:45 local time, I had already:
- woken quite late
- sanitized my dental appliance
- stretched
- consumed TWO short podcasts
- cooked & eaten a hot stovetop meal
- taken lots of drugs
- accidentally annoyed my spouse
- intentionally annoyed my cats
- knocked like three things off my todo list
and it wasn’t even noon yet! #Sunday

Paramiko 5.0.1 and 5.1.0 are out! A few bugs squashed in the former, and our first post-quantum update (a key exchange algorithm) in the latter. Thanks to all the folks who contributed/reported/etc!

wow, for once, problems I was having with an arcane Linux distro tool wasn’t my own fault for using or configuring it wrong, but a legitimate no-foolin’ stop-the-world bug in the tool itself.
Grabbed the ‘dev’ release of said tool with the fix in it, and now NUC go brrrrrr 🤣
(because said tool was #Gentoo Catalyst aka “build yourself a stage or ISO archive”, and I’m exactly the kind of idiot who likes building custom installer ISOs/etc)

I should probably reserve _some_ judgement for after more than like 30% of my usual tooling is installed, but man. This temporary-ish #Gentoo #Linux install on a like 6yo i7 NUC just absolutely /flies/ compared to my local macOS terminal sessions (either my MBA or my work MBP, both M3's I think) or NixOS/Arch on this same NUC or its cousins.
Honestly slightly surprised that locally-targeted compiler optimizations/etc can still make such a difference, especially when the 'average' distributed binary isn't exactly still built for i386. Eg IIRC Arch distributes x86_64-v3 or whatever.

Futzing my way through a #Gentoo #Linux install. Partly as a refresher, partly just to get something on disk so I can build x86-64 ISOs w/o cross-compiling (which has proven quite unstable in Docker on a Mac).
With caveats that my memory of mid-2000s Gentoo is full of holes, and the distro hasn't been sitting still: it feels like the stripped-down ethos of Arch, but if Arch was /significantly/ more mature (which is funny as Arch is no spring chicken).
The profile tree, USE flags, masking/unmasking & nearly every setting being available both globally and/or per-package, the 'news' output, varied tools for juggling config files, the amount of detail in post-install messages, the color in everything from `emerge` output to man pages (!).

Looks like I have just about 6 months to try out alternatives to #1Password if I want to get on the #Drop1Password train 🤔 will probably wait a bit (as in: a day or two tops) to see if they reply directly to my email thread first, though, so I can then reply to that with "alright then, just canceled".
As always, my inability to get shit done stays winning: I hadn't yet integrated `op` with my Linux homelab systems, so I won't technically be 'missing' that part of their ecosystem if I migrate off…
I might look at BitWarden et al instead of just assuming Apple Passwords is 'it', though I have to assume the cross-platform, mobile, etc story is not as good on the former.
(A huge problem w/ the latter, vendor lock-in ASIDE, is that the quality of the apps is directly tied to OS version, and I'm intentionally behind on macOS again because UGH)

Claude Code (bear with me) has all these dumb little gewgaws & animations & "sorta slick, sorta annoying" TUI behaviors – none of this shit is germane to its use case.
However! The overall effect seems precisely like the AV presentation of casino games - their barrage of flashing lights, noises, and music. It tickles your lizard hindbrain, a constant pitter-patter of dopamine hits.
Those are literally designed to be attention-grabbing, focus-keeping & habit-forming, by (evil) psychologists. One imagines the same is true with chatbot UIs.
(Thoughts brought to you by my daily "what inane, mostly metatextual questions can I ask Claude Code so I don't get fired for zero usage statistics" meditation. Today's has been investigating if you can turn any of this shit off. Answer: of course not.)

2020ish: I get into NixOS. Am excited to use it to build my homelab.
2023ish: NixOS community goes up in flames. I switch back to (btw I use) Arch Linux. Am excited to use it to build my homelab.
2026: Arch Linux (ok; mostly AUR, but that's one of the big draws) is almost literally drowning in malware and similar attacks.
I start considering going back to my roots (Debian) even though that implies nontrivial backport/build labor. Am starting to wonder if I'll ever actually have a homelab.

Wondering whether quad/octocopter drones might ever take over from these cable-hung spidercams I’m seeing at the World Cup games.
Sounds like skycam/spidercam type systems unsurprisingly use conductive cables and thus derive power and transmission capabilities from them, as well as the motility. Seems like it’d be a VERY long time before drone battery tech would be able to seriously compete with that, unless you had a whole fleet of them constantly rotating throughout the match or something.

Lots of lucky ten thousand folks discovering today that CloudFlare are amoral schmucks and always have been.
Utterly unsurprising that the "wow no we can't take obvious hate crime websites offline, think of the free speech!" folks happily host botnet marketers.

2026-05-03 17:14:23 UTC

Idly wondering how folks who are deep into personal web archiving (i.e. keeping full clones of pages or sites they've bookmarked) handle sharing those snapshots with friends or the general public, especially in this age of abusive bot scrapers.
Guessing the answer is "keep it all behind lock and key, and deal with the friction that represents on both ends"? Maybe some form of ephemeral/unguessable/unlisted sharing URL? (and obviously, bespoke tactics like Anubis.)
I'm putting the cart before the horse here, obviously, as I don't even have ArchiveBox or w/e set up yet 😅

I hear the crafting/etc is one of the weaker things but haven't done much yet. However, just from the few hours of #VintageStory I played last month, and this session, I'm salivating at the idea of a game with this level of experience polish + VS's level of systems depth…

Really starting to feel tempted to move my repos to Codeberg or similar.
Yes, that would disrupt the heck out of my “social code graph”, but if I’m already so underwater that I’m not using GH as a feed of “what to work on”, perhaps that wouldn’t be a /large/ downside – and my more advanced, longtime contributors would likely find it a low hurdle.
The upside, of course, would be less of this goddamn Copilot bullshit, to say nothing of how GH’s overall UX has just gone way downhill lately anyhow.
(Another, albeit finite, downside: said migration would itself be an annoying time sink of a project!)

Vibe-coding bespoke solutions to your immediate problem instead of seeking out and collaborating on a sustainable & more-widely-applicable program:
strikes me as equivalent to "next-quarter thinking" where short-term business decisions always win out over long-term ones.
The incentives are understandable, but lead to negative outcomes in the long run.

Like, code that would be absolutely trivial in Python is a bunch of slightly weird looking "gotta toss this into a string, then do Things to it, then call .as_str() for reasons”. I grok about half of why that's necessary (mutability, heap vs stack, etc).
Probably much easier for C heads?

Started watching #Silo on #AppleTV. I hadn’t watched anything on this particular streaming service in a few years.
They added a feature where if you rewind, it automatically turns on subtitles for the rewound part, on assumption you rewound because you missed dialogue.

Deletin' my (already locked to followers-only, and of course backed up locally, as of a while back) tweets. Sayonara, #Twitter.
(Using the free trial of https://redact.dev as linked in some replies to https://social.jacobian.org/@jacob/113483833128767805 - seems to be working so far tho we'll see if it gets rate-limited or craps out.)

@npub1wfj…2ewz somehow I read this initially as implying you /worked/ at Apple and it took a bit to go “oh. No he just means as a user in the walled garden” 😂
