Futzing my way through a #Gentoo #Linux install. Partly as a refresher, partly just to get something on disk so I can build x86-64 ISOs w/o cross-compiling (which has proven quite unstable in Docker on a Mac).
With caveats that my memory of mid-2000s Gentoo is full of holes, and the distro hasn't been sitting still: it feels like the stripped-down ethos of Arch, but if Arch was /significantly/ more mature (which is funny as Arch is no spring chicken).
The profile tree, USE flags, masking/unmasking & nearly every setting being available both globally and/or per-package, the 'news' output, varied tools for juggling config files, the amount of detail in post-install messages, the color in everything from `emerge` output to man pages (!).
