does uxn have a home page or do we have some kind of awesome merveilles list that I could link to? I have an extra slot in the nav of the tomo website I'm working on that I'd like to allocate to one of these.

that kind of collab is super beneficial though. that's why I like pair programming. talking through the issue with a friend almost always results in better patches.

couldn't you just go forget about it for a while and then find a way to independently reproduce the issue starting from a general description? that wouldn't be a clean-room standard tho ig. is that your policy for uxn? or just a personal standard, "I will never use any technical information gained directly or in directly through to use of LLMs"?

Emacs has historically had more structural editing plugins for lisp than other editors. Parinfer in (n)vim is still pretty buggy compared to the og.

I live in the desert with several spiders and a small chihuahua. just the other day we all made eye contact with a coyote who was napping in the dirt over yonder.

nixpkgs is too big to function without clear leadership imo.
maybe I'll be proven wrong in the interim, but I'm not going to keep building on a foundation that makes me uneasy. even if saying so makes someone uncomfortable, or even if my unease is ultimately unfounded!
besides, I'm one person. if my zero likes, zero boosts post can undermine nixpkgs reputation, I definitely shouldn't stick around!

there's probably some gotchas, but I'm down to clown honestly. The supply chain risk with nixpkgs becoming slop and maintainers stepping down because the steering committee is dysfunctional is getting to me. better my efforts go toward a real community project than that mess.
I'd probably think differently if forking nixpkgs was a reasonable thing to do. I love that monstrosity, but I can't afford to keep one as a pet.

based on what I'm reading, #guix can do everything I do with #nixos except I have to install fewer plugins? I don't even have to enable experimental features, wao!

true!
Mostly curiosity, I'm interested to see how far something like scheme can be pushed towards efficiency and what trade-offs have to be made to keep memory and CPU use under control.
I think prescheme and nanopass are pretty interesting bits of compiler tech and I'm fond of the idea of "compiling by transforming". Though, to get what I want I'm definitely going to have to diverge from standard scheme quite a bit. I'm resisting for the sake of fully analyzing the question and the stdlib.

I'll admit that rust is cool, but it isn't exactly the vibe I'm going for.
Then again, I could spend _even more_ time on fundamentals and make a dis vm clone in rust and then write a memory efficient scheme-ish on top of *that*.

I have a feeling this may be inherent to scheme since its a very dynamic language. We may need prescheme to get lispy with systems programming for smol devices.

2026-08-26 19:19:28 UTC

one thing I'm running into writing apps in chicken #scheme is that the memory use is kinda high, which isn't ideal for running on small systems.
my mental prototype for a smol pc is a rpi 3b+: 4-core, 1g ram. So a little util that takes up 50-100MiB starts looking expensive if there's going to be a whole desktop written in the same language.
I want to use a scheme dialect for my desktop shell, but I might need to use a different substrate. gambit or chez maybe..

is loops open source? Iirc that's a proprietary project of some kind. Can there be more than one?
Not that it shouldn't be worked on, but webtorrent is a pretty weak protocol. I would believe that peertube can hack it if most clients used a real torrent client though. We already know that large scale streaming video is possible thanks to the pirate community, but you might notice that the backbone of that system is specifically not webtorrent. 😉

One of the things I'm excited to build into Beemworld is a side quest where you find / build a Varvara console so you can play the various ROMs that are sprinkled around the world. For those that aren't redistributable, I have some ideas for loading your IRL ROMs into the game world.
The overall concept of the game is like a couch coop avi chat with a bunch of casual and mostly non-competitive mini-games. I'm building it engine first in chicken scheme with p2p multiplayer. I have plans for LAN2LAN multiplayer, but that's much less important since the emphasis is on couch coop play and making a cozy world.

I fancy the notion that finished software can / should exist.
I reckon capitalism is a large factor, but I wonder what other edges keep the softwares churning.

We never had the resources to build our bus camper, but we still try to organize our life based on the same ideas of simplicity, modularity, and frugality.
Sometimes I still daydream about an ultralight solar powered camper that blends with ideas about a landship. Maybe some day, maybe sooner in CAD if I ever learn how to use it.

I don't think you can, you just clone it using git.
Fork is more like a UI affordance for making a new git repo and then cloing the contents of another repo plus a pointer to upstream. The feature you want would be something like "federated fork" since it would need a flow similar to remote follow on the fediverse to establish the context for the fork and such.
"Clone is VS Code" is pretty friendly though since you don't have to copy paste the repo url or run git manually.

hello Merveilles!
I have been here before, but I thought I'd do another #introduction since its been some years since I've been around. I could be described as one of those manic pixie dream girls. I'm definitely traumatized, but I'm doing better of late so I'm going to try out this online community thing again.
I have too many interests to list, but they include art, science, food, people, language, dance, and telecommunications (and technology in general I suppose). There are several links in my profile if you're interested.
Lately my specific focus has been on #nix / #nixos and getting my pile of computers at home doing something useful so I can turn my attention back onto mobile adhoc mesh networking and doing art/music projects and kissing cute people.
