Convertible laptops—there are two styles I find interesting:
• MS Surface (tablet plus detachable keyboard+trackpad)
• Lenovo Yoga (screen turns 360°)
Does anyone have experience with those?

Instead of our syncing being cloud-based, it would nice if it were P2P-based.
Benefits:
• More robust: Works even when the server is down, the internet is down (e.g. local connection problems) or no internet is available (in remote areas)
• Can be used to back up the synchronized data.

Does anyone know?
“We now have better support for account handle changes for accounts hosted elsewhere on the fediverse. You can’t change your Mastodon handle for now, but this is a necessary step towards being able to do so in the future.”
Is this about changing the server-local user name? Or about supporting server-independent handles?

@nprofile…7yqc It’s just a silly experiment: People always try to replace as much JavaScript as possible with HTML (which is indeed a good idea). I wanted to do the opposite. 😀

2/ My impression: In *some* ways, tech has peaked: Do we really need to constantly surveil, measure and control every last aspect of our lives? Do we really need the constant notifications, upgrades and quickly outdated devices? More of our focus should go towards maintenance, repairability, recyclability and longevity of devices.

2026-05-15 18:59:16 UTC

I’m still processing what’s going on in tech at the moment. I used to feel at home in that world. It used to feel incredibly creative and positive. Now it’s increasingly full of bugs, dark addicting patterns and AI slop.
I’m not sure how to change that. We need to provide a better vision for the future than what’s currently pushed by most tech companies. They have a lot of power and (e.g.) many politicians listen to them. That’s why different narratives are important.

@nprofile…zjtt Just in case you didn’t know: Mastodon now supports true quote posts (with a much better UX in the web app – no more visiting another website to see the quoted post).

Using Cloudflare for static file hosting:
• Cloudflare Pages is easy to use but forwards requests from /home.html to /home (which I don’t want because it changes existing URLs)
• Solution: Switch to Workers where forwarding can be switched off.
• New problem: / isn’t forwarded to /index.html anymore. Not sure how to fix that yet.
• A % in a filename caused an error with an obscure message and prevented deployment.
I may not be their target audience. I just want simple static file hosting.

What are your thoughts on adding #ActivityPub support to a blog? I feel like blogs are different and should be separate from social media(?)
A simple solution for letting people comment on a blog post could be embedding a post including all of its replies. However, for blogs, you want comments to survive as long as possible and Fediverse servers generally don’t guarantee that.

Fediverse servers (Mastodon etc.) don’t have global views of the network:
• Pro: Much easier to set up independent servers because data is retrieved as needed.
• Con: Discovery (search etc.) is limited, especially on small servers (which don’t see much of the network).
Solution: Fediverse search engines. https://www.fediscovery.org

Node.js—I just learned that there is:
npm init --init-type=module --yes
But it doesn’t help much. I’ll probably continue to use `npm init` without that flag and change "commonjs" to "module" manually.
It feels like npm could switch to "module" as the default now.

I don’t understand why exceptions are so widely disliked:
• Rust’s Option<> is nice for handling errors we want to take care of immediately.
• However, there are also many cases where going up the call stack is a feature, not a bug—e.g.: https://exploringjs.com/js/book/ch_exception-handling.html#motivation-throwing-and-catching-exceptions
Has anyone written about this?

@nprofile…hjan asks a good question: “Why can’t HTML alone do includes?”
https://frontendmasters.com/blog/seeking-an-answer-why-cant-html-alone-do-includes/
Pure-HTML includes would help with a static site generation issue:
• Whenever you change the (cross-page) user interface, you have to regenerate the whole blog.
• If the shared bits were stored in separate files, only those would have to be regenerated.

@nprofile…kgua I know this would take a long time to implement (probably years) but is portable identity (*) a long-term goal for Mastodon?

• Etc.

• All server-side runtimes can now run TS directly: Deno, Bun, Node.js.
• Isolated declarations have made emitting .d.ts faster. https://2ality.com/2025/01/tsconfig-json.html#isolatedDeclarations

2025-01-17 15:36:14 UTC

#TypeScript: I’m writing a blog post about enums and alternatives. As it turns out, my previous thinking was too complicated. Things become relatively simple if you consider 3 use cases:
1. Namespace for constants with primitive values
2. Custom type with unique values
3. Namespace for constants with object values
Per use case, these are desirable features:
* Exhaustiveness checks
* Members can be enumerated

@nprofile…9g5v From what I know about Bluesky’s team, I believe that their intentions are good.
But, eventually, they’ll have to make money.
Upside: People have moved once (from Twitter to Bluesky). Moving again is going to be much easier and the Fediverse isn’t going anywhere.
Only potential downside of ActivityPub that isn’t relatively easy to fix: It *may* not scale as well—no one knows at the moment. I’m curious: Could AP handle (e.g.) Taylor Swift joining the Fediverse?

Bluesky says that: “Never lose access to your followers or data.”
However, I don’t think that’s true. Can someone confirm?
Even in a scenario where there are multiple Relay/AppView/Labeler services, if you move to a different service:
• You can only follow a user if their PDS is crawled by your service.
• A user can only follow you if your PDS is crawled by their service.

#Mastodon web app usability issue: A server is both a web app and hosts posts.
Main issue: If a post links to a post on another server, clicking on the link leaves the web app. Two measures can help:
• The upcoming feature “quote posts” will ensure that you stay in the web app if you click on the quoted post.
• Maybe: Keep web app & post pages separate (with the latter being mostly static). That would make it more obvious to users that the two are different.

Challenge for our JavaScript newsletter @nprofile…74fn:
Since leaving Twitter, new subscriptions and ads have decreased significantly. We’re still operating at a loss.
Any ideas? One thing we may have to try is cross-posting to a Bluesky account. Sadly, reach matters in this case.

– Many don’t know what they mean (esp. newcomers & nonnative speakers). They can foster group identities but also exclude people.
– My arguments become stronger because I have to be explicit about what I want to say.

* The [fosstodon.org] button provides help, but it’s not immediately clear that it does that.

I’m working on a blog post about Mastodon’s weaknesses and what is being done to fix them. During my research I was pleasantly surprised by how much interesting work is happening in the Fediverse space:
* Live Fediverse analytics: https://fedidb.org
* Fediverse info and directory (crawled automatically): https://fediverse.info
* List of Fediverse platforms: https://fediverse.party/en/miscellaneous/
* Interviews with people who work on the Fediverse and other decentralized networks: https://dot-social.simplecast.com/

1/ Good blog post by @npub1t34…f3hv about an ongoing conflict in the web dev community. AFAICT, it’s fair to both sides.

Important Node.js feature: --experimental-require-module
It lets you require() ESM modules—which means that new packages can publish ESM only and still support CommonJS.
I’m curious to know how well that actually works in practice—let us know your experiences in this area!

@npub13q3…hr6l Just in case: Pandoc does Markdown and seems to have good support for scientific citations. It supports a variety of target formats, including HTML & LaTeX..

@npub1pgs…gyss I’m curious: Can you explain what you mean by “thanks to you”?

Has anyone tried out Pop Shell on Ubuntu #Linux?
https://github.com/pop-os/shell
I’m mostly interested in its ability to “stack” windows (turn them into tabs while their panes occupy the same space. Is that useful in practice?

If you need a *simple* task runner (think a few aliases for shell commands): What do you use?
I’m switching between the following two but was wondering what else is out there:
1. make (Makefile)
2. npm run (package.json)
Benefit of #2 is support for cross-platform commands (e.g. via shx) and locally installed packages.

@npub13q3…hr6l I don’t know if that makes any sense but maybe someone (such as Igalia) could be crowd-funded to improve browser support for SVG.

I’ve made my decision:
– I’m getting rid of my old iPad and won’t buy a new one.
– I’ve grown to dislike its closed OS and unrepairability. Alas, MS & Android also have downsides.
– I won’t get another tablet, but a Framework laptop to see how Linux works for me for daily use.
– I’ll keep iPhone & MacBook Pro (for now).
I’m investigating how to replace Apple’s syncing services (calendar, contacts, photos, notes, etc.). Proton looks interesting: https://proton.me

@npub1238…s9zf What’s the best way to do polyfills though? A module that exports the global value (if it exists) or its own implementation (otherwise)?

Yesterday, a 30-year-old sci-fi TV series (#Babylon5) gave me an idea for a better Siri voice command: I had used “lights on” and “lights off” until I noticed that in that show, they only said “lights” to toggle between on and off. Lo and behold, that also worked with Siri. 😀
