Can't help thinking about the possibility of creating a non-profit that provides a proper web presence to community groups and small non-profits.
We'd offer a website with social functionality (events, signups, etc..), email newsletter sending, etc.. This wouldn't be a lot of custom work. Just reuse and redeploy the same tech over and dover again using different themes and assets.
People would fund this non-profit because they don't want FB to continue its stranglehold on society, which happens in part because orgs use FB Pages instead of regular web solutions because it's easier.

There are 6 #repaircafe for 13 Million people in the LA/ OC area. I love that these exist but I wish there were so many more.
Also there is some irony in the tech choices for these orgs: lots of FB pages, Insta, etc.. I understand how they got there, but it's painful to witness.

My Logitech MX Ergo Trackball buttons are not working correctly anymore. They don't stay in the "down" state consistently, so dragging and dropping, and selecting text are a pain. Otherwise it's perfect.
I hate buying a new one. It's only a few years old, and it's a "premium" device. How come the buttons can't last? Do we not have the technology to make buttons that last?
Repairing is possible, but I'd have to buy a whole soldering iron kit and try my hand at something I've never done. And then how long before the soldering iron gets used again?
I want to #repair so I don't create unnecessary trash, but for that I have to buy more stuff that likely becomes trash some day.
I'm hoping to find a repair cafe near me now.

@npub1m8t…zu6r I think an open model in the cloud might be a better approach? Local models demand so much hardware. With prices and things shifting constantly is it a wise investment?
@npub1ppv…dmt7 pointed out he runs his on a "green" service, which is a nice touch:

Have you given Saulala by [@petrikas](https://mastodon.art/@petrikas ) a try? For me it hits the right balance of simple interface and convenience (it works on my phone or any computer with a browser) while still allowing me a lot of creativity. There are things it can't do, but I see them as welcome limitations that prevent me from spending hours in front of a computer messing with an image.

Love this post by [@moh_kohn](https://mastodon.scot/@moh_kohn )
https://mohkohn.co.uk/writing/html-first/
It shows so clearly that plain HTML and some JS and CSS are powerful enough for most tasks we do online, and result in superior experiences for everyone.
It's this kind outcome that drives me to build BackflipHTML.

Is meetup dot com still the go-to, or are there other places where these things get organized? I'm hoping to go to some as well here in socal.

I've been thinking along similar lines. I'd be interested to hear more about your experience with Synology's Git server. It's pretty bare bones, right? Like just pure git repo hosting if I understand correctly.

Any idea what that black half-disc with white spots is? I haven't seen a B-1 with that before. The white things look like some sort of hardware protruding out.

Yeah that's rough. It always feels sketchy to run large and popular libraries and frameworks on the backend. I guess React Server Components is the new Wordpress.
This is a situation where using Deno with minimal permissions to run server side JS, or deploy different services in containers could limit the damage. Other option for when you regain your courage is to run dynamic stuff in serverless functions as much as possible.

Not criticizing @npub1mvj…jlw0 here but I think one challenge with making self-hosting more popular is that most of the people who talk about it have rather complicated setups and are frequently making changes (that's how you get the content for the podcast!) This creates an impression that self-hosting is inherently demanding and time-consuming.
Which, to be fair, it definitely can be.
But it's not as bad as it might sound like if you listen/watch all the die-hards out there.
Some self-hosters see it as a hobby ("home-labbers"), and some do it out of a desire to escape the clutches of the cloud. But the distinction isn't obvious to new-comers.

Also, inspired by this post by @npub10fa…rdvy I made the Navigation menu toggle in mobile/narrow viewports work without JS. Neat!
https://fosstodon.org/@rauschma/114099045695366948
However to make it more accessible I set aria-expanded to true or false, which you can't do with CSS. So I had to use JS for that. So JS is a requirement for accessibility apparently.

I improved the layout of the https://dropserver.org/docs docs pages. It's no longer quite as embarrassing. I hand-coded it from scratch to force me to improve my HTML and CSS skills, which are a bit dated. Lots more to learn though!
Please click around and report any problems, thanks!

What is the relation between type stripping and JSX and htm? (Sorry I don't use JSX so I don't know how it's actually implemented.) Is it just the trend of moving away from things that need special transpilers to things that work natively in JS?

@npub1mvj…jlw0 Thanks for hosting the tailscale Q&A. The reason I was asking about moving a node to a new machine by copying the tailscaled files is because tailscale associates things with that node that I can't easily reproduce from tsnet. In particular shared users. If I recreate the node, I lose my sharees and have to reshare manually. Not great.
I'm well aware of the 12-factor app and "state" but there are limitations imposed by the tailscale side.

Interesting! I didn't know. Do Websockets work in serverless?

2024-09-16 16:44:12 UTC

Server-Sent Events are under-appreciated. I get that people are scared of them because each ties up one of six connections (browser-wide) to the domain. But that's only under http 1.1. Under http/2 you get 100 usually. So no biggie?
The advantages are: amazingly simple API. You can have something useful, with automatic reconnects, in a few lines of JS. #WebSockets almost always involve loading a 3rd party library to take care of all the tricky bits.

nb: they don't accept software. You'll have to find another place to drop off your unused bits.

Matt Holt, creator of #Caddy server, is considering releasing his other project Timelinize as open source. His reasoning for why he thought it should be closed and why he's changing his mind are all too familiar to me.
It's very hard to make consumer software and services while balancing openness and sustainability. We really need to crack this nut. If we did we could have so many nice things.
