I read through a great article series about the history of modules written by @nprofile…ckap and its also part of his own story. I highly recommend it.
https://kriskowal.com/tags/modules/
It all culminates in the fantastic writeup in the last article of the series called https://kriskowal.com/designing-modules/
He is very kind to the imho epic failure of ESM that won not based on merit and I personally think it is partly responsible for breaking the steam the open source movement especially around javascript had before ESM

We have a choice previous generations didnt: alternatives to systems controlled by billionaires.
We can use money they can’t print, peer-to-peer tools to organize outside Big Tech, and open AI models.
Yet the mainstream is far form embracing that.
The flip side of this:
If we don’t, the billionaire class will read it as consent and assume we are happy with what they do and wont hold back print & spend money without limit to direct our future.
Being passive now empowers the billionaire class

hmm - depending on the benevolence of our AI overlords - ...AI could be a great divide & conquerer so that we cant agree on anything
...but it could also be a great unifier, by relaying different opinions - translating misunderstandings and cannonizing or normalizing arguments, phrases, wording... so the misunderstandings get minimized.
...which might leave us all with differences, but at least not because of misunderstandings.
The big issue is AI control via very few overlords

i guess inhabe to start ignoring `npm install` and tell everyone to exclusively use `npm ci` now and then use `package-lock.json` which currently is part of all my `.gitignore` files ...what a dumpster fire

yeah, the point is to be able to decide for yourself what to work on, with whom to work or even decide something new.
Its a mindset.
And then you just have to leverage it to build relations .... some employees might enjoy more space, but the point is whether they are free to change the frame in any way they want ....based on purpose and what they find interesting.
And they can then also own and co-own the means of production and grow it with others.
This is hard in some environments

@nprofile…j05z ...and if that gets detected by users, they fight an uphill battle to get it recognized, leave alone correct it and more than that there is alqays plausible deniability by the controlling company that it was just a mood, an occasional accident or hallucination and for sure wont happen again.
The true problem is how totalitarian or authoritarian it is and thus how much unchecked power with no accountability it grants, which always leads to corruption and supression of individual rights

imho the question is irrelevant.
More relevant seems the sheer numbers of users and how they use and trust it and the fresh high quality information they feed it so AI owners have exclusive access to it to further advance/train models while the public internet gets spammed and degraded so competitin has a harder time of accessing data to train competitors.
Now AI controlling companies can promote ideas and services, ignore others, drop or hallucinate or distrot on purpose to steer us

every business transparent and legally forkable - avoids lock in and allows every ussr/customer/member/.. to see and discuss based onnfacts if maintainers seem scammy or assholes in other ways to cordinate a fork.
so as long as maintainers or stewards do a proper job, users might stay and no lock in because anything can always be forked.

You can kinda ignore all of it and "blame the stupid majority of voters" ...or actually look into the deeper issues that will sadly require us to compare reality with our idealized version

You oversimplify by saying this is the system working as intended

i love what spritely is doing.
what comes to mind in this context is `dat` and `endo` ...same/similar goals, but based on javascript.

@nprofile…fxg8 does that code snippet cause the animation too or just the drawing of one particular frame?

A summary of current geopolitics.
Its a quite different narrative from what you will find in popular mainstream news.
Its quite long, but that is because it goes through everything in quite a lot of detail, because otherwise it would be difficult to really understand where the takes are coming from.

imagine. instead of users using apps and controlling their data and allowing other users to access their data as needed based on what apps are being used, ....for some reason, we need to have the "relays" in between, which (whoever operates them) does finally not need to deal woth the burden of storing all that user data... what a smart move by VCs.

maybe, but imho we are literally in the transition away from the petro dollar imho.... but definitely there 🙂 ..feel free to extend, but i'm quite interested to see how this picture might change in the future and what we can do to improve it instead of it getting worse 🙂

thats what limited liability & offshore shadow banking is all about.
But even without that.
The ultrawealthy capitalist class can always take out loans to do whatever and refinance them with future even larger loans ad infinitum. ... they never actually have to repay anything like normal people do.
its essentially the biggest scam/ponzi scheme of human history - thats capitalism in a nutshell

it always works out for them.
the question is if it works out for us.
we always pay the price, they never do.
if they succeed in creating something they own and we use (e.g. amazon, uber, airbnb, instagram...) we use it and pay for it with money or indirectly by them selling our data and we get ads.
if they dont succeed, prices rise and houses etc... become even more unaffordable.
they never have problems. they print to bail themselves out if needed.

...they essentially use their capitalist money printing class privilege to prevent progress in order to "save/consolidate their power" ...the costs for their printing is what we all pay for via inflation, including unaffordable house prices.
The rich print money and spend it immediately to buy up stuff, and if that increases prices they just print more, so they can always afford it all, but we who cant print lose out

yes.
but by doing this all the time as a "modus operandi", ...for funding startups for their nepo babies or bailing out the various companies in their portfolio, or to bribe/buy politics, or to campaign/compete against independent successful alternative businesses, or by bribing/buying the "core people" in an alternative competing business or straight out buy the entire successful alternative business and integrating that into their means of production ...

okay, maybe that is a misunderstanding or i'm not sure what you mean in your response.
the capitalist class does not "print physical cash" - its not literal money printing.
They take out loans directlt or indirectly, which mints digital bank deposit money, but at ever faster and larger scales and it wont get paid back. they just take out larger loans next time to roll over previous ones... this de facto printing is the essence of the capitalist class privilege 🤷‍♀️

billionaires or the capitalist class borrows against their assets (=prints fiat money) to fund and grow their ventures, monitor the economy to see what grows in value and buy that.
If the fail, they are shielded by limited liability of their various legal vehicles (companies) to get rid of debt, ...but mostly its structured to be refinanced not repaid.
