The stick is very, very simple. Ban the collection, use and resale of cross-site behavioral tracking for advertising purposes. GDPR has teeth, if we just enforce it.
That one change, and Meta, TikTok and Google lose all their traffic leverage. Of course that's precisely why lobbyists want to ensure politicians think it is impossible to enforce.

This wasn't the first illegal Google project in Finland, they've broken preservation laws at their existing data center site as well. It's an intentional bet that sanctions will be minimal, and environmental assessments come back easier for a site which no longer has any environmental values to protect.

Two years for Zalushnyi, who was blamed for the failed 2023 counteroffensive and clashed with Zelenskyi on military recruitment and use of media. Two and a half for Syrskyi, who would have continued if not for Zelenskyi’s ill-judged dismissal of Fedorov leading to public escalation. Two years for Drapatyi? If he’s successful, he will become too popular. If he’s not, the war will grind on.

A “model” is a large matrix of weights to infer outputs given a set of inputs. It can not break out of a sandbox unless equipped with an execution environment intentionally weaponised to provide it hostile execution capability. But because it is a weighted random number generator, it will be able to iterate through all inputs and outputs to find all combinations of potential results.

Air heat pumps have for ages been generally recognized as the cheapest retrofit install to save energy during the Finnish heating season. There was suspicion they could not produce enough energy during the very coldest time, which technically is true but we'd use fireplaces then anyway.

It reads like someone of median intelligence and no moral compass has gotten a lot of press training to stay away from inflammatory statements since his Munich appearance. But no strategic briefing has stuck - assuming he's actually gotten any.

Personally, I would characterize it not as a struggle against "the West", but as one against russia's own inevitable demise. The war is simply a mafia boss using the only tools he knows: violence and theft.

In the Finnish system, there are a lot of identity providers as every bank plus a couple of other institutions are trusted to perform strong ID. There is no transparency as to what data they provide to the authenticating party. The process is the same by which one logs on to the banking services, which does create habit, but also exposes the bank process to cases which have nothing to do with banking.

Ehkä parasta kuitenkin on, että öyhöservereillä porukka voi keskenään öyhöttää niin ei tule pakottavaa tarvetta muualle etsiytyä. Hajautuksen myötä "kohteiden" määrä kasvaa.

Elon wants to divide Europe and is using X to sow hate. Threads and Bluesky aren't overtly hostile, but they're not European either. Fediverse is. Global, but centered in Europe. Federated, independent, sovereign.

Depends entirely how deep you go. 5-50 meters is very much a cool 10 C. My building's heat wells go to 300 meters but that's not because it's hot there - just a stable year round temperature. You have to go much deeper to get to heat.
No one will invest a billion to a data center they only get to run when there's excess electricity and a user for waste heat. That's why they're going to hurt the grid, anywhere they are built.

Basically this argues that rather than space, data centers should be placed underground in environments where the ground absorbs a lot of heat. Funny how Elon hasn't yet retasked Boring Company.

Social networks, the communities, are important. They turned to social media because the companies building SNS realized that by becoming media instead of networks they can tap into advertising revenue streams. We'd be better off if social media died and social networks returned.

Good to keep in mind, a lot of the horrible shit you see in the world is motivated by fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of having to encounter self biases, fear of past trauma, fear of loss.
Fear is an emotion. You can't rationalize it away. Fear is overcome by safety and empathy.

Great writeup of the Original Sina, Tim! And behind these ones on the list is a long list of the Thousand Papercuts, from misplacing mentions at start of the reply body text (when a perfectly good mention field exists in the protocol) to inability to remember the readers' position in their (reverse chron and random) timeline. The papercuts could be solved by the client, but increase friction all the same.
