I just put out a blog post about how I used AI to make my photo scanner and MIPI camera work on my Fedora Linux system. Check it out for the details. https://blogs.gnome.org/uraeus/2026/10/15/aiandreverseengineerhardware/

So I also asked Claude if it could add functionality to test the wiring inside the ethernet to better help me understand what was wrong, which it did. Although it turned out the ethtool --cable-test support isn't implemented in almost any currently available drivers. And this lead me to conclude that AI is extremely capable in what it knows, but it has zero discernment about the knowledge it got, to for instance say 'yeah, there is an API to do it, but nothing really support it'. #AI #claude

I have a couple of Ethernet sockets at home I was feeling wasn't operating properly. So I got Claude to create a small app for me that I could put on one of my small ARM development boards and which only job would be to over time check the quality of connection on the ethernet port. So the tool worked and I was able to see that for some reason the connection on those two sockets only resolve to 100 instead of 1000.

Want to join our team at Red Hat working on Desktop related Linux technologies? Well we got a job opening now, although this one is a bit special as we require proficiency in Chinese and you will be working out of our Singapore Office. https://redhat.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com/Jobs/job/Singapore/Software-Engineer---Display-i18n--Linux--C-C----Mandarin-_R-058330-1

There is a big push for exemptions for Linux system for the Age verification laws, but this is a case where we need to be very careful we don't accidentally shoot ourselves in the foot. If for instance application developers of commercial application still have to comply this might mean that an excemption becomes a reason not to support Linux with their application. #linux #fedora #redhat

Claude is core dumping on me repeatedly, but now I am asking Claude to debug itself and give me a reproducer if possible. Self healing software?

Never been a big sports guy, but I just spent and insane amount of money to take the family to see Norway play France in the World Cup here in Boston. Felt that I couldn't sit out the chance when they are playing this close to where I live. #NORWAY #ErlingHaaland

I wrote a blog post about how maybe AI could be a good tool to improve the quality of patents approved. https://blogs.gnome.org/uraeus/2026/01/21/can-ai-help-fix-the-patent-system/ #linux #patents

For anyone working on hardware testing and enablement using AI tools I found that you can buy these cheap WIFI electric sockets called 'Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini'. They allow you to turn power off and on using a simple python script. So after I added instructions to use that python script to my CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md script the AI just cycles the power when needed to ensure the device is in a good state.

I don't hate Heathrow like some, but sitting around at terminal 3 for 9 more hours waiting for my connection to Prague is a bit boring 😀

Suddenly got hit with was is called Benign positional vertigo. Not sure why it is called Benign because there is little that is benign about it. I got a choice between spinning world and motion sickness or taking my medication and feeling very drowsy :(
Hopefully things get sorted soon and things go back to normal.

Have to admit I am not very concerned about the 'controversy' over the new female silver surfer in the upcoming Fantastic 4 movie, but as an old Silver Surfer comics fan I am a little surprised that they didn't just use Nova if they wanted a female herald. She was a female herald of Galactus and looked a lot like the silver surfer except the surfboard and being more gold than silver. And the surfboard is a bit cheesy anyway. #FantasticFour

@nprofile…2qzq I think AI and LLMs are just a tool at the end of the day, I think the main problem with them is that their current implementation mostly expects you to share your data with someone, with Granite its all local and thus in your control.

With todays exciting Fedora Workstation 42 release out I also wrote a blog post outlining some of the cool stuff in this release.

When I posted about the open jobs in Red Hat's desktop team yesterday I also learned just how completely the open source community has moved to Mastodon. Despite in theory having twice the number of followers on Twitter (probably mostly dead accounts at this point), I basically got no interaction with the post there, but I got a ton of activity around the post here. Not so many open source folks on Bluesky either, mostly here.

@nprofile…44pz extensions.gnome.org got a bucketload of pre-made extensions, similar to what Firefox offers. So there is both a lot of pre-canned extensions and the option for people to learn some coding and make their own.

Some cool HDR news today, Martin Stransky who works on Firefox for us at Red Hat, mentioned in his status report today that he got HDR support working in Firefox on his own system. Still more work needed, but hopefully we can have a HDR ready Firefox shipping in the next Fedora Workstation release! #linux #fedora #firefox #hdr #color

A little #PIpeWire tip I learned today. If you want to use OBS Studio with a Google Meet session in Firefox. Start OBS Studio first, if not Firefox will set a format for the camera that OBS Studio do not support and you get a black box in OBS Studio. The other way is fine.
Wim is working on a proper solution, adding video conversion to PipeWire, but for now the ordering do matter.

With the work being done on the display stack around HDR and color management there is a risk that some of the older stuff fall to the side. Is there anyone reading this using or relying on the ICC color profiles for printers? Is it useful? I been told it basically isn't, but I would love to hear a counterargument if anyone got one. #linux #printing #fedora #colormanagement

Great news from @JanGrulich today. PipeWire camera patches are merged in Chromium and should be part of Chromium 127 (unless testing turns up something). This means both major browsers should have @pipewirep camera support soon. https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/c/chromium/src/+/3308882 #linux #fedora #chrome
