I finally made it out to an event at ADE this year!
I've lived here eight years and yet I've been busy every October! This year I decided I was not going to miss it, and I went to check out Amsterdam Trance Event at Panama. It was a good time!
It still kinda blows my mind that the "niche" music I used to spin at raves in the 90s is "mainstream" music in Amsterdam.
I really need to get out to festivals more often. :)

Season 2 of Day Pass is here, starting with Kobe, Japan!
Day Pass is a public transit travel show, where I explore a different city each episode, visit some interesting cultural and urbanist locations, all while riding as much public transit as possible.

It's become nearly impossible to find a spot to lock up in De Pijp these days, and sometimes the sidewalks are even hard to walk down, because of all the parked bicycles. I'd hate to have to travel there in a wheelchair.
To help, the handhaving are removing bicycles that have been parked for two months or longer in Zuid.
This is important, in order to keep the sidewalks accessible, but they also need to step up the removal of car parking to make more room for everyone!

I was researching the latest on the (Fake) London BRT project, and came across this article.
The owner of this horrific strip-mall is claiming that the BRT "will result in an approximate financial loss of at least $12,000,000.00 minimum".
Why? Because cars won't be able to turn left into their shitty strip mall from one of the two stroads it's on. 🤮

I've been fascinated by these recent videos about the YouTuber "Data Slayer" by 🮘 rfnx.
The "take somebody else's content, run it through an LLM, and claim it's your own" grift has even come to niche open-source projects.
I guess LLM make even niche grifts cost-effective.
It's great to to see this "AI" technology opening up all these new markets that never existed before.

Season one was a "pilot", and we didn't really know what the show would become. But this time around we knew exactly what we wanted to make and it turned out great!

Almost 15 years ago I used to import and sell a lot of products in the EU.
Dealing with VAT was a pain, but there were sales thresholds and then EU implemented the "one stop shop" to make it easier.
I also used to have to pay WEEE disposal fees, but that was straightforward for the whole EU.
It boggles my mind that these packaging restrictions were brought in without a) a de minimis and b) a single EU-wide registration system.
It's not like they don't already do it for other regulations.

Even Doug Ford has taken credit for building the two new LRT projects in Toronto even though he literally spent years trying to get them cancelled when he was a Toronto city councillor.

The project that isn't fully costed, isn't due to start construction until 2029 or 2030, isn't due to complete until 2041-2044 ... and the federal Conservatives have already said they'll cancel if re-elected.
Nevermind the fact that Ontario has been promising and planning high-speed rail since 1984.

Some people get upset when I say things like, "voting left doesn't guarantee you'll get a good city, but voting right does guarantee that you won't", but it's true.
Whether it's climate denialism, bending over backwards for billionaires, or whatever the fuck this is, the modern conservative movement is fundamentally rotten to the core.
I'm not going to pretend that "vote harder" is the only solution, but if you don't vote left, or don't vote at all, then you're a big part of the problem.

If you read my posts as "we should ban all bikes on trains" then you have problems with reading comprehension.
Yes, you should BE ABLE to take a bicycle on a train sometimes.
That is totally different than "train companies should encourage people to take their bicycles on trains and add extra bike carriages to their trains."
It should be POSSIBLE to bring a bike on a train but a) it should not be encouraged & b) there should be an extra charge to account for the space taken up by the bike.

2026-08-05 04:03:57 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…6385 yes, that makes perfect sense.
I never suggested that bikes should NEVER be brought on trains, just that train companies should not be ENCOURAGING people to bring bicycles on trains.
Of course you should be able to take your bike on a train for the purposes you're suggesting. There should likely be an extra fee for it, given the extra space you're taking up, but sure, it's a perfectly good use-case for taking a bike on a train.

@nprofile…4j24 wtf are you talking about? Bicycles are not the same as luggage jesus christ.

Your response only makes sense if you purposefully ignore the point I'm making.

2026-08-03 15:30:48 UTC

It's amazing how cyclists will make almost exactly the same arguments in favour of riding their private bikes everywhere that car drivers make in favour of driving their private cars everywhere.
At a certain point, private transportation does not scale, and that applies to bicycles too.
Sure, it happens at WAY higher volumes for bikes than for cars, but it does happen.
I don't want trains and stations getting filled up by private bikes. I want more room for people to take public transit.

2026-08-03 15:25:12 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…a52s yes, and?
The solution is to improve OV Fiets (which is what I said), not to consume valuable space on trains and in stations with people's private bikes.
The arguments being made in favour of private bikes in this thread are almost identical to the arguments car drivers use to justify driving their private cars everywhere.
At some point, private transportation doesn't scale, even for bikes.

@nprofile…9lyu Copenhagen is a disaster with bikes on the trains. That's exactly what I *don't* want the Netherlands to become.
When I was there filming Day Pass one carriage was basically full with only 10 bikes there and people were tripping over each other (and their bikes).
But WAY more people cycle in the Netherlands than in Denmark. It would be chaos if the Netherlands encouraged bikes on the train.

2026-08-03 15:16:42 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…ycah That kind of bike share only works in cities with very very low bicycle modeshare. It doesn't scale at the level of the Netherlands.
Even in cities with low modeshare (like Toronto), bikeshare docks become totally full or totally empty. Trucks drive around moving bikes. Dockless doesn't make the situation much better; popular places fill up fast.
Amsterdam tried bikeshare and gave up because it bikeshare bikes were overflowing EVERYWHERE.

- reply

@nprofile…878g @nprofile…l4yh
I rarely take my bike on the train in the Netherlands. I use OV Fiets instead.
In general, I don't think that bikes on trains is scalable; they take up too much space. They also consume elevator time that should be for people who need the elevator.
I would rather see NS expand OV Fiets (add more bikes, electric bikes, bikes with kids' seats, etc.) rather than trying to make it easier to take personal bike on the train.

Sometimes there is progress, but other times there is not.
I've had people point to US cities and show me the 30 miles of new protected bike lanes as an example of progress.
Meanwhile it took them 15 years to build them and in that time they built a new freeway and demolished 300 acres of farmland to build suburbs.
That's not "progress."

@nprofile…s45g thank you!
When I started my channel I was sick of "urbanist" content being so passive and mealymouthed.
Everything was always hedged with a "we don't want to take away anybody's cars but ..." and every argument was buried in so much "data" that nobody who wasn't already a diehard urbanist would sit through it.
It pisses some people off but I literally do not care. It's ridiculous how much better Amsterdam has become in the past 7 years compared to cities that try to pacify drivers.

@nprofile…l2vl I didn't see any noticeable change before or after covid.
There were a couple of places where bikes were moved to the road to make the sidewalks larger for social distancing (which were removed afterwards), but otherwise, plans pretty much proceeded as usual.
I think the cities that did extra urbanism during covid were the ones that could never get anything done, politically, and used covid opportunistically. That wasn't necessary in Amsterdam.

@nprofile…nn5l a great example of this is the infamous "15-Minute Cities" conspiracy, which was started by an anti-climate change group:
https://www.desmog.com/2023/02/16/revealed-the-science-denial-network-behind-oxfords-climate-lockdown-backlash/
They spread lots of disinformation about supposed "climate lockdowns" that were coming and the 15-Minute City was just the one that stuck.
Their goals had nothing to do with cities; good urbanism was just collateral damage.

I knew that media companies would use it to enforce DRM, but I had no idea that John Deere would use it to brick tractors or that Medtronic would use it to stop hospitals from repairing ventilators.

Nebula is putting on a Christmas Charity Stream today to raise money for World Central Kitchen!
Come join the stream and help donate, or just share, like, and join the chat to help promote it!
I plan to hop on the stream later today (with Ray from CityNerd!) but it will be around 7PM Eastern time, as I'll be in Toronto (which means 1AM Amsterdam time).
Hope to see you there!

I had a great conversation on The Urbanist Agenda Podcast with @nprofile…nkz0 , an urban planning consultant and the former chief planner of Vancouver.
Brent regularly works with cities to implement great urbanist projects, and he has some good advice about how to actually achieve positive change in cities.
Check it out on YouTube or your podcast application of choice!

omfg McDonald's Netherlands hired a company to make a shitty AI Christmas ad for them and it's SO BAD.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SROxy7KxFpw
Even if it wasn't AI garbage, why would any company want to associate their brand with being anti-Christmas!?

And here's an American Ford F-350 next to the most popular car in Europe (Dacia Sandero).
There's a reason why we need to do everything we can to prevent people from driving these stupid American trucks in Europe.

So many Europeans are telling me that they've been seeing a lot of the "huge" Ford Ranger trucks appearing in their cities.
Wait until they find out that the Ford Ranger is the small Ford pickup truck, and all of the rest of them are significantly larger. 😬

Copenhagenize has just dropped their list of "Most Bike-Friendly Cities" (the "Copenhagenize Index").
I just got back from another trip to Copenhagen on Saturday, and I still can't understand by what metric Copenhagen deserves to be above Amsterdam. At least for the past few years they've been willing to admit that Utrecht is #1 though! :)
Also, I'm glad to see no American cities made the list time time, because I always thought that was too much "grading on a curve".

Adam Something joined me on the Urbanist Agenda podcast to talk about a new political party in Czechia, the "Motorists for Themselves" party, and it was even crazier than I expected.
The far-right is being actively funded by fossil fuel billionaires and they're attacking climate change legislation ... and good urbanism is being caught in the crossfire.

This wasn't supposed to be an hour and a half long, but as the insane shit piled up, I just couldn't bring myself to cut any of it, because the insanity IS the message here.
I always knew that vehicular cycling as a design philosophy was questionable and based on shaky research. I had NO idea that it was founded on lies and misleading data from the start.

D66 became the largest party in the Netherlands by only 15 thousand votes. 😅
This is why I get annoyed when people say "my vote doesn't matter". Yes it does! Sometimes margins are super-thin like this, but even if they're not, they signal trends that can make a big difference in future elections.

I voted today!
Now that I'm a Dutch citizen I am eligible to vote in the general elections for the first time!
It's comical how big the voting paper (stembiljet) is, but thankfully I'm old enough to have used paper maps, so I was able to easily re-fold it like a pro.

Of all the excuses I get for why we can't build better cities, the laziest one – by far – has got to be "the weather". ☔️
The weather was so bad in Amsterdam the other week that it finally motivated me to make a video about it! 😆

Does anyone know where there's a (signed) woonerf in Amsterdam? I need a short clip of a woonerf, but I need the woonerf sign in the shot.
I thought I has some from my videos of Groningen, but apparently not, and I don't have time to head out there on short notice!
So where can I get a shot of this sign in action in or around Amsterdam?

I was searching stock footage sites for aerial video of VIA Rail and came across this clip of the UP Express in Toronto.
It really shows how desolate the land use is near the Toronto Airport. 🤢

Although it would be very funny (afterwards) to have DHS go through my social media accounts.
"I see here you said American cities are, quote, 'car-infested shitholes'. Could you explain what you meant by that?" 🤣

I had already basically written-off ever going back to the United States ever again, but these (repeated) stories of completely innocent travellers getting detained and deported are the nail in the coffin.

In case you're not familiar with the original "Chattanooga Choo Choo", it's from this 1941 movie, but it's been re-done dozens of times:

I just learned that there was a Dutch 80s remake of the 1940s song "Chattanooga Choo Choo" called "Ik Neem De Eerste Trein Naar Zandvoort"
