My impulse buy of the month: an 1829 octavo, minted by the free state of Guanajuato (my family's home state).
This was working people's coin. Also known as a tlaco, it was one-eighth of a silver real. At the time, it bought someone a basic meal of beans and tortillas. Not far from what a Mission rice and bean burrito costs today.
The coin is worn and costed me less than $25. A modest piece that reminds me of what my family lived through.

Where: 478 Tehama Street, #SanFrancisco
When: tomorrow, Saturday June 14th 7am
The No Kings marches are still ON later in the day; we will have to assess as the day goes on how we mobilize

I've heard about Curve and I'm excited. Until then, cards will be just fine.
And thanks for the tip on the exploit protection compatibility mode. Worked on half the apps that didn't work!

I replaced the stock #Android OS with @npub1kwa…e0nj on my new phone a few days ago, and it’s been great. Around 95% of the apps work as expected, and the added functionality more than makes up for the minor trade-offs. I thought I’d miss tap to pay, but going back to cards has been frictionless. A pleasantly uneventful migration.

The Khalil case is deeply disturbing and serves as a reminder of the delicate relationship foreigners have with their host country, not just in the U.S.
In Mexico, Article 33 of the Constitution grants the President broad authority to expel foreigners and explicitly prohibits (without clear definition) any involvement in Mexican political affairs. This provision has been used to deport individuals for participating in peaceful political protests. In practice, foreigners in Mexico, like those in the U.S., do not have unrestricted freedom of speech.
My advice: If you're a foreigner and eligible for naturalization, don't hesitate and take it.

I wonder how this new birthright order will interact with the Indian Citizenship Act. Are Indigenous people in reservations and rancherías no longer under the jurisdiction of the USA then? Can they lease land to China's PLA then?

Also worth noting that the Andy fellow doesn't even have full signing authority at Proton AG and cannot sign documents or agreements without a signature from another authorized signatory, so that's good. There's adequate oversight.

You can find both the Proton AG and Proton Foundation bylaws on Geneva's registre de commerce website: https://app2.ge.ch/ecohrcinternet/
Attaching the foundation's bylaws here too.

I'm disappointed to see @npub19kd…t56d co-founder and CEO Andy Yen shortsightedly praising the incoming US administration for “standing up for the little guys”.
That said, I am glad that Proton AG's primary shareholder is now a Swiss non-profit foundation, which means the Swiss Confederation and Geneva can intervene if the foundation improperly moves away from its statutory purpose.

And "AI" will not change this truth, because these systems *still* need to be trained and that training still requires badly-paid people to be exposed to terrible, traumatic content.
So when people go and sing the praises of corporate social networks and how their "trust and safety" policies are protecting users, I hope they spare a second to think about the individuals doing the actual moderation.

2024-12-13 04:19:30 UTC

I really wish more people acknowledged that content moderation—whether here in the #fedi or on a corporate social network like #Bluesky—is service work that requires individuals to be exposed to terrible, terrible things. The people performing content moderation are providing care work for society and deserve to be compensated accordingly, but rarely are.
If your experience online is mostly free from racism, abuse, and other forms of violent or extreme content, there's a good chance that it's because someone, somewhere, filtered it out for you.

I think the CEO's assassination is looking more and more like a political act. Maybe the Wikipedia page for "propaganda of the deed" will get a new entry after a 92 year dry spell.

And this brings me back to my initial point: The political establishment's simplistic approach to "Latino" voters is absurd. There is no nuance or desire to engage in a meaningful way and this is the end result.

The headline is "Latino men just didn’t want a woman president," and I don't doubt it's true—for U.S. Latino men who are likely voters.
But it's also important to highlight that nearly 90% of the votes cast in this year's presidential election in Mexico were for a female candidate, resulting in Mexico's first woman president.
Mexico remains a sexist, often violently misogynistic society, but the difference is that the political parties there understood this, campaigned with that knowledge, and successfully overcame it.
Was nobody up here paying attention or what?

Undocumented immigrants will not all disappear under the incoming administration. They will just go further underground, where employers will be better able to subject them to illegal and immoral working conditions. The raids and deportations will be surgical, meant to inspire fear, but allow bosses to steal even more wages and exploit more effectively.

2024-11-06 06:49:03 UTC

My authoritative take on the whole "Latino men supported Trump" is that it exposed that Latino men are actually a collection of highly diverse groups originally from Latin America masquerading as a single "ethnic" bloc.
Super Catholic Latinos of a mostly-Spanish ancestry have very little in common with Black "Latinos" or "Latinos" of a mostly Indigenous ancestry who might have only been speaking Spanish for a generation or two.
Forcing all of these different groups under one label ignores the obvious: they don't share the same history, culture, or political aspirations. And when they do align, it's often due to the colonial histories imposed on them, rather than any inherent unity.
Except misogyny. That's pretty much a universal for all men.

As we edge closer to a second Trump presidency, I can't forget how #Twitter and Musk helped make it happen. So why are people still spending time on that billionaire's platform again?
