Jameson Lopp on Bitcoin Block Space and the Case for Sovereign Naming💎
Jameson Lopp has described Bitcoin as a database whose protocol defines how users buy space and make updates.
In a free-market, any use case that fits within those constraints and is paid for at the prevailing market rate is legitimate.
The Spaces Protocol applies that principle to naming.
It allocates short, human-readable identifiers through open auctions on Bitcoin, burns the bids, and anchors ownership so that no single party can revoke a claimed name after the fact.
Lopp’s framing treats block space as a scarce resource priced by willingness to pay.
Users who want to store data, open a channel, or register a name compete for the same limited capacity.
The protocol itself does not rank uses. It only enforces the rules that keep the chain consistent and the supply of new coins fixed. Under that standard, a naming system that consumes modest on-chain data, settles through ordinary transactions, and leaves verification possible for anyone who follows the chain is simply another buyer of block space.
Spaces meets those conditions.
Top-level names are assigned by auction. The winning bid is burned. Subsequent handles under a claimed space are recorded off-chain in a Merkle tree whose root is committed to Bitcoin as a 32-byte hash.
The resulting certificate proves inclusion and prior non-existence. Once the commitment confirms, the handle cannot be reassigned by the operator or by any third party.

Spaces Protocol Quick Start Guide: Claim Your Sovereign Bitcoin Identity
The protocol runs on mainnet today. Top-level spaces are distributed through open auctions that anyone can join. The video walkthrough shows the exact steps required to participate with a full node. Those steps are straightforward for anyone already familiar with Bitcoin Core, and they demonstrate that the system does not depend on a central service for its core operation.

Spaces Protocol Is the Naming System Bitcoin Has Always Needed
Bitcoin solved the problem of digital scarcity and self-custodial money. It didn’t solve the problem of human-readable identity.
For more than fifteen years, Bitcoin users have been forced to share long, unmemorable addresses that look like random strings of characters. One wrong letter and funds are lost forever. At the same time, the broader internet has trained people to use short names for everything else. Email, social media, and websites all rely on simple handles. Bitcoin has lagged behind.
Spaces Protocol changes that.
It brings sovereign, human-readable names directly to Bitcoin without creating a new blockchain, without a separate token, and without requiring any changes to Bitcoin itself.
A name such as alice@bitcoin becomes a permanent pointer that can link to a Bitcoin address, a Lightning offer, a Nostr profile, an X account, a website, and more. Once the name is properly issued and committed, no company, registrar, or government can take it away. The owner holds the keys. The proof lives on Bitcoin.

I Hope You Got Bitcoin: Spaces Protocol Auctions Are Live and Already Burning Value
Bitcoin was trading near 98,000 dollars with fees measured in single-digit sats per virtual byte. In that environment the Spaces Protocol continues to run its daily auctions for top-level names. The short update titled “I HOPE YOU GOT BITCOIN” records one ordinary day of that process: bids on ordinary words, encoded international characters, and a last-block victory that illustrates how the rules actually work.
The numbers remain early. Roughly 659 spaces registered and 780 rollouts completed, with more than one Bitcoin already burned. The activity shows a working, permissionless market for names that settle on Bitcoin rather than on a company server.
Spaces Protocol distributes scarce top-level identifiers through open auctions held on the Bitcoin chain itself.
Roughly ten names become available each day. Participants place bids as ordinary Bitcoin transactions. The highest bids at the close of the auction period win the right to claim the space.
A new bid that arrives before the claim window closes extends the auction. The design deliberately slows pure speed advantages. Unlike first-come-first-served systems or short sniping windows, a participant cannot simply watch the final moments and leap in.
The host of the update notes that this structure has already reduced the hoarding and squatting patterns visible in other naming systems. Single entities cannot lock up large numbers of desirable names in the opening moments and later sell them to the people who actually want them. Competition still exists. When awareness grows, more bidders appear. The host openly describes the mixed feeling of publishing information that will increase competition.
The same update still points out that the system is early and that the rules themselves favor broader participation over capture by the fastest actors.
The concrete activity recorded in the video makes the rules visible. Names such as root, DJ, DNA, Cipher, om, Za, iot, and UK have drawn bids.
Punycode strings that represent non-ASCII characters continue to appear in the auction list and will become claimable within hours.
Yesterday’s rollouts included a numeric string and the short word OMG. The OMG name was secured in the final eligible block before the rollout. A bid confirmed in the same block as the rollout itself would not have counted. The timing demonstrates that participants must understand both the auction clock and Bitcoin’s block cadence. A bid that arrives too late simply does not enter the set of winning offers.
The speaker reviews the size of the winning UTXO and notes the ordinary reality that larger balances can sustain longer bidding. The comparison is not to a closed room of insiders. Anyone who holds Bitcoin can submit a transaction. The chain records the offer and the eventual burn.

Spaces Protocol Community Status: Marketplace, Wallets, and Fabric Are Arriving to Make Bitcoin Names Practical
The first monthly community status update for Spaces Protocol outlines a clear sequence of tools that turn a Bitcoin-anchored naming system into something people can actually use every day. In the video “SPACES PROTOCOL COMMUNITY STATUS | FEBRUARY 25,” the team walks through a marketplace launching within weeks, a graphical wallet designed for ordinary users, Fabric for off-chain records that enable Nostr-style usernames, and the path toward subspaces.
These pieces address the two practical barriers that have slowed adoption of any Bitcoin identity project: the difficulty of buying and selling names, and the friction of running software that feels technical. The update shows both barriers are now being lowered while the security model remains unchanged.
Spaces Protocol is a naming system that lives on Bitcoin. Top-level spaces such as @bitcoin are distributed through open auctions held on the chain itself. Bids are burned. The winner receives a UTXO that carries the name under a covenant.
Sub-handles such as alice@bitcoin are issued under a top-level space. Only a 32-byte root is committed to Bitcoin. The holder of a handle receives a certificate and an inclusion proof. Anyone can verify the proof against the confirmed root. The name does not expire. No registrar can refuse renewal or seize the record after the root is on chain. The design keeps the on-chain footprint small while giving every name the same settlement finality as Bitcoin.
The marketplace described in the update is the first piece that makes transfer of these names straightforward. Version 6 of the software already supports command-line buy and sell operations that produce partially signed Bitcoin transactions. A seller creates a listing by generating a JSON object that contains the partially signed transaction. Anyone can paste that object into the marketplace interface. The buyer completes the transaction by adding the payment output and broadcasting it.
Because the signature is only valid when the correct amount reaches the seller, neither party needs to trust the other or an intermediary. The marketplace itself holds no funds and no keys. It is simply a place to publish and discover listings. Initially the market will support top-level spaces. Once subspaces are standardized, the same mechanism will work for sub-handles.
The result is a secondary market that inherits Bitcoin’s security properties instead of introducing new custodial risk.

Live Spaces Auctions and Rollouts Show Bitcoin Naming Is Already Moving.
Bitcoin sat near 99,000 dollars with low fees and a quiet mempool. In that same window the Spaces Protocol continues to record real activity.
Bids land on names. Transfers settle. New sets of identifiers roll out on Bitcoin block time.
The short daily update titled “Navigating the World of Bitcoin” captures one of these ordinary days: multiple bids on punycode strings, double-letter names drawing attention, a triple-zero entry advancing, and fresh rollouts that include ordinary words alongside encoded international characters.
The activity is small in absolute terms, yet consistent. It demonstrates that people are already treating Bitcoin as the root for human-readable names rather than waiting for a future release.
Spaces Protocol is a naming system built directly on Bitcoin.
Top-level spaces function as community identifiers. Roughly 3,600 of them can be distributed each year through open auctions. Anyone can bid. The highest bid at the close of the auction wins. The proceeds are burned so no foundation or company receives the money.
Once a space is won, its owner can issue sub-handles such as alice@bitcoin or curious@bitcoin. Most of those handles are created off-chain and grouped into a Merkle tree. Only a 32-byte root is committed to Bitcoin. The holder receives a certificate and an inclusion proof. Anyone can check that proof against the confirmed root. The name does not expire. No registrar can refuse renewal or seize the record after the root is on chain.

Naval Ravikant on Bitcoin: Money Is Speech, and Naming Should Be Too.
Naval Ravikant has long argued that Bitcoin equates money and speech. In the short clip titled “naval bitcoin,” he describes Bitcoin as a bank account in the cloud that is completely decentralized. No government, no bank, and not even the NSA can unilaterally seize or shut it down.
The entire market capitalization functions as a bounty. Anyone who breaks the system could claim a fortune, yet the network has held because compromising every participant at once is effectively impossible. China can censor YouTube or Twitter. It can't censor Bitcoin without turning off the internet itself.
That framing is powerful for money. It is equally powerful for identity.
A name is a form of speech. It is how people refer to each other, how payments are addressed, how social graphs form, and how applications recognize users.
When a name lives on a platform or a registrar, it can be frozen, reassigned, or deleted. When a name is anchored to Bitcoin the same way Naval describes money, it inherits the same properties: no single party can take it away, and turning it off requires the same extreme action as turning off the internet.
Spaces Protocol applies exactly this principle to naming. It is a Bitcoin-native system for sovereign handles.
Top-level spaces such as @bitcoin are distributed through open auctions held on the Bitcoin blockchain. Bids are burned. No foundation collects the proceeds.
Sub-handles such as alice@bitcoin or curious@bitcoin are issued under those spaces. Only a 32-byte root is committed to Bitcoin. Anyone can verify ownership with a certificate and inclusion proof checked against the chain.
The result is a short, human-readable name that is as hard to seize as the Bitcoin it is anchored to.

Brian Armstrong Wants Human-Readable Crypto Names. Bitcoin Already Has the Answer.
Brian Armstrong highlighted a problem almost everyone in crypto still feels every day: Bitcoin and cryptocurrency addresses look like random strings of numbers and letters.
At the World Economic Forum he pointed to the Ethereum Name System (ENS) as one way to fix that friction, arguing that ordinary people should be able to send money the same way they flip a light switch. They should not need to understand private keys or hex addresses.
The goal, in his view, is that most users will eventually use crypto applications without even knowing it is crypto underneath.
That diagnosis is correct. Random addresses are a real barrier. A 34-character string is easy to mistype, hard to remember, and impossible to share verbally. Human-readable names remove that friction for payments, Lightning invoices, Nostr identities, and everyday coordination. The electricity analogy is useful up to a point. Most people do not need to know how a power plant works to turn on a lamp. They do, however, need confidence that the switch cannot be flipped by someone else.
This is where Armstrong’s framing and Bitcoin’s actual design diverge.
The private key is not an unfortunate complication to be hidden. It is the feature that makes Bitcoin different from every other payment system. When you control the key, no bank, exchange, or application can freeze, reverse, or confiscate the funds. Removing that control in the name of simplicity simply recreates the custodial model Bitcoin was built to escape. Any naming system that requires users to hand keys to a third party, or that can be revoked by a company, undermines the reason people use Bitcoin in the first place.
Bitcoin therefore needs its own naming layer.
The most secure, decentralized monetary network should not depend on a naming system that lives on a different chain, requires a separate token, requires ongoing renewal fees, or can be censored by a registrar.
That is the gap Spaces Protocol fills.
Spaces Protocol gives Bitcoin human-readable names that stay sovereign.
A top-level Space such as @bitcoin functions like a community identifier, comparable to a top-level domain on the traditional web. Inside that Space, individuals receive handles such as bob@bitcoin. The handle is bound to a cryptographic key the owner controls.
Once issued, it cannot be taken away by an operator, a company, or a committee. Ownership is proven against Bitcoin itself through an inclusion proof and certificate. Extra records (a Lightning address, a Nostr npub, a website, a silent payment address) can be attached and updated off-chain so the blockchain does not fill with large or frequently changing data.

Bitcoin’s Block Space Is More Than Money: How Spaces Protocol Builds Sovereign Naming on the Most Secure Ledger
Robin Seyr and Mike Carson explore what the Bitcoin network’s block space can do beyond transferring value.
Carson, drawing on years in the traditional domain industry, points out that the thing people overlook is the ledger. Bitcoin’s block space is a decentralized, highly secure record that anyone can verify. That same property makes it the right place to anchor names.
The video, titled Bitcoin Naming System, walks through why current internet naming fails and how Spaces Protocol turns Bitcoin’s existing security into human-readable, censorship-resistant identities without a new chain, a new token, or a foundation.
Traditional domain names look convenient until they are not. Carson notes the familiar problems from his earlier work: renewal fees that never end, registrars that can refuse service, and higher authorities that can intervene. He cites the .cat top-level domain, which Spanish authorities ordered taken down during a political dispute.
He also references security incidents such as the Squarespace compromise that affected crypto-related sites. In each case the name itself was never fully owned by the person who paid for it. The system depends on a chain of trusted parties, from ICANN down through registrars and certificate authorities.
When any link fails or decides against the user, the name can be altered, seized, or simply allowed to expire. Carson and Seyr frame this as the opposite of the cypherpunk ideal that Bitcoin already demonstrated for money.
Spaces Protocol addresses this problem by treating names as Bitcoin UTXOs.
A top-level Space, written in the form @bitcoin or any other label, is acquired through a permissionless auction that runs on Bitcoin’s existing scripting.
Winning bids are burned, so no entity extracts a profit from the initial distribution.
The protocol limits rollout to roughly ten Spaces per day, or about 3,600 community identifiers per year. This cap prevents the land-grab dynamics that plagued early domain markets while still leaving room for real demand to set prices.
Once registered, the Space is a Bitcoin output controlled by the holder’s key. It can serve as a community identifier in the same way .com or .org functions on the traditional web, except the root of trust is Bitcoin’s proof of work rather than a corporation or multi-stakeholder body.
Under each Space, users create subspaces, also called handles. These are the individual identities people actually share: alice@bitcoin, bob@nostr, or mike@x.
Handles operate primarily off-chain. The operator of the Space maintains a Merkle tree of issued handles and periodically commits a compact 32-byte root on-chain.
Ownership of a handle is proven with certificates that include zero-knowledge proofs of inclusion and of non-existence in prior roots. This design lets millions of names exist under a single Space with almost no additional block-space cost.
The holder of the handle receives a certificate that remains valid even if the operator later disappears.
The handle can also be bound to an on-chain UTXO when interactive features are needed, so users who want full on-chain control are not forced to trust the off-chain layer forever.

Nacho is the mobile keystore that issues and manages sovereign Bitcoin names on Spaces Protocol. It's not a traditional wallet. It holds the keys for your handles so you can register a name, attach records, and prove ownership against Bitcoin without sending or receiving coins.
In this episode we walk through how Nacho works today and why Spaces Protocol is positioned to become the default naming standard on Bitcoin.
A handle like curious@bitcoin is issued under a top-level Space. The top-level Space itself (such as @bitcoin) is won through an open auction on Bitcoin.
Verify yourself: https://explorer.spacesprotocol.org/@bitcoin
Once the handle is issued, the operator commits a 32-byte root on Bitcoin that proves the handle exists in the set. The handle owner receives a certificate that lets anyone verify ownership against that root. Once issued, the name is non-revocable. No registrar, no yearly fee and no authority can take it away if you hold the keys.
✍️Why Nacho is a keystore rather than a wallet, and how a single seed phrase backs multiple handles
✍️Adding records (Bitcoin address, Lightning, Nostr npub, website, socials) that resolve to one name verified on Bitcoin
✍️Upcoming bidirectional verification with zkTLS so linked X, Telegram, or GitHub accounts can be checked without trusting a central server
✍️The new explorer that indexes both on-chain roots and off-chain records
✍️Why Spaces succeeds where earlier naming systems did not: open auctions with burned bids, no premine, and Bitcoin as the sole root of trust
Spaces does for naming what Bitcoin did for money. Names live off-chain for scale, but every proof is checked against Bitcoin. No middleman can freeze or revoke what the chain has confirmed.

Slave Money Ends When You Own the Name Too: Why Spaces Protocol Is the Next Layer of Bitcoin Sovereignty
Davinci Jeremie @Davincij15 put the problem in one line: if I can print money and you have to work for it, that makes you a slave.
Central banking is described as the worst kind of slavery that has touched all of mankind.
Borrowing and printing can build things, but the people who gain the power to print rarely use it only for the public good. The ability itself pulls wealth from everyone else. Only those who want to take become the ones who control the press. The best way to steal, the speaker says, is to become a bank.
Bitcoin answered that for money. No one prints more of it. You verify the rules yourself. You hold the keys.
The same logic has not yet fully reached the names people use every day. A domain still has to be rented. A social handle still lives on a company’s servers. A payment address is still a long string that no one remembers.
Spaces Protocol is the Bitcoin-native naming layer that closes that gap. It turns human-readable names into assets you hold the way you hold bitcoin, not leases you hope a registrar will renew.

@candy Is a Bitcoin Name a Shop Can Keep
@candy is already a space. It was claimed on Bitcoin, one bid, 5,000 sats burned, and it now sits in a transfer covenant like any other coin. That is a small auction for a word people say every day. The interesting part is not the burn. It is what a candy business can hang under the name once the output is theirs.
A candy company usually rents the word. The shop is a .com. The Instagram handle is a lease. The wholesale login is an account a marketplace can close. None of those names the business actually owns.
@candy can be the business name that the chain confirms, and the handles under it can be the shop, the factory, the seasonal drop, and the person who answers the invoice.
A top-level space is a UTXO. The key that spends it owns @candy. Transfer the coin and the name moves. There is no registrar to refuse renewal and no committee to decide the brand no longer qualifies. About 3,600 spaces a year leave auction. @candy already left. The holder renews it by spending it under the protocol’s rules, on the order of a year of blocks, and keeps the key. https://bitbane.com/candy-is-a-bitcoin-name-a-shop-can-keep/ #Bitcoin #Candy #Business #Name

Names Just Landed on Bitcoin | Bitcoin Has Names Now
Spaces Protocol is live on Bitcoin mainnet. This episode is the weekly show catching up after months of soft launch: what changed, why the team waited, and what to build now that handles can be issued for real.
Mike Carson and Buffrr, with the rest of the core team, kept the subspace design in revision until the path from a zero-knowledge issuance to a fully sovereign name was tested. Testnet was too uneven for that. Blocks arrived late or not at all. Mainnet, even in beta, ran at Bitcoin's pace.
The public launch waited on the supporting software too, including a way to sell names. The point of the episode is that a protocol is a set of rules, not a finished app. Adoption is the work in front: education, and things built on the name.
The host already demoed one at a Nostr meetup. An Nginx proxy that understands Spaces names, a fork of Techno Hippies' freedom browser, and an Nsite gateway so a handle can point at a site spread across servers the way Nostr spreads posts.
Next on the list: ordinary browsers, not only a custom one. A Nostr NIP that replaces NIP-05, so verification is a Bitcoin name instead of a page on a domain you rent. A way to tell a person from a bot. Mail that does not depend on DNS. Inheritance. Anything that needs assurance more than instant signup.
The contrast he keeps coming back to is GoDaddy. A dollar the first year, then $30 renewals on a card you forgot. Spaces is the version where you do not need permission, and you do not have to stay in good standing with a registrar.

A naming protocol that nobody has read is not a protocol yet. It is a paper. In “WHAT IS BITCOIN SPACES PROTOCOL?” the host says exactly that. He searched, found almost nothing, and sat down with a July 10, 2024 article from The Bitcoin Manual because the mainnet launch, around November 20, was still new enough that a year-old writeup was the best public explanation. The video is a first pass, out loud, through someone else’s notes. That is a better introduction than a slogan.
The article opens where Bitcoin opened: before the coin, digital things were copies. A file could be duplicated at no cost, so ownership was a company policy. Bitcoin made a private key the claim on a set of funds, enforced by consensus. The host skips the sermon and goes to the fight that followed. People spent a decade trying to put names on a new chain. BitDNS became Namecoin. Namecoin worked as a demo and failed as a phone book. Names sat unused. Squatting was cheap. Almost no wallet asked for one.
Handshake tried to fix the land rush with an auction on its own chain. Bots opened piles of auctions in a short window and took the good names while nobody was watching. It also tried to be an alternate DNS root. A URL is only useful if two people resolve it to the same place. A second root breaks that. Spaces takes the auction idea and refuses the second chain. The data is anchored in Bitcoin. A UTXO is the claim. No merge-mined side network. No change to Bitcoin’s rules.
The host stops on the objection everyone raises. Etching data into blocks turned node runners into unpaid storage, and miners took the fees. He does not wave that off. He points at the genesis block. Satoshi put a newspaper headline in the chain. Money is a message. A lightweight anchor is in that tradition. A JPEG in every witness is not. The distinction the article is reaching for is size. Spaces wants a naming root, not a hard drive.

Host:
Talk about the sub spaces versus the top level spaces. What's the difference? And how do you take a sub handle on chain? What are the risks if you do take it on chain? What are the risks if you don't take it on chain? Are you relying on somebody? Is it truly yours? Talk about the differences between sub handles, top level spaces, and the trade-offs.
Buffrr:
The differences between an off-chain handle and the top level space is that top level space require auctions to obtain and there's only 3,600 a year because we're trying to keep the name distribution fair, etc. And the majority of people will not need to deal with top level spaces. But, the difference between a handle that is off-chain and one that is taken on chain is cryptographically nothing, really. You don't need to take your handle on chain at all. Unless you need to do a key rotation or you need to offer your handle for sale through atomic swaps or something like that. But, functionally, a handle that is off-chain is just as sovereign and decentralized as a handle that is UTXO bound on chain. There's no difference. The only difference is if you need interactive functionality like selling or transferring. And then you can take the spend the UTXO back, so you don't upload the UTXO set. Once you're done with the interactive part, you can spend the UTXO and keep your handle and certificate.
Host:
Okay, that's interesting. So, there's no, there's no difference between the two? Just a slight difference? What about in terms of backing up? With the with the top-level space, you have a Bitcoin private key, correct? And with a sub, you don't. So, isn't there some difference?
Buffrr:
Yeah, for a sub space, you still need the inclusion proof that links to the commitment that was made on chain. So, when you are backing up, you back up the certificate and your seed phrase. For top level spaces, yes, they don't need a certificate because the whole process was done on chain.
Andrew:
Yeah, just to add to that, one distinction is that when you have a sub space off chain, and it's, you're relying on the cert relay network so you get information about it, right? If you publish any extra attributes, like, you know, website address or an email address or something like that, then that information is only attainable from interacting with the cert relay network, right? So, if you would say, "Well, you know, what happens if the cert relay network isn't available? What if, what if for some reason something happens and all the nodes go down and I can't reach it, then I can't make that resolution." And you'd be right.
Buffrr:
But that's like a data availability thing, so...
Andrew:
Right.
Buffrr:
let's say some website has a sign-in with spaces option. And let's say all the cert relays are down. Technically, it could ask you to import your certificate and you sign with it and it will accept it. Or you could put your certificate on a torrent file or you share it on some torrent service. torrent file or like torrent service. Or you could even technically throw your whole certificate on chain, which is not advisable. But, it's a data availability thing. As long as you keep your certificate, you have your ownership proof and that is sufficient to prove to anyone that you own this name, regardless of whether cert relays are down or not.
Andrew:
Right. And one of the things I like to kind of impress on people that are first learning about that, because they in their mind they might be thinking, "Oh, well, that's, you know, as Bitcoiners, we always ask how do I eliminate counterparty risk? How do I completely operate without anyone else that I have to depend on? And isn't the cert relay kind of a form of counterparty? And what happens if it's not available? What happens if I don't trust it or I don't want to rely on it?" And the answer that I give is, well, you take that name, you can then create a UTXO to represent that, put that on chain, and you can add extra data, maybe it's the email, maybe it's the website, whatever, and that then gets embedded on chain as what we call fallback data. And so, in the absolute extreme case, right, you could just say, "I don't want to trust anybody at all. I'm going to set up my own node, get it synced. I'm going to run the indexer spaces D, what we call it. That's going to, on my own look through all the transactions, build up my own view of the the set of top-level names, and then I'm going to look at just the blockchain data to get that extra information about these subnames. So, you theoretically Now, we expect most people won't do this, but just knowing that that path of complete sovereign no dependency whatsoever is there for for those that want to utilize it. And maybe there's applications where that's an important thing. Maybe if you want to prove that your somehow your passport is valid or something, you might want to, go that extra mile to to really have that complete assurance. And again, you're just relying on only the Bitcoin blockchain at that point.
Host:
Yeah, that kind of threw me for a loop there, I'm confused. Because as a Bitcoiner, someone like Andrew said, wants to remove third-party trust, I don't trust anything except Bitcoin, right? You can verify Bitcoin. So, now you're telling me that this cert relay, this certificate verified by cert relay, is proof enough. How could that be?
Buffrr:
No, just to be clear, cert relays are never trusted. So, they could give us any kind of data, but we don't care. We always verify with Bitcoin, which is the root of trust. We don't care it doesn't matter if your certificate and records are on cert relay or in a torrent file somewhere, on IPFS, whatever you want it to be. We always verify with Bitcoin, which is the root of trust for the whole protocol. Andrew, even if you put the fallback records on chain, they would still need to get the certificate somehow, unless they use them non directly.
Andrew:
Right. but it's there on Bitcoin, the the data is there, it's immutable, right? So, it's not changing unless you over wright, you do a new update that then supercedes what you put in in the past.
Buffrr:
Yeah, perhaps they could put some kind of pointers to other places other than cert-relay's like torrent file, IPFS, etc. in case cert-relay's ever go down.
Andrew:
Well, and something that I've always had in the back of my mind is a good sort of coupling with this technology is using it to kind of bridge human readable names to decentralized ID identifiers. So that's kind of gets you to a whole 'nother scheme of how do you identify and and convey information about yourself in certain controlled ways. So that this is like a whole 'nother avenue to be explored. You know, what's the best way to kind of to do that and, I think a lot of these new applications and use cases will evolve over time as we continue getting things going.

Bitcoin Community Identifiers
A Bitcoin address is a name that forgot to be a name. It is sixty-two characters, a checksum, and a prayer that the paste survived. People send life savings through that string because nothing better sat on Bitcoin. Spaces Protocol is the missing name. A space is a community identifier, held as a coin. A handle under it is a person, a shop, or a node that a stranger can say out loud. The auctions are open. The bids burn. The proof checks against the chain.
Community identifiers, not rented domains
The video “Bitcoin Spaces are Community Identifiers” starts from the comparison that actually matters. A space is the Bitcoin version of a top-level name. @bitcoin sits where .com sits, except the record is a UTXO. The key that can spend the output is the key that owns the name. There is no registrar renewal desk above it.
About 3,600 spaces are released each year. Ten a day move from pre-auction to a ten-day auction. Anyone can bid. A last-minute bid extends the clock, so sniping does not win by default. The winner claims the output. After that, the name moves like any other coin: transfer it, hold it, or hand the operator role to another key. The cap is the product. A namespace with no limit fills with lookalikes. A namespace with a daily auction makes a short name cost attention.
Early rollouts in that video were still cheap. A name like @4k cleared around 4,000 sats. Numbers and punycode were going for less, because almost no one was bidding. @karma, @ye, @uk, @matrix, @cipher, @happy were on the board or just off it. That window is the point of the video. The mechanism was live. The crowd was not. The names that look obvious later are the ones nobody fought for while the mempool was empty.

Bitcoin has a problem no price chart can fix.
A payment still starts with a string like (bc1pknhdaw3jyhvcalyrkulw2hwmqvc5q65ch9gkpnvvhrfajyedjgvqmn3w0c). Sixty-two characters. One wrong paste and the money is gone. People have lived with that since the first wallet, and they have called it normal. It is not normal. Bitcoin never got a name layer, until now.
Spaces Protocol is that layer, built on Bitcoin itself. A space is a community name, held like a coin.
A handle under it is a name a person can say out loud. alice@bitcoin instead of a string no one can check by eye.
The protocol is live on mainnet. Auctions burn bitcoin. The proof a wallet needs is small enough to check against a node.
This is the moment the unreadable address stops being the whole product.

WE WILL NAME
That is the title of a January 18, 2025 video from the channel curious@bitcoin, and it is also the simplest way to describe what Spaces Protocol is for.
Bitcoin already lets you hold money without a bank. It does not, by itself, give you a name a person can say out loud.
Spaces Protocol is the naming layer that fixes that: community identifiers and human-readable handles anchored to Bitcoin, with no registrar in the middle.
The clip is not a keynote. It is a Saturday market check at block 879,789, with ordinary fees, a look at live auctions, and a plain argument for why naming on Bitcoin matters more than another round of collectible flipping.
The host walks through bids, rollouts, and cheap punycode names, then asks the obvious question. If a domain, a wallet name, a Nostr username, and a digital ID can live on the most secure proof-of-work chain, why are people still renting those names from someone else?

JEFF BOOTH TALKS DNS ON BITCOIN
The missing piece of a truly sovereign internet has always been the name itself. Jeff Booth has long argued that Bitcoin does not merely change money; it forces every layer of the digital stack to confront the same choice between permission and freedom.
In a discussion with Bitcoin Chris, highlighted by the channel curious@bitcoin, Booth returns to DNS on Bitcoin and the role of Nostr.
The observation is simple and sharp: Nostr already functions as a kind of social DNS, yet the underlying naming systems people still rely on remain centralized, revocable, and ultimately controlled by registrars, certificate authorities, and platform operators.
The video points directly at the practical answer already live on Bitcoin mainnet: Spaces Protocol.
Spaces Protocol is a sovereign naming system native to Bitcoin. Handles such as alice@bitcoin live primarily off-chain, while Bitcoin’s proof-of-work anchors the trust. No new token, no bridge, no slashing, no optimistic security model, and no soft fork. The result is human-readable Bitcoin identities, Nostr usernames, wallet names, and payment destinations that are as hard to censor as the chain itself.
To be clear, Jeff Booth talks about the importance of DNS on Bitcoin and NOSTR. I make the connection that perhaps NOSTR can be used in the backend with relays and that Spaces Protocol could potentially be the solution we need to decentralize naming. Domain names, Digital usernames including NOSTR usernames, Human readable bitcoin addresses and more.

Spaces Protocol Is Live on Bitcoin: Why Sovereign Handles Like alice@bitcoin Could Be the Next Wave of Adoption.
Bitcoin finally has human-readable names that nobody can seize, expire, or reroute. That is the promise of Spaces Protocol: a Bitcoin-native naming system where community identifiers such as @bitcoin are auctioned on-chain, bids are burned, and individual handles live off-chain under a 32-byte Merkle root anchored to Bitcoin’s proof of work.
If you have ever tried to send sats to a 62-character address, paste an npub into a group chat, or explain why “your Lightning invoice is the QR code, not your name,” you already know the problem. Spaces Protocol is the missing identity layer: memorable, permissionless, and as hard to revoke as a confirmed Bitcoin transaction.
This post is written in the spirit of the early Spaces coverage that circulated when auctions first went live including the January 2025 Bitcoin Daily News recap on Spaces auctions and updated for where the protocol stands now: mainnet issuance, Trust Anchor verification, Nacho on mobile, and Fabric SDKs that resolve alice@bitcoin in a few lines of code.
The goal is simple. Get a handle. Verify it locally. Build on it. Tell someone else. https://bitbane.com/spaces-protocol-is-live-on-bitcoin-why-sovereign-handles-like-alicebitcoin-could-be-the-next-wave-of-adoption/ #Bitcoin #LightningInvoice #ProofofWork #npub #QRcode #Spacesprotocol

Bitcoin Spaces, What’s Rolling Out: Ten Roots a Day
On Friday, January 10, 2025, block height 878,635, the curious@bitcoin channel asked a simple question on camera: BITCOIN SPACES | WHAT’S ROLLING OUT?
Fees were still small. Low priority around 6 sats per vbyte. Medium 8. High 9. Bitcoin was walking in the mid-90s, a crab between 90k and 100k. The host said $94,967 felt cheap if you wanted some. Then he did the thing that makes this video different from a price stream. He walked into a grocery store.
Price on the shelf, ingredients in the fine print
Stores print the dollar number huge. The ingredients hide. When he was younger he grabbed whatever was cheapest. He watched someone snatch pickles by the sale tag and never flip the jar. He looks at the list now. Whole food when he can. Price is nice when it is on sale. It is not the whole product.
He applied that to bitcoin. USD is the tag on the front. The properties of the money are the ingredients. If you like those properties, the crab walk in the 90s is not the story.
He applied it again, without needing a second speech, to Spaces Protocol. The explorer will always show a number: sats burned, sats bid, sats left on @imagine. That is the tag. The ingredients are how the names come into existence, who gets paid, and what you can do after the name exists. https://bitbane.com/bitcoin-spaces-whats-rolling-out-ten-roots-a-day/ #Bitcoin #10RootsADay #WhatsRollingOut #SpacesProtocol #CrabWalk

1 Whole Bitcoin Burned: What That Milestone Actually Means for Spaces Protocol
On January 10, 2025 the curious@bitcoin channel posted a short clip with a title that still searches: 1 WHOLE BITCOIN BURNED.
The explorer had crossed a round number. More than one bitcoin had gone into the fire that creates top-level Spaces. The host did not treat it as a stunt. He treated it as the same kind of donation Satoshi made when early coins were left untouched: value given to the network so a new thing could start without a landlord.
That is the right instinct and the wrong place to stop. A burned coin is not a name you can say. Adoption is you@bitcoin in a phone app. The burn is only why nobody at a company got paid to invent @gaming out of thin air.

People say they “own” a domain the way they “own” a phone number. They mean they paid and it’s in their account. The account can still close.
A Spaces handle is different: the certificate plus the on-chain root. No yearly ICANN bill for that name. Top-level Spaces stay yours as long as you keep using the Space UTXO. Sub handles never expire. Once issued, they stay with the key.
curious@bitcoin is issued, committed as a 32-byte root on Bitcoin, and it does not expire. You truly own your name with spaces protocol, verified on Bitcoin with no middleman. #Bitcoin #SpacesProtocol #UTXO #ICANN #DNS #TopLevelSpace #NeverExpire #SubHandles

Why Bitcoin Spaces Can Be Huge: Speculators Show Up for the Flip. Users Stay for you@bitcoin
On January 9, 2025 a curious@bitcoin video made the bet out loud: WHY I THINK BITCOIN SPACES WILL BE HUGE.
The argument was not that every @xn-- string is a blue-chip domain. It was that Spaces Protocol sits on a seam most Bitcoin products miss. One side of the seam is human nature. People will bid on cats, monkeys, and ticker tape. Magic Eden already proved that. The other side is a job that still is not done: a name you can say, on Bitcoin, with no extra token and no registrar holding the lease.
Put those in the same object and you get energy plus a reason to keep the name after the candle dies. That is the only version of “huge” that is worth wanting.

Separate Naming and State: Why Your Bitcoin Shop Should Not Live Only on a Rented Website
On January 9, 2025, block 878,479, a curious@bitcoin video carried a title that is easy to skip and hard to replace: SEPARATE NAMING AND STATE.
The description asked the practical version. How do you accept bitcoin for goods and services if the website is still centrally controlled?
That is the adoption question.
Not @imagine sitting in claim for a second day. Not the burn clock kissing one full coin. Those were the pictures on the explorer.
The idea underneath is older than Spaces Protocol and is why naming on Bitcoin keeps coming back.
Money already settled on a chain nobody can quietly edit. The storefront, the invoice label, and the “find me here” string still sit on DNS, a host, and a registrar.
Spaces Protocol is the attempt to pull the name off that stack and leave the page free to move. Read More: https://bitbane.com/separate-naming-and-state-why-your-bitcoin-shop-should-not-live-only-on-a-rented-website/ #Bitcoin #DNS #Storefront #BitcoinExplorer

Top 10 TLD Sales of All Time, and Why @shop on Bitcoin Is Not .shop at Verisign
2 Lists:
On the left, the top 10 TLD sales of all time: .web at $135 million, .shop at $41.5 million, .bank at $30.2 million, then .loan, .online, .tech, .site, .fun, .store, .blog. Corporate buyers. ICANN-era roots. Multi-year contracts.
On the right, the Spaces explorer. @shop already registered for about 3,000 sats. @bank gone for about 10,000 sats. @loan in the tens of thousands. @web still in auction. @online, @site, @store, @blog still sitting there for anyone who would open a bid.
The point underneath was not that @shop is worth $41 million. The point was that the same words were going for dinner money on Bitcoin, and that only matters if Spaces Protocol becomes the place people actually resolve a name. This article keeps that comparison, updates it for mainnet handles, and tells you what to buy if you want adoption instead of a museum of cheap roots.

Is Bitcoin Spaces on Your Radar? Why 2025’s Explorer Walkthrough Still Matters in 2026
On January 8, 2025, block 878,349, a morning video on curious@bitcoin asked a search-shaped question: Is Bitcoin Spaces on your radar in 2025?
Fees were a few sats per vbyte. Spot was sliding off $100k. On the Spaces explorer the running burn was 0.97 BTC, one dip short of a full coin. @imagine sat in claim with about 880,000 sats locked. @ask and @hello were still taking bids.
Someone had just transferred @wine, @run, and @blur.
Two-digit numbers were rolling. Punycode emoji strings sat in the queue like a joke that might not be a joke.
That clip is an artifact of the auction-only era. Handles were still a promise. Nacho was not the default door.
If Bitcoin already holds the money, the next thing people will type into Google is whether it can hold a name.

Bitcoin Domains? Why Spaces Protocol Treats @gaming Like a Root, Not a JPEG
On January 7, 2025 the curious@bitcoin channel titled a video the question every Bitcoiner eventually types into a search bar: Bitcoin domains?
Fees were a few sats per vbyte. Price was knocking on $100k. The Spaces explorer showed live auctions that looked like a domain aftermarket with worse fonts and better finality: @gaming climbing through hundreds of thousands of sats, @ask and @hello over a million, @nfl cheap enough to feel like a mistake, a cat punycode drawing a stupid amount of coin, and a row of xn-- strings waiting to be decoded into emoji.
The host said the protocol might be a scam. He also said .io sold for tens of millions in the old world and that @ask reminded him of Ask Jeeves. Both instincts belong in the same post. Naming on Bitcoin is either the next obvious layer after sound money, or it is Runes with punctuation.
Spaces Protocol is the attempt to make it the first thing. This piece takes that explorer session seriously, updates it for mainnet handles, and tells you what to do if you want a name that is not a GoDaddy invoice.

The problem Bitcoin already solved and the one it didn’t.
Bitcoin already removed the middleman from money.
The next obvious fight is the middleman on names.
This clip was recorded weeks after Spaces Protocol auctions launched on Bitcoin. The thesis still holds. If your stack is self-custodied and your storefront still lives at a rented .com, you only finished half the job.
A registrar can still take the door off the building. A Spaces handle is the attempt to put the sign on the same chain as the coins.
This is a guide to what Spaces Protocol is, why Bitcoiners keep circling naming, and how to actually get you@bitcoin instead of renting you. com again.

👉You don’t hold a key that makes the name yours. It's not yours.

Certrelay is not trusted, nor should it be. Clients verify against the Bitcoin chain. You already trust Bitcoin with your stack. Same chain holds your name.
We cover BIP-353 and NIP-05 and why they fall short vs Spaces (see NIP-Spaces), why auction bids are burned in OP_RETURN, sub handles vs top-level Spaces, taking a sub handle on-chain, Nacho backups, Robin@bitcoin's Keybase-style verify idea, the next explorer, upgraded spaces marketplace, NIP-SPACES, and the last TABConf.
There is also a hint at a potential wallet adding spaces functionality?

How to Get a Bitcoin Name Before They’re Gone👀
A Bitcoin name is something you can say out loud. you@bitcoin.
No 62 character address. No registrar that can take it back. This walkthrough covers both layers.
1. A handle (a sub) is the name most people want. Look it up on Nacho or atbitcoin.com. If it’s free, it’s a one time purchase. After it’s issued, it doesn’t expire. Attach Lightning, a Silent Payment, Nostr, a site, whatever you actually use.
2. A top level Space is different. That’s @bitcoin, @candy, @register - the root. You bid in the open auction or buy a listing. Only ten new Spaces come out a day. Winning one means you operate every handle under it.
No extra chain. No extra token. Bitcoin holds a 32-byte root. Your app checks the name against that root. Good short names don’t stay listed long.👇

@bitcoin
genesis tx
If you missed the launch, here's the post: Handles on mainnet https://spacesprotocol.org/blog/handles-on-mainnet/
The first tx for
@bitcoin
on mainnet: 41 handles hashed and anchored to Bitcoin.
Transaction: 09075a71532d08bd...e39008b2 https://mempool.space/tx/09075a71532d08bdbc2169ef36d8996224b9bca5ba42b24c19cbe652e39008b2
Commitment root: f31722fdd85df8cae7112024e454d73740d56058f8107beb7c316eb1ade96ba0
That root is the only thing that goes on-chain. 32 bytes, whether the batch holds 41 handles or 41,000. The cost of committing does not grow with the number of names.

Handles on Bitcoin Mainnet!
Spaces v0.4.2 ships the off-chain issuance layer to mainnet. The first production operator is @bitcoin, issuing handles through the Nacho app.
Spaces v0.4.2 ships the off-chain issuance layer to mainnet. Operators can now issue handles under a top level space without an on-chain transaction per name, and clients can verify those handles against the Bitcoin anchored root. Handles are sovereign, irrevocable and permanent.
The first production operator is @bitcoin. Handles under it are issued through atbitcoin.com on the web, or the Nacho app on iOS and Android.
🟠What a Handle Is🟠
A handle looks like alice@bitcoin. It binds a human-readable name to a script pubkey, and that binding lives in a Binary Merkle Trie maintained by the operator of the space. The operator periodically commits the root of that tree to Bitcoin as a single 32-byte hash.
What the holder receives is an off-chain certificate containing two proofs: an inclusion proof showing the handle exists in a committed tree, and a non-existence proof showing it was absent from every prior commitment. Together they establish that the name belongs to its holder and never belonged to anyone else.
Certificates do not expire, and the handle remains yours, forever. There is no renewal and no on-chain transaction required to keep a handle.
🟠Not Your Keys, Not Your Name🟠
NIP-05 and BIP-353 both give you a you@example.com identifier, and both inherit DNS. A NIP-05 identifier resolves by fetching a JSON file from a web server. A BIP-353 address resolves to a DNSSEC-signed TXT record.
The proofs in BIP-353 are real cryptography, but DNS is a tower of custody. The record is signed by the zone operator, whose key is vouched for by the registry, whose key is vouched for by ICANN. Each link in that chain can rewrite what sits below it, and the name itself is rented.
A handle inverts that. The binding between the name and your key is committed to Bitcoin and proven by a certificate you hold. The operator that issued it has no way to alter it, and nothing has to be renewed.
🟠Verifying on a Phone🟠
Most decentralized naming requires a full node to verify anything, which is workable on a server and not on the device where names are actually resolved.
The entire protocol state compresses to a single 32-byte trust anchor. Once a client has that hash, verification is stateless, and a certificate either checks out or it does not.
There are two ways to derive it yourself. The spaces client reads blocks from your own Bitcoin Core node, builds the protocol state locally, and prints the result with space-cli trust. Veritas does the same work without a full node, syncing from a checkpoint, verifying Bitcoin's header chain, and scanning only the relevant transactions.
Once you have the anchor, you scan it into a mobile client, where it remains usable for up to two weeks.
Planned for early 2027 is a ~250 KB recursive STARK proof of the same computation, which provides functionally equivalent security to the Veritas desktop app directly on mobile, without needing to scan a trust anchor.
🟠What an Operator Can and Cannot Do🟠
An operator cannot revoke a handle, redirect it, or recover it. Certificates verify independently of whoever issued them. An operator who goes offline, sells the space, or disappears has no effect on existing holders.
The one thing an operator can break is their own ability to issue. An invalid commitment ends a space's issuance permanently, because every subsequent commitment would need to prove non-existence against a broken predecessor. Handles already issued continue to work.
Anyone can become an operator by bidding on and owning a top level space.
🟠Nacho🟠
Nacho is a mobile client for handles, available on iOS and Android. It is a resolver, a verifier, and a keystore. It's NOT a wallet. It holds no bitcoin.
Nacho generates a key pair on your device and submits the name and public key to the operator, much like a certificate signing request but cooler. The operator adds the binding to its tree, commits the root on Bitcoin and returns a certificate. The private key never leaves the device, and the operator never sees it.
Nacho resolves handles, verifies certificates on-device against a trust anchor you supply, and lets you update records. Handles are purchased in-app under @bitcoin and the other spaces Nacho operates in its registry. It also accepts creating inclusion requests for other top level spaces not operated by Nacho.
Records such as payment addresses, Nostr pubkeys, and websites are published through Certrelay and touch no on-chain bytes.
Nacho is one operator's implementation. The protocol does not depend on it, and any operator can build their own.
Other spaces set their own terms. @bitcoin is the first production operator, not the only possible one.
🟠Release🟠
v0.4.2 is at github.com/spacesprotocol.
Developers can get a free random test handle from the faucet to test against, and the paper covers the protocol in full. https://spacesprotocol.org/blog/handles-on-mainnet/
