I've been sharing this with my Discord pals and I believe this was definitely an Italian gizmo.
UR GEAR was quite an expensive device (about 170 eur) that promised to make your head THE JOYSTICK, you could control everything in 3D by moving and screaming. Compatible with EVERY GAME!
(or maybe it's the U GEAR R? GEAR UR? GEAR RU?)

In the early 1980s, pirated software in Italy was so widespread that many had barely any idea they were buying pirated games. Even if someone wanted to purchase original games, they were often very hard to find and most shops would still try to sell the "cheaper" version anyway.
Despite Armati's attempts to go legit (later), their pirate streak would never subside and would even lead to legal issues with other companies such as Leader.

Apparently NexusMods has just been sold. To a company called "Chosen" that claims to be an expert in monetizing gaming start-ups.
Prepare for some enshittification.

Forge was a Loom fangame sequel that drew inspiration from several of Brian Moriarty's ideas for a sequel, also incorporating unique ideas of its own.
Unfortunately, the project stopped at chapter 1.
I reuploaded the demo on Archive since it has become quite hard to find today.
I'd recommend all Loom fans to try it out, it is really well made for an AGS fangame, quite high production values.

Das Erbe (The Inheritance, 1991) is another strange "advergame" from Germany.
You are tasked with renovating a house in the most eco-friendly way possible. So, do not even try to open the window without turning the heat down first. The funny thing is that even a slightly wrong choice will cause the world to explode (yep) or you to be burnt to a crisp by the sun.

You know the vintage meme "old games could not be beaten, they just got harder and harder until you died"?
Lady Tut from 1983 might be the exception. Plays like a classic single-screen maze arcade game, but once you collect 100 shots - which takes 2-3 levels out of the 9 in the game - you can start to use the laser gun.
Basically, the game gets easier as you progress. Unique for 1983, not even 100% sure it was made on purpose.

Happy to have contributed a small review of Skald to this nifty webzine by

Abenteuer Atlantis is a 1994 point-and-click adventure made for Knorr, starring Knorrli the gnome who has to save his country from famine. The story deals with ancient Mesopotamian gods, a descent to hell, curses, and death.
No idea why an advergame had to go so hard, but I'm so happy it did. It's magnificent.

Since it's Indy Day, I like to remember one of the lesser Lucasarts titles: Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis action game (not the adventure) from 1992.
Developed by UK company Attention to Detail, it is often considered to be the worst game published by the company in the 1990s and is now basically forgotten.

The closing of Piranha Bytes seems to have attracted a lot of "eurojank" comments, but the studio still did release several well-remembered RPGs. My favorite is still Gothic 2, which greatly improved on its predecessor with a world that did not feel big for the sake of it, but had plenty of small and interesting details to make it feel immersive.

I feel it's time to go back to Transylvania and tackle Simon's Quest in its brand-new redacted form. Today at 5.30 PM (CET) I'll be trying to finish Castlevania 2 without any hints, is it even possible?
Well at least I won't die as much as in the first...

I have a folder named "Downloads" where I keep all the stuff I download and I'm using so I don't forget.
Inside that folder, there is one named "old downloads" where previous downloads from my old laptop are stored.
Inside that folder... no, I don't want to think about it.

On Patreon I published a history of Capstone, the infamous 90s developer who developed such games as TekWar and Witchhaven.
Why were those games "not good"? The developers told me a story of rushed dev times and a toxic environment.
I'd love some support in those tough times. Thanks.

@npub1y4h…t26u still in 2023 I don't really vibe with it. It's one of those games which looks incredibly fun in the hands of someone else, then I play it and it's all drab textured walls, same enemy repeated a hundred times and annoying jumps and traps. Respect the quirkiness but can't get into it even now.
