I gave a presentation about uses of AI in accessible music making for Drake Music yesterday, was live-streamed on youtube. Discussed the now on-board screen-reader of Ableton Move, Speech generation, and other presentations touched on things like stem splitting which is hugely useful. https://www.youtube.com/live/Jr4J2-3qRqg?si=rrwqFzeHRJA1b9Vb&t=529

Please, if you use something I made, be it music or sound, please just credit somewhere. It was free to begin with, attribution costs nothing but a few words. That's all I ask. Me, and many other creators.

I have a bunch of PortableApps installs with different things in them and I got annoyed with updating one, then updating another, and another so I made a script, a bit like NVDASync to manage it for me. Would anyone find that useful perhaps? If so I'll github the thing.

When you boost posts without alt-text from accounts that actively refuse to add it, you normalise cutting people that rely on it, out of the conversation. You are actively platforming that behaviour so it never gets addressed.
Please note that *anyone* boosting Aaron David's posts, as they very rarely ever contain any actual text and only a picture, add to that noise.
This person is one of the largest anti-contributers to alt-text on fedi.
He has been asked to add it and actively and purposefully refuses to do so.

Apple TV has never let me down where audio description is concerned. Always has it on every episode, even if it's just come out. Other services could learn something from that.

It's a long shot but I don't suppose anyone in the UK, London more specifically has an old google pixel they'd be willing to part with? I'm running into issues with my app working perfectly fine on a galaxy with all labelled buttons, but not on google's devices. I'm making 0 money from this app so I don't and can't justify buying a new device just for this one thing, but someone's old, replacement device they no longer need would be super helpful. Thanks Fedi.

#AudioMo Day 30: If you pay for a TV ad during prime-time, the least you could do is hire a proper voice actor or actress instead of... Whatever this AI crap thing is. Come on, even Eleven labs sounds better than this. Did you run out of money for this thirty-second junktastic bs?
PS. @nprofile…lag7 pointed out it sounds like the Netflix show 'The boroughs' but not as good.
Maybe there's a bunch of cameras there and you'll be in the next dull reality TV show. that bit was me.

I set up a new laptop a few days ago, Huawei MateBook D14. So much bloat! so much!
MS office 15 and 16, bunch of the usual bs windows apps and yes, onedrive.
Even after uninstalling though, I noticed a rogue onedrive folder hanging around like a bad smell in my user folder. This pissed me off, so I deleted it...
Little did I know it would delete my desktop icons I'd just painstakingly setup though.
I had to reboot to even get access to the desktop again, it would error out if I for example, did Windows+E, Backspace as usual. Anyway I noticed that folder coming back so I was like, nah. Not having it.
Had to find a way to solve it. Eradicate the bloody thing from my system, so I did.
If you're going through the same thing, here's a zip file to fix it: https://3.onj.me/programs/OnedriveFixes.zip
Here's what the readme says about it:
Onedrive Fixes
This script removes OneDrive from a Windows user profile and moves the standard folders back where they normally belong.
It is intended for cases where OneDrive has redirected Desktop, Documents, or Pictures to a path such as:
C:\Users\YourName\OneDrive\Desktop
What It Does
• Backs up the affected registry keys to this folder.
• Moves Desktop, Documents, and Pictures out of OneDrive and back to the normal user folders.
• Updates the Windows known-folder registry paths.
• Removes OneDrive startup entries.
• Disables OneDrive sync policy.
• Hides OneDrive from Explorer where possible.
• Removes OneDrive scheduled tasks where possible.
• Runs the normal OneDrive uninstallers.
• Deletes the leftover OneDrive folder after moving the known folders back.
• Restarts Explorer so the folder changes take effect.
How To Use
Right-click this file and choose Run as administrator:
Onedrive Fixes.cmd
The script writes .reg backups and a .log file beside itself in this folder.
After it finishes, reboot the computer and confirm Desktop, Documents, and Pictures are in the normal user profile folders.

I'm considering a more modern Android phone for testing purposes. What are people using these days that have a good featureset, feel fast, and maybe, just maybe, still offer a headphone jack and MicroSD expansion? Can live without either if I really must but would be nice to haves.

Inspired by the fantastic @nprofile…anhw, I present: MidiCleaner.
In a nutshell:
Takes MIDI files (either singular or a folder), and cleans them with a few parameters you specify.
Things like:
Removing bank and program changes, chorus, reverb, volume and pan and a few other things.
You can have it set all the channels to channel 1 which some DAW's prefer, you can have it export as type 1 or type 0.
You can have it put the files alongside the original source, or specify a folder.
It supports command line as well, and you can have it reachable via the Send to menu, so it slots nicely into the send to project.
This would not have been possible without Arfy's initial Mac script giving me the idea to turn this into a windows app. All credit to him for the idea.

Here's a little request from us to you.
There's so much to listen to, so you're not exactly stuck for choice, but if you're bored of politics and the usual badness and sadness in the world, my wife @nprofile…lag7 and I do a weekly podcast together.
We've been married 17 years so our chemistry is great, we have fun, some banter and cover all sorts of things.
At the time of writing we've done 82 episodes and consistently release to the public on Fridays. It's anthology-style so no reason to listen in any particular order.
So while you're washing up, doing the vacuuming, walking the dog or perhaps puttering around your house, find us on Fedi and give us a listen.
We post a description and a download link to every episode over at @nprofile…suyg so you can see if any episode catches your ear.
You can pick us up in your podcast platform of choice (including RSS of course) and we'd love to have you along.
https://onj.me/stroongecast
The best way to support us is just a boost or a share to your friends, that's it really. We don't do sponsors, we don't take money, we just do this because we want to, so if you feel so inclined, please do pass it on.
#StroongeCast

Well this is the first time I think I’ve been genuinely bloody livid about an update because of iOS 26.4.
I don’t do credit cards, only debit, which is common enough in the UK, and none of the cards I input were enough to prove I’m over 18, despite the fact I purchased the damn phone, it’s tied to my Apple ID which has my birthdate, and since we don’t have ID cards and I don’t drive, my one method of verification (that being my passport) was not accepted.
As a result I cannot change some settings on the phone I spent my own money on….. What the actual hell is this utter fucking bullshit? Age verification laws strike again. Fan fucking tastic.

New addon based on a conversation I had previously with @nprofile…upr0 and @nprofile…dvg7.
I think this one's a bit buggy still, so be careful. Nothing dangerous or death-defying though, I just don't think I've managed to pin down all the weirdnesses exactly.
It works great for stopping me typing Oyu' or Itneresting' though, and yep, I had to disable it to let me mistype those on purpose. Haa!
spellBox is an NVDA global plugin for fast typo correction while typing. It can automatically replace words using user-defined aliases, and it can optionally use an offline Hunspell-style dictionary to flag unknown words and offer correction suggestions.
Main features
• Automatic alias replacement when you finish a word.
• Optional offline dictionary with install/update button in settings.
• Suggestion menu for the last unknown word.
• Clipboard-aware fallback insertion for controls that are awkward to edit directly.
• NVDA settings panel for quick configuration.
Commands
• NVDA+apostrophe: Toggle spellBox on or off.
• NVDA+semicolon: Show suggestions for the last unknown word.

Let's talk about 'Move Everything':
An unofficial framework for running custom instruments, effects, and controllers on Ableton Move.
Move Everything adds a Shadow UI that runs alongside stock Move, enabling additional Synths, FX, and other tools to run in parallel to the usual UI.
One person, Charles Vestal has managed to slipstream a screen-reader directly onto Move using either Flight or ESpeak-NG, taking advantage of Ableton's own Screen-Reader data and also made it so that the WiFi pin that their web-based offering doesn't read, reads on-device.
The guy is an actual genius.
It does way more than I can begin to mention here, but for the first time ever, we have a groovebox with screen-reader that is 100% actually stand-alone, no need to be tied to a phone or computer of any kind.

@nprofile…nmwl I'm glad that fedi allows adding such text later. It's the thought that counts, even if you can't add it in the moment. I do get that.

2025-12-24 07:02:28 UTC

Are you a photographer? Did you just take the most amazing picture of your life and are excited to share it on social media so others can bask in it's glory? If so, I feel that way about music, so I get it.
The question for you though, is did you add alt-text? Nope, this isn't going to be 'one of those posts' where I berate you for not doing so, it's actually to make you stop and think.
If the answer's yes, then this won't apply to you, but if the answer's no, let's see why not.
Is it because you think alt-text doesn't matter and nobody reads it anyway?
Is it because you don't know how to describe it so you just don't?
If it's either of those, let me see if I can help a bit.
Scenario 1, imagine how you'd explain your amazing picture to someone who can't see.
This might make you clam up because that seems like a really intimidating task, so let's not think of it like that. Instead, let's go for scenario number 2.
Imagine explaining it to someone on the phone that you just called up in huge excitement because of this crazy-good picture, they can't see it so you're just using natural language to explain why it has rocked your world.
do that, and then type what you think into the alt-text box.
Don't over-think it, you don't even have to go into gobs and gobs of detail if you'd rather not, but enough so that someone talking about your picture to someone else who hasn't seen it, will still be able to get all the high-points you yourself would want them to get, when talking about it.
If you do that for your pictures, people like me with no sight, and even your mum, dad, granny on the phone who isn't on social and won't join the family chat because they don't have a smart phone, will be able to enjoy it to, based on your personal description.
I'm not here to patronise you by any means, more to help you help others to enjoy your work even more, that's all.
#AltText helps so many people, not just those with a visual impairment.
If you made it this far, thank you.

Has Windows 11 25H2 decided that Windows+D and Windows +M don't need to exist anymore? If so, I hate your face longtime!

A musical interlude I came up with today.
It's using the Logic Vintage Upright piano.
I've been in a slump lately so writing is hard.
I think this could do with a really soft female vocalist to bring this out, so if that's you, feel free to take this and run with it.

Did you find a post from a follower that you really liked? If so, just boost it. That way other people have the opportunity to like it too.
It's such a simple thing and many gloss over it.
With non-algorithmic posts here, it's the only way it will show up for new people as there's no promotion or advertising.
Like it, boost it, pass it on.
So simple. So Fedi.

Kneecaps are shit. Bash one and it hurts for days. Isn't it supposed to like, not hurt for days when you hit it because it's a cap? Of your knee, which is the delicate thing behind the kneecap, which is the thing that hurts for days?
Want my money back. One star. Rubbish.

Did you know I have a 24-7 stream that plays music from TV shows, some radio ID's, UK adverts and also my own shorts collection on shuffle? I've collected an eclectic mix of television themes from all over the globe. You can listen here if you wish. It's an m3u playlist so copy/paste it into your media player of choice.

We can't be the only ones who find it hard to call each other by-name directly, but happy to do so when talking about our partners to other people. This must be a thing, right? @nprofile…rhuu and I were just discussing this, and she thought she was weird for never referring to me by name. I don't do this either, find it strangely uncomfortable and I have absolutely no idea why that might be.
Do you call your significant other by their name when addressing them?

Even xitter doesn't want to be called X. When a post isn't available but has been used in an article online, guess what the text *still* reads to screen-readers after all this time?
'This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.'
Tweet. Yep. Not post, not x, not xeet, tweet.
Twitter is what it was and what it will always be to me.
I don't use it anymore but that changes nothing.

When hitting the windows key on a win 11 laptop takes no less than 30 seconds to bring up the start menu... That.

There are some seriously angry people in this world, it's sad. Just had an incredibly pointless argument with a white South African man who was clearly triggered and upset because I used the word 'Diverse'... Takes all sorts I suppose.

Can't have 'Fediverse' without being 'Diverse'

Curious, how do people schedule posts on Mastodon? Is that a thing?

@nprofile…6h3y I asked a *real* AD professional I know at the time who it was, and she found out it was just someone called Hannah. That's all I know.

@nprofile…6h3y During the 2012 London Olympics, channel 4 hired somebody to do live AD.
They prefaced pretty much every damn line with 'As you can see' which I of course, could not...
It was very irritating.

Jake got a Hackintosh machine running on my old server box that I don't use anymore. Here's an 18-minute chat with him about it, as I wasn't here when he got it running. VoiceOver runs well on it but you don't hear it in this demo, but I do mention it.

I felt like taking a picture from the train I'm on out of the window, and really liked the description I got from the #AI. My daughter back home also said it was a good picture, so thought I'd share it here as well. Now of course she could have just been humouring me, I don't know 😂

Dear America, please step up and make this guy disappear. You are looking like incompetent fools on the world stage with this man at your head. Do better. Very much, do better.

@nprofile…aqq5 @nprofile…xcq8 I feel the same about quote-posts especially because I don't use mastodon on the web, so they're just random links to me which I can't be bothered to click.
