I have a ViewSonic VA2759-smh (27") for my personal laptop and a Dell P2217H (21.5") for my work laptop, and I prefer looking at the Dell while I'm writing. The 27" is too wide for line lengths of the writing proper but the extra space is too much for side notes and too little for a second window/tab of reference.
